We understand from sources out here on the eastern boundary of Shenandoah National park in the white okay canyon area that a body has been found. This is how our last hour of the day has played out. We were up in the middle of Shenandoah Park at a high elevation when we noticed nine Virginia StatePolice Troopers heading at a high rate of speed down the mountain. We followed them down. Ironically to the place where the very search began in very remote parking lot in the eastern boundary of the park where Nicole Mittendorffs mini cooper was discovered saturday. There is a very, very grim and somber mood as state police and other personnel are gathered at the scene. This is an area that is so remote there is no cell service. I drove about 15 miles up the road so i could get a land line at a Little Country store here. But after 6 days of searching and it appears a body has been found. The area is roped off. Close to where the search began. Hundreds of people have fanned out across the area in a methodical grid search over very, very rugged terrain. At one point there were six water falls in the white oak canyon. At one point trained searchers rappeled down the side of the canyon and divers went in the for evidence. But there was nothing until today. We have been out here in Madison County all day long and we did notice throughout the afternoon a lone helicopter hovering over head at a specific location near the parking lot. This is the scene where a disabled man, a 45yearold man named Paul Gianelos was here with a Community Service organization having run. He wondered lunch. He wondered away. He may have wondered over there, an nun dale road. Police were called. What happened next was tragic. Of events. He never spoke a word in his 45 year life. He could read but he was autistic. He died wednesday after a struggle with a Fairfax County police officer. It sounds terrible. His family is angry and want answers. On advice from a lawyer, they declined to be interviewed on camera but there was a plan in place that should have prevented this from happening. He lived at a special groups home. On wednesday he was here at roundtree park on an nun dale road eating lunch with his group. When the group leader realized paul was gone, they called police. Fairfax police say a 20 year veteran officer spotted paul along the road about a mile from the park. Police say the officer tried to talk to him, talk him into coming back to the group. Paul refused. Police say he became combative officer. Paul was handcuffed and hit his head. Rescue was called and police say when paul was transported, he went into cardiac rest and died. That is crazy. I dont know the situation that went on but im sure there is a better resolution than taking down an older gentleman. Surprising that it happened here. Terrible. Reporter the family and police are waiting for the results of an autopsy. Fairfax county police are conducting two investigations one criminal and one through internal Affairs Department and also the st.
