And those, too, the ones that have been replaced, he said they will also be looked at. And this will certainly be a major inconvenience. As you guys talked about. You have to think about the folks going to work, folks going to schools. Really throughout the metro politan area. Wedefeld stressed this is not something that could have waited until the weekend when demand began to dip. It was something that had to be looked at tonight. They did mention that this is unprecedented. Nothing like this, aside from shutting down for weather. Nothing like this in terms of shutting down the entire metro system has ever been done. Guys . Moa, just to be honest, i was only listening to half of the press conference. Because i was listening to tweets on the air. But some said, hey, youre going to shut down metro because they think its not safe. What am i to think if im riding it tonight . Was that addressed . It was a question that was brought up. D the most rational decision he could make was to at least allow people to get home. You certainly dont want to leave the entire metro politan area stranded. You know, theyve gone to work. Theyve used this system to get to wherever theyve gone to today. Didnt want to leave them stranded. He also stressed that yes, while this is a safety issue, this is a safety concern. He didnt think that it was something that, you know, could necessarily be an issue tonight. But again, you know, he talked about the difficult decision that this was, this sort of balancing act of safety and, you know, trying to get people to where theyre going. And certainly its evident in this decision today. Unpopular, tough, something that has to be done. And thats the sort of thing hes looking at right now. Have some information here about d. C. Public schools. A lot of people want to know whats going to happen with the kids. Apparently it will excused absences. And there will be extra buses out there. Thats the situation in d. C. But lets head out to peggy fox now. She is live in virginia, at the Franconia Springfield station with more on what riders there are saying. Peg . Oh, yeah. Everyone has heard about it. Most people have. This is andre. And you actually work in Northern Virginia at the u. S. Patent office. And he lives downtown. But you use metro every day, right . Yes, every day. What do you think . Its closing at midnight for at least 29 hours. I wish they gave us more notice. But if it makes it safer in the long run, im for it. But its a little late notice, i think. A lot of people are scrambling. And you will be. How are you going to get to work tomorrow . Hopefully theyll give us guidelines. Hopefully they will get us home from work, or ill have to uber it. I talked to several people who said they are going to uber it. Uber might be lo right. And im sure a lot of people will be using it so it will be overpriced. Hopefully theyll give us a late arrival time. Come in a little later and beat the traffic. Thank you. We have adam right here. Youre a federal contractor. And you just heard about it. What do you think . For me, its not going to be as bad as other people. Im fortunate that i work for an agency that allows us to telework. And im glad thats all in place. Its not going to be a major inconvenience for me personally. Not everybody lets you telework. Not a lot of federal contractors do. And federal workers can telework but not everybody can do that. So if you had to get to work tomorrow, what would you do . I would have a problem. You dont have a car . I do have a car. But i can imagine it being major traffic tomorrow. And the delays being very long. I would have to just wake up early and deal with traffic tomorrow. Or maybe take a cab or uber, wh mentioned that there will probably be a surcharge because of the demand tomorrow. Right. Im very fortunate that i have the option of teleworking. A lot of uber drivers might be really happy right now. Theyll get some extra work, maybe. Thats definitely a positive way to look at t. Trying to spin it, look at the cup half full. Thank you for talkingitous. Talking to us. Take care. We talked to a number of people. One guy lives here in franconia and works downtown. He was stunned. He said, oh, my gosh, what am i going to do . Im going to have to call uber . A lot of people here having to scramble. And a lot of people wondering why the rail service wasnt shut down right now. And again, what paul wedefeld said, was they didnt want inspectors down with the electrified hot rail as well. Theyll have to shut it down at midnight, give the system a chance down and start the very tenuous project and find out what is going on with those 600 cables. And there is a gradual drip of information about what is going to be affected as a result of this unprecedented shutdown. Weve already told you that d. C. Public will scoos will re schools will reopen tomorrow. And to put a period on something peggy was saying a moment ago. Talking to folks, i, i guess im going to take uber. Theres only so many uber drivers out there. And already unprecedented amount of traffic as well. Folks deciding theyre going to have to forgo metro. Uber might get you there. But its still probably going to take a long, long time. Because you can expect a lot of people to be on the roots tomorrow. Lets kick it out to wusa 9s ellison barber who is live out there. The redline gradual getting reaction. Reporter its adam. You see more and more people going from ive not heard to oh, i heard about it. Tim, you take the metro to work every day. Youre already in the process of alternate plans to get wotork tomorrow. To work tomorrow. How are you thinking youll get to work tomorrow . I just heard from my friend in atlanta. She sent me a picture of twitter. Its very disheartening news. I dont know what im going to do, ill have to take uber or a metro bus to get to the hospital. At least for the commute home today, do you think its wise and prudent for them to shut this down tomorrow for 24 hours . Yeah. Safety is number 1. If its a safety issue, you do what you have to do to shut it down and get it right for everyone else. Reporter you mentioned earlier, maybe this is a sign of things to come. Do you think we could see longer closures . Or what do you think happens at the end of this 29hour period . I hope they can get probably going to have to shut it down. Im sure this will start to raise i eyebrows from everyone else. I think we can say maybe we hope we have good luck with that. Seems like its going to be incredibly crowded. I spoke to one child. A School Student who said, i take the metro every day. But if its going to keep me safe, thats fine. A lot of people still getting this news down here at tenley town. A lot of people surprised. But the general consensus seems to be, if its going to keep them safe, theyre okay with it. And perhaps as we get into the later evening, well talk to more people who are freaking out about it. But again, its hard to hear that reaction when youre just hearing the news. But its good that everyone is calm at this point. The new metro general manager is taking the safety issues with a new sense of urgency, making a very tough, unpopular decision. But one he says is that the metro entire system, the rail system will be shut down for the next 29 hours, starting after midnight. Lets listen to him in his own words. While the risk to public is very low, i cannot rule out a potential life safety issue here. And this is why we must take this action immediately. When i say safety is our highest priority, i mean it. Of course well be on top of this story for the next two days and beyond. Yeah. There will be a lot of transportation issues that need to be worked out tonight and into tomorrow. Well have that for you. You can look for uptothe second updates on our free wusa 7 9news app. A popular place to go for the next hours.
