wusa9 news. >> details are hard to listen to. a cab driver shot and killed after picking up a passenger in capitol heights and police are looking for the gunman. surae chinn is live in the neighborhood where it happened. >> reporter: the 29-year-old cab driver from ethiopia was found in the 800 block of in capitol heights maryland and police are searching for a shooter. the owner of the company silver cab of prince george's county says khdeir yaya leased his car from them and has been driving for them for two years. he said he was a good guy, a good driver and he had picked someone up after being flagged down at the addison metro station. at 6:00 we talk to the cab company owner, other cab drivers. they say they feel they've lost a family member coming up in the next hour. prince george's county police made an arrest in a murder in fairmount heights. alexis henderson is now charged with first degree murder. it's thought henderson got into an argument with the victim rafael frazier that ended with frazier being stabbed to death. his body was found inside a home on wood hill court yesterday morning and cops found henderson in the district last night driving a car stolen from frazier's local. search crews prepare for another full day of recovery in the waters off indonesia. the grim task of identifying bodies of those found so far from air asia flight 8501 is also underway. craig boswell has the latest. >> reporter: search teams in indonesia are trying to work around high winds and rough seas to locate more victims of air asia flight 8501, the jetliner was about halfway through its two hour flight from indonesia to singapore when it disappeared from radar sunday. cbs news has learned indonesian officials believe the pilot attempted a steep climb to get out of the bad weather before the plane went down. authorities in charge of the investigation, though, cannot confirm that until the so- called black boxes are located. the flight data recorders can provide investigators with critical information about the plane's altitude, air speed and engine performance as well as a recording of the pilot's last words. cbs news confirmed a sonar image believed to be thman fuselage is upside down -- main fuselage is upside down at the bottom of the java sea. the first of the 162 people on board arrived in surabaya wednesday and now the identification process begins. victims' families are given detailed descriptions of their loved ones along with blood samples for dna matching in hopes of speeding up the identification process. craig boswell, cbs news. >> the new year without streetcars. the trolleys are on the road, on the eighth street corridor but just test runs without passengers. the gray administration hoped residents would be enjoying them by now, but safety concerns delayed the launch. ddot still has to complete a safety report. >> it was like oh, street cars are going to be going any minute, blah, blah, blah, you'll have such great transportation to get to union, blah, blah, blah. >> people will be upset because we had thought the trolleys were going to be here almost two years ago. >> the $123 million projects began all the way back in 2008. mayor gray says ddot will workday and night to get passengers safely riding on those trolleys. as new year's eve partiers are in for a chilly night, first alert meteorologist erica grow joins us now. how cold will it get tonight? >> it will feel like it's in the 20s, even upper teens after a really chilly end to the year. we only got up to 39 degrees today, our average high 44. we started the day at 29 degrees. it's going to be even colder today. you'll see that in the feels like forecast. this is when you combine, of course, the air temperature with the wind speed and as you're waking up early tomorrow morning, it's going to feel like 20 in frederick, 20 in gaithersburg, 16 in hagerstown, 23 in fredericksburg. so that chill will remain in the air. if you're heading to the nhl winter classic tomorrow, even in the afternoon, it's still going to feel like it's in the low 30s to mid-30s and it won't get any better until we get to the weekend. so that chill will still be in the air even early on friday morning. overnight tonight if you're heading out for those new year's eve celebrations, make sure you have the winter coat of, 20 to 26 degrees, wind chills in the teens and 20s with that west, southwest wind at 10 miles per hour. we'll talk about the warm-up and the chance for rain coming up in the first alert seven- day. changes are coming to redskins park following another losing season. today general manager bruce allen announced that defensive coordinator jim haslett is no longer with the organization. sports anchor kristen berset is here with more. >> redskins fans have been begging for some major changes to happen in ashburn. of course, they went to a new owner of the team. it's not going to happen any time soon. they also have been calling for general manager bruce allen to get fired. that doesn't appear to be happening either. in fact, today allen gave his annual postseason press conference to talk about the state of the franchise which is 28-52 in his five years as general manager. he s pokeabout 40 minutes. it got pretty testy at times. he promised to reevaluate the program, make some changes, the first which of we now know is a new defensive coordinator. jim haslett and the redskins agreed to part ways. this was haslet's fifth year with the team in. that team the redskins' defense collectively finished 29th in total yard and 30th in points allowed. on monday head coach jay gruden said he would recommend the team keep haslett, but two days later that's not the case. here's bruce allen explaining what happened. >> jay and jim have been talking the last few days and this morning when they were talking, they decided it was the best way for both sides and i appreciate coach haslett's work and what he's done for the redskins, but i think it was the right decision. >> bruce allen said the team planned on reaching out to other candidates beginning today but wouldn't give any kind of timetable when they plan to make a new hire, but did he say it would eventually be up to jay gruden to pick the new defensive coand who he wanted to work with. >> it sounded like he wanted to him. he can. saying he wanted to keep mcfadden's has 72 hours to appeal the decision. new information on what police call the mob assault of a pizza delivery plan. it happened december 9th on fletcher road in sterling. the loudoun county seeing some of the coldest temperatures, but it will feel like it's way below freezing even at midnight tonight. here we go with the michael and son weather cam. you can see it was sunny today. we have lots of blue sky overhead, but that sunshine was deceiving. it was cold and look at how dry it is, too. right now the temperature is 36, but the dew point is only 6 degrees. so that adds an extra element of dryness to the air that really makes it feel bitingly cold. that will factor in when the wind starts to pick up overnight into tomorrow. so make sure you bundle up for the teens and 20s overnight tonight. tomorrow morning will be mostly sunny and all day long it's going to stay cold, plus the wind chill will be a factor all day. keep that in mind if you're heading to the nhl winter classic. friday will be seasonably chilly. temperatures will start to rebound a bit heading into friday. now it's already below freezing in hagerstown. it's 31 degrees. it's 30 in martinsburg, 36 in culpeper and orange, 36 in washington and 33 at andrews. just about everyone is going to dip below freezing when that sun sets and here's satellite and radar. plenty of cloud cover to our south and north but none really over us. high pressure will continue to nudge its way toward us keeping things cold and dry. as we head through the day thursday, that area of high pressure starts to slide to the east, but we don't have any precipitation in our forecast until the weekend. some clouds move toward us friday, but no rain and with a little bit of a breeze out of the west and southwest we will start to bump temperatures up. however, saturday here comes our next storm system and by the time we get into saturday evening rain will be falling. at least it's not wintery weather. overnight tonight if we had precipitation, it would be icy. so thank goodness we don't have that in the forecast. at 8 p.m. 33 degrees, 31 at midnight. so already below freezing downtown d.c.ked -- downtown d.c. at midnight and it will be mostly clear and cold, overnight lows between 20 and 26 degrees, wind out of the west, southwest continue at 10 miles per hour. tomorrow morning will be another cold start, temperatures in the 20s and 30s and that wind chill maintains in the 20s as well with winds out of the west, southwest at 10 to 15. heading into the afternoon mostly sunny skies, a high around 40 degrees, still a little breezy and stillly, winds out of the southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. by friday we're back to where we should be this time of year, 48 degrees. so it's a couple degrees above our average and then saturday we're watching that storm system approach. it will be slow to arrive. we'll see dry conditions in the morning changing over to some showers in afternoon and a high of 42 degrees. timing is everything with this one. we're getting the weather just in time for those temperatures to be above freezing so we aren't concerned about wintery weather here in the immediate metro area. in the first alert seven-day forecast sunday is the warmest day with 50 degrees, but it's going to be a little breezy and we'll have on and off rain showers all day and then temperatures plunge back into the 30s as we head back to work and school on monday. in tonight's consumer alert not such a great day for the stock market. >> but it has been a good year overall. today the dow industrials lost 159 points, the nasdaq dropping 41 points, but for the year the dow gained 7% . volkswagen beetle, jetta and passat from 2014 and 2015 and the golf in 2015, no injuries have been reported on these recalls. white castle says customers were asking for a meat alternative. >> i don't know who those people were, but the veggieburger is chockful of vegetables like carrots, zucchini and broccoli and costs 99 cents. white castle said it got rave reviews. >> no one goes to white castle for a veggie burger. millions who make minimum wage are getting a raise on new year's. >> reporter: from fast food restaurants to retail stores, millions minimum wage workers are getting a pay bump in the new year including jade anderson. >> i've been a cashier 20 plus years, so it will impact me and my family. >> reporter: at least 23 states will have a higher minimum wage in 2015. in missouri the wage is going up to $7.65 an hour. in maryland it's $8. workers in washington will get 9.47 an hour. add in states with previous wage hikes and 29 will be taking above the federal level of 7.25 an hour. >> what do we want? >> reporter: but many workers want more. nationwide protests in 2014 called for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage. new jersey garage owner john o'connor pays his entry level employees a state minimum which moves the to 8.38 an hour. he can hand -- moves up to $8.38 an hour. he can handle the increase now, but it will force companies to raise prices. >> on the small stuff, those prices will have to go up. as my costs go up, i have to pass it on. >> reporter: many business owners and workers will continue to see wages go up. several states plan to increase the minimum again next year. >> both maryland and d.c. will see increases in the minimum wage this year. maryland goes up from $7.25 to $8 appear hour tomorrow. d.c. -- an hour tomorrow, d.c. increases from 9.50 to 10.50 on july 1st. >> reporter: it is new year's eve in times square. the can see people for blocks -- stories up. i can see people for blocks. the crowd in new york city's time square started growing early on new year's eve despite frigid temperatures. people filled the streets. some arrived soon after dawn to secure the perfect spot. for this new jersey mother and daughter it's an item off their bucket list. >> this is just so exciting. the energy. it's awesome, so really can't wait. >> reporter: at the center of block party is the famous crystal ball. its midnight descent marks the start of 2015. >> it's a new beginning for me and i figured what a better way to police say there are no specific threats against the new year's celebration, security is high. visitors are screened with both metal and radiation detectors and bomb sniffing dogs are on patrol at survival. the wars in iraq and afghanistan have taken their toll in this country costing an estimated 4 to $6 trillion. some of that money will go to medical care for wounded veterans. folks like active marine miroslav kashmir and former staff sergeant michael kahne. these men and hockey lovers are at nats park as part of the usa warriorsitis hockey program that provides education, training, the people in my unit when i was over in iraq. the best thing about my service was raising up my right hand and taking the oath to defend the country and put the uniform on. >> reporter: michael kahne and miroslav kashmir and many other usa warriors will play right out here on the ice to my left on friday afternoon. they're hoping for a competitive game and a lot of fun and a win. tomorrow they hope the caps beat the blackhawks and there is a prediction from mike kahne of a 5-2 win. today outgoing maryland governor martin o'malley commuted the capital sentences of the last four death row inmates. the prisoners will now serve life behind bars. the state's general assembly abolished the death penalty two years ago. family, friends and police are desperately searching for a missing nurse. kim marie kariah was last seen at 2 p.m. sunday and was not working earlier that day. she's believed to be driving a black 2002 nissan with plates 3md0073. please call police if you have any information. you might remember the fairytale story of eddie and edith, the interracial couple who found romance in their 90s and were married last summer. 95-year-old eddie lacy eddie harris -- eddie harrison have died. >> eddie harrison died yesterday from the flu never getting a chance to see his wife edith again. she is still with her daughter in florida where she was taken in a family dispute over her care. >> i want my wife back home with me. >> reporter: that was eddie harrison earlier this month the day after his wife of six months, 96-year-old edith hill, was removed from her alexandria home that she shared with him and her daughter rebecca. she was then sent to live with another daughter in florida. >> they were always so talkative to the people and we got so many congratulations. there was so much excitement they had and their bucket list, so to speak. >> reporter: the couple had gotten some publicity for their summer wedding dancing the night away. edith's daughter rebecca said they were healthier and happier together. rebecca wright said eddie was never the same after edith was taken from the home. he apparently lost his will to live. >> he had no purpose to get better. i think his immune system was weakened, of course, because he had such passion for her. >> reporter: eddie kept waiting for edith to return often looking out the window, but after a few weeks when she didn't come back he began to get sick. it was the flu. rebecca says he may have just given up. >> the fact that my mom had him made all the difference in her life. >> reporter: her family in florida said edith was told about eddie's death and say she's okay, but the saga is not over. eddie's funeral plans are in the hands of a court-appointed guardian and no decisions on his burial have been made. edith may be too fragile to attend. the flu has preached epidemic level in the u.s. -- reached epidemic level in the u.s. this year according to the cdc. it's year the annual rose parade in california involves special guests. one is a woman who went halfway around the world to help orphans and then her son developed cancer. >> reporter: carrie penner and her 11-year-old son addy never imagined their journey would bring them to the annual parade of roses. in 2004 carrie was an orphan and addy was a toddler with stage 4 neuroblastoma, one of the most incredibly dangerous. they are all very lucky to have survived. hopefully they'll learn better for next time. when there's a big snowfall in the rocky mountains, especially because the slopes are so steep, that's why you don't hear about avalanches happening in the appalachians because our mountains are much lower and the slope isn't as steep as it is in the rocky mountains. >> good insight from erica grow. back home we have temperatures cold enough for snow, but it's cold and dry at the same time. for you snow lovers you'll have to wait. let's look at the michael and son weather cam. right now it's 36 degrees. the dew point is 6, wow, bone dry air. no snow falling now, winds out of the west, southwest at 6 miles per hour. that wind will continue at about 10 miles per hour most of the overnight. you'll have to dress for the 20s and teens tonight. there will be a wind chill 2fanew mostly sunny but cold, so very similar to what we had today. the wind chill remains a factor all day long, but we don't have big gusts tomorrow, just a breeze that will be constant and it will keep poking at you. if you're spending the day outside, especially if you're at the nhl winter classic, you'll feel that wind all day long. temperatures are getting closer to where they should be and it will be milder than average in a couple spots friday. right now it's already cold, 30 degrees in manassas, leesburg and gaithersburg. it's 30 degrees in martinsburg, 30 in cumberland as well, 34 in frederick, so about to dip below freezing in places that aren't below freezing here in the metro area. on satellite and radar you can see how high pressure is keeping things nice and dry over the entire metro, entire dmv, as a matter of fact. we're keeping those clouds out of the forecast. so the factors we have to look for in our forecast the next couple days is the wind and that air temperature and what it feels like when you're outside. the feels like early tomorrow morning, it will feel like 19 degrees in leesburg, 17 in martinsburg, 20 in frederick and gaithersburg, 20 at andrews, so even getting closer to the water we don't have a lot of relief from that cold in the forecast. heading into the afternoon not a ton of relief either. it's going to feel like it's near freezing in places like gaithersburg and martinsburg. it's going to feel like 29 degrees in hagerstown, 36 in la plata, 39 in fredericksburg. the rebound starts friday, 34 for your feels like temperature in the morning in downtown d.c., 28 in leesburg and frederick. in the afternoon it will feel like it's in the 40s as you led through the beltway and points south -- head through the beltway and points south. we do have milder tempere forecast, but for tomorrow when folks will probably spend some time outside, that's when we'll have really cold temperatures. overnight if you're heading to a new year's eve celebration, bundle up, 20 to 26 degrees, winds out of the west, southwest at 10 miles per hour. tomorrow morning wind chills in the 20s, temperatures in the 20s and 30s under a partly to mostly sunny sky. in the afternoon reaching up to around 40 degrees, lots of sunshine, still a bit breezy with winds out southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. here's your all important forecast for that nhl winter classic, only 35 degrees at 11:00 and that's even downtown near nats park, 38 degrees at 1:00 as the game is getting started. that wind continues out of the southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. it will be a factor even if you're sitting in the stands. maybe it's a good day to sit inside and make sure that you're all bundled up by the fire or just watch wusa9 all night and tomorrow again. as we head into friday, 48 degrees, more clouds, still dry. saturday some showers and a high of 42 degrees. in the first alert seven-day forecast some showers will move through sunday and we could see some windy conditions moving in, a high of 50 degrees, but temperatures tumble again on monday. up investigators have any leads at this point? >> reporter: investigators are looking hard looking and identifying a suspect, but no one has been arrested. the call came out around 1 a.m. for a suspicious vehicle this morning and when police got here, they found the 29-year- old cab driver shot to death. >> the drivers here, they are like family to us and, of course, we love some of our family members and especially this gentleman. he was a good buy. >> reporter: bob nadley, the owner of silver cab mourns the loss of one of their own. he says khdeir yaya leased a car from his company. last night he picked up a fare at addison metro station, but he wasn't found until close to 1 a.m. this morning at balsam tree drive in capitol heights. >> want to make a living an honest way and for somebody to take somebody's life this way. >> reporter: last weekend a taxi driver in d.c. was beaten, robbed and thrown in the trunk of the car. >> their -- nighttime i don't drive. daytime wusa9 news. >> details are hard to listen to. a cab driver shot and killed after picking up a passenger in capitol heights and police are looking for the gunman. surae chinn is live in the neighborhood where it happened. >> reporter: the 29-year-old cab driver from ethiopia was found in the 800 block of in capitol heights maryland and police are searching for a shooter. the owner of the company silver cab of prince george's county says khdeir yaya leased his car from them and has been driving for them for two years. he said he was a good guy, a good driver and he had picked someone up after being flagged down at the addison metro station. at 6:00 we talk to the cab company owner, other cab drivers. they say they feel they've lost a family member coming up in the next hour. prince george's county police made an arrest in a murder in fairmount heights. alexis henderson is now charged with first degree murder. it's thought henderson got into an argument with the victim rafael frazier that ended with frazier being stabbed to death. his body was found inside a home on wood hill court yesterday morning and cops found henderson in the district last night driving a car stolen from frazier's local. search crews prepare for another full day of recovery in the waters off indonesia. the grim task of identifying bodies of those found so far from air asia flight 8501 is also underway. craig boswell has the latest. >> reporter: search teams in indonesia are trying to work around high winds and rough seas to locate more victims of air asia flight 8501, the jetliner was about halfway through its two hour flight from indonesia to singapore when it disappeared from radar sunday. cbs news has learned indonesian officials believe the pilot attempted a steep climb to get out of the bad weather before the plane went down. authorities in charge of the investigation, though, cannot confirm that until the so- called black boxes are located. the flight data recorders can provide investigators with critical information about the plane's altitude, air speed and engine performance as well as a recording of the pilot's last words. cbs news confirmed a sonar image believed to be thman fuselage is upside down -- main fuselage is upside down at the bottom of the java sea. the first of the 162 people on board arrived in surabaya wednesday and now the identification process begins. victims' families are given detailed descriptions of their loved ones along with blood samples for dna matching in hopes of speeding up the identification process. craig boswell, cbs news. >> so far searchers have recovered only seven bodies including one of ight attendants. dramatic new home video of that greece ferry fire nearly 100 people still missing, 13 people confirmed dead according to skynews.com. the fire happened sunday in the adriatic sea and a ship was carrying 400 people. investigators are worried the death toll will rise. it looks like d.c. residents will ring in the new year without streetcars. the trolleys are on the road, on the eighth street corridor but just test runs without passengers. the gray administration hoped residents would be enjoying them by now, but safety concerns delayed the launch. ddot still has to complete a safety report. >> it was like oh, street cars are going to be going any minute, blah, blah, blah, you'll have such great transportation to get to union, blah, blah, blah. >> people will be upset because we had thought the trolleys were going to be here almost two years ago. >> the $123 million projects began all the way back in 2008. mayor gray says ddot will workday and night to get passengers safely riding on those trolleys. as new year's eve partiers are in for a chilly night, first alert meteorologist erica grow joins us now. how cold will it get tonight? >> it will feel like it's in the 20s, even upper teens after a really chilly end to the year. we only got up to 39 degrees today, our average high 44. we started the day at 29 degrees. it's going to be even colder today. you'll see that in the feels like forecast. this is when you combine, of course, the air temperature with the wind speed and as you're waking up early tomorrow morning, it's going to feel like 20 in frederick, 20 in gaithersburg, 16 in hagerstown, 23 in fredericksburg. so that chill will remain in the air. if you're heading to the nhl winter classic tomorrow, even in the afternoon, it's still going to feel like it's in the low 30s to mid-30s and it won't get any better until we get to the weekend. so that chill will still be in the air even early on friday morning. overnight tonight if you're heading out for those new year's eve celebrations, make sure you have the winter coat of, 20 to 26 degrees, wind chills in the teens and 20s with that west, southwest wind at 10 miles per hour. we'll talk about the warm-up and the chance for rain coming up in the first alert seven- day. changes are coming to redskins park following another losing season. today general manager bruce allen announced that defensive coordinator jim haslett is no longer with the organization. sports anchor kristen berset is here with more. >> redskins fans have been begging for some major changes to happen in ashburn. of course, they went to a new owner of the team. it's not going to happen any time soon. they also have been calling for general manager bruce allen to get fired. that doesn't appear to be happening either. in fact, today allen gave his annual postseason press conference to talk about the state of the franchise which is 28-52 in his five years as general manager. he s pokeabout 40 minutes. it got pretty testy at times. he promised to reevaluate the program, make some changes, the first which of we now know is a new defensive coordinator. jim haslett and the redskins agreed to part ways. this was haslet's fifth year with the team in. that team the redskins' defense collectively finished 29th in total yard and 30th in points allowed. on monday head coach jay gruden said he would recommend the team keep haslett, but two days later that's not the case. here's bruce allen explaining what happened. >> jay and jim have been talking the last few days and this morning when they were talking, they decided it was the best way for both sides and i appreciate coach haslett's work and what he's done for the redskins, but i think it was the right decision. >> bruce allen said the team planned on reaching out to other candidates beginning today but wouldn't give any kind of timetable when they plan to make a new hire, but did he say it would eventually be up to jay gruden to pick the new defensive coand who he wanted to work with. >> it sounded like he wanted to him. he can. saying he wanted to keep him. >> he came in when mike shanahan and bruce allen came in, but it's pretty obvious something needed to change, so a mutually parting of the ways. we're just getting started on wusa9 news at 5:00. has been canceled. mcfadden's liquor license was suspended because it was claimed there was an imminent danger of the health and safety to the public after five people were stabbed over the weekend. mcfadden's has 72 hours to appeal the decision. new information on what police call the mob assault of a pizza delivery plan. it happened december 9th on fletcher road in sterling. the loudoun county you, you can just spend new year's with us. >> yeah. >> where it's warm. >> it's a great way to stay warm because it will be very cold tonight, even by d.c. standards and by this time of year we are seeing some of the coldest temperatures, but it will feel like it's way below freezing even at midnight tonight. here we go with the michael and son weather cam. you can see it was sunny today. we have lots of blue sky overhead, but that sunshine was deceiving. it was cold and look at how dry it is, too. right now the temperature is 36, but the dew point is only 6 degrees. so that adds an extra element of dryness to the air that really makes it feel bitingly cold. that will factor in when the wind starts to pick up overnight into tomorrow. so make sure you bundle up for the teens and 20s overnight tonight. tomorrow morning will be mostly sunny and all day long it's going to stay cold, plus the wind chill will be a factor all day. keep that in mind if you're heading to the nhl winter classic. friday will be seasonably chilly. temperatures will start to rebound a bit heading into friday. now it's already below freezing in hagerstown. it's 31 degrees. it's 30 in martinsburg, 36 in culpeper and orange, 36 in washington and 33 at andrews. just about everyone is going to dip below freezing when that sun sets and here's satellite and radar. plenty of cloud cover to our south and north but none really over us. high pressure will continue to nudge its way toward us keeping things cold and dry. as we head through the day thursday, that area of high pressure starts to slide to the east, but we don't have any precipitation in our forecast until the weekend. some clouds move toward us friday, but no rain and with a little bit of a breeze out of the west and southwest we will start to bump temperatures up. however, saturday here comes our next storm system and by the time we get into saturday evening rain will be falling. at least it's not wintery weather. overnight tonight if we had precipitation, it would be icy. so thank goodness we don't have that in the forecast. at 8 p.m. 33 degrees, 31 at midnight. so already below freezing downtown d.c.ked -- downtown d.c. at midnight and it will be mostly clear and cold, overnight lows between 20 and 26 degrees, wind out of the west, southwest continue at 10 miles per hour. tomorrow morning will be another cold start, temperatures in the 20s and 30s and that wind chill maintains in the 20s as well with winds out of the west, southwest at 10 to 15. heading into the afternoon mostly sunny skies, a high around 40 degrees, still a little breezy and stillly, winds out of the southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. by friday we're back to where we should be this time of year, 48 degrees. so it's a couple degrees above our average and then saturday we're watching that storm system approach. it will be slow to arrive. we'll see dry conditions in the morning changing over to some showers in afternoon and a high of 42 degrees. timing is everything with this one. we're getting the weather just in time for those temperatures to be above freezing so we aren't concerned about wintery weather here in the immediate metro area. in the first alert seven-day forecast sunday is the warmest day with 50 degrees, but it's going to be a little breezy and we'll have on and off rain showers all day and then temperatures plunge back into the 30s as we head back to work and school on monday. in tonight's consumer alert not such a great day for the stock market. >> but it has been a good year overall. today the dow industrials lost 159 points, the nasdaq dropping 41 points, but for the year the dow gained 7% . volkswagen beetle, jetta and passat from 2014 and 2015 and the golf in 2015, no injuries have been reported on these recalls. white castle says customers were asking for a meat alternative. >> i don't know who those people were, but the veggieburger is chockful of vegetables like carrots, zucchini and broccoli and costs 99 cents. white castle said it got rave reviews. >> no one goes to white castle for a veggie burger. millions who make minimum wage are getting a raise on new year's. >> reporter: from fast food restaurants to retail stores, millions minimum wage workers are getting a pay bump in the new year including jade anderson. >> i've been a cashier 20 plus years, so it will impact me and my family. >> reporter: at least 23 states will have a higher minimum wage in 2015. in missouri the wage is going up to $7.65 an hour. in maryland it's $8. workers in washington will get 9.47 an hour. add in states with previous wage hikes and 29 will be taking above the federal level of 7.25 an hour. >> what do we want? >> reporter: but many workers want more. nationwide protests in 2014 called for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage. new jersey garage owner john o'connor pays his entry level employees a state minimum which moves the to 8.38 an hour. he can hand -- moves up to $8.38 an hour. he can handle the increase now, but it will force companies to raise prices. >> on the small stuff, those prices will have to go up. as my costs go up, i have to pass it on. >> reporter: many business owners and workers will continue to see wages go up. several states plan to increase the minimum again next year. >> both maryland and d.c. will see increases in the minimum wage this year. maryland goes up from $7.25 to $8 appear hour tomorrow. d.c. -- an hour tomorrow, d.c. increases from 9.50 to 10.50 on july 1st. >> reporter: it is new year's eve in times square. the coast right now. people are talking about 17 hours standing in the cold to watch the ball drop. as we're standing here, we're coming to you from the roof of the marriott marquee about 10 shows up. i can see people for blocks -- stories up. i can see people for blocks. the crowd in new york city's time square started growing early on new year's eve despite frigid temperatures. people filled the streets. some arrived soon after dawn to secure the perfect spot. for this new jersey mother and daughter it's an item off their bucket list. >> this is just so exciting. the energy. it's awesome, so really can't wait. >> reporter: at the center of block party is the famous crystal ball. its midnight descent marks the start of 2015. >> it's a new beginning for me and i figured what a better way to start it out. >> reporter: as times square fills to capacity police are shutting down streets and all organizers expect about 1 million people to show up. anna weiner is here from germany. while police say there are no specific threats against the new year's celebration, security is high. visitors are screened with both metal and radiation detectors and bomb sniffing dogs are on patrol at teams monitor hundreds of live cameras for nissan of trouble. nissan-- for times of trouble. as the ball drops along with the temperature more than 1 billion people are expected to tune in from around the world. remember about 1 million people gathering in times square as we speak. there are no food vendors allowed in the enclosed secured area, no alcohol allowed and there are no portable capital tomorrow, but today a different kind of battle, a real one with losses and how hockey is making things better. diane roberts has more from nats park. >> reporter: we are here at nats park as you said. there is a rehearsal going on for the big festivities tomorrow. that's why our cameras are turned this way. we cannot give you any of those secrets. by this time tomorrow we'll have been through a hockey game. we know who is going to win, but earlier today stop hockey loving military men were on -- some hockey loving military men were on hand to share their stories of war and survival. the wars in iraq and afghanistan have taken their toll in this country costing an estimated 4 to $6 trillion. some of that money will go to medical care for wounded veterans. folks like active marine miroslav kashmir and former staff sergeant michael kahne. these men and hockey lovers are at nats park as part of the usa warriorsitis hockey program that provides education, training, motivation and encouragement for u.s. military members who have been injured while serving. sergeant kashmir likes the comradery. >> to help us psychologically and dealing with the pain. tremendously helps. >> reporter: staff sergeant kahne has been able to play the sport he loves and meet players like caps captain alex ovechkin and defense nan john carlson. >> to be an -- defenseman john carlson. >> reporter: even up if events like the winter classic couldn't -- fun events like the winter classic couldn't happen without the sacrifice of military men and women. >> the hardest part was leaving the people in my unit when i was over in iraq. the best thing about my service was raising up my right hand and taking the oath to defend the country and put the uniform on. >> reporter: michael kahne and miroslav kashmir and many other usa warriors will play right out here on the ice to my left on friday afternoon. they're hoping for a competitive game and a lot of fun and a win. tomorrow they harrison have died. >> eddie harrison died yesterday from the flu never getting a chance to see his wife edith again. she is still with her daughter in florida where she was taken in a family dispute over her care. >> i want my wife back home with me. >> reporter: that was eddie harrison earlier this month the day after his wife of six months, 96-year-old edith hill, was removed from her alexandria home that she shared with him and her daughter rebecca. she was then sent to live with another daughter in florida. >> they were always so talkative to the people and we got so many congratulations. there was so much excitement they had and their bucket list, so to speak. >> reporter: the couple had gotten some publicity for their summer wedding dancing the night away. edith's daughter rebecca said they were healthier and happier together. rebecca wright said eddie was never the same after edith was taken from the home. he apparently lost his will to live. >> he had no purpose to get better. i think his immune system was weakened, of course, because he had such passion for her. >> reporter: eddie kept waiting for edith to return often looking out the window, but after a few weeks when she didn't come back he began to get sick. it was the flu. rebecca says he may have just given up. >> the fact that my mom had him made all the difference in her life. >> reporter: her family in florida said edith was told about eddie's death and say she's okay, but the saga is not over. eddie's funeral plans are in the hands of a court-appointed guardian and no year the annual rose parade in california involves special guests. one is a woman who went halfway around the world to help orphans and then her son developed cancer. >> reporter: carrie penner and avalanche and turn around and just started running. it was thunderous sound, sounded like an airplane going over us, heart was beating. i didn't know if it was going to cover us. i did not know the extent what it could do, but it felt like it was time to make split second decisions for sure. >> wow. the couple and some friends were checking out ice caves a few hours north of seattle. colby saw erica grow. back home we have temperatures cold enough for snow, but it's cold and dry at the same time. for you snow lovers you'll have to wait. let's look at the michael and son weather cam. right now it's 36 degrees. the dew point is 6, wow, bone dry air. no snow falling now, winds out of the west, southwest at 6 miles per hour. that wind will continue at about 10 miles per hour most of the overnight. you'll have to dress for the 20s and teens tonight. there will be a wind chill 2fanew mostly sunny but cold, so very similar to what we had today. the wind chill remains a factor all day long, but we don't have big gusts tomorrow, just a breeze that will be constant and it will keep poking at you. if you're spending the day outside, especially if you're at the nhl winter classic, you'll feel that wind all day long. temperatures are getting closer to where they should be and it will be milder than average in a couple spots friday. right now it's already cold, 30 degrees in manassas, leesburg and gaithersburg. it's 30 degrees in martinsburg, 30 in cumberland as well, 34 in frederick, so about to dip below freezing in places that aren't below freezing here in the metro area. on satellite and radar you can see how high pressure is keeping things nice and dry over the entire metro, entire dmv, as a matter of fact. we're keeping those clouds out of the forecast. so the factors we have to look for in our forecast the next couple days is the wind and that air temperature and what it feels like when you're outside. the feels like early tomorrow morning, it will feel like 19 degrees in leesburg, 17 in martinsburg, 20 in frederick and gaithersburg, 20 at andrews, so even getting closer to the water we don't have a lot of relief from that cold in the forecast. heading into the afternoon not a ton of relief either. it's going to feel like it's near freezing in places like gaithersburg and martinsburg. it's going to feel like 29 degrees in hagerstown, 36 in la plata, 39 in fredericksburg. the rebound starts friday, 34 for your feels like temperature in the morning in downtown d.c., 28 in leesburg and frederick. in the afternoon it will feel like it's in the 40s as you led through the beltway and points south -- head through the beltway and points south. we do have milder tempere forecast, but for tomorrow when folks will probably spend some time outside, that's when we'll have really cold temperatures. overnight if you're heading to a new year's eve celebration, bundle up, 20 to 26 degrees, winds out of the west, southwest at 10 miles per hour. tomorrow morning wind chills in the 20s, temperatures in the 20s and 30s under a partly to mostly sunny sky. in the afternoon reaching up to around 40 degrees, lots of sunshine, still a bit breezy with winds out southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. here's your all important forecast for that nhl winter classic, only 35 degrees at 11:00 and that's even downtown near nats park, 38 degrees at 1:00 as the game is getting started. that wind continues out of the southwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. it will be a factor even if you're sitting in the stands. maybe it's a good day to sit inside and make sure that you're all bundled up by the fire or just watch wusa9 all night and tomorrow again. as we head into friday, 48 degrees, more clouds, still dry. saturday some showers and a high of 42 degrees. in the first alert seven-day forecast some showers will move through sunday and we could see some windy conditions moving in, a high of 50 degrees, but temperatures tumble again on monday. up
