The heat was on in federal court as former virginia governor, Bob Mcdonnell faced some harsh questioning from the prosecution. Peggy fox joins us live from the richmond courthouse and peg, how did he explain all the gifts he received . Well, he says he didnt know about a lot of them. Especially those ones he wife received that she didnt tell him about. The prosecution is doing a very good job reiterating and pounding on its time line of the communication between the mcdonnells and williams. Every time the mcdonnells received a gift, it looks like the governor did something for Johnny Williams. I just havent seen the sign in a month. Bob mcdonnell is clearly uncomfortable on the stand. Under tough questioning by u. S. Prosecutor, michael dry, and a strong add minishment from a judge. Very early on, exercising control over the courtroom saying he didnt want to hear extended explanations. Simply answer the question that this is my courtroom, youre no longer in the governor. Down to what mcdonnell knew. Not have known Johnny Williams spent 20,000 on designer clothes for his wife. The prosecutor brought out and got an agreement from Bob Mcdonnell that Maureen Mcdonnell had a history of asking wealthy people for freebies and then Bob Mcdonnell suggesting that somehow he was then oblivious to Johnny Williams providing this shopping trip. The former governor also says he didnt know about williams 50,000 loan to his wife at first. When she told him about it, was very upset. But under questioning, mcdonnell admitted he didnt call Johnny Williams about the loan for a month. You claim that you were very upset, that Maureen Mcdonnell got this loan that you didnt need. No one needed. And Bob Mcdonnell said, i spoke to Johnny Williams about the terms, but i waited 45 days. And then he tried to backtrack a little bit and said well, it wasnt my loan, it was her loan, but if it was her loan, why is Bob Mcdonnell talking about the terms . Mcdonnell is insisting he was not financially strapped and did not need Johnny Williams money. But when williams wrote a for kalin mcdonnells wedding reception, the mcdonnells only had 12,000 cash on hand in three Different Bank accounts, including one that was his wifes. The prosecution also used photographs onnells against them that showed a couple coming into court hand in hand during a hearing process prior to this trial. In and out prosecution keeps chipping away at this defense notion that the marriage is broken. In fact, they presented evidence and talking to Bob Mcdonnell, they have taken 18 out of town trips together in 22 months. Coming up at 6 00, well tell you whether or not Bob Mcdonnell remembered a picture of him holding a bottle of anatabloc. Reporting live in richmond, back to you. Joining us with more insight, experience working for the federal public defenders office. Matt, you heard peggys report. Today was all about attacking the narrative. Well start with peggy left off. This was a troubled marriage and no way they could have conspired together and the jury hears about trips they took together and they see pictures of them walking in hand in hand earlier this year. That is exactly right. The government is trying to do theirs. They are trying to show the idea that the marriage was in trouble was something that was invented, it was baked up as they were getting ready for trial. Its a lie they are trying to pedal to the jury. 18 vacations in 22 months, the pictures of them holding hands, all of that is just after the fact stuff to sell the jury a line of good. The prosecutor was essentially trying to tear down what a governor had to say and build up the governments case. How did he do today . Thats exactly right. When you look at what happened, the prosecutor came out of the box and you asked all the questions that reestablished his case. You asked about the money that changed hands. He asked about the vacation houses and the vacation trips together and the golf trips. All of that the governor had to say yes, that happened, yes, that happened over and over again. To basically admit to core parts of governments case on the stand in front of the jury. At one point today, we heard a little bit from the judge who basically was putting the governor on notice that he was in charge of this courtroom. What can we read from the judges actions and the subtle clues from the jury about how this case ng. Sure, those are the things you try to read during the trial. Last week, governor mc made a joke about riding in the fer rarely. Ferrari. Those are the Little Things you look for. When a jury is not laughing, if the judge is telling you that he is answering the question differently, if a judge seems impatient with you, those are small signals the jurors pick up on. The more of those that dont go the governors way, it can start to color how a jury looks at the case and how the jury looks at the governor. Another fascinating day in that richmond courtroom. Good to see you. Jan. Three sex assaults in northwest d. C. In five days now investigators are looking into the possibility that they are all related. They all happened in the mt.
