secondary and residential roads and see for yourself. you can see the slushy mix and some potholes or even water puddles, icy puddles. you move to the residential area and it is very spotty. that made for some dangerous conditions. >> try to drive safe in the snow. >> reporter: some drivers did not make it very far this morning after a scary episode in the snow. several people were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. a driver lost control, slamming into oncoming traffic causing a four-car pileup on fairfax county parkway at sunrise valley drive in reston. >> i skated a couple times, but besides that most of the roads are pretty plowed. >> reporter: along route 7 in loudoun county a few drivers ended up in ditches. >> the neighborhoods are very, very scary. they're very -- i slide all over the place. >> main roads are great. the back roads are still a little slippery. i've got my little baby girl in the back, so i'm trying to go slow of. >> reporter: plow truck drivers began the day at a bone chilling 13 degrees in whipping winds. >> the roads were pretty bad this morning. >> reporter: in neighborhoods in herndon people are digging out. >> we're shoveling our way out in our little winter wonderland here. we're enjoying it. >> reporter: one thing you may not think about in your own residential neighborhood, manhole covers. loudoun county authorities say beware because some snowplow drivers are taking them out as they clean your streets. >> i hit a manhole and it cracked my oil pan. >> reporter: jorge diaz has been working since 3:00 yesterday afternoon until the manhole accident. >> it was a pickup truck that hit it. then i hit that. we're expecting another storm on sunday, so got to have it up and running by sunday. >> very cold and very windy right now. what can you do? we'll cope. >> reporter: the concern tonight is that these puddles, these slushy areas will freeze over overnight into the weekend. vdot will work on these areas and clearing the roads in the secondary residential roads overnight. back to you. >> the only good news, no morning rush on saturday. meantime the hov lanes on i- 95 in virginia had to be shut down this morning, things too slick early on. a handful of crashes made a mess before the crews could treat the roads. in maryland a pickup truck with a plow on front lost control and you see how it ended up in aspen hill this morning upside down, nobody hurt. it came to rest in somebody's front yard 50 feet off the road. look at the picture of the storm from nasa, so large that at one point it covered about 1/3 of the u.s. that's about 100 million people in 22 states in the path of the storm. in new york a dashboard camera was rolling when this driver lost control on the long island expressway, whoa. that road was actually closed for several hours overnight to try and avoid anyone getting stranded on the road. in parts of massachusetts people woke up to nearly 2 feet of snow. the blizzard brought concerns about high tides along the coast. thankfully all those storm walls held up. from michigan on to maine once the snow was done the temperature dropped like a stone. in minnesota the mercury fell down to 40 degrees below 0 and if this isn't already cold enough for you, get ready for more of a big chill next week. first alert meteorologist erica grow is in for topper and has the details on that. we are in for some serious cold around here. >> when we head back to work and school next week, it will be bone chilling, as if today wasn't bad enough. i wanted to start off with a couple snowfall totals that were surprising to me and to topper and howard. we got a little more than expected in dunkirk, maryland, 4.1 inches, about 4 inches in st. charles, maryland. we expected that southern maryland would pick up no more than about 1 inch, but you did end up with more than that. you can see that in upper loudoun county in a stripe through to northern montgomery county and southern frederick county, that's an area that picked up at least 5 inches of snow. in general we had expected 2 to 4 in those locations. so it looks like temperatures will be dipping with that fresh snow cover overnight tonight. we're already down in the teens in a couple spots. i'll have more on that coming up in the first alert seven-day forecast when we finally start to get milder. when temps hit teens or single digits, it's not only dangerous to your health but puts your home straight in the crosshairs. debra alfarone has two simple things you can do and should do this weekend to save yourself heartache and thousands of dollars worth of damage. >> reporter: it's not just the money or inconvenience, if anyone who has ever had any damage to their home can tell you, it is the heartache of having something happen to your home. we invited an expert to share some tips. the first is how to avoid having your pipes burst. i'm here with billy simon from russ insurance. you're going to tell us how to winterize a home. no. 1 thing we need to do? >> letting water run on your faucets is the no. 1 thing people overlook doing. if you let it run like that overnight, you should be okay. >> reporter: every sink? >> i'd do every sink. >> reporter: what about pipes outside? >> pipes outside, hoses, drain your hoses. turn your spigot all the way off. you don't have to cut the main water cutoff to the spigot off, not on the inside of the house but on the outside, turn it off. take the hose off and train it of excess water when it's not already frozen. now anything is backlogged. any vendor you call for anything it will take forever to get them here. so everybody is busy. >> reporter: it's not just you. it's everyone on your block and in the next neighborhood. >> and it's airlines and carpet cleaning and water remediation and mold remediation and plumbers, electricians. no one is moving very quickly. >> reporter: and as what happens when you have a live shot with a lot of kids playing with snow, we've got them all around us, but you want to make sure certainly that the house is safe, right, guys? >> yes. >> reporter: to recap you want to have the water dripping from all of your faucets. when we come back, you know what we're going to do, guys? >> what? >> reporter: i love this. it's a great audience. we're going to show you exactly what else you need to do and we have two tips that have to do with -- what's up on the top, guys? the roof. back to you. >> i love your audience. as someone who has dealt with a busted pipe before inside the house, i can relate to all those tips, very valuable information. at 5:30 we'll speak with aaa about making sure your car is ready for the deep freeze. right now crews are trying to figure out what sparked a fair at the fairfax county strip mall, sky9 out over the scene in the last hour or so. a whole bunch of equipment is there. it was a two alarm fire in a shopping center along arlington boulevard across from lowman's plaza. we're not sure how much that will cost to rebuild, nobody hurt. it all turned out to be a hoax, but investigators from georgia to bowie, maryland, remember in an uproar this week after a -- were in an uproar that week after a series of tweets offered a blow by blow account of the rape and murder of an -- of the rape of an unconscious young woman. >> reporter: in the sometimes terrifying wild west of the wild web it sounded all too possible. early new year's morning a man with a handle little juan tweeted out a photo of a passed out young woman and said somebody put something in her drink, me and my brother about to rape this b. it continued. her pulse not even beating no more. stop telling me to call the police. i look like snitching? somebody else jumped in. i changed her clothes and she's sleeping peacefully now and it got worse. i got that b in my trunk right now. ha ha ha. call the cops. tell them she only has 10 minutes of oxygen left. in alarm several people who knew the tweeters contacted the bowie police hoping they could rescue the woman. >> so, of course, we took that very seriously. >> reporter: investigators quickly figured out it was a couple of teens from nearby high schools and when they confronted them, they determined there was no girl, no rape, no murder. >> they had thought it would be a funny thing to cut and paste a photo from another website, put it on their twitter accounts and make these highly inappropriate comments about them. >> reporter: the next day someone deleted the twitter account and the police chief says the teens appeared remorseful, but the chief says merely posting a vicious joke does not constitute a crime. >> sat down, counseled them about the inappropriateness of the actions, talked to their parents about it. so hopefully there will be a life lesson involved. >> reporter: it could well haunt them for life, while the account is gone the tweets have been captured and live on on the internet. bruce leshan, wusa9. >> oh, my. bowie police chief is hoping this incident may spark serious conversations between kids and their parents about what's appropriate behavior on social media. today the obama administration responded to a supreme court justice's decision to block a key component of the affordable care act. as danielle nottingham reports, justice sonia sotomayor granted a catholic group a stay after they argued providing birth control is against their religious beliefs. >> reporter: the justice department said supreme court justice sonia sotomayor should stop blocking the new healthcare law provision that requires some religious organizations to provide insurance that includes birth control. solicitor general donald verilli filed papers friday morning that say nothing in the law will make the little sisters of the poor pay for birth control for their employees making their complaint baseless. when religious groups first objected, the obama administration offered a compromise allowing nonprofit faith-based groups to pass on the responsibility of providing contraceptive coverage to the insurance companies. the lawyer representing the little sisters says even signing the government form violates their beliefs. >> the piece of paper is essentially a permission slip, but it's a permission slip that has coercive effect on the receiver. the receiver is then required by law to do something little sisters say we can't do and we shouldn't force someone else to do. >> reporter: it's not clear when justice sotomayor will make a decision, but the supreme court has agreed to hear two other cases challenging the contraceptive mandate in march. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. plans are in the work to enact emergency legislation to fix problems with maryland's health exchange. senate president mike miller says lawmakers might consider allowing additional time for people to enroll in healthcare plans without being penalized. an emergency measure could be taken up when the general assembly convenes next week. a new mental health task force gets to work in virginia tuesday. governor mcdonnell has appointed 37 people to that task force including mental health workers, hospital administrators and law enforcement authorities. the project was created after the death of the son of state senator creigh deeds. gus deeds stabbed his dad repeatedly before killing himself. according to the richmond times dispatch, gun sales were up 11% in the old dominion last year. that dramatic increase brought sales to an all time high. the paper says sales were particularly brisk early in the year with transactions for the first four months up, get this, 116%. the white house making a new push to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental health issues. this time the changes are executive actions that do not require congressional approval. the latest measures are aimed at strengthening federal background checks for gun buyers. the white house announced those changes while president obama was vacationing in hawaii. the family of a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead in california will be allowed to move the teen. a judge ruled that jahi mcmath's mother can remove the girl from the hospital so long as she assumes responsibility for the move. the hospital says it does not want to be held accountable if jahi goes into cardiac arrest. she's been on a ventilator nearly a month after complications following a tonsil lecture. a coroner -- a tonsillectomy. a coroner's report says the car that paul walker was riding in when it crashed was going over 100 miles an hour. walker and his friend roger rodis were both killed november 30th in that crash when rodis lost control of the car. a lengthy agenda waits lawmakers as they head back to capitol hill. >> first some local lawmakers ready to take matters into their own hands. they say congress dropped it would be much better if congress did the right thing and got together, broke the impasse and passed it increasing the federal minimum wage, but that's not happening and so the states have begun to act. >> today several members of the montgomery county delegation to the maryland statehouse threw their support behind a push to raise the minimum wage in maryland. the general assembly plans to take up a bill in the upcoming session that would make the minimum wage $10.10 an hour by 2016. more than a dozen other states have raised their minimum wages as of january 1st. today president obama announced he plans to hold an event at the white house tuesday, his goal? pushing the congress to restore unemployment benefits for the 1.3 million americans who lost them last weekend. that's just one of a lot of things on a long list of items on the congressional agenda for the coming year. that list is the topic of this weekend's face the nation. bob schieffer is here now to talk about that. surely the congress has a long list of things to do, but how much influence will the president really have on what's on that list? >> well, they can't get much worse, i guess. you can't say they're going to have a worse year than last year, which as far as i can tell is probably the least productive session of congress that i can recall and i've been here now going on 46 years. so the list of things to do is as long as my arm starting with the president apparently wants the first thing out of the box to be to deal with this unemployment insurance. i think that's going to be a top of priority for democrats, but there are also a lot of other things out there. what are they going to do about immigration reform? what about reducing the deficit? what is going to be the fate of obamacare? what about the national security agency? is edward snowden a hero as some people say or is he somebody that ought to be behind bars? eventually washington has to deal with all those things. so we're going to talk to harry reid. he almost never comes on the sunday show, so my sense of it is he's got something he wants to talk about. we'll find out what that is. >> it's interesting the speaker of the house does seem interested on moving forward on thing. you mentioned immigration reform. we saw the budget deal go through. is there a different spirit this session? >> well, there might be. i want to believe that there is. i don't want to be overboard on this, but i think we're going to see more this year. i think for one thing i think seeing john boehner come out as he did when he decided to take on those tea party people, he's got some problems within his own caucus and that's kind of reflect active of the republican party in general. -- reflective of the republican party in general. it's almost now like we're developing into having three parties, the democrats, republicans and tea party and how boehner can bring those together i think in some ways that mitch mcconnell, republican leader in the senate has the same kind of problem. that's going to be the interesting thing to watch here over these next two or three months especially. i'd like to think that maybe they're going to get something done, but we'll find out. >> bob schieffer, majority leader reid, face the nation sunday, we're looking forward to watching that. thank you, bob. former virginia first lady ann holton has been named to governor elect terry mcauliffe's cabinet as the new education secretary. she is the a long time child advocate and former juvenile and domestic relations court judge. helping you plan your day, wusa9 first alert weather. >> if you don't like cold weather, this is not your time of year. >> absolutely not. we're going to see temperatures plummet tonight as if it wasn't cold enough and then a brief reprieve before the temperatures get really cold again next week. let's start off with a look at the michael and son weather cam. we have snow on our shot now from reagan national airport and a distant view of the monument there. it's 23 degrees now with the dew point of 1. it's brutally cold with winds out of the north, northwest at 7 miles per hour. in our weather headlines it will be bitterly cold overnight tonight, at least the wind chills diminishing because the wind speeds aren't going to be as strong. we will still have wind chills in the 0's and teens as we head through the morning hours tomorrow and then heading further into the weekend it does get a little milder. so high temperatures will get closer to their seasonal average sunday, but it will come at a price. we'll see some rain showers developing late in the day. right now it is 18 degrees already in gaithersburg, 19 in frederick, 20 in martinsburg, 25 in culpeper and you see we just dropped to 24 degrees in fredericksburg. when you factor in the winds, it feels like 4 degrees in gaithersburg, feels like 5 in hagerstown, feels like 9 at andrews and it feels like 14 degrees right now in fredericksburg. you can see here on satellite and radar the clearing skies that we have overhead, that along with the diminishing winds are really going to allow temperatures to drop. we'll stay clear for the most part saturday on 9 futurecast, but some cloud cover is starting to approach during the day sunday staying dry until at least noon and then a band of showers moves in and in could cause some freezing rain on top of that snow -- and this could cause some freezing rain on top of that snowpack. overnight tonight mostly clear to partly cloudy, 7 to 15, winds southeasterly at 5 to 10 miles per hour. in the morning hours it's going to be partly cloudy, temperatures in the single digits and teens, south winds 5 to 15. in the afternoon mostly sunny, just a bit blustery. it's not going to be as windy as today, wind chills in the teens with highs between 30 and 38, winds becoming southerly at 10 to 15 miles per hour. now i'm keeping 9 weather alerts green the next three days. we might upgrade to yellow sunday or monday. black ice is a real concern as we head into morning monday. it's going to turn windy again with a high of 30 five early in the day and temperatures -- 35 early in the day and temperatures plummeting in the afternoon. look at that overnight low, 8 degrees. that will be the coldest temperature we've had here in d.c. in years. in the first alert seven-day forecast a high of only 20 on tuesday. wednesday is starting to rebound but still very cold, high 28 degrees, partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain and snow showers on thursday, more likely snow than rain and than a chilly but more seasonable friday. so a big stretch of cold weather in our forecast. bundle up. >> in time for the weekend. out of the trying pan into the fire may not apply when you're stuck on ice, the latest term for those researchers stranded in antarctica still ahead. >> still stranded. >> and how do you really feel about a metro fare hike? speak now or my dad has aor afib.brillation, he has the most common kind... ...it's not caused by a heart valve problem. dad, it says your afib puts you at 5 times greater risk of a stroke. that's why i take my warfarin every day. but it looks like maybe we should ask your doctor about pradaxa. in a clinical trial, pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate mesylate)... ...was proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke. and unlike warfarin, with no regular blood tests or dietary restrictions. hey thanks for calling my doctor. sure. pradaxa is not for people with artificial heart valves. don't stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. stopping increases your risk of stroke. ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before surgery or a medical or dental procedure. pradaxa can cause serious, sometimes fatal, bleeding. don't take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding or have had a heart valve replaced. seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk if you're 75 or older, have a bleeding condition or stomach ulcer, take aspirin, nsaids, or blood thinners... ...or if you have kidney problems, especially if you take certain medicines. tell your doctors about all medicines you take. pradaxa side effects include indigestion, stomach pain, upset, or burning. if you or someone you love has afib not caused by a heart valve problem... ...ask your doctor about reducing the risk of stroke with pradaxa. you got something to say about a proposed metro fare hike? there is an online survey open until february 11th and six public hearings between january 2090 and february 26th in d.c. and the maryland suburbs. metro wants to know how you feel about escalator maintenance, the signs and proposed fare hikes. a consumer alert about a popular child car seat. conbi usa is recalling more than 3,000 of its corker rosatis. the harnesses aren't -- row seats. the harnesses aren't as strong as they are supposed to be. there will be rereplacements next happening from one in a million to one in 100 million, in other word, almost never happens. 2,000-miles on his bike and this cyclist is just getting warmed up, but what could possibly motivate him to stay on the road until may? find out. >> then later they thought they'd be in school today. instead you can see them zooming down the hill with wild abandon with us big folks just wishing we were about 9 years old again. first we're heading down to the garage for a look at steps you can take over the weekend to make sure your car is ready when the weather turns bone ch updating tonight's top stories, the recovery is underway from that winter storm that hit 1/3 of the country. about 2,200 flights were canceled across the country as airlines were working to get their planes back where they need to be. just one of this weekend's three playoff games is scheduled indoors. the other three may not see temperatures above freezing and in green bay forecasters say it could be colder at game time than the historic ice bowl was back in 1967, talking about your frozen tundra and now that the snow is on the ground, well it, may be around for a while. today is cold, but next week may be even colder. we're going to hit the big chill. that's exactly why i'm down in our parking garage tonight. we want to make sure everyone is ready to hit the road in these icy conditions. so lon anderson from aaa joins us now to give us more information on what we can do to winterize our car starting with the tires. what can we do right now? >> the most important thing is to make sure you've got adequate tread and have either all winter radials or snow tires, but having the right tires on the road is probably the most important piece of safety equipment you can have because you're not going to keep traction on ice and snow if you don't have good tires. the next most important thing that you can do, when we're talking about temperatures close to 0 like we're talking about the next few days, making sure you have adequate antifreeze. if the fluids in your engine freeze, we're talking about thousands of dollars of repairs to the engine. just don't do it. antifreeze is cheap. make sure you've got plenty of antifreeze in there. >> reporter: there's also a survival kit we should keep in our car. >> absolutely. we kind of adhere to the boy scouts being prepared. so these are the things we recommend for motorists to consider having in their vehicles if they're really going to be prepared for bad weather. you would have been lost today i think if you hadn't had a brush and scraper to get that ice and snow off. similarly we recommend this is cat litter, nonclumping cat litter. it's just like sand. you do get stuck and you're sitting there spinning, throw this under the tire, just like sand, helps you get traction. similarly if you happen to be stuck and have a lot of snow around, having a little shovel like this can really make a difference. >> reporter: also batteries, that's really important because we're seeing a lot of cars stalled on the road now. >> absolutely. , so of course, jumper cables because batteries are the no. 1 reason for service calls now for aaa. very cold weather we respect you consider having some kind of blanket in the car. -- we recommend you consider having some kind of blanket in the car. if you have a power failure, that can help prevent hypothermia. we had a lot of ice out there today. so a can of deicer for the windshield can be good. that can also help with the locks, but there's also something you can get at the hardware store, car supply store, lock deicer. stick that in the lock and squirt some deep icer in there. profile locks are -- deeisner there. frozen locks are a big -- deicer in there. frozen locks are a big probable. the chemicals on the road -- problem. the chemicals on the road are a big problem. you'll probably need extra windshield washer. if you do get in trouble and slide off the road, it's important you have flares or something like this to alert other drivers so you don't end up being a victim, being hit by somebody else. so a few basic things now. the last thing we respect and we don'tism that you use it while you're driving -- don't recommend that you use it while you're driving, but a fully charged cell phone. if you do get in trouble, you've got to make a call. >> reporter: thanks for helping us winterize our car. derek, i've seen your car. i bet you have all these things minus the kitty litter. this is what you need, buddy, right here. >> you know what, jan? i could use some kitty litter and several of the other things you got there. i have jumper cables and scrapers, but i'm a little short on wiper fluid and other things. that rescue mission, the chinese icebreaker that went to rescue the 52 sciences and tourists from the russian research ship that was stuck in the ice since christmas eve got stuck, too. now the trip home has been altered because we don't know if the chinese boat can get out. but the cold weather is not keeping one u.s. veteran from making his way across the country, but the chill is far from his only challenge. >> i'm learning that america is a lot hillier than i was taught. >> reporter: by only the power of his backside. >> learning a lot about what i'm capable of. >> reporter: and his warrior heart. >> that i did the longest route i could possibly do in the hardest time of year of. >> reporter: rob jones rode into a full house at the american legion in the little town of chester, illinois, thursday night. it was one of his toughest rides so far. >> the wind was just in my face no matter which way i went. >> reporter: riding against the wind was worth it he said. >> most of them never made it back, a couple classmates. >> they came out, welcomed me in from the cold and i really appreciate it. >> reporter: he came here to tell his story and raise money for wounded veterans. he lost his legs in afghanistan. >> i was trying to find an idea at the time. >> reporter: his loss opened another window. he's the only veteran to attempt a 5,400-mile journey from coast to coast. >> it's pretty rare to see a double amputee riding an unmodified bicycle. >> reporter: he's almost halfway on his journey. >> thanks a lot, appreciate you coming out. >> reporter: people in chester and other people along the way keep him pedaling uphill. >> a lot of us who have legs cannot ride that far. rob is bicycling his way to san diego. he says he's hoping to get there by may. his trip began in a place called bar harbor, maine, and he has already raised nearly 65,000 bucks for several veterans charities. coming in minutes in the age of new and improved and far more sugary for seven decades this has been the one cereal you thought would never change. >> but first fun in the snow on a sunny freezing day. don't you wish you were 9? kids may not have had to go to class, but plenty of them made their way to the hills for sledding today. sky 9 was overhead for a while during the fun this morning. >> and then we sent our photojournalist out to hear from the folks on the ground down the road in silver spring. >> take a picture of us when we go down the big thingy, the hill, the hill, yeah, the hill. [ screams ] >> awesome! >> everybody is coming down at once and you're about to hit a girl or boy. >> ready to go down? >> i'm scared! [ screaming ] >> woo-hoo! >> ready, set, go! >> why do i have to carry the heavy sled all by myself when i trip up the hill? >> you got my gloves. go ahead. >> oh, look at this. >> that's cool. now the question. on the minds of millions, what did i ever do with my flexible flyer? do you remember the flexible flyer? >> i used a plastic garbage bag when i was a kid. that works even better because then you can go everywhere. sledding is a blast when you're a little kid, a big kid. it's fun. >> now you're a little older and snow days not always the best. our friends over at usa today compiled a list called why snow actually sucks once you're grown. no. 5, you really can't make a snow angel or snowman without being judged. >> no. 4 the other drivers on the road. >> no. 3, what about your kid out of school, you have to work? >> no. 2, you have to clear off your car, shovel the driveway and the sidewalk. no. 1 reason snow is no good, you don't actually get snow days. darn, if you're like us, where are we? >> we're at work. i like to add honorable mention is landmines when the snow melts when your pets -- >> oh. why did you bring that up? >> i have a dog. i have a reason. i'm just warning people to watch where they step after the snow is melted. coming up private messages intercepted on facebook with marketing messages. >> russ ptacek found some la [ male announcer ] this holiday season, you're getting all the best devices, which means you need the best network to support them. and once you've got 100% fiber optic verizon fios, you get it -- america's fastest, most reliable internet. i was streaming videos, movies, music. once i realized how fast it was, that's when i got it. >> she is a friend of a friend and she's a legitimate meteorologist. she knows her stuff. she knows blizzard conditions when she sees them. >> she put her whole body on the line there. >> absolutely. i feel terrible but better her than me. let's get to this weather because as bad as it is on cape cod, it's not nearly as bad here. we are still dealing with weather that is unexpected in d.c. let's look outside with the michael and son weather cam. we have a beautiful shot of the national harbor, but it looks much prettier than it feels with a temperature of 23 degrees and winds subsiding out of the north, northwest at 7 miles per hour, that dew point 1 degree which means it's really bone dry right now and that's going to allow us to just get bitterly cold overnight tonight. wind chills will be in the single digits and teens tomorrow morning as we head through the weekend getting milder but still slightly below average for this time of year by sunday and on sunday we're watching an area of rain showers approach. current temperature, very, very cold here. it's 21 in leesburg, 20 in martinsburg, 17 in hagerstown and you can bet that with that fresh snowpack and the diminishing winds, clear skies overnight tonight it is going to get very, very cold. satellite and radar shows the clear skies, a few clouds drifting from the nor and west heading further into the over-- north and west heading further into the overnight hours, lows between 7 in the suburbs, 15 downtown. those winds become southeasterly at 5 to 10 miles per hour. that southerly breeze tries to warm us up, but when you're starting out with such cold temperatures, it's a long haul. 0's and teens to begin. partly cloudy tomorrow morning, very cold and even with that southerly breeze it's going to try to melt some of the snow and that actually makes things a little bit cooler, a high of 30 to 38 tomorrow under those mostly sunny skies, south winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour. on sunday it does get a little milder with a high of 42, very cloudy, some showers arriving late in the day and that will cause black ice concerns on monday morning. so i might have to upgrade this to a yellow alert on monday, both for the black ice for that monday morning commute and for the really chilly winds that we'll have during the evening commute, a high of 35, but winds will bring in colder air during the afternoon and by the time we get to monday night our low temperature, 8 degrees and that will be in town. so it is going to be absolutely brutally cold early on tuesday morning, even dangerously cold, a high of only 20 degrees on tuesday. so it's the coldest air that we have seen here in about five years if we reach that high of 20 degrees and that's all we get to or if we get to highs in the teens and that's it, that would be about five years since it's been that cold. >> this weekend is kind of a warm-up for us. at 6:00 it could prove to be the swing vote in the virginia senate. we've got a preview of this month's special election in parts of loudoun and fairfax county. >> reporter: it happened again. a young child was abandoned in a cold snow covered car. i'm andrea mccarren. i'll have at 6. >> but first if you can't stop eating, you could be addicted to food, [ male announcer ] when your small business has the power and reliability of verizon fios, you're not just ready, you're "downloading huge files during the busiest part of the day" ready. you're "early morning conference call with a dozen participants" ready. you're "checking inventory and juggling online orders" ready. you're small business ready. so switch to verizon fios to get small businss ready, with 100% fiber optic fast internet and reliable phone with 99.9% network reliability. call now to get a firm price quote of your total monthly charges tforwo years from verizon. we put it in writing up front so there are no surprises. take the guesswork out of switching and call 1.888.410.4404 now. get 100% fiber optic fast internet and reliable phone for just $99.99 ath mon with a two year price guarantee. plus get an additional phone line included. that's 1.888.410.4404 to get internet and phone for just $99.99 a month. 100% fiber optic speed and reliability that makes you small business ready. that's powerful. you've heard of people addicted to drugs, alcohol, gambling and perhaps sex. now there's more and more evidence you can be addicted to food. >> bigad shaban introduces us to a woman who has been struggling with food addiction her entire life. >> reporter: 33-year-old hillary buckhold said her lifelong battle with overeating left her obese at just 11 years old. how much did you weigh at your heaviest?
