an internal investigation at the alexandria police department has concluded the officers didn't do anything wrong when they killed a man this past february. >> this happened two blocks from police headquarters when ten officers answered a call for a domestic dispute. peggy fox reports, the man's mother was there and she did not think police were justified in using lethal force. >> when they saw the shooting i was there and i know what i saw. >> reporter: vicky sellers watched as seven alexandria police officers opened fire and killed her son. 30-year-old t aft sellers a former marine legally carried a gun but he didn't fire on february 18th when officers opened up hitting him five times with 37 rounds. >> he continued to shoot him as he walked in front of him. even with him laying down and the gun not in his hand. >> reporter: vicky sellers questions why officers opened fire in the first place. today police chief cook said their own internal investigation found officers fired in self-defense. >> only at the point that mr. sellers pointed his gun at one of my officers did the rest of the officers fire their weapons. >> reporter: cook says for at least eight minutes his officers tried to get sellers to put his gun down. >> telling him that we were there to help him. telling him he doesn't have to do anything. please show your hands. >> reporter: he says cell phone videos recorded by people across at this mcdonald's show sellers pointed his gun at the officers but vicky sellers who was there and has seen the videos only saw taft point his gun down. >> he heard me. at that point, his -- he was like this. >> reporter: she believes the shooting started when one officer began firing because she thought taft fired first which he did not. the police department says it doesn't matter if a police officer fired because she thought she heard taft sellers firing first. the police chief says as soon as taft sellers pointed his gun at the officers they were justified to use lethal force. but the chief won't release the video so we can't verify whether taft sellers pointed his gun or not. >> the video is part of the criminal investigation. >> reporter: the chief says he would consider my request to let reporters view the video in order to see for ourselves whether sellers pointed a gun or not. in alexandria, peggy fox, wusa9. >> people are getting shocked and then ripped off in northwest d.c.. police say someone is using a taser to stun victims before they rob them. the robberies all have been on n. street between 9th and 13th. the tasers were used in two of the incidents, all three victims are hispanics. police only have vague descriptions of the suspects right now. friends and family paid last respects to kenny diaz. police arrested four more people in connection to his death and that brings the total number of suspects to 12. but investigators do not thinks this gang related despite the large number of suspects in the case. police think diaz was killed after some of his friend confronted another group about a robbery. the montana high school teacher at the center of a notorious rape case was released from prison yesterday. 54-year-old stacey ramold completed a 30 day sentence for an attack on a 14-year-old student. the girl later killed herself. the judge in the case later came under fire. rambold must register as a sex offender. a maryland based group has been granted a permit to hold an event at gettysburg national military park. park officials say the kkk organization has the right to exercise their first amendment. even if their views are unpopular. the group held a membership rally earlier this month at the scene of a civil war clash. the gettysburg event is schedules for october 5th. it's a done deal. virginia based smith field foods is now owned by a firm in china. the sale was completed yesterday and now all the decisions will be made from bosses in the far east from now on. it's the largest takeover of a u.s. company by a china firm. frederick community college is back open this morning after the campus was evacuated last night. investigators tell us a suspicious item was left in the cafeteria. but after the bomb squad was called in, the package was deemed safe. virginia's out. maryland's in. that's the verdict from the editors at "playboy" magazine with this year's ranking of the top party schools in the u.s.. uva topped the list last year but this year it didn't crack the top ten. >> this time top honors went to west virginia university. university of wisconsin, university of colorado, usc and florida state round out the top five. the university of maryland is ranked tenth. they are based on data from the national center for education statistics. the ncaa, market. the number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to a six year low. and of course that's evidence fewer companies are laying off workers right now. checking out the numbers -- two brothers under arrest named in one of the nation's deadliest outbreaks of foodborne illness in 25 years. eric and ryan jensen owned jensen's cantaloupe farm in colorado. they're accused of selling contaminated melons that led to a 2011 listeria epidemic. it killed 33 people. jensen farms has since gone bankrupt. facebook stock owners are laughing at everyone who jumped ship. laughing all the way to the bank. the social media giant's stock topped $50 a share for the first time yesterday. it's now up 88% this year. the company went public at $38 a share last may only to see its stock fall when its ipo suffered technical difficulties as the nasdaq and for other reasons. facebook stock now 32% above the ipo price thanks to success in selling ads on mobile devices. nike got a boost on sexual street. shares -- wall street. shares jumped to $75 a share. that's an all time high. the reason why? big demand in the u.s. and europe and that's helping net income rise 38% in the fiscal first quarter. and buy some shoes for that sort of. in the meantime a piece of history still lives on in parts of western maryland. after the break we'll take a look at a historic landmark i think mostly cloudy and 62 by 8:00. more sun by noon 70 and actual forecasted high today is 75. yesterday a glorious 77 degrees. storms yesterday morning brought some clouds. that's now snuck out into the atlantic but look at the northeasterly push of the clouds -- the winds here pushing to the southwest. you can see the clouds in pennsylvania now advancing on top of us. so we're getting into the clouds here. under the clouds look at that 60 this morning. in philly. remember the clouds are here it's a little milderment away from the clouds and we dip into the 40s and 50s and also seeing that locally with 47 for martinsburg and winchester. 46 along with cumberland. but under the clouds gaithersburg in the mid 50s and 63 in annapolis. they also get the heat off the bay. it's 54 in culpeper. and fredericksburg 53. by the way warrenton, has been reporting some fog this morning below a mile. visibilities are great here in d.c. on our michael & son weather camera monument scaffolding all lit up. 59 mostly cloudy. north winds at 6 and humidity at 83%. what we're going to watch are these clouds continuing to move to the south and the west here. partly to mostly cloudy in spots. even through lunchtime. but more sun expected this afternoon. i'm not even sure we're going to see a shower but up against some of the east facing ridges, if you have a little drizzle wouldn't surprise me. generally i think that's overdone. a couple of showers offshore. tonight we continue with the northeasterly winds so back in the 50s perhaps on isolated spot or two in the upper 40s. tomorrow not much change at all in this pattern. sunshine and even on sunday, we're looking pretty good around here. by sunday temperatures again in the mid 70s. so not much change. 70 on the bay. but you get away from it easton 7 this afternoon. 72 in hagerstown and westminster. over toward andrews at 73. and in luray today a high of 75. here's your forecast. breaking it down, next three days 75 today. another great afternoon. 58 tonight. closer the 50 if not the upper 40s in the outer suburbs. tomorrow 75 beautiful again. sunday beautiful 75. now next week a slight hiccup in the into rockville and down into bethesda. let's take a live look at the american legion bridge. west side of town very very quiet across the river here. whether you're heading north toward bethesda or southbound toward tysons corner. you're going to be okay. let's go back over to the maps and this time heading tall way to the south side of town. lanes are open on 95 dale city, wood spring springfield. 395 to the 14th street bridge leaving edsall road. live look outside and in springfield still looking very quiet. both main and hov lanes everything is open. back to you guys. this week newly declassified documents reveals a hydrogen bomb nearly detonated in 1961 in a crash over north carolina. then one of our photojournalists dug up another scary story from the depths of his memory. >> western maryland the height of the cold war a b-52 crashes in a blizzard with two nukes on board. bruce leshan and our photographer greg guise revisit a huge story that just a few of us remember. >> reporter: amazing thing. here at the crash site. almost half a century later. if you move a little earth around, you can still smell the jet fuel. >> wow. >> full of flames, this thing -- >> that's one of the mainlanding gear. >> reporter: you don't even have to dig for pieces. >> they barryed most of i -- buried most of it. >> reporter: the air force left most of the wreckage in frank's cattle field. >> it's still stamped with the boeing stamp of manufacture. this is a hydraulic hack watcher. >> reporter: security forces fulled out the two nuclear weapons. >> they were recovered right over there. >> reporter: the body of the bombardier major robert townley who couldn't bail out of the plane. >> he was in the seat when incident occurred and the aircraft started to tumble and roll and it started flying upside down and he was just not able to get back into that seat so that he could eject himself out. >> reporter: flight buzz 19 was returning to georgia after a nuclear alert mission over europe. when it ran into a huge blizzard over western maryland. the turbulence sheared off the vertical fin and left the crew bailing out in the storm. the pilot and the copilot survived and two others died of exposure. >> one boy taking a shortcut home found him unfortunately. he had already died. >> reporter: steve johnson still remembers as a 10-year- old when the air force brought the bombs off the mountain. >> i remember asking my dad. i said you know dad -- he said yeah that's the bomb son because they had the explosives label on the back. >> put thick mattresses on the bottom. >> reporter: on a flatbed truck. >> on a truck and the bombs on top. >> reporter: strapped them down and drove them out of here. >> three crashes, 14 deaths over three years, all of them caused by the same weak bulkhead in the tail of the massive b-52. >> remember we were at war. >> reporter: this marked a turning point. a few years later the b-52s were taken off 24 hour airborne alert and they were redesigned so that their airframes were not so prone to catastrophic failure. in garrett county, maryland, bruce leshan, wusa9. >> now the nukes in north carolina were one failed safety measure from actually being detonated. the bombs in maryland on the other hand were neither armed or ready. steve johnson says the worst that could have happened is that the fire after the crash would have set off the explosives and then sent radioactive materials spewing across the country side. luckily strategic air command secured the weapons and they were still exact when they took them off the -- intact when they took them off the mountainside. more parents are reacting. more kids than ever were vaccinated against the flu last year. but health officials say there's plenty of room for improvement. the centers for disease control says nearly 57% of children got the nasal flu shot or the flu shot traditionally. a big boost from previous years. flu vaccine is recommended for nearly everyone 6 months and older. some antidepressants may be able to help patients with a dangerous form of lung cancer. stanford researchers used high- tech computer models to search for improved drugs that might treat small cell lung cancer. surprisingly the program picked the older class of antidepressants and in lab tests it was actually age to kill -- able to kill cancer cells. they are now planning to test the drugs on people. another reason to feel a little bit more comfortable with your doctor. british researchers say hip replacement surgery is getting safer. the percentage of deaths in the first three months after surgery has been cut in half since 2003. doctors say some new surgical techniques are the reason why. it is just about 4:54. happy friday morning if you're just waking on the northeasterly flow with temperatures by mid-morning jumping in toward the mid 60s and still mid 50s north. by lunchtime some areas of clouds and some areas of fun and look at the stray spots of green you're seeing there. yeah could wee see the isolated shower today even though temperatures will get up into the 75-degree range for a high in most of the time it's going to be dry? but you know what an isolated passing sprinkle is a slim possibility today. monika? northbound side of i-95. things are looking great here in springfield. very light volumes it's friday morning light everyone. and
