let's find out from the man who knows, first alert meteorologist howard bernstein. >> it looks like the week starts off dry and then the second half of the week into next weekend looks kind of unsettled. unsettled tonight, big storm still spinning in the northeast. we've had some persistent light showers for the most part, fewer now than a few hours ago and you can see everything moving off toward the east, southeast. locally about the heaviest thing i'm looking at is coming in here towards stafford county on the north part of the county, quantico seeing a few sprinkles there. this guy is going to past north of garrisonville probably over on i-95 the next 10 minutes or so and then in towards charles county, generally the southern part of charles county. we're also looking at light showers near newland the river in toward southern st. mary's county and one or two stragglers into west virginia south of hancock, a couple sprinkles in the next few hours. one thing about the breeze and clouds, they're keeping temperatures up at the moment, right now 57 in town, 40s in haymarket and garrisonville upper 40s with 55 in andrews, 53 in rockville, but i expect lows to drop into the 40s and maybe a few upper 30s near the shenandoah valley tomorrow morning. tomorrow futurecast, sunny, breezy, cool, 50s by lunchtime with highs in the low, maybe mid-60s, looks like tuesday just add a few degrees to this. the second half of the week looks unsettled. be back in a few minutes more to discuss that seven-day forecast. >> thank you, howard. a lot of us have been told not to swim in the potomac, but is that always the case? stay away from the potomac no matter what. with steaming scorching summer days around the corner we can only hope we wanted to investigate if you're putting your health at risk if you decide to dive in. wusa9's mike valerio has the story. >> reporter: it's about that time of year ago when people are ready to take the plunge into the potomac, but just how clean is the water here in the nation's capital? tonight we separate fact from fiction so you're ready for your next trip to the river. it seems like a murky mess below the surface, not exactly the crystal clearwaters of jamaica or aruba. it is tempting to dive in when temperatures soar. to talk about whether going for a swim makes you a goner, we talked to the potomac river keeper network. on a perfect summer day is it safe to swim in the potomac? what say you? >> yes. it's definitely safe to swim in the potomac on a perfect summer day if it hasn't rained very much the last few days beforehand. absolutely. >> reporter: of course, right now it has rained. so the benchmark is to wait for three days of runoff, debris and bacteria will then have time to recede, but if you go in after waiting for that long, can you stay in for a while? >> you'll be fine if you're in the river for a few minutes or if you're in there an hour or couple of hours if you're paddle boarding or kayaking. >> reporter: part of the there's no effective citywide system that tells us if it's safe to swim. there's just this light which may be broken. so this warning light system is d.c.'s effort at trying to notify the public when there's raw assuming being dumped into the potomac river. it's supposed to flash when rain mixes with sewage, but nothing at the moment. so what would you say to all the people who would tell everyone here don't ever go in the river even on a beautiful summer day? what would you say to those people? >> i think unfortunately they have an image of the potomac river that came from our history which is it used to be extremely polluted and no one wanted to go near it for decades, but we've had 40 years of the clean water act and epa working to clean up the rivers. the potomac river keeper has been around 15 years working to clean up the potomac and the water quality has gotten a lot better. >> reporter: a refreshing change as we start the season of our return to the river. in washington mike valerio, wusa9. >> so phillip added if and let's say you have a band- aid or something, use plenty of soap to clean off any bacteria after your swim. i think mike picked the right word, murky, when he put that camera in the water. that was murky. >> we had 1 1/2, 2 inches of rain on friday, so winchester, for example, had over 2 1/2 inches of rain. you get that runoff in the potomac, it takes a few days to flush itself through. let's do a little business, 3-degree guarantee, a forecast high temperature today of 64 degrees. a little sunshine popped us to 55, but i'll take that any day of the week. tomorrow i'm forecasting a high of 64 for a 3-degree guarantee. let's show you what's happening with satellite and radar. we looked at doppler a few minutes ago. we had a lot of clouds this evening. so while the moon and jupiter were kind of neat, they were very close to the sky, might not have seen it. you'll have another chance tomorrow. not quite as close and this little guy there is the star spika. the moon and jupiter will still be a cool picture, tomorrow in the southeast sky, 10:00 the depiction of that view, but obviously you'll see it in the evening. temps still in the 50s in the metro, 40s in westminster. shenandoah valley mid-40s from front royal to luray with 30s in the mountains. . our weather headlines this sunday night 30s and 40s tonight and monday night, but tomorrow looks actually more concerned about the threat of frost north and west of town. we'll have a cool dry start to the week with the threat of showers returning i think by thursday into the weekend coming up and a lot of things are going on this coming weekend. middle of the country nice and toasty, tomorrow 80s in kansas city, st. louis, little rock and dallas. what's going on if you haven't been with me all weekend, been talking about the omega block, the greek letter omega with the dip in the west and east. we call this a block because when you get this sort of setup, systems move very slowly because that setup is persistent. here's an example of a slow moving system. this is the same storm that brought us the rain friday and cool and unsettled weekend, bringing some snow to parts of canada, northern new york state, even snowshoe, west virginia, and parts of the smokies with snow over the weekend. we'll get rid of the sprinkles quickly and be in good shape monday and tuesday as well. for tonight any showers around will taper off. we'll see some skies clearing, unseasonably cold, mid-30s to the morning with a breeze, so some wind chills in the 30s. then in the afternoon breezy and unseasonably cool but sunny, 59 to 64. tuesday and wednesday, that's not bad. mow your lawn the first half of the week but after wednesday all bets are off, showers around and hopefully not too wet, but we'll have to watch the models carefully because into saturday now not looking pretty at all. >> perfect day for a lemonade stand, though, right?
