It was billed as nonpartisan but carried a political message. Reporter thousands hit the National Mall today in support for science. Were marching today to remind people everywhere, our lawmakers especially, of the significance of science for health and prosperity. Reporter the march for science carried that message to hundreds of cities around the world saturday. In sydney, australia protesters carried for science and scientists. In london marchers called on governments to do more. Organizers call the event nonpartisan but many marchers around the country said they were motivated by what they described as antiscience policies from President Trump. People in power, trump, in america are denying science. Its everything he says. He doesnt believe in climate change. He doesnt realize how perilous it is for future generations. Reporter they urged and celebrated government action. Its important to me to see science is supported, and in addition to send a message we need funding. To cut funding for any Scientific Agency is a horrible mistake. Reporter President Trump made no mention of the science march in a tweet about earth day, but wrote hes committed to preserving the Natural Beauty of our nation. Not everyone was onboard with the nonpartisan theme. Many marchers and speakers accused the white house of ignoring sci thousands of people marching for science on the National Mall was betsy sonnemann, the 90yearold physicist marched to stop science funding cuts. Shes a grandmother and part of three generations of scientists in her family. Great that they even hired us. A woman scientist sent me to a convention where there were 500 men and me. If they cut off anymore, im going to be extremely upset. Even though im 90 years old. Ill still walk and fight for it. Sonnemann says shell keep fighting till the day she dies, at least for the next decade or so. On this earth day more than 2,000 people volunteered to clean up 30 sites in maryland and dc along the anacostia water shed. Volunteers took part in the annual earth day cleanup. Their goal, to rid the river of bottles, cans, and other junk so everyone can enjoyan this is really spiritual for me. I love clean water. Were smarter than this. We can get this cleaned up. If you notice, a lot of it is plastic bottles and beverage containers. This is so much fun. I wish i could do this every day. Im able to give back and do something im having fun doing. Being able to have our prom in a school instead of a hotel allowed us to save so much money. Things were donated generously from people of the community. It makes it easier for us to raise more money than any other location. Why pediatric cancer . We actually had two kids at our pediatric cancer. Its very important for us as a school to raise money. Its such an Amazing Organization and we knew if we were able to raise money for that organization, it would be an amazing cause. As a school we knew we had to do something about it. Its something that touches everybody. Yes, sir. Im joined by former patient of st. Jude, emily. Tell us about your story. When i was 2 years old i was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Now im completely healthy and thats because of st. Jude and what they did for me. Theyre amazing and they treat every kid with so much care and gave everybody hope. Youre actually a sophomore at ruchmind but you traveled in for this event. Why does it mean so much to you . I like the fact its kids my age raising awareness for st. Jude and a place that has such a big impact on me and such a happy place for me. Thank you, emily. This is a wider movement. This school spearheaded it. These three brought squeals of happiness to sick kids at Childrens Hospital in philadelphia. It turns out these window washers dress up once a year. In the past theyve surprised children as ninja turtles, spiderman, captain america. They say it makes the kids forget theyre sick for just a little while. Its prom time. Sadly there are many kids who dont get to go to prom including kids with intellectual and physical disabilities. Dreams for kids dc made the dream of prom come true for about 40 kids with disabilities. They held their third annual prom at the Jewish Community center. They had a balloon artist, photobooth, and as you can see right there, a dance floor and lots of music. This next story shows you the power of the internet and the power of one sweet little girl.
