Yellow weather alert for the overnight into the early part of the tuesday commute. Still dealing with some rain. You can see some of this activity coming out of ohio and kentucky into west virginia. Were going to see a few showers and storms overnight. Around here, not much going on in the metro at the moment. Although weve got a little bit of drizzle and low clouds. The immediate metro, light sprinkles. Look at this big blob showing up from german town to gaithersburg. If this thing develops a little lightning, it wouldnt surprise me. And its booking east, toward 370 north of the icc. Moving east as i said at 40 miles per hour, so gaithersburg, damascus in just a few minutes. Dayton and Howard County, about little bit of lightning. We got temperatures now from 6 the 74. Theyre not going to drop much overnight and get ready, because its going to get hot quickly. Ill be being ba in a few minutes to tell you about this coming heat wave. Thanks, howard. They say the show must go on and tonight it did. All the rain did not stop the big fireworks extravaganza on the national lawn. Had ellison barber join us live. Just a few extra umbrellas down there . Reporter the crowd spent most of the day huddled under umbrellas waiting, watching and hoping the Fireworks Show would go on tonight and it did, right on time at 9 09. We waited in the food court until the rain stopped and came in the last minute. It was perfect. It was foggy so you couldnt see like the whole thing but it was still a gre s fireworks, thats all anyone needed to make all of todays rain seem worth it. No matter the age what did you think about the fireworks . It was amazing. And i been here for a like a long time. Reporter every one here said the same thing. Awesome it was awesome reporter there was a bit of cloud cover that made those fireworks difficult to see at times and that cloud cover was absolutely because of the rain we saw all day. If you were wondering could the pyro techs have done something with the fireworks to make them more visible, the answer is no. A spokesperson with the National Parks service tells me those fireworks were all locked in and ready to go before the weekend even started, so they did the best they could with a little bit of inclement weather. Reporting live on the national mall, im 9. Security is extra tonight. Mola, did people seem more concerned than usual . Reporter i wouldnt go as far as to say they were frightened. You know, frankly, if they were frightened no one would have been out here. They were cautious. They were aware and as you mentioned, there was the one scare but the heightened security, seemed to prove effective. Before the fireworks consumed the air space around the national mall, security did. Authorities up there in choppers. They were also down here in humvees and cruisers and on bikes and on foot. It was like you can feel the presence, you can see them and theres not one block you go by where its not obvious. Reporter around 7 30, someone reported something restroom here the washington monument. Authorities cleared the area, taped it off and went in. We were able to determine it was not a threat and reopened the area without very much impact to anyone. Reporter thats what you found . Yes, its a meedo meter. Reporter heightened threats mean heightened security. It worries me, a little bit. Reporter because of where you are or the day or the year . Both. Anything can happen anywhere, so theres no point in worrying about it. Reporter these guys help. Not just in investigating and responding but providing peace of mind. D. C. Police officers and firefighters, bombsniffing dogs and the f. B. I. And not to mention all the security you dont see. The security makes me feel better. The security is fantastic. Theres police everywhere. Couldnt feel safer. Reporter of course, safety is as important to the show as the show itself. Couldnt ask for more to be here on the 4th. Reporter in case you didnt hear what was found in that portable bathroom, it was a meedometer. It proved not to be a threat. One more thing we heard out here tonight that we constantly hear when we do those stories, that its important to come out here. Folks say its important to continue to do this and to continue to live their lives unchanged in the face of possible terror. Live out here on the national mall, im mola lenghi for wusa 9. Because of todays rain, the white house canceled the 4th of july barbecue on the south lawn. But that did not stop the party completely. The president invited as many people as possible to fill the east room and gave a shout out to the men and women in uniform. Our freedoms are dependent on an incrle women in uniform and their families who look out for us every single day. Despite the drizzle and clouds, people were out all over d. C. And Northern Virginia to catch the Fireworks Show on the mall. Look at this picture here. I was out on the key bridge where there were easily a couple thousand people there crammed on the sidewalk. This is the east side of the bridge. They were filled up on the west side as well watching the Fireworks Show. Heres from eric adams, who probably got the best picture ive seen on twitter so far tonight, the fireworks with a healthy dose of clouds. This from a gross girl that turned out to be a great pic, the pink lighting up the sky. This one looks, well, a little more like beirut in the 80s. D v engine d. C. Fireworks doing the invisible route. Youll notice there in that picture, how clear it looks. And this is where things took a turn tonight. Instead of rain and clouds being the villain on the 4th of july, people started taking their anger on twitter and putting it toward pbs. What they did essentially here was show a combination of the best fireworks from this year and previous years in their Television Coverage but didnt exactly explain that on camera, on tv, at the time. They said it was the patriotic thing to do. As you can imagine, the twitter verse disagreed. One called it the Milly Vanilly of fireworks. Only in d. C. Could a pbs show become a scandal. Arthur said, haters gonna. It was a tough call. Are i think you made the right choice. Maybe be more up front next time. Interesting words from folks about pbs. Several local communities have had to reschedule their fireworks because of the weather. College park postponed their show until tomorrow. Gaithersburg moved its show to friday and some other communities have not yet released the dates for their rescheduled events, so this will be a great time to download the wusa 9 app and that way when we know, youll know. To Prince Georges County tonight where police are investigating a shooting at of all places a parking lot full of ice cream trucks. This happened along buchanan treat in edmiston. Edminston. [ audio difficulties ] police in new 18yearold connor golden and two other graduates of Oakton High School were climbing on some rocks yesterday in central park. Golden stepped on some kind of an explosive and the device exploded. The injury was so severe doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee. We talked with his grandfather today. Hell be okay. Hes got the affirmtation, though, hes amputation, though, hes got some recovery to do, so thats going to take a while. Police believe that explosive was homemade. They are still working to find out who made it and who placed it in central park. Tracking metro and today, of course is a holiday. Tomorrow will be anything but for many commuters in Northern Virginia. You can blame it on phase 3 of metros safety surge. Starting tomorrow night at 8 00, metro will not run any trains between the braddock for seven days. Metro will provide free shuttle busses between those two stations but they recommend you consider alternate travel arrangements. Live by the tweet, die by the tweet. So when Something Like this pops up, it probably was just general campaign incompetence but it sticks because its another in the chain. Reporter in february, trump weathered a similar scandal. I know nothing about david duke. I know nothing with white supremists. Reporter presumptive nominee trump may face a similar abandonment when Congress Returns tomorrow. Hes doubling down on it and forcing every elected republican official to answer for it. Everything he does, other candidates will be asked about. And i dont think hes going to find any support in his explanation of the piece you saw the cleaned up picture of the tweet with a circle. Trumps campaign has assert edits a sheriffs star.
