left the u.s. district courthouse today in silence, free for now but with a long list of restrictions and conditions ordered by the court, no flying, no d.c. and no leaving his tampa home once he gets back the judge told hughes still dressed in his postal service uniform. the court read two charges, one for flying an unlicensed aircraft and another for violating restricted airspace. >> this is not good, people. >> reporter: meanwhile investigators continued to puzzle over how hughes evaded radar and other defenses flying at rooftop level for nearly 100 miles to reach the capitol. investigators gave no official update on their progress today, but former secret service agent dan bongino said there must have been a failure in detection, communication or both. >> i find it really hard to believe the secret service had any specificity of this plan and did nothing. that to me seems not only unlikely, but impossible. >> reporter: the tampa bay times reporter who profiled hughes before the flight began defended his decision not to warn authorities about hughes for exactly that reason. hughes had already told them. >> he had been visited twice by the secret service, sounded like he was on their radar. it's not my job as a journalist to call the police on people. >> reporter: now as hughes returns home to florida, those charged with protecting the capitol and white house will have to contend with the weaknesses he expose. as far as we're able to tell, that video of hughes walking out of the courtroom today was the last time anyone saw him in d.c. he's due in tampa monday morning for a court appearance there. our affiliate checked with his wife tonight. she has not seen or heard from him so far. garrett haake, wusa9. >> hughes will be back in d.c. for his next court appearance on may 8th. then there's the trouble with folks jumping the white house fence. the bel air man accused of making that leap last october. he's due back in court tomorrow morning. a few days after his arrest he screamed at the judge and he had to left the courtroom. he's undergone more psychological evaluation and today there was a measure to shore up security at the white house. our partners at the washington post report that preliminary plan calls for adding steel spikes to the top of the fence. caught on camera, a thief who swiped a little boy's wheelchair. this is surveillance video that shows the lousy thief pushing the empty wheelchair across the parking lot late sunday night or early monday morning from an apartment building lobby in langley park on merrimac drive. that chair belongs to a 4-year- old boy named joshua. his mom left the chair there while she carried him up to their apartment. some area drivers owe tens of thousands of dollars in toll fine according to the firm that manages the 495 and i-95 express lanes, but those drivers are calling foul saying transurban fares are unfair and illegal and have filed a class action lawsuit in federal court. our mola lenghi is live in fairfax county. >> reporter: the main goal of this lawsuit is to stop what these plaintiffs describe as the outrageous overcharging of these unpaid tolls. what began as a $14.20 fee for an unpaid 495 h.o.t. lane toll quickly got out of hand for lisa marie commerce. she blames transurban, the company who runs 495 and i-95. >> i got a final notice which apparently was three months later saying that i owed hundreds of dollars because i had ignored the first two notices. i never got those notices. >> reporter: commerce said she fought over a year, all the fines her fines ballooning from a few hundred dollars to $10,000. >> oh, i'm devastated. i'm angry. i'm a single mom. >> reporter: now she's fighting transurban in court. she plans on joining a class action lawsuit against the company filed this week in federal court. >> i am not alone. >> reporter: retired judge walter kelly is part of a team representing the plaintiffs against transurban. >> goal no. 1 is to stop it. the second thing is to try to get some recompense for those people buffaloed into paying those things. >> reporter: wusa9 has spoken to other drivers who owe $26,000 or $30,000. >> we have not found any rhyme or reason for the way they charge. >> reporter: the company has the right to impose reasonable administrative fees related to costs and the right to civil penalties but not to assess their own. transurban said, "our toll practices meet the requirements of the code. transurban cannot and does not profit from our enforcement program and civil penalties." commerce isn't buying or paying. >> it has to stop. >> reporter: the attorneys tell me this trial will be on a rocket docket meaning it won't linger on for years and years. they expect it to wrap up and have a decision within about nine months. live in fairfax county i'm mola lenghi for wusa9. >> late last year transurban created the first time forgiveness program with unpaid tolls. that caps those penalties at $2,200. you better prepare yourself for some showers tonight and into tomorrow. >> first alert meteorologist howard bernstein is tracking some activity on the old doppler 9000. >> earlier today we had showers approach, hit dry air and fell apart. this stuff is reaching the ground in fairfax, montgomery, certainly out to our west and southwest and west of 270 and fairfax county and d.c. starting to see a couple light showers moving in. south of warrenton you see some of this activity. south and west of culpeper, moderate showers are tracking northeast. they'll be toward gold vein just after 11:30, quantico just after midnight. northern loudoun county and northern shenandoah county and move across frederick and washington county in toward carroll county, so even westminster is looking at where police are trying to piece together what went horribly wrong inside a home where five people were killed. officers found bodies of three men and two women after an hour's long barricade. one woman who got out told police it was a family dispute that went horribly wrong. officers are not looking for suspects. more breaking news in los angeles where a manhunt for a killer is underway. the police department went on a citywide tactical alert after several shootings within blocks of one another in a quiet neighborhood called the palms. at least one person is dead. four others have been injured. police are looking for a man driving an suv, but now it's not clear y>7mhow those shootings could be related. metro says it's working on a plan to either repair or replace that pedestrian bridge that a piece of heavy equipment accidentally knocked down onto the tracks yesterday right they're the greenbelt station. >> it's not clear who was at fault or who ill with pay, metro or a contractor working with an outfit called skanska. meantime folks in burlington heights who use that pedestrian bridge tell us they'd like to see it fixed soon. it's been less than a day and a half and neighbors say they already miss it. >> ride my bike over it, walk over it. >> even my dog uses it. my dog run away from home, he'd run across that bridge and go up and play in that lake. >> the good news is the mess made by the accident has been cleared from the tracks and the green line is operating as usual. when helen newsom's boyfriend broke up with her, she got back at him by trying to kill his 8-year-old son. tomorrow newsom will be sentenced for the crime. prince george's county prosecutors say they'll get at least 30 years behind bars. in 2013 she broke into that ex- boyfriend's home, waited until left and then tried to suffocate the little boy using a pillow. he broke free. so she grabbed a dumbbell, cracked him on the back of the head with it. again the little boy got away and ran to a neighbor's house and called the cops. newsom later pled guilty to attempted murder. the fairfax county police officer arrested on child pornography charges will have a bond hearing tomorrow. william bud walker remains in jail after a brief court appearance today. investigators got a tip alleging child porn had been uploaded in fairfax county. detectives say that upload came from the home owned by walker. more questions about the qualifications of a tulsa reserve deputy, 73-year-old robert bates mistakenly killed 44-year-old eric harris when he fired his personal gun instead of his taser. cbs news obtained training record. the documents show he had over 400 hours of law enforcement training. some sources told cbs news today some of those documents could have been falsified and claim at least three officers were pressured by their supervisors to show bates receive training he had not taken. a sheriff's office spokesman had no comment saying they do not respond to rumors. bates is expected to be arraigned on second degree manslaughter charges next week. a murder suspect who started dropping f bombs at a judge got himself yanked out of the courtroom and fast by half a dozen deputies. look at what happened as the judge was trying to explain to dennis stancil he could face a death ted. >> i knew in my mind i could get life, death penalty. if you [ bleep ] i will kill monday. he said the victim was a sexual predator who planned to molest his teenage brother, but investigators say they have no record of any complaints ever filed against the victim. coming up a culpeper moving east, northeast, so fredericksburg, rain should pick up around 11:52, manassas just before 12:30 and another batch of light to moderate rain from northern loudoun into frederick county moving east, northeast. emmetsburg 11:39 and westminster just after midnight before the rain gets steadier. bus stop temperatures in friday morning, a few showers in the morning, a break, a few afternoon showers, maybe even a thunderstorm, low to mid-70s tomorrow. saturday is great for outdoor activities. sunday will be cooler with a late shower possible. with all this activity going on in the rockies, snow there, storms in plains, heavy rains on the gulf coast. our futurecast shows the showers by morning really up towards philly. so we might not see too much activity in the morning, but during the day some sun, low to mid-70s, going 75 tomorrow on the 3-degree guarantee. by mid to late afternoon notice the showers pop in here. we could have thunder as well before we clear out tomorrow night. looking at the forecast, we've got a temperature expected 75 tomorrow, 79 on saturday. it will be a great day for any outdoor activity saturday, sunday 68, increasing clouds. an onshore flow means a late shower possible. next week sunday night and monday looks wet. we've got the nats game saturday, what a great day for baseball. then we're looking pretty good here tuesday and
