after tropical storm iselle went through. >> hello, i'm bruce johnson, thanks for joining us. u.s. planes were back in action above iraq today. they were conducting air strikes on islamic militants and dropping more humanitarian supplies. president obama is putting no timetable on u.s. military's renewed involvement in iraq. >> the u.s. military announced saturday night that war planes conducted four more air strikes against islamic militants. earl earlier in the day, they made a secondary droft to thousands of iraqis who are trapped in the mountains of northern iraq by the militants known as isis and isil. kurdish television showed kurdish forces delivering aid to the kurds. their members of a religious minority group under attack by the extremists. a small number of the refugees were able to scramble aboard the plane as it took off. some cried, overwelmed by their ordeal. >> we feel confident that we can prevent isil from going up a mountain and slaughtering the people who are there. >> the president also said an international effort is underway to figure out how to rescue the thousands of stranded kurds. the u.s. launched air strikes on friday against the insurgents near the iraqi, kurdish capital. >> i don't think we're going to solve this problem in weeks. if that's what you mean. i think this is going to take some time. >> a long-term project, but has promised that combat troops won't join the fight. wendy for cbs news. >> the president said there are no plans to close the u.s. embassy in baghdad or the consulate. president obama -- what demonstrators outside the white house wanted to hear today. stephanie ramirez continues our coverage from la fayette square. >> reporter: she wants help for the people. we need help. we need immediate help. people are stranded in the mountains. we need assistance as soon as possible. obama has done something, we need more. >> stop this genocide. >> reporter: this is the demonstration that took place outside the white house today. many kurdish americans pleading for continued u.s. support, even after this week's air strikes and air drops. >> i thank the united states helping the kurds and i thank obama administration, but we need more than that. >> those demonstrating say the minority groups in iraq are against a terrorist group they cannot defeat alone. isis, who has been making big advances in iraq over the last few months. taking over cities and using the weapons to fight iraqi christians, nonmuslims. >> it's not just a threat to the kurds and iraq, but the whole middle east and eventually the whole world >> reporter: this is the second protest to happen this week, begging for the president to help. the difference today, the president was also at the white house and addressed the possibility of more support through air strikes and not u.s. troops on the ground. >> american aircraft are positioned to strike isil terrorists around the mountain, to break the siege and rescue those who are trapped there. >> those here welcome more air strikes. any military support will help stop this. stephanie ramirez, wusa9 news. a growing number of voices are calling for the u.s. to begin openly arming the kurds to fight those militants. u.s. officials have long insisted they can only sell arms to the iraqi government in baghdad. even after the iraqi prime minister broke a promise to deliver some of those arms to the kurds. got a big road project that can drive commuters crazy in northern virginia. beginning tomorrow night, vdot will begin repaving georgetown from the beltway to springvail road. armando trull reports tonight, some people in great falls feel the roadwork is long overdue. >> reporter: georgetown pike is one of virginia's biways. like some, it's about to get a much needed facelift. >> after this last winter, everybody knows the road needs to be fixed. >> reporter: the pike is nearly 12 miles of winding road with plenty of potholes. >> they can't just do pothole fixes on this road. >> reporter: starting tomorrow night around 9:00, vdot crews will be milling and repaves georgetown pike. the work goes for eight miles all the way to springvail road and this will happen every night from 9:00 until 5:00 in the morning. except overnight friday into saturday when work ends a bit later at 9:00 a.m. georgetown pike is virginia's first historic and scenic biway. it took ten years for it to earn a spot on the national register of historic places. now that it's there, any work on the pike needs to respect this heritage. >> the pike was started in 1813, so it is 200 years old. we are trying to keep it the way it looks now, so it retains its historic value. virginia department of transportation is expecting to wrap up work in two months as long as the weather holds. reporting on georgetown pike, armando trull, wusa9. >> vdot is recommending that commuters looking to avoid delays use old dominion drive instead. a man is shot to death in northwest washington. we know who died. police don't know who killed him. neighbors reported hearing gun shots near the intersection of quebec place just before 11:00 last night. that is where police found 23- year-old, dondre dire, suffering from multiple gun shots. he died a short time later at the hospital. four people were shot overnight at u street in northeast. d.c. fire and ems transported all of the victims to the hospital. we're told none of the injuries is life threatening. this evening d.c. police are looking for suspects. surveillance video captured an armed robbery at a pizza restaurant. tonight, prince georges county police want to hear from anybody who has information about this crime. it happened back on july 18 at the little cesars in the 3700 block of branch avenue. the robert jumped the counter, displayed a gun, and forced the employees to hand over all the cash. anyone with information should contact prince georges county police. authorities have identified the maryland boy who drowned on his 13th birthday. dennis kemp of laurel, maryland, was on a day trip from camp sunshine in silver spring when he drowned in baltimore county at oregon ridge lake. three life guards were still searching for the boy in the muddy water. his body was eventually recovered. the boy drowned in a roped off deep water area, but he had passed a swim test allowing him to be in that area of the lake. washington state, a 17-year- old male has been arrested in the death and sexual assault of a six-year-old girl. the girl's body was found near the bremerton mobile home park where she disappeared last weekend. fbi agents arrested the teen suspect today at his home. he lives in the very same mobile home park as the victim. he faces charges of second-rder, manslaughter, and rape. the naacp in st. louis wants the fbi to investigate the death of a teenager at the hands of a police officer. tonight, police are not saying what led to the shooting death of 18-year-old, michael brown. witnesses say the teen was not armed and had his hands up in the air. the police officer fatally shot him. more than 100 officers armed were called to the scene to restore calm as angry residents gathered after that shooting. president obama is out of town on vacation, so why was the presidential motorcade tieing up traffic in downtown washington today? erica. >> bruce, it does feel a little bit muggy out here, but no more showers in the immediate beltway. you can see some of those showers on doppler 9,000 right now. those showers are tapering off as we head through the overnight. that trend will continue by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, partly sunny with temperatures in the mid 60s to around 70 for most of us. we're going to hold on that to dry trend for one more day, but changes arrive in the first alert seven-day forecast. utility crews on the big island of hawaii are trying to take advantage of the break in bad weather before hurricane julio swirls israelly air strikes in gaza today. israel says hamas fired 70 rockets in its direction since the three-day cease fire expired yesterday. israel responded by firing 30 militant targets in gaza. in one month of fighting, more than 1900 people in gaza, most of them civilians, have been killed. 64 isreali soldiers and three isreali citizens have also been killed. president obama is on martha's vineyard this weekend for start of a two-week vacation. the president and first family arrived at a coast guard station at cope cod earlier today with first pets beau and sunny. he stayed in the family's rental home for 30 minutes before hitting the golf course. the president will make a two- day return trip to wathrough this vacation, but white house advisers have not announced why the president is making that return trip to washington. the president left town, so how come presidential motorcade is disrupting traffic in downtown washington today? fact is, it's a mock motorcade being filmed for the popular tv series, house of cards. the crew for the political drama was filming along pennsylvania and constitution and independence avenues today. the show stars kevin spa spacey. most scenes are shot in baltimore. when you need the real thing, you have to come to the nation's capital. some local kids took part in a book fest at the dorothy road. took turns reading to the children at the northeast d.c. event. more than 2,000 books were given to first and second graders. the older students got library cards. washington teacher's union organized the event as part of a nationwide project to get millions of books to needy children across the country. first of its kind slot machine in maryland is being unveiled tonight. a $1 million slot buted at 11:00 p.m. at the maryland live casino in hanover. gamblers bet $500 for a single chance at a million bucks. there are also $10,000, and $50,000 prizes. people in parts of hawaii are picking up the pizzas following tropical storm iselle. now the islands are bracing for a second soaking from hurricane julio, which is expected to deliver a glancing blow beginning tomorrow. >> we have ice over here. >> hundreds lined up on hawaii's big island to get free water and ice after tropical storm iselle went through. lost electricity three days ago, but supplies ran out. >> i was standing here over two hours. >> iselle made her mark along the big island's east coast. wind gusts up to 85 miles per hour uprooted trees and brought down power lines leaving a large rural swoth of the island in the dark. >> utility crews are repairing downed power lines while taking advantage of the break in the rain. the area is expected more rough weather when hurricane julio is expected to pass north of hawaii. >> hawaii electric light says outages could last until next week. business owners in nearby hilo are getting back to work. he says the storm forced him to close up shop for two days and now he is trying to avoid taking another financial hit. >> with our product, when we get it, it is usually about 18 hours hold. from that, we have 72 hours to move it. right now, we are in that last tier. half of what they were a couple days ago. >> he is hoping to sell his fresh fish before it goes bad. bigat shaban, hawaii. >> more of the same tomorrow? >> yeah, tomorrow is going to be very similar to what we had today. so that means not picture perfect, but still a great day to spend outside for most of the day. it is definitely feeling like summer. seasonally warm, seasonally humid. but nothing that we can't tolerate here in d.c., that's for sure. starting off with a look at the michael and son weather cam and we have partly cloudy sky out there right now, which is really a shame because this is the super moon. tonight and again tomorrow night when the moon actually fully turns full. i know we talked about the super moon last month and this is the time when it is as close to earth as it ever gets. this will be the biggest and brightest moon, just unfortunate that we are not going to get the best view we could have. the dew point, 66. there is plenty of humidity in the atmosphere and the wind out of the south at 6 miles per hour isn't gong to help us get rid of that humidity. those sprinkles that are popping through on doppler 9,000 and another is possible until we get past midnight and then it's just going to be a seasonally warm and muggy day on sunday. as i mentioned before, it's not going to be stifling humidity, but typical for this time in august and the workweek is when we will increase that chance for showers. a yellow alert on tuesday as the bulk of the storm system that is on the approach will move through. now on satellite and radar, you can see that cloud cover is mostly staying well to the south and to the the metro. good news for us, we're going to be able to clear out full little lingering sprinkles and on 9 future cast as you are waking up, sunshine over the beltway. so those clouds will diminish. but in the afternoon, with a peek of sunshine, we could get some of those cumulouse clouds to look up. they could drop another shower or two just like we had today. nothing that should make you think about canceling your outdoor plans. on monday, we'll watch that cloud cover increase again and by tuesday, here comes the cold front. that is what is going to bring us more of that scattered storm activity. so overnight tonight, partial clearing. especially once we get past midnight. 63 to 69 for your overnight lows. then on sunday morning, we'll start out with a partly sun gnu sky and temperatures in the 60s and 70s. by the afternoon, high temperatures 84 do 89 under partly cloudy sky. a slight chance for a shower. green weather alerts both tomorrow and on monday. monday this looks a little ominous with that thunderstorm. an isolated shower or storm and most of that activity will be to the west of the beltway. it is tuesday that we are concerned about the threat for scattered showers and storms. pretty much at any point during the day. in the first alert seven-day forecast, a stray shower still possible, but things are looking pretty good as we head into next weekend with lots of sunshine on thursday and friday and comfortable temperatures as well. >> yeah, you know, tiger take a backseat. there's a new star on the run. >> tiger needs to go off the tour, get healthy, get better at his game, because you're not going to catch rory mcllroy. he is unbelievable. 25-year-old continuing his strong play on the just any tournaments that he is name that came out of nowhere. with his approach at 17, check out the stick. just inches from the cup. beautiful. taps in for birdie. rory having an incredible shot as well. approach on 16, also puts it within a couple feet. doesn't even move. nice, wet greens. mcllroy heads to the final round with a one shot lead. >> you know, it wasn't as easy as i expected it to be today. they tucked a few pins away and obviously playing with the lead as well. you maybe can play with the freedom. but really happy with, you know, with how i finished. shoot another 67 without really having my best stuff was really pleasing. >> exciting to watch him in a shootout tomorrow. washington nationals continue battling out down south. a big weekend series. the nationals head into tonight's game 3 1/2 games ahead of the brace. however, mother nature wanted these two teams to wait a very, very long time. almost four hour rain delay. nice game finally got underway at 10:50. later than all the other west coast games. a great hit, but jason heyward robs him and still scoreless at the bottom of the second. buck and the orioles hosting the cardinals. they found their home run mojo. caleb johnson homers in the second inning. that is his fifth consecutive game with a home run. but he wasn't the only one. 5th inning, two on for young. he just makes it look so easy. that one is gone. three home runs for the
