Reporter by the time this wreck was over five cars were strung out across the road mangled. Both sides of the road were shut down and nearly a dozen people were taken to the hospital. There was drag racing on the north side of 301 there. It happened so fast. Reporter lon colbert and Leonard Jones were riding in the same car when the crash happened. They were hit but not hurt. We ended up in the ditch. Luckily we were in the slow lane. The two other vehicles werent so lucky. Reporter according to victims of the crash, this black car was drag racing with another car on the northbound lanes of 301. They crossed into southbound traffic. Some of the folks inside the cars we spoke with say it was absolutely terrifying to see those two speeding cars come from one side of the road, skip the median and slam right into them. Its the worst thing ive ever been involved in. Reporter the crash was so violent one of the cars hit erupted into flames. 11 people in total were taken to area hospitals in varying conditions. Some went by ground, others by air including a small child according to those who saw it happen. One small child was it was pretty bad. He didnt look too good. Metro has identified the contractor killed during a repair work assignment on the red line overnight. Hes 41yearold Harold Ingram from new jersey. Ingram was killed and two metro employees injured during an explosion and fire in a tunnel overnight near Union Station. The men were working to replace a large rail and were hit by the structure. Reporter two metro employees and a contractor are rushed to the hospital after crews were doing weekend work on the red line. The contractor died. Metro says a fluid leak or mechanical problems caused a loud noise or explosion. The Transit System is looking to see if that caused a 40foot rail to move and hit the workers. D. C.
