The man nicknamed the chief, Diane Roberts catching up with a former nationals star. During the ten years the nationals have been around, theyve had characters both boisterous and quiet. Somewhere in th someone they called chief, closer chad cordero. Whats he doing now . We caught up with anymore maryland. Reporter these days you can find cordero on the baseball fields with the titans. Hhes working as an undergraduate assistant with the baseball team. Juggling baseball, classes, team, family time. I love it. I work with the bull pen guys and just to be able to put on a uniform again and be on the field, i love it. Reporter cordero remembers fondly his time with the Washington Nationals and their predecessors, the expos. The first game at rfk stadium in 2005 is his favorite nats memory. Bringing back baseball for so many years and just seeing the fans jump up and down with the fans as they were jumping and stuff. Just the whole energy that night was unbelievable. Reporter corderos best year with the franchise was the first in d. C. He was junes pitcher of the month and represented the nationals at the allstar game. Rightie known for his fast ball says he remembers everything. Just the whole vibe with the city is great. I still get goose bumps talking about it. My time here was probably one of the greatest times ive ever had in my life. One of the worst times came in 2010. When his nearly threemonth old daughter died of sids. He left baseball in 2008 run and tried to make a comeback to the game after the loss of his daughter but could never return to his 2005 form. But he did return to nats park, where he only played one season. It was great. There was only a couple faces that i actually played with. But some people came up and recognized me. I saw a couple of cordero jerseys. Now corderos cool experiences come courtesy with cal state fullerton. Diane roberts, wusa 9 sports. Great story, di. Cordero had arm problems as you heard. The nats hope Stephen Strasburg didnt have any more arm problems. Stras has spent the last couple days getting checked out by the chiropractor. Good news. Things seem to be trending in a positive direction who says things seem to be better. He threw a bull pen session today and saysall things were checking out. Just trying to keep it simple. Not trying to alter mechanics too much and let the better range of motion, the better flexibility just kind of get me back on track. Obviously theres always room to improve, and im just going to keep trying to get better and keep moving forward. All right. That is great news there. Lets head back out to nats park. Holden cushner was there. But first lets talk aboutstras. But he wasnt happy with the way the injury was reported. He wanted to clarify that today. But he wanted to make sure the people who covered the team on a regular basis, some of us were asked to announce our names so he knew the people he was talking to today. But he had said, listen, it was reported that my shoulder was bothering me, but thats not what it was. Its my ankle. My ankle, i was landing a different way. That led to a problem with my back. So it was never his shoulder. Went to the chiropractor. It looks like its all good. Hell be throwing tomorrow. Hell be reevaluated. And well see when he can get back into rotation. Zimmerman, tomorrow. And then they head to address and then back to san diego before heading back here. Thats good news on him. Lets go back to Frank Robinson. Of course this was a special day. So many great memories surrounding him. But you might have one of the best stories of all, right . You unearthed quite a story with frank . I remember talking with davy johnson during spring training. This was back in 2013. We got to talking about a night which all the orioles were having a good time. There was a pool involved. Frank robinson fell in the pool, and davy said that he and boot powell ended up pulling Frank Robinson out of the pool. He says why dont you ask frank about it. Well, fast forward two years later. I went up to frank today and i told him the story. He said its absolutely not true. I said, its not true . He said, no. Someone else saved my life. So davy, you were called out. It was not you. It was one of your teammates who saved Frank Robinson from drowning in a pool at least someone saved his life. Real quick, bryce harper, real dramatics. What was it like become in the stadium . Hes taken over. Hes the face of the team. Hes playings a hes turning into the player we thought he would be. Great workout there today. The local couple whose free range kids sparked a debate are back in the spotlight. They gathered in a local park and many blastered Child Protection for their reaction to this case. This was the park where the children were playing before they started their onemile walk. It was a walk that ended when they were picked up by police. I think Child Protective Services in maryland have gone overboard. Richard fox was among a small but determined group of families who believe it should be parents, not the state, who decide whether a child is mature enough to walk a reasonable distance from home without an adult. By letting our children walk to school, are we now going to get our kids picked up by the cops and cps knocking on our door . Its a very terrifying thought. I didnt think that could happen in the u. S. Last month their two children were walking home from this park when someone called 911. Two kids that are uncompanied and theyve been Walking Around for probably about 20 minutes by themselves. Just three blocks from their home, police took the children in custody and brought them to cps in rockville, not notifying their parents for hours. What happened to their children is atrocious. I was absolutely livid. The problem with cps going after unattended kids is statewide. It crosses all races and barriers. We have older siblings watching younger siblings because child care is expensive. We shouldnt be criminalizing that. Who should make that decision . They didnt attend, but their lawyer did, along with his own 10yearold son. Whenever i walk to the park or the library or to a market, i do it with just thinking, yeah, i can do this. Reporter turn to dowd said the parents are still recovering from their ordeal. Put yourself in the shoes of a 10yearold boy or 6yearold girl and theyre in the back of a police car for three hours. Knowing that they were three blocks from home. Thats a absolutely horrible situation. Theyre appealing Child Protective Services finding of neglect. Theyre still working on a lawsuit against the county, one that may name cps and Montgomery County police in the silver spring, wusa 9. The appeals process could last several months. An overturned tractor trailer shuts down the bay bridge and backs up traffic for several hours today. It shut down all westbound lanes of the bridge in convene annes county. Meantime, in baltimore, prince released his protest song today just before a rally for peace concert tomorrow. According to a prince spokesperson, the song is about the unrest in baltimore and the killing of young black males in the country. He will headline a concert in baltimore tomorrow.
