Lets get to todays game and we want to talk about the colts and the giants. Start with you, brian, you got a chance to play andrew luck in the regular season. Won the game easily, but talk about how hes progressed since that day. I dont think you realize how big he is, 64 mine backer playing quarterback. Moving around really well. Couldnt fool him later on. No, he got better, obviously. Seems every other year, the giants make the playoffs, is this the year they bounce back . The east is an anything division. What dallas did with monty, you expect them to be better. Rg3 going, everything thats going on in washington. Easy for new york to fly under the radar. This is a division where i think every single team could win ten games, or is not going to win ten, but every one could win eight. If rg3s knee holds up youre going to stick with the redskins. Theres hope for everybody, but particularly the giants. They had that issue last year at running back and defensive line. As their pass rush goes and defensive line, good news is jason pierrepaul, he says he feels so much better night and day from a year ago to now. Still on the pup list. Tom coughlin will try to protect him from himself, but hes telling the guys i think im good to go, but i think they may protect him from himself. But, ply friends, we got a long way to go before were talking about the super bowl. And were talking preseason football, giants 97 a year ago. Well talk about eli. But on the other side a young indianapolis team, an 11win team and this quarterback, andrew luck, i know you cant wait to see him. Im looking forward to watching him, seeing him play live, last year as a rookie, surpass everyones expectations, the entire team did. As they move into the season, a lot of attention to the development of andrew luck, but so many young rookie players last year that are also going to be better. The supporting cast is going to be better. What theyre looking for, they want to run the ball better and protect luck better. Well get a chance to see how far theyve come tonight. And you know what else we get to do, we get to talk to andrew luck. Thats why were excited to have pam oliver, the best the in the business, with us. I know youll talk to andrew. Who else . Stability for the giants, tom coughlin in his tenth season, number two on the alltime wins list among giants head coaches. Theres his record. 8361. Hes not happy that they got off to yet another good start last year and then stumbled down the stretch and missed the postseason. And after visiting with him yesterday, hes also not real thrilled with the collective Bargaining Agreement and the limited amount of contact in practice. Obviously a guy whos been in the league a long time, seen a lot of changes. Its been a real adjustment for him in that regard. Joe he said ive only had 17 practices, including little jog throughs and coughlin does not like to leave a lot to chance. This one starts with a bang. Right off the crossbar, and here comes eli manning and the giants offense. 86 wins for eli with coughlin. 211 touchdown passes. He wants to get back to what he did down the stretch, two seasons ago when the giants won it all. He also wants to see what hakeem nicks has on the outside, battling injuries last year and again during camp. This one starts with no more Ahmad Bradshaw. Hes with the colts. Heres some of the guys to watch in this game tonight and really this season. Justin pugh on the far end, first round pick, tackle andre brown, david wilson, and nicks and randal and they really like Rueben Randle with the giants. Troy he got a lot of opportunities to get work in with victor cruz holding out and hakeem nicks being injured. Joe delay on the handoff. Its wilson out to the 45 and a good start to the ground game for the giants. A 20yard carry tackle by walden and wilson gets pumped up. Troy just the power play. See the fullback lead the way and david wilson does an excellent job finding the hole. He has tremendous quickness. Theyre expecting a lot of big things from him, obviously with the absence now of Ahmad Bradshaw, theyre trying to figure out whether its him or andre brown that carries the load for the offense. Joe manning goes for cruz downfield and incomplete. And theyre going to throw a flag. Contact was made and it was greg toler, firstyear colt. And it is going to be pass interference. Thats the indication against indianapolis. Troy you see eli manning in the pocket, and he holds it, just a tick too long. So hes not quite able to get this ball out there. It was behind the defense. Joe they called it, but it was toler who got his body right here into the back of victor cruz. And its a 39yard penalty. Troy you saw eli, he just held it a second longer, because he wants to make sure the safety was biting and that cruz was going to get in behind him. Thats why the ball was underthrown, but they still get the yardage because of the pass interference. Joe he just limped off the field after that play. Jim cordle is in at center. Handoff to wilson running left. And wilson picks up three. Walden on the stop. Lets go back to the pass interference play. Thats something that no team wants to see in a preseason game. Troy not with your starting center. Hes been a little bit of a concern coming into the season. As you see, he gets left knee as he reaches for it, he had a number of surgeries this off season. Multiple surgeries. He wouldnt clarify what all he had done, he said it was a tuneup on his body, but obviously he came out of last year very banged up. Joe on second down, manning just has nowhere to go. Under pressure. Throws it into the turf. Its third down. Now we look at indianapolis. New faces, defensively, franklin up front. Ricky jean francois. Walden is a former green bay packer. And you have the young, high draft pick, first round out of florida state, Bjoern Werner, who is going to back up Robert Mathis as a pass rusher for this colds defense. Third and seven. Manning with protection underneath by the running back. Still short of the first down. Andre brown, their third down back, primarily, troy, because hes a better blocker. Got it from manning, but hes dropped two yards shy of a first down. Troy yeah, and as you see here, want giants are going to go for t probably in a regular season game, the third possession, they kick the field goal, but because youd get limited opportunities on these types of things in preseason, this is a chance for them to do some of their short yardage work. Joe brown still in at tailback. And he gets it running left. Andre brown is going to be knocked down short of the line to gain. And it will be the colts football inside their own ten. The guy who blew up that play was kelvin sheppard. He made the play defensively. Thats gots tom coughlin shaking his head, a turnover on down. Colts ball, no score. Troy the way he reached down and grabbed his knee, it looked like it was a knee injury. He gets rolled on the left ankle and it did not look good. But he did walk off the field. Someti know even with that. But for an ankle injury, that would appear to be a good sign. Joe second down and 11. Faked the handoff. Cross the body, dangerous throw for fleener. The pass is broken up and nearly picked off. Troy it was a risky throw, but i have been really impressed with andrew lucks ability to square his shoulders on the line of scrimmage. He delivers a ball that should have been caught by fleener. Fleener coming off concussion. As tight a window as that was, that should have been caught for a first down. Joe can you describe to someone like me, how hard that throw was, how good that throw was . Troy it was an excellent throw. Thats one area, that was a drop, but when you say, how can he get better . Hell get better this year completing more passes. Joe heres a handoff. Thats ballard. And ballard has nowhere to go, and he gets smoked inside the five. A loss of one. Fleener dropped a couple of balls in the preseason opener, and he dropped what could have been and should have been probably a sure first down on that drive. And in the end, its three and out. Hamilton cannot be happy. They wanted to be able to run the football. They tried twice, they get no yardage. Defensively for the giants, outstanding job. Kiwanuka blows it up on first down. They have their fingers crossed its not too severe. Joe jim cordle has already taken over at center. And baas who is in his third year here with the giants, goes down early in this one. Just have to hope its nothing severe. Second down and one. Heres wilson. Makes one man, but just gets back to the line of scrimmage. Maybe lost half a yard and Ricky Jean Francois was there defensively for indianapolis. Third and short coming up. You talk about the colts defense and offense as well, and what the objective was coming in, what they really wanted to do, they wanted to get more physical, they wanted to get bigger in the frentrenches an their general manager did an outstanding job bringing in some Young Players in the draft that contributed and was able to go out and sign a couple of guys and really help try to solidify the defensive front, so they can be Better Holding up against some of these running teams. Andre brown gets it on a toss, running left. Gets a block and picks up the first down. Steps out of bounds at the 32, a gain of eight on third and short. Troy they run right at the rookie Bjoern Werner and hes not able to secure the edge. Right here at the end position. These are the areas that hell continue to get better as he gains a little bit more strength. Hes primarily going to be used as a pass rush specialist. Hes looking to back up Robert Mathis. Dont anticipate hell be an earlydown player against the run. That was third down, the giants ran the ball and they were able to get the edge on him. Joe play action pass, manning with protection, now has to scramble. Has a man and hes got nicks inside the 15. Hakeem nicks, good for 20. And good protection that time forcin eli manning. Just outstanding protection in the pocket, because originally, eli mannings trying to get the ball to murphy to the strong side, double covered. Hes able to keep the play alive because of the protection and hakeem nicks just does an excellent job, running in a dig route, realizes manning is in trouble, works out to the sideline and manning puts it right on the money. Play clock at eight. Joe on first down, its wilson. And david wilson takes it down inside the ten. A pickup of three. We saw last year david wilson and how explosive he can be. It came later in the year because if you remember, giant fans certainly do, that week one he had the fumble. And kind of went in cough lins dog house, then got more playing time, was big on the special teams kickoff return, but hes a much tougher runner than he would get credit for a guy with as much explosion as he has. Joe and wilson picks up two to bring up third down Ricky Jean Francois out there for the colts. So the giants are back in that same area where they went for it on fourth and short. They were stopped the last time they had it. Now its third down and five. Ahmad bradshaw, and with his departure, hes now with the colts. The giants do not have a ton of experience or total rushing yards in career in their back field here in 2013. Manning throws and its off the hands of the intended receiver, harty. A chance for the firstyear player out of the citadel, kevin hardy. He had to glance off his hands to bring it down. Troy they had a chance. Three receivers to one side. Eli leads him out of that break perfectly and just a ball that hardy just wasnt able to handle. Joe 25 yard field goal try coming from josh brown. So a guy whos had a dependable leg and kicked some big field goals getting these giants into the super bowl is gone. Now its josh braun. Former seahawk and ram. Knocks it through in the first points of the night. They belong to the giants. And a nice embrace between tom coughlin and his former running back, and a leader on this giants team, Ahmad Bradshaw, before the game. D his truck. And a broken fence. And a lost calf. Troy you see the amount of times he got hit last year, more than anybody in football. As i was talking a little bit earlier, this guy in college completed 71 of his passes. Last year, he completed just 54 , and thats really because he was under so much duress. Hes only going to get better as he gets more and more protection. I couldnt be more and more impressed with this young man. Joe coming off the edge, colts pick it up. Hilton downfield, incomplete. Amukamara on the coverage and its third and ten coming up. Burning questions for the colts as we go into the season. More pep in their offense, pep hamilton wantings to run it more, protection for luck. He got hit way too much. For as good as he is and as valuable as he is last year. And more defensive production for this team that went 115 and lost in the playoffs to the eventual champion ravens. Troy its interesting the relationship between hamilton and luck goes back to stanford. In his second year, luck was the elder statesmen in terms of installing the offense. Joe luck gets away from the blitz. Finds his man, gets away from it. Heywardbey will take it across the 30. Troy vick ballard, youre going to see he starts inside, which is what youre supposed to do, secure the inside, realizes its handled, back out, good block on a blitzing line backer, great presence there by andrew luck in delivering in excellent pass. Joe you heard Brian Urlacher in our short pregame talk about the size of luck, 64 239 like a line backer. Quick throw and thats heywardbey again. He shows the moves and some speed, picks up nine and a half. Rivers out there to make the stop. Well show you some of the players to watch, but its a guy that size talking about andrew luck, with the foot work that andrew luck has, and i know thats what stand out on tape to you. Troy i think that playing quarterback really, you know, youve got to have an arm, you got to have intelligence, you got to have a lot of things to make it work, but a big far of success in the pocket is great balance. And pep hamilton stresses that. Watching these young quarterbacks, fundamentally speaking, technically wise, i think andrew luck is as good as there is. Joe see whos guilty of initiating that jump. Referee five yard penalty, results in a first down. Joe joseph is guilty and thats a first down by penalty. Shaun rogers came across as well. Troy the other thing id say, joe, for the colts offensively, i know theyd like to run the ball more, but i dont think thats theyre going to go as far as andrew luck allows them to go. I dont think its so much about running the ball so much. They were not that far off the league average. They just have to run it better when they do. Joe pass is caught by reggie wayne. And reggie wayne, who has 968 career receptions, tenth on the alltime list shows a great strong righthand. Troy how good is that. These guys work on these things in practice. Thats outstanding. Cris carter used to do that routinely when he was playing. Of course he just recently went into the hall of fame. Congratulations to him. Good chance reggie wayne will be going into the hall of fame as well. Even when Marvin Harrison was alongside him, i was really impressed with how great a player he was and his ability to run routes. Joe play action from luck. Time runs out. And andrew luck will run for the first down and fall forward at the 35. Pre tuck, a 14 yard run and a first down for the colts. Troy you mentioned Brian Urlacher talking about lucks size in the pregame. He also talked about how well he moves for such a big man, thats a great example of it. Excellent coverage on the back end by the giants, but not able to get to andrew luck and keep him from picking up some nice yardage there on the scramble. Joe so first down at the 35 yard line. Throw to heywardbey, on the edge, and amukamara makes the play, dragging him down after a gain of seven. Heres pam oliver with a report on victor cruz. Pam thats right. The giants have another offensive player who is in trouble. Now its victor cruz. He went back to the locker room. Hes come back out. He had xrays on his foot. Hes out of uniform at this point. Not coming back into the game. Not what the giants want to see here. Joe they lost david baas, their center with a knee on the second play. Troy didnt look like there was any contact. Joe luck is, its in the air and caught for the touchdown by reggie wayne it was nearly picked off. Luck got hit after letting that pass go, and the pass was nearly intercepted. Theres luck going down. And on the back end of this play, it was ross back with the giants who put it up in the air and then reggie wayne tapped it to himself and made the catch for the touchdown. Troy it was hard to tell how much the pressure by keith rivers impacted the throw, but clearly a poor throw by andrew luck, and aaron ross in excellent coverage, and an opportunity to make an interception, not only does he not make it, but he pops it up in the air and reggie wayne, making an acrobatic catch on the drive. Aaron ross who they say has come back after one year in jacksonville for what he had over the years here with the giants. He won a super bowl, got a deal for the jaguars, left, now hes back. Vinatieri knocks it through. And after a 28yard touchdown pass from luck to ross to wayne, its 73 colts. Joe so much for the emphasis on establishing that running game. Second drive not one run except for an andrew luck scramble. Its a touchdown pass to reggie wayne, a 73 lead and the kickoff is through the back of the end zone off the foot of brandon mcmanus. Give you the giants team questions, the burning questions going into the season. Line backer core, who is the starting middle line backer, and whats the makeup of that group . How good are they . The running game without Ahmad Bradshaw . The emphasis with wilson and brown, and the help of hakeem nicks. Last year, a foot, then a knee. Hes already battled a sore groin this camp. Troy i would add jason pierrepauls back injury into that equation as well, a guy who may not be ready for week one, but they will need him in a new and fresh justin tuck this year as well. Joe handoff is to brown, running right, up from the safety spot, a gain of seven. The other spot that was a question mark coming into camp was right tackle and david diehl. They trafted, as we talked about, justin pugh, david diehl spent the off season and got himself into the best shape hes been in in ten years, lost ten pounds, credits it to juicing throughout the off season, and the great job he was doing this off season has prepared him for this draining camp and hes been able to hold off a guy whos missed a lot of time in justin pugh. Joe about a yard shy of the first down. And the juicing stuff, that good for you . Troy thats the new craze. Its working. For him. Its working for david diehl. Joe uptempo offense. Giants want to use some of this tonight. They employ it here in the third possession, third and one. Troy what did tom coughlin say they called this . The mock offense. Joe got to the line fast. Intercepted by toler and greg toler in his first year with the colts, the former cardinal, with a pass intended for nicks, made a nice interception. The turnover from manning and the colts after the touchdown, get it right back. Troy youll see the spacing between these receivers, Brandon Myers gets pushed out. You see you got two guys, receivers, essentially running in the same spot. That confuses everything from the look of the quarterback and tolers able to come under the throw and does an excellent job. He got called he didnt get called, but he got beat earlier on the first possession by the giants. But a guy whos had an excellent camp and i know chuck pagano is excited him taking over that position opposite of vontae davis. Joe so far, luck, handoff is to ballard. And vick ballard, who will share the carries with Ahmad Bradshaw when hes healthy, coming back from foot surgery. And donald brown picks up four. We have a minute left in the opening quarter. Colts here, who did not play well. And did not make their owner very happy. And 73 lead. Now second and six. Here is ballard again. Pushing the pile on to the left side, third and short. Coming up. Pressure from walden and down goes manning. Eric walden who is going to provide pressure from the other side opposite Robert Mathis, gets in, goes right through david diehl and gets the sack. Troy david diehl just gets out of position and eric walden just does an excellent job coming on the rush. The rookie Bjoern Werner, hes going to drop. Thats an area he has to get out to but thats what the 3 4 defense allows you to do. Walden, a guy whos expected to pick up the slack from Dwight Freeney who went to san diego, and he makes a nice play there for the sack. Handoff is to brown. Andre brown after the loss of 13 yards on the sack, takes it to the ten. Troy defensively, you look at whats happened here in the First Quarter and now into the Second Quarter, the giants have moved the football, but two trips inside the red zone. And they only give up, the colts only give up three points. On the third defensive possession, they get the interception. Here they are on their fourth defensive possession holding the giants to a third and long situation. Joe its third and 20. Manning, with time, hes a little short for kevin hardy. And so fourth down, its three and out and that sack by walden set things in motion. Troy heres hakeem nicks, victor cruz out with his heel injury and the question has been whats the health of hakeem nicks. Kevin gill bright wanted to see in this game, can he recapture whatever speed he had prior to last year. Hes never been a burner, but he could run by some people. Last year that was lost because of the nagging injuries. Hes had some again this year, as we documented. But he doesnt look like hes back to form, at least here in this preseason game.
