there. the national hurricane center says it made landfall northeast of corpus christi around 11:00 p.m. our time. this morning we have team coverage of the storm. sabina kuriakose tracking the storm's possible path let's start with meteorologist mon any yes cryan a lot of people comparing this storm to hurricane katrina back in 2005. >> it did make landfall even stronger storm than katrina. katrina made landfall as cat three, we had cat 4a very very scary situation in texas let's take look. earlier we did have a category four landfall. now what we're seeing it really really has weakened significantly. so we've got a category one hurricane those winds at 85 miles per hour that doesn't mean anything. this is still going to be a devastating storm because of the forecast and here's what's going to happen. as we head into monday and tuesday, this is going to weaken into a tropical storm, but then loop back around and that's going to continue to be bringing rain this whole time. all the way through tuesday. wednesday it's going to take more northerly turn becoming a depression, but still, we are talking rainfall all the way into tuesday and wednesday through parts of texas. that's why flooding is the big concern here. because we've got a prolonged period all the way into the midweek a very heavy rainfall. storm surge is still a concern. those winds are big concern and tornadoes also through today it's that rain that 15 to 25-inches in general. not to mention those localized areas getting 40 plus inches of rain. so from corpus christi to houston is where we are expecting some of the hardest hit areas especially along the coastline when it comes to that storm surge. we'll keep up to date. but back here, guys, things are absolutely gorgeous. i was saying as i was working last night it's hard to talk about how beautiful our weather is here when they're dealing with such horrible weather down in texas, but back here, the weekend is turning out to be great one. 67 right now. those dew points into the low 50s so we're not only dealing with low humidity, lots of sunshine. i've got a look at the full forecast coming up in just bit. i'm keeping track of hurricane harvey as it continues to bring and pound parts of texas. >> all right. monica, thank you very much. as the sun rises this morning we're getting our first look at the damage along the texas morning, laur lauren. so far no deaths have been reporter. that is the most important thing although we are getting reports of some injuries. we don't know the extent of those. now the national weather service says this morning although harvey again has been downgraded in strength to category one the hurricane is moving slowly inland into texas bringing with it walls of rain over 100 miles per hour winds and storm surges that could reach as high as 13 feet. now, this is video from overnight as harvey battered the texas coastline. tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. others we're told to shelter in place. now we're getting reports of major structural damage to buildings including a high school and a senior housing complex whose roofs had caved in. authorities say they are treating people from that senior center but right now we have no word on what their injuries might be, and check out this video. firefighters in victoria, texas, spent last night trying to put out a duplex fire that broke out just after 8:00 while wild winds from harvey battered down on those emergency workers. now the town is about 40 miles from the texas coastline. reports indicate that that duplex burnt down to the ground. officials right now warning residents may not be able to return to their homes in texas in the areas hardest hit for weeks or months. >> the people who live here have been through many, many hurricanes and tropical storms. so we're prepared, and ready to ride it out. >> the most important thing that you can do is to safeguard orien life. >> people need to be aware this is significant rainfall that is being projected. we're already seeing some rainfalls of four to 6-inches throughout the county, and it's going to be rain like this overnight. the going to be raining for the next three to five days solid according to the national weather service. that's lot of rain. it's going to somewhere. >> reporter: as you heard there this is just the beginning and again we could be seeing the effects of this storm for days. now, the worry right now is historic flooding especially in places like houston as you heard there the national hurricane center is calling that flooding potentially catastrophic and life threatening, again, that's possible through wednesday. now coming up half an hour we'll have what local volunteers here in our area are doing to try to help the people in texas. lauren, back to you. >> sabina, thanks for that update. hurricane harvey coming ashore as the fear rest hurricane to hit the u.s. in dozen years. harvey is the first category four hurricane to make landfall in texas since carla in 1961. rob schmidt has the very latest. >> reporter: hurricane harvey battering the texas coastline with rain and whipping winds fierce winds. pelting trees and toppling rooftops. national hurricane center warned texas to prepare for life threatening flash flooding. this huge system grew from unnamed storm to a life threatening major hurricane in just over two days. >> all right. here at home our local red cross already helping those in need as sabina mentioned regional call center at 23rd and chestnut handling calls coming in from texas and louisiana. also, two volunteers from philadelphia already dispatched and arrived at the gulf coast last night. >> we anticipate that we will have to send more staff and volunteers as emergency. monica, scary stuff for everyone involved. first responders, those riding the storm out. everyone in texas right now. >> yeah, very scary situation. that continues to unfold and unfortunately with this, what i'm thinking is going to be the big issue where a lot of hurricanes, you know, it's the wind and the storm surge at the initial part of landfall some of the most devastating part of this. i think this is going to be prolonged so even as the hurricane really weakens and moves away, the flooding is going to continue from corpus christi up at houston area for quite sometime. this is going to be weeks that we will be covering the effects of hurricane harvey. here's what we're looking at right now. again it made landfall. it hasn't weakened but we still can see the eye. meaning this is a strong storm. it is still very strong storm bringing gusty winds an lot of rain much here's the threats for today for parts of the texas coast. possibly 25 or more inches of rain. the surge getting up to 12 feet potentially especially near south padre island. the national seashore and then wind 74 miles per hour. this will start to weaken as that hurricane starts to weaken as well and becomes tropical storm. but there's severe threat for today. saturday for tornadoes to pop up. we have few tornado warnings out there already, and then once we head into the next few days, that severe component the tornado threat will diminish as we head into our sunday. back here, though, a much different story. look how quiet we are. all across the delaware valley, south jersey, delaware, even into pennsylvania, philadelphia, we've got mostly clear skies and that's forecasted to continue as we head into our afternoon. so here we are looking at the afternoon and we're kicking off lunch hour pretty nicely with partly so mostly sunny skies a few stray showers out west. but most of us keeping it clear and dry for today. even as we head into our sunday we've got just announced it wants input, comments from the public on what to do with the rizzo statue. keep it where it is? move it? give it back to the sculptor. that kind of public debate, calm, rationale, should be applauded. but for the record, i'm not entirely sure why an over oversized statue of frank rizzo was placed in such a prominent location in the first place. i was a reasonably alert teenager here back in the 1970s and i couldn't recall any major civic accomplishments. so i did some reading on the subject. maybe i had missed something about the man. what i saw was a lot of talk about rizzo's larger than life personality and his up from nothing bio. good stuff, but still where was the actual a accomplishment? here's what i do know w a business succeeds or fails economists talk about the marketplace deciding winners and losers, that is, customers tell you whether you're doing a good job. well, here's what we know about the decade of the 1970s, the population of the city of philadelphia during that time, again, most of it the rizzo years, plumetted by more than 13%. that's right. nearly one philadelphian out of every seven picked up and moved out. that kind of exodus on that kind of scale hasn't ever before and hasn't happened since. having said that's correct the statue is where it is. so the question now is, what do you do with it? i'm not incentive to claims by members of the minority community that rizzo's policies and practices and pronouncements did more to divide this community than to unite it. but here's an idea. here in the birthplace of democracy, maybe we could come up with better tools to fix this problem than raw eggs and spray paint. vandalizing the statue accomplishes nothing. other than hardening the stance of rizzo's many supporters. >> this is out of control. >> the final decision on the statue may be weeks, even a few months away. that's as it should be. many believe the move to honor rizzo after his untimely death was rushed.
