The Union Representing faculty at pennsylvanias 14 state universities has reached a deal with the state system of higher education. Now, more than 5,000 faculty that hit the picket lines wednesday morning will go back to work. Right after the announcement just over an hour ago those professors and staff they put down their picket signs and theyre ready to head back to class. The picket lines were strong, students and faculty were standing in solidarity and reps on sight only knew that meetings were takes place. By the drive i made by the time i made the drive back here to studio the strike was over. They issued a statement indicating theyve agreed to a three year contract. That contract goes through june of 218 because because their last contract expired over year ago. Now with this agreement, the picket lines at all 14 state owned universities and immediately end immediately and the details of the agreement were not specifically laid out. But they did say that they accepted concessions in salary and benefits. They took those in exchange for eliminating most of nearly 250 proposed changes. Those changes were to everything from sick leave to hiring practices of visiting professors. Those are the things that most of the professors i spoke to they said they were much more important to them than just their paycheck. The actual details point by point will be released after the members are fully informed. Speaking to that, i was actually looking at the unions Facebook Page today. Theyre talking about need to go n the members because many of the faculty from universities across the state they didnt even know about the agreement yet. So they were on facebook asking if they got a good deal. That remains to be seen but the good news is that 100,000 students statewide theyll be back to classes as normal on monday.
