That fire has left 12 people homeless. The flames were so intense, three firefighters had to jump out a window. Fox 29s karen hepp is in bethlehem with more on a very difficult day for firefighters and residents, karen. Reporter yeah, really not just the fire it is also the heat. We still have the scene very active right now. They have this all under investigation this fire. Weve got firefighters that are still out here. In all, there were four families who lost their homes and most of them had been here for decades. It was a smokey fire that got a really big head start. It took every piece of equipment in bethlehem to battle this three alarmer. What started in one double house quickly jumped to another really scary moments when three firefighters got trapped on the second floor. They were cut off by fire on the stair. They didnt have access to the stairs, and they called may day they were trapped and ended up jumping out a second floor window. Reporter all three hurt their feet and one had to go to the hospital. The red cross is helping the four families who lost everything. Jasmine says they lived here for 24 years. First thing that came to my mind mostly the memories i lost my father here. The struggle he put in the house for years. Hardworking man. Rosario was grateful everyone including his dog made it out. Everything we lost in there, thats material stuff. We dont worry about it. You can lose more stuff. Reporter one of the hardest parts of this fire the extreme heat. Popsicles and ice filled towels helped but many firefighters suffered dehydration and heat exhaustion. Rotate guys through. Thats why theres so many guys there. Trying to keep fresh bodies in there and keep the guys as cool as possible. We brought ice water, sewed darks pizza theyre working hard. Its really hot out here today and they need to wear protective gear. Reporter and theyre out here at the scene probably will be likely all the way through till tomorrow morning because this fire is still under investigation right now. It happened just after 11 00 this morning near the intersection of germantown avenue and price street. The officer was responding to a call when he was hit by another car. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A man is in Critical Condition after being shot and stabbed in north philadelphia. It happened just before 1 00 this afternoon. Skyfox over the scene of the 1500 block of north gratz street. The 36yearold victim was found on the street with two stab wounds to the chest and a gunshot wound in his arm. Police do not have a weapon or suspect as of yet. So if you know anything, please call police. The United States is taking a very close look at the way chester Delaware CountyPolice Department operates. After its review the boj will offer suggestions for improvements. Officials made the announcement today in chester. The doj says this comes after a request from the city of chester itself and its Police Department. The best or nothing. Another member of a notorious smash and grab robbery terrorized a region sentenced today. It took a dozen agencies and Crime Fighting to make it happ happen. Fox 29s Dave Schratwieser has the real story on how investigators cracked this multi Million Dollar case. Most in the stores 40 seconds. Reporter they moved with the speed and precision of a swat team. These guys went by names like ice and be ice. Dangerous, violent. Theyre pros. Theres no doubt. Reporter investigators say this crew set in motion as many as 15 armed smash and grab robberies across the trystate area that netted over 8 million isnt stolen highend watches and jewelry. They smash the cases with the hammer people in the mall thought it was gunshots. Everybody hit the floor and screaming theres noise. Theres always a weapon. Victims have a difficult ti time. Authorities say they struck in south jersey, delaware and on up to the mainline in king of prussia. But to nail this group of professional thieves a dozen local Police Departments and the fbis Violent Crimes task force had to track them all the way to california and utah then back east to kentucky, missouri, maine and our area. They thought they were way too smart to be caught. They thought they had all planned out and they can bring it back here. Reporter these guys often practice theirs skills like slicing the silicone around the top of jewelry cases. Like they did in this robbery in ogden, utah. Practice this in their living room. They had actual cases. Reporter task force began to crack the case after three robberies at tour know jewelers in the king of prussia mall. Investigators tracked the crew they took a trip to south street in late august 2012. They watched as three of of the suspects including ringleaders Kenny Williams and rufus lawson went to several stores trying to sell three high end rolex watches stolen from tour knows the day before. After a pursuit Kenny Williams is caught. In his hands hes got three watches with the tags on them. Reporter Philadelphia Police handled the arrest. Charging suspects with receiving stolen property. Back at fbi Headquarters Task force members and local Police Working with them had the break theyve been looking for. About a month later lee fuss dawson called us and said, hey, i give you everything you want. Armed with hand guns and hammers they immediately went right to the rolex counter. They knew exactly where to go. As investigators pieced it altogether the robberies kept coming. One of them was at Bernie Robbins jewelers in radnor township. Superintendent William Colarulo remembers the night these guys made off with more than 30 rolex watches worth nearly half a Million Dollars. But they missed something. There was another container of high hi end rolexs that were double, triple, quadruple the am of rolexs they stole. All of us are on high alert. Harvey is the president of Bernie Robbins jewelers. He says investigators worked closely with the Jewelers Security Alliance made of the top 50 jewelers nationwide. If something happens, even if its an attempt even if suspicious activity 50 jewelers throughout the whole country know about it at once. Reporter detective Sean Deitrich handled the case for radnor police. He says the robbers left behind a security jacket and a hat. Those key pieces of evidence were quickly turned over to the fbi. They were able to end getting dna office by cutting out the collar. Reporter investigators knew the radnor robbery looked similar to the smash and grab take over robbery at stewart king stop jewelers down i9 i9n wilmington, delaware. This video shows the suspects below through the front door before forcing the store owners son edward stein to up lock a safe at the rear of the store. Starts yelling he wants give me the money. The robbers rushed out with 4. 5 million in jewelry, watches and 2 million ruby sculpture end roughed with diamonds known as the liberty bell ruby. They can cut those diamonds off and sell those. Reporter investigators say the bandits would meet at this parking lot at 52n 52nd and parkside and return here after each of the robberies after the wilmington job they decided to split up the proceeds and strip the 50 diamonds from that ruby sculpture. Concerned about facing the ruby and not knowing its real value sources say the bandits threw it in a dumpster at a public hous housing complex in south philly. The next day when they found out how much it was actually worth they returned to the dumpster to retrieve it, the dumpster had already been emptied. The smash and grab rip offs continued. Next they hit goes berg jewelers on montgomery avenue in ardmore. In march 2012 they burst into jay roberts jewelers in evesham, new jersey. Again, they smashed glass cases and scooped up 450,000 in watches. Hammer, smash it up. Reporter but again the robbers left something behind. This hammer used to smash the glass cases. Police and the fbi task force were eventually able to track the hammers used by the robbers to home depots and lose stores. Took dna evidence off that hammer. Dna evidence off some of the clothing left behind. Areas they touched. Reporter video from the stores showed members without masks and disguises they used in the robbery. Old School Police work that wound up taking them down. Reporter investigators are now able to say this smash and grab crew was recruited by Darryl Williams and david story both from philadelphia. They also know that 49yearold rufus lawson told off most of the stolen watches and jewelry. I dont even think they kept any of the watches. Theyd rather have cash and go buy something legitimate for themselves. Reporter but still, a word of caution from investigators. The sentence yesterday 7. 5 years the judge sentenced williams and story to 20 years in federal prison. Lawsons sentence is 10 years. In all they have to pay more than 7 million in restitution.
