snider's incredible history right here in philadelphia. >> ed snider, truly truly an mazing story in itself but the thing that people of this city should really realize is that terrific person he was to everybody. whether it was players, whether because fans and people he did so much for. without a date ed snider was the best sports owner in this town hands down. but there's so much more to the flyers ed snider. ♪ >> he will will be remembered to a generation as the owner of the flyers. but ed snider meant so much more to philadelphia and its fans. ed snider was born edward malcom snid. er on january 6, 1933, in washington, d.c. his first venture in philadelphia sports was as a minority owner of the eagles in 1964. when the nhl was awarding conditional franchises in the middle of the decade, ed snider made his move. >> at 33 years of age i ended up starting the philadelphia flyers hockey team. >> in 1967, the philadelphia flyers were born. he need add building for his team to play in. so ed snider built the spectrum. it was the beginning of unique relationship between a man, a team and a city that would span close to 50 years. ♪ >> win seven years of buying in, and building, ed snider brought a championship to philadelphia. >> the flyers within the stanley cup! >> the flyers won their first of two consecutive stanley cups. >> the flyers have won the second in a row! >> it's just incredible. >> his passion for the flyers never wavered. his vision help the team and the sport grow through different periods of transition but his contributions weren't limited to wins and losses and he understood the responsibility of a professional sports team and what it has to the city it plays in. >> i felt i wanted to something for these kids and i really didn't know how and then i came up with the idea that maybe i could do it through hockey. >> in 2005, ed snider founded the ed snider youth hockey foundation to help inner city children with the game of hockey and life lesson. included in the foundation, the rebuilding of four hockey rinks in the city. >> we were saving lives and to me nothing could be greater than that. >> ed snider is also a member of six hall of fames including the hockey hall of fame. he touched millions of lives in this city. his bond with its fans was unmatched. there's no greater love in sports than the philadelphia flyers and their fans. special feeling of family perm me yates the flyers organizati organization. >> the last time he had senator got to see his beloved flyers was here at his home in santa mon nay california when the flyers were on the coast this new year. so follow your gut if you have an idea, take a chance and more often than not the reward will be worth the risk. >> ed snider was 83 years old. ♪ >> truly interesting comment there are no rewards without risk. in many sports the owners gets close to his players but nobody got as close as ed snider while they were playing or after they retire. as soon as the players met ed snider and got to know him they realized he was so special. >> every time we got to see him, um, you can just feel the palings, you know, just in talking about hockey and, um, you know, he really loves the sport, loves his flyers, he's a philadelphia flyers. >> cares so much about everybody and i think you can tell that through his work in the community, um, he didn't do it, you know, for fame or for anything, you know, other than the fact that, you know, that's trial wal was in his heart. he was such a genuine person and such a big heart end wanted to help everybody out. >> there's so much more to ed snider well beyond what we can do here and we will hear more from the current and past player who's were clearly touched by ed snider. that will be coming up later in the punching a septa driver has now been charged. the violence was all caught on surveillance cameras as the guy was getting off a trolley at springfield mall station last week. septa police tell us the tickets on sale now! ♪ flyers founder ed snider losing his two-year battle with cancer. the 83-year-old died early this morning but he's left his mark on hockey and the city of philadelphia. he was elected into the hockey hall of fame back in 1988. snider oversaw the construction avenue new hockey arena in south philadelphia in 1996 that's now the wells fargo center. he leaves behind his wife a rutgers university student has died after a shooting near the college's newark, new jersey, campus. prosecutors say someone shot 21-year-old shawnee patel of toms river last night. also, shot his roommate. a graduate of the university who is now in critical condition. police say they do not think the shooting is random and they're now search fog the killer. n montgomery county a medical examiner is trying to determine how a cabrini college student died. the 22-year-old man was found unresponsive in a home in west conshohocken on moore head avenue on sunday. police say officers performed cpr and used an anti overdose drug but they were unable to revive the victim. student has not been identified. in a statement cabana college says it is saddened by the news and they are focused on suppor supporting students through the loss. back here at home u.s. senator bob casey of pennsylvania is pushing for laws to reduce our exposure to lead. the lawmaker and officials from chop held around table about the issue this morning. according to the cdc philadelphia county tests more children for lead than any other county in the state. senator casey says meeting with medical officials is a crucial part of helping correct the problem. >> these are folks who have been in these trench as long time. they know the challenge. they're not dealing in near reach they're dealing flames on friday. friends say that 65-year-old pamela plumber had recently been released from a month long stay in the hospital and had been trying to get back to a normal life. >> she was in rehab for three weeks, and now this happened. she just told us two days ago finally she was able to walk her dog by herself schenn was feeling great. >> the crash also set off a chain reaction involving 11 vehicles that collided into each other. seven other people had to be treated at the hospital. some of the patients were in serious condition. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused that dump truck lose control. a wild scene in a long island neighborhood when a small plane comes crashing down. this cell phone video shows the chaos just after the crash late yesterday investigating say the plane was having engine trouble when it clipped utility wires in the area. the plane flipped over, crashed on to the street and then burst into flames. neighbors jumped in trying to help the men inside after calling 911. firefighters were there win just a few minutes. the fire department arrived on the scene, and in unbelievable display of heroism were able to take the pilot and the franchises have won back to back titles. in baseball the philadelphia athletics the teens in 20's and football the eagles of '48, '49 in hockey philadelphia flyers of 1974 and '75. it was ed snider who built those broad street bullies. outside the home ring where the team flag now flies at half staff apart pair of former flyers still with the organization decades after their playing days ended change. you can see some clouds moving in from the west. also, some spotty showers to the lehigh valley and northern counties. northern bucks and also montgomery. this is all shifting towards the north but we will be seeing more rain after midnight all of this will be moving in. i do think up to half an inch of rain is likely through a good part of the region. right now 59 in allentown and reading it's 59 but 68 degrees in dover and down the shore in wildwood rio grand reporting at 61. the cold air stays to the north ottawa, reporting 36. quebec at 32. we'll see some of that cool weather this week but not a lot of it. so this is a scenario warm front lifted to the north. we are in the warm sector. we'll watch this cold front move through tomorrow morning with the rain. heavy at times through at least the midday period. behind this the wind shift we get more avenue northwesterly flow that's a chilly one for us and high pressure system will be dropping down with some cooler air for the midweek but it's not really going to last that long. as we look at all of our computer models you can see a tenth, flee tenths, four terms of an inch but the timing will be critical it will fall during the morning rush. slow go in the morning with strong southwesterly winds and temperatures mild in the 50s and some 60s during the day. once the rain moves through after the lunch hour and early afternoon, the winds shift to the northwest and temperatures come crashing in the afternoon and by the evening temperatures fall into the lower 50s. so overnight tonight looking for low temperatures in the 50s it's going to be mild with a southerly wind. then we cool it it down tomorrow afternoon after we reach 60 degrees. mainly morning rain after the noon hour it should be over in missing after she got separated from them during a kayaking trip off the coast of florida. the girl told the coast guard she lost her paddle when she was caught in awake off a boat she drifted for hours before a coast guard helicopter spotted heard. she did have mild signs of hypothermia but she will be ok okay. thank goodness. two guys saw a man being up a woman in parking lot in phoenix arizona what they did next nearly cost one of those good samaritans his life. the iraq war veteran is now in the hospital in bad shape after a driver ran him down. >> fox's marcy jones explains what happened. >> reporter: jeremy and his pal steve richardson were just on a trip to the grocery store when she saw something strange. >> kind of out of the corner of our eye eye we see a dispute going on. guy has a woman held by the head it took us probably another hundred feet to realize what had we had seen. >> ?? are me and steve tried to intervene the heated dispute good hearted action went terribly wrong. >> backed up went to take off again and just looked right at him full throttle and hit him like you see in the movies about as horrific as you can watch. he hit the hood went up on the windshield, hit the windshield and the top of the car and rolled off. and hit the ground. >> now in critical condition steve is clinging to life. his wife samantha says when she heard what happened, she wasn't surprised by her husband's heroic actions. >> he's amazing. he's -- he's always going to stand up for what he believes in, and he truly believes that woman was in danger and that's what he does. he feels like he needs to protect everyone, and he has a big heart. >> reporter: jeremy says, he and his family will be right by steve's side while he fights to live. adding that he doesn't regret taking action that night. >> he had his hand on her head and was dragging her across the parking lot. you know, that's -- we saw it. we jump. we acted and, you know, would we do anything international space station. on sunday morning, the space x dragon capsule docking at the iss to unload 7,000 pounds worth of supplies and research projects but the real break through it was joined for the first time by orbital zig us in cargo ship marking the first time two commercial spacecraft have been docked at the same time. >> i think this is a really good milestone for the future of space from time to time i'm it's another step towards the stars. >> reporter: space x ship delivering inflatable pod about the size of a bedroom. it's an early prototype for living spaces to be used on long-term space missions. nasa says it's one of the many ways the cargo runs are helping to develop what they call space culture. >> one of the mechanisms to develop an over arching space culture to help crews member deal with that stress. >> reporter: double decking taking place after nasa announced it was outsourcing its cargo runs. the program initial had a rocky starts requiring mum pell attempts at huge price tags to get their rocket noose orbit. now, space x says the ships are becoming the new standard but there's still a lot of work to be done. >> they will work incredibly hard to get to this day. and a lot of work ahead for sure. because making the landing and the rei flight easy is hard. >> reporter: astronauts are scheduled to install that new inflatable room this friday and you try out and make a travel baseball team like andrew did you got to be good. his family says the game has given him, a lot of confidence. yeah, it brings a lot of confidence. >> reporter: andrew just kind of does what he does. he's not asking for any praise. which is something considering what he's been through. >> i kidney transplant, i don't have any stomach muscles at all. 20, 23 surgeries something like that. um, hmm. i think that's the. >> reporter: andrew was born with eagle we are rhett syndrome national institution institutes of health many infants with the condition are either still born or die win a few weeks. those who survive often have other health problems andrew also has cystic fibrosis. >> when i was pregnant they toll me terminate the pregnancy he's not going to make it. >> reporter: andrew made it making it and thriving. just pass past the seven year anniversary of his kidney transplant. he even caught the eye of tom glavine had a recent event for kids who have organ transplant. >> they deal with it head on. and, you know, they don't let it get them down. >> reporter: there are challenges without stomach muscles he has trouble coughing which the body needs to do. he's always ban little on the small side. but hit a growth spurt recently. can't play contact sports like football. but andrew adapts and really insists it's no big deal. >> it's kind of easy for me now because i've been doing it for so long. >> his reality right now he's going all the way. who are we to stop him? i don't know what he's capable of. he's already proved everybody wrong right from the beginning. >> i think if anyone would doubt that kid i'm probably one of his biggest critics being a youth baseball coach when he comes out here and he shows us every day he can. >> my life is normal. to me it's normal. but everyone else it's not. >> andrew's first kidney transplant came from his grandmother his family expects him to need another transplant in about seven years. and his mom hopes she can donate. at that point andrew will no doubt be swinging for bigger goals and probably catching th them. justin felder, socks sports. amazing? >> good for him. >> love that. would you perhaps donate more if your boss gave you some extra cash every single pay day. >> may be. the owner of one oregon cafe hopes by paying his employees a little more they will pay it forward. it's been happening for the past few months at pips original doughnuts in northeast portland. employees get an extra 30 bucks to their paychecks in what they're boss called the freedom to give initiative that boss nate snell hopes that extra cash will encourage his workers to give without strapping them financially but he says he is leaves it up to them how to spend the extra money. >> that's why we call it the freedom and the freedom to give. it allows them to look for opportunities and to be able to recognize opportunities to help others without being forced to do something specific. >> early this morning after a long battle with cancer. good evening i'm lucy noland. >> i'm iain page. snider known just as many much for his work on the off the ice and we have live team coverage of the legacy he left behind. chris o'connell is live in cobbs creek with children who benefit from snider's youth hockey foundation but we start with howard eskin in the newsroom. >> ed snider brought hockey to physical as you heard back in 1967, but it's what he did in the years after that really made ed snider it really was more than doing everything he could to win a stanley cup. the flyers did win two in 1974 and '7 '75. when you met ed snider you never forgot. and so many were helped by ed snider. people called him mr. snider but he told me once, he never asked people to call him anything but ed. ed snider made it in the six hall of fames including hockey hall of fame and became friends and many times felt like a father to his players as well as the six children he already had of his own.
