Reporter lucy, a solemn night here in wilmington as the flag here at the delaware medical Examiner Office flies at half staff tonight in honor of Sergeant Steven floyd. His body remains here penning an autopsy. But in the meantime, questions tonight over his death and claims it could have been prevented. These young men been crying out like this for years and it just came to this point. Tony dunn says the prison takeover of the vaughn correctional facility was bound to happen. He should know. He spent nearly two years locked up at vaughn on charges of hindering an investigation. The investigation of his son Lionell Tucker who at this moment is behind the walls at vaughn serving a live sentence for the further degree murder of a wilmington man back 2011. In a mack mum security prison, you know, you going to lose your mine soon. You going to lose your mind. Its worser than a boiling pot. These stacks of letters are from his son who suffers from mental illness. For years, tucker has written about inmate overcrowding, understaffing and poor medical care and its not just disgruntled inmate saying that. The Corrections Officers union feels the same. Sergeant floyds death is due direct toll staffing issues that have been going on Witness Department of corrections. Reporter state prison Officials Say they are looking into staffing issues adding on any given day the state is down about 90 officers. When we are short staffed, we compensate with overtime. If we cant fill holes, the wardens have authority to cancel visits, cancel programs, and things like that to avoid any sort of safety issues. Reporter so far the medical examiner has not revealed sergeant floyds official cause of death. We have learned tonight that sergeant floyds Union Brothers and sisters have announced a candlelight vigil in his honor at smyrna park tomorrow night at 6 00 p. M. , lucy. Police say when 23yearold brooks grabbed her she grabbed his gun. She struggled it went off shot him in the arm. She escaped and ran straight to a nearby 7eleven to get help. She says in those terrifying moments she realized it was her or him. I wrestled with the gentleman there to save to keep to save my life. And i did. Police arrested brooks nearby. A Mother Holding her baby tight after they are reunited following a terrifying ordeal. The woman and her family own mckeon laundromat at eighth and mckeon in south filly. She was closing up for the night. Put her 19 month old child in the back car seat. The baby had was crying because it didnt have a certain toy. Police say the woman goes back into the store to get the toy and in 10 seconds a man jumped in and took off. After realizing flaw a baby in the back seat, the suspect stopped three blocks away on the 900 block of emily street and left the baby strapped in its car seat on the sidewalk. Chris santo is one of several people who saw the man leave the baby and rushed to help. She was carrying. I carried her and she was pointing and saying mommy, mom mommy. Police say the suspect kept going in the gray 2014 rav four. They say theyre working on getting Surveillance Video that shows the suspect taking the car and leaving the baby at the other location.
