Following a month long undercover drug investigation involving cocaine sales. We had information to believe that the bartender here at estia was selling drugs out of the back door. Sources say police made four undercover drug buys from the bartender. Today they made their final buy. He had on his Possession Cocaine and marijuana. Yesterday many celebrated the release of a man who spent 24 years in jail for a crime he did not commit. Even as his story turned for the better there are several still locked up for crimes they say they didnt commit. In fact Bill Anderson spoke to one of those men and his wife who is standing by his side hoping for the same vindication for goodness sake. Reporter Terrence Lewis served nearly 20 years of a live sentence for Second Degree murder. Its not a surprise that like many in jail he says he didnt do it. But in his case a federal judge and several witnesses actually agree that he didnt. So why is he still in jail . I had evidence that proved im innocent. I have already proved before federal judge that i am in fact innocent. Reporter i saw the document from a federal judge that indicates that after reviewing his case, she believes evidence points to the fact that he was not present and did not participate in the 1996 murder. Theres no words to describe. You know, the discussion the disappointment and heart ache. Reporter terrence wasnt the accused shooter but was convicted of being on the scene of a robbery that went bad. The only witness against him was an admitted crack user who was high at the time. Over the years it came clear his then attorney never spoke to other witnesses who have now come forward who say terrence wasnt there and even though federal courts agree, untimely appeals and procedural issues they keep him in jail. The facts that got you con vicked goes to show that youre not, n youre not guilty. However, being as though your attorney had dropped the ball, you still get the short end of the stick. Reporter 20 years in jail for a crime hes already said he didnt commit. But i still asked terrence is anything encouraging the first words out of his mouth, you should speak to my wife. I never doubt that he was going to come home. I just didnt know when. I can see the doors are opening and its light at the end of the tunnel. Reporter patti lewis stands by terrence unconditionally which is even more amazing when you find out she married her then friend after he received his live sentence. Because i loved him and i believed in him. Like and i just believed that he didnt do it. Reporter attorneys told me they believed terrence will eventually be free either through review of the next da, new witnesses that have also come forward or even clemency from the governor. But the process could take months or even years. Even so, patti has no regrets for standing by terrence. I actually will do it again if i had the chance i would honestly.
