blew up during class at a philadelphia high school and caused panic. thanks for joining us i'm iain page. >> i'm timmeney. lucy off. the bomb squad and fire department rushed to the scene. dave schratwieser is only reporter who spoke to the boy who owns the phone. you talked to his mom and she's not happy at all. neither one of them are very happy. 17-year-old told me when his iphone six fell off his desk in the middle of class this morning, and started to smoke heavily, he didn't know what to do. so he got up with his other classmates and left the classroom. the entire floor ended up being evacuated. west philadelphia high school was quite wednesday night after a day that had students and faculty buzzing when a student's iphone six started smoking badly after it fell off his desk as he sat in class wednesday morning. >> when i was going to pick it up i seen it smoking real real bad. i was like, ooh, i backed up. i kick it. >> reporter: khiry coats 17-year-old junior on the school's basketball team says his classroom and all the others on his floor were quickly evacuated. skyfox was overhead as the fire department arrived on scene. minutes later the philadelphia bomb squad showed up as a >> i was just scared. i didn't know what to do. >> i got a phone call this morning saying that, you know, his phone had blew up. i just was just thinking about him and his safety and the school want was going on. >> reporter: his mom was shocked when she got a phone call from school officials explaining what happend. she's just happy he wasn't injured and also thankful no one else got hurt. >> this could have happened, you know, inside the home anywhere, the family could have been, you know, it just could have happened anywhere in our household and it could have been on fire. >> reporter: he says firefighters and the bomb squad opened up the phone and checked it out before returning it to him. he's now planning a trip to the apple store in center city. he and his mom hope apple will replace the phone. >> i charge my phone every night. never had this problem. >> through a recall or whatever because somebody could have died. >> you're out of the communication for few days. yeah. >> reporter: the girls are calling that's not good, right? your friends calling, that's not good. >> nah. >> reporter: not good for 17-year-old, not not to have a phone. now the fire department and bomb squad gave the all clear after about 45 minutes here at west philly high. students went back to class. i spoke to a manager at the apple store in center city tonight. he referred me to corporate spokesperson. that spokesperson says the company is just finding out about this and will look into it. iain? >> all right, dave, thanks. tense moments in kingsessing tonight philadelphia police officer fires his weapon this all start the around 5:30 officers say a man tried to drag a woman out of a mini van. cops say the driver punched that van in reverse and when they approach the car an officer was hit and dragged several feet. that officer fired his gun investigators found the van but they are still looking for the driver and the woman. a delaware county school aid is under arrest tonight charged with bringing a gun to school he's accused of having the gun and ammo at school in upper darby. parents and students are rattled to say the least. our shawnette wilson is following this investigation tonight. she's life at the upper darby police station. shawnette. >> reporter: well, police say dominic jordan has a concealed weapons permit and he is certified to be a security guard. but tonight, he is in jail for bringing a gun on to school property. >> he was sitting at the same table as me. now that i think of it it's really scary. >> reporter: mia is eighth grader at drexel hill middle school. 32-year-old dominic jordan a private care assistant brought a gun and ammunition this morning. mia' grandmother can't believe it. >> you just feel like your kids are supposed to be safe. >> reporter: upper darby police say it happened around 12:30 this afternoon. a teacher found bullet in bathroom and told the principal who called police. when they got there, jordan came to the office asking if cops were there about the bullet. police asked him if he had a gun. he said no but showed them a clip with 12 rounds in it. oversimpled this backpack and schuylkill center for environmental education. his name is mike wyler backer he says hold on here the coyotes we're seeing in the philadelphia area may be unlike any other coyotes scene before. they are not your run of the mill coyotes and in fact he says they are not even called coyotes there's a new name for this creature. we are going to hear from him. we're going to talk about what that new oregon avenue carrying a gas can. police say just minutes later he set on fire two cars parked nearby. this happened early in the morning of march 13th. we spoke with joe who's new 2017 lincoln mkz was torched. >> saw the car was engulfed in flames and my car was in front of it and they said the fire had jumped from one car to the oth other. >> it's not something you expect to find, you know, sunday night when you went to bed and to come out see your new car is now melted into the street. >> no it's not. after the arson the surveillance video shows the guy in the hoodie running back passed the gas station and chucking the gas can on on top of a garage. one more shot as he made his get away. if you know him call police. maintenance man will spend the rest of his life in jail in connection with the rape and death of a drexel university graduate student. 58-year-old james harris was convicted today in a non-jury trial. prosecutors say that harris killed 27-year-old jasmine wright back in july of 2015. he had initially denied he was responsible but he did wave his right to jury trial in exchange for prosecutors not to seeking the death penalty. he maintained his innocence right up until the moment of his sentencing today. and says his relationship with wright was consensual. the man who found his wife and young son stabbe to death in mape pill shady, new jersey has the okay to leave the country for their funerals. police say the man has not been charged in the crime. the bodies of 38 year-year-old woman and her son are expected to be sent back to >> they're stealing water from the fire hydrants women caught them taking water. i saw them. >> reporter: that's right. he says they're ripping off water rate pairs by tapping the hydrants. we never saw this crew do that. but we sit and wait and weight watch the others until mid morning march 9th. >> hooking up to the hydrant. >> reporter: it's the operator of hands car wash. he's hitting the hydrant along a busy juniata intersection right smack in front of a beer distributorship. he checks his connection and latches his tools to the top of the hydrant. >> he's now turning the water on. >> reporter: as the water sprays. for just over six minutes, he pumps water into his tank while a small stream flows below. a city fire official believes hundreds of gallons are flowing in. he walks away. returns and shuts it all down as the hose goes slack. wip minutes, he's gone. >> there he goes. >> reporter: you think that he in some ways is putting this community in danger. >> most definitely. >> reporter: debbie mc carty the head of water department is frustrated she says this guy cracked a special locked hydrant designed to defeat these. >> so this dude got a wrench. >> um-hmm. >> he's got a pair of pliers and he's able to defeat it? >> that's right. unfortunately. >> reporter: mc carty says the big issue here is not cost but safety. even life and death. >> he can damage the hydrant. so we won't find out until the fire department goes to fight a fire, and they try to get on that hydrant it doesn't work. that just delays them fighting that fire. >> reporter: she says, city water costs less than a penny a gallon. but the threat to the drinking supply is steep because water from his tank could be sucked back in to the system. >> you don't want to be drinking the water out of his tank and his van per se. >> reporter: he toll his name is lewis and he claims he fills his tank at home. >> you go to jail for that. >> reporter: do you? >> yeah. >> reporter: if you get it from a hydrant. >> yeah. >> reporter: well that's where you get it. >> i get it from my house. >> reporter: i saw you get it from the hydrant. you. >> never saw me get it from the hydrant. >> reporter: that hydrant right there. >> fox 29 obtained the water bill from the address where he says he lives. and where his van was parked. mc carty says, not only is the water usage too low. the account is delinquent by hundreds of dollars. and the city could not find a required commercial activity license and tax id in the name of hand's car wash. >> i never got no water. >> reporter: yeah did you. you were there for seven minutes, six, seven minutes. watch. watch what's going to happen. that's your hook up, right? >> yeah. >> reporter: after seeing himself, louis at first said he was using the hydrant to defrost his equipment but seemed to change his story when we told him we'd seen him on unseasonably warm day. >> what about the ninth of march when i saw you? what were you doing a man convicted of domestic abuse. joshua hill spent three days behind bars but now he has to carry this sign outside the courthouse that reads, this is the face of domestic abuse. hill was found guilty for probation violation that stemmed from assault on female charge. legal experts say sometimes public shaming is the best answer for people to learn their lesson. >> the idea is if we shame raccoons, possum, rabbit, mice and berries the good news, dawn, they do not eat people. so if you happen to see one just kind of give it did the its distance check it out and recognize you're seeing a very rare site. >> all right. that's a relief, thanks, brad. ♪ you're about to meet boy bullied so badly he went cross eyed and joyce it happened to this teen once and now it happened again. >> reporter: iain, it has happened again and this is so unbelievably disgusting. he may need another surgery. after bullies attacked him yet again. take look. this is what 14-year-old dustin looked like last fall. after an older kid body slammed him to the ground. doctors near houston, texas had to do surgery to fix his eyes. two weeks later, dustin' eyes were back to normal until last friday when an upper classman ambushed him on the bus hitting him right in the head. dustin's sister noticed his eyes were starting to cross again. >> i hope he gets punished properly. i don't wish people the worse. >> i wanted to cry. it broke my heart. all this again. it was hard to watch him go through it the first time. >> his mom says the school is investigating but that bully has not been back on the bus since attacked dustin. school district says that they can't even comment on any kind of discipline. now diss tin's doctors say that there's a chance that his eye could correct itself over time but, iain, enough is enough. >> absolutely, joyce. someone hopefully will step in and help this kid. joyce, thank you. ♪ there's possibly no darker moment than finding out that a child is seriously ill. but each day our bill anderson tries to find hope even in the worse of circumstances. he spoke to family who found out their sick child has more support than they can ever have imagined on social media of all places for goodness sake. ♪ >> she's not feeling well, and, um, we taking her to the hospital. >> what do you do when serious illness strikes your family and you're hundreds of miles away. >> i just wanted her to know we're all the way in philly but you have our support. we're there. we love you. >> reporter: that's what happened to northeast philadelphia woman who found out from a phone call that her two-year-old niece had cancer. >> oh, wow. catherine's niece honesty lives in north carolina. she's known as an energetic happy child who her mother described on social media as all i ever wanted in one little package. so when she was suddenly diagnosed with stage four canc cancer, family in philadelphia wanted to find a way to surround her with love even if they couldn't be there. >> i googled some cancer quotes, and the one that is on the collage i made it says when child has cancer everyone that loves them has it too. then i added the i am honesty. >> i am honesty started off as a hash tag. each time it was posted and shared it was meant to send love and prayers from wherever people were and it began to spread fa fast. >> i was so surprised. everybody, my facebook was going availing day long and still going off to this minute. >> she'll catch fever every now and then. >> message made it to north carolina where her mother precious video chatted with me. she continues to struggle dealing with the shock of her daughter going from the little girl always eager to help someone else to the child fighting for her life. ♪ >> as some people say she will leave a footprint in your heart. she speaks complete sentences teaches kids at her daycare how to use the potty. >> she's also two years old. little girl who was in surgery while her mom chatted with me from the hospital room. so her mother is appreciative and moved each time she sees the hash tag i am honesty pop up on her phone. >> it's been shared a lot. like i never thought it would go this far. >> there is a good fund me account set up for expenses. but precious seemed much more focused on how appreciative she was of the love shown to her baby. >> prayers do help so i really do appreciate it. >> being supportive is an easy thing to do. this may not be your situation or your struggle but we have all been through something. something where we would like somebody to have our back to support us so please join me and wrapping this little girl in a circle of love and saying i am honesty for goodness sake. i'm bill anderson. >> ♪ done deal. oprah and the man behind empire working together. kathy the sun finally came out today. >> oh, yeah. we only have one more day before it rains and i mean downpours. >> and check your pocket and your purse you left something behind in your uber ride. ♪ if you're looking frien. through the streets of washington, d.c. this morning. a capitol police spokeswoman says officers tried stop an erratic and aggressive driver near the botanic gardens at about 9:30 the driver made u-turn and crashed into a police cruiser after short chase officers stopped the woman while trying to arrest the driver an officer fired their weapon. fortunately no one was hurt and that woman is under arrest. first daughter ivanka trump will become an official federal and government employee. she's not going to get paid for her role but she'll serve as an adviser to the president. previously she planned to be informal adviser to her father and keep an office in the west wing. but she decided to make her role official after concerns she wouldn't be required to comply with employee ethics huge problem across the country and here in our area. the governor joined the president today for listening session on drug abuse. epidemic is something personal for governor christie who has dedicated his final year as new jersey's governor to addressing the crisis. the new role is not paid position for governor christie and it won't affect his duties as governor of new jersey. in your degrees with winds out of the north still at 14 miles an hour. temperatures ranging from the 30s in the poconos to the 50s along the i-95 corridor. it's 49 in millville. 46 in trenton and 47 in reading and lancaster. ultimate doppler showing the counter clockwise swirl right here over kansas that's a strong area of low pressure that will bring severe weather through the midwest and the tennessee valley during the day tomorrow. we stay on the warm side of the storm and really the wet side of the storm. no severe weather expecte expec. just drenching downpours by friday morning. so as we go hour by hour you can see friday morning spotty showers. the heavy rain moves in during the morning hours. by noon it should be heavy at times. that will be the case through the afternoon along the i-95 corridor. during the evening rush and right into the nighttime hours. if you're going out please expect some heavy rain through the evening and the late night hours for your friday and then our new model sweeping it out fairly quickly. so by saturday, just some overcast in the morning maybe a few lingering sprinkles. but it will stay mostly cloudy day. when we look at the future rain totals about one to 2-inches of rain spread across most of the delaware valley with about one and a half in philadelphia and it's been looking like that for the past couple of days with consistent qpf
