snatch her rings right off her hands. she talked to fox 29 about how she fought back. ♪ >> we begin with breaking news in germantown. a woman found tied up in a bathroom after a hostage situation comes to an end good evening, i'm lucy nolan. >> i'm iain page. police were called to the house at green street and queen lane earlier tonight that's where fox 29's bruce gordon is life. bruce? >> reporter: iain, the usual quiet of this the 100 block of queen lane was shattered around dinnertime by a barricaded man and his alleged hostage. we're told the 40 year old man and 27 year old woman who lived in the apartment right behind me had been a couple at least they were until tonight. 14th district police called here just after 6:30 on a report of a hostage situation. >> they knock on the door. a male refused to an the door and he shouted at police if you come through the door, i'm going to shoot at police. >> reporter: neighbors on queen lane saw it all go down. >> we were sitting out here and we saw the police go in, and then all of a sudden we saw them runninrunning out with their gus drawn. and they were ducking behind cars and they told us to go in the house. >> reporter: swat team was called and in the man quickly surrendered. police entered the apartment to check for that hostage and found a 27 year old woman first floor bathroom. she was tied up. her wrists were bound. she was gagged. she had a large piece of cloth stuffed in her mouth. she was transported to einstein hospital by medics to be treated for some bruises to her wrists and she is also being checked out by doctors she's claiming she was sexually assaulted numerous times today. >> reporter: a friend of the woman saw her emerge from the apartment with police. >> i said you all right? she said no. he had me tied up in the bathroom. >> reporter: how did she took look. >> bad. >> it isn't the first time. >> reporter: physical altercations before. >> all the time, yeah. more than twice. >> reporter: this was troubled relationship they had. >> real troubled. >> reporter: police have now secured that apartment building when they went in earlier to look for the woman they noticed in plane sight what appeared to be box of ammunition. they now await a search warrant so they can go in and take a look around for the possibility of weapons. that 40 year old man is in police custody at this hour. facing the possibility of numerous criminal charges. the 27 year old woman is former partner is at the hospital once she's been checked out she'll be questioned by special victims unit. an evening of drama and violence here on queen lane. lucy? >> gordon it is a busy night. the news breaking newer houston texas deadly shooting has left six people dead including a child. this is happening right now in spring just north of houston. deputees say they have the gunman cornered right now. that happened after a chase. they say it started with some type of domestic dispute. of course we're keeping an eye on this and bring updates as the situation develops. a developing story in delaware county tonight. a mansion on the mainline goes up in flames. magnificent home that looked like a castle. neighbors say the owner built the house himself. fox 29's drew dickman is live in wayne, delaware county tonight with the story. drew? >> reporter: iain, despite the noise of the trucks behind me it's a lot quieter out here than it was earlier. they're continue to go focus on this driveway area where it's believed in general that's where the fire may have started. there's a lot of work still to be done including what caused this fire to erupt. skyfox hi through over the 200 block of wyndham lane as flames ripped through this wayne mansion. investigators say the owner was working on his car around 4:15 when it caught fire. then spread from the garage area to the house. on lookers watched in despair. >> so sad 'cause he built it with his own hands entirely. and so seeing it burn like that it's pretty sad. >> reporter: firefighters worked tireless toll control the flames. but more erupted from the hot spots. the other end of the house also has significant smoke damage. radnor's fire investigator says cruise weren't looking about how this was a multi million dollars mansion while trying to extinguish the fire. >> i don't think too much one home is the same as another to me in radnor township or any other place. you respect or at least i do the smallest home in radnor as much as the biggest home. >> reporter: only the home own are in was hurt suffering minor burn but the summer heat made the battle draining for firefighters much neighbors say the owner is a mason and does stone work on the mainline. they feel terrible that something he worked on for years now looks like this. >> i just can't imagine if that ever happened to someone. it's just horrible. we need to support them and help them as much as we can as a community. >> reporter: investigators are expected to wrap up here tonight in a little bit and come back tomorrow morning to continue to look through the debris and find that cause of what started this fire. again, the owner was taken to crozer chester medical center but he's expected to be okay. lucy? >> all right. drew another round of storms tonight. but they're finally moving on ought for now. chief meteorologist scott williams is here with what we can expect through the night. scott what are you seeing? right now lucy most of the activity widely scattered has begun to diminish across our area. ultimate doppler showing you that we're dry in philadelphia and for most of the area for that matter. you can see down the shore a few weakening showers and thunderstorms. nothing severe. that severe thunderstorm watch has ended. we have a few leftover showers right now moving away from atlantic city and cape may. but moving into ocean county right now, around brick, also, moving toward the barnegat light surf city area watching for some of that shower and thunderstorm activity. also, back toward sections of carbon and monroe. but nothing is severe. thankfully. still pretty muggy low 80s right now. humidity right now at 67%. so right now we have a few pockets of shower's. once again they're widely scattered across the region. overnight partly cloudy a few left over showers. coming up vial that forecast for wake up weather a 7700 block of large street. the tree is now leaning against wires clearly never good. and we have no word when crews will be out there to take the down. >> police need your help to identify a suspect in an assault on a subway platform. it happened at the broad and susquehanna station and was caught on camera. a woman was waiting for her train when a man sat next to her. as the train approached the suspect indecently assaulted her. both boarded separate cars and left. if you know something that might help catch the man please call philadelphia police. this new castle man is accused of hiding 16 bags of heroin in his child's diaper. police say 25 year old michael pen was caught on surveillance video shoplifting from a verizon store when they went to arrest him he was carrying two of his children. eight month old and a five year old. that's when investigators say pen stuffed the heroin into the baby's pants. pen is out on bail his kids were turned over to his grandmother. >> new developments tonight in the deadly southwest philadelphia fire. the families of the four children who died understandably want to know how it began. fox 29's dave schratwieser is at the scene where people are asking who if anyone will be held responsible. >> reporter: emotions are still running high on gesner street as this neighborhood searches for answers in the wake of saturday's deadly fire that took the lives of four children, injured several and left dozens homeless. >> why the kids burn into ashes? >> reporter: as neighbors march to city hall fox 29 was there as detectives and fire investigators returned to the fire scene. they're still trying to pin down the cause. they went door to door speaking with neighbors as they look into reports that fireworks may have ignite add couch on the front porch where the blaze began. >> i want some answers. i want to know if it's a murder. i want to know if it's an incident. ooh want to know if somebody did it intentionally. >> reporter: this woman what happens answers, too. her sister and niece were badly injured in the inferno that engulfed nine homes. >> i want to know what started the fire. why people were sleeping 2:00 o'clock in the night and then the house caught on fire. >> i wake i was way with nothing. >> patrick left the meeting frustrated and in tears still searching for answers in the death of his two young sons and two other children in saturday's three harm blaze on gesner street. >> i want to know who, why, wh when. >> four yeared patrick and his three week old taj perished in the fire that swept through nine homes in matter of minutes. he wants to know what touched off the deadly blaze and should someone be held responsible? >> i want to see -- i want to pressure charges and see them, you know, pay for the thing that they did. >> reporter: dave schratwieser, fox 29 news. >> the liberian ambassador to the united states met with the city council today and the families of the children killed in that fire. he joined a two hour meeting at city hall this morning organized by councilman kenyata johnson. the ambassador along with the families want to know what went wrong and more importantly if this tragedy could have been prevented. >> all the families needed was for the city and mayor say we are sorry, we're going to look into this thing. >> the ambassador says he intends to follow the investigation very closely. he also plans to follow up with the fire department in the coming days and weeks. president obama is in texas pushing his call for congress to approve nearly $4 billion to fight the immigration crisis. under heavy criticism for not going to the border, president obama attended a meeting local leaders one of his most ardent critics texas governor rick perry although they did not sit next to each other the u.s. is facing a surge of illegal immigrants from central america. the president calls it an urgent humanitarian situation. >> two men storm into a 91 year old woman's home and rip the rings right off of her fingers. but she fights back and you're going to hear from her next. and a teenaged girl disappears without a trace and her family local man says s ♪ >> this man under arrest accused of exposing himself to employees at a dental office. delaware state police say gregory, was walking around his backyard naked just before 8:00 yesterday morning. so who cares if he was in his open backyard. the problem is he was apparently in clear view of all the folks at the dental office and so prosecutors have charged him with lewd behavior and indecent exposure. >> a 91 year old woman jumped by two crooks in her own cobbs creek home is talking to fox 29. >> tonight police are still trying to find those two attackers. fox 29's dave kinchen is live at southwest detectives. dave, you spoke to the victim. >> reporter: that's right. that victim is very shaken. she says she has no idea how these thieves got into her house because it was locked. she says, she put up a little bit of a fight even biting one of them as she was punched twice. we're not identifying her to protect her identity, but you'll be shocked by her story. only fox 29 was there as a 91 year old woman left mercy hospital in southwest philadelphia hours after being socked in the face and robbed. i walk with her as she recalled the terrifying ordeal that happened in her cobbs creek home of at least 50 years. >> oh he, i was very scared and shook up. because this was a strange experience. >> reporter: we are not identifying the victim. she's afraid her attackers may return. police say the two crooks broke into the carpenter street house through the back and raided the place just as the victim came home. >> i got hit in the mouth. and then they put something over my head so i couldn't see their face. and they grabbed my two hangs and took my rings. >> reporter: pulling so hard her hand had to be bandaged up. police say the suspects then bailed through the back alleyway with other stolen items. >> carrying a suitcase which has a tv inside. >> reporter: investigators believe the suspects are from the neighborhood and neighbors are pulling together. >> we try to look out for all the elderly people in the neighborhood try to keep the neighborhood safe. >> reporter: meanwhile the victim has some words for her attackers. >> whoever did it, i hope they know that they did something wrong and sooner or later something might happen to them. >> reporter: well police have released to us what they have as far as suspect descriptions. they say they're looking twenty four two black men between 18 and 21 years old one was wearing a black and white shirt with brown pants. the other had on a long gray sweatshirt and was wearing dark pants. if you have any information, give philadelphia police a call. lucy. >> my part goes out to that woman. thank you very much, dave. funding for the philadelphia school district could go up in smoke. the pennsylvania state senate has passed a budget sent by the house but senators amended the cigarette tax portion of the legislation. the amendment would end the tax plan to fund the city's cash strapped schools after five years. so now it all heads back to the house for approval before going to governor corbett who has said he would sign it. here's the problem. the house is on summer break so representatives won't vote until this fall. philadelphia school superintendent william hite has released this statement quoting here "with schools scheduled to open in less than two months, it is crucial that we secure the needed funding to support our students and schools. there is no clear timetable for house consideration on this amended bill nor any guarantee of final passage. we implore the house and senate to come to agreement immediately on cigarette tax legislation that does not include a sunset provision. here at fox 29 we will keep you posted on what happens. >> have you pulled a tick off yourself, your child or your pet yet? because lyme disease is once again exploding in our ar area. there are more lyme disease cases in pennsylvania than anywhere else in the country. and new jersey is third. fox 29's karen hepp has the latest on this growing epidemic. >> reporter: your kids are at camp or having picnic. you know the tick dangers walking in the tall grass, hiking in the woods. but the lyme disease epidemic is growing so rapidly here, pennsylvania is now number one for the most cases in the whole country. and new jersey is right behind at number three. so you really don't have to do too much at all in order to get lyme disease. >> i have an aunt that had it once. she is not on ought doors person. she goes from her house to her car in medford, new jersey. and she the one that got it. >> reporter: it's so bad pennsylvania just create add task force last month to combat the problem. you know deer ticks are tiny tiny and very hard to see. you know to look for bulls eye you may or may not get but even the most seasoned professionals can be surprised by it. >> so this is my boy and he had just gotten a bath. >> our own dr. mike cirigliano just found a lime rash on his own son. >> low and behold he gets a bath this past weekend, and my wife says, oh, he's got a rash i think he might have eczema. i took a picture and you know what this is? that is the eric mia rash of lyme disease. >> the doctor started an antibiotic right away. experts say it's critical to treat quickly before there are bigger problems. >> jill fisher knows the dangers and takes precautions like most of us. some of the time. >> we use a deet spray. >> we follow the other guidelines of light clothing and wear their sock up. again that's camping not really out on the play ground. >> we have woods and wooded area in our backyard. so it's kind of a concern. we always use insect repellant but when we come out i tend to be lax. >> playground most kids don't wear long pants and sleeves. it's just not realistic on 90-degree days but dr. mike says, insect repellant clothes can help and nightly checks are a must. >> what i plan on doing is if they're out in a wooded everyone. wake up weather for thursday morning looking at upper 60s, low 70s in the city. a mixture of sun and clouds much it will be a mild start out there. winds out of the west five to 10 miles per hour. right now as far as conditions across the region we are looking at a few leftover showers and thunderstorms most of the action is out into the open waters of the atlantic. we'll zoom in a little close sr. right now. ing see around brick also just north of seaside heights, also, around barnegat light, surf city watching a pretty moderate shower and thunderstorm right now as it continues to pull aw away. also, toward the lehigh valley the pocono mountains you can see around east penn, poke, jim thorp good evening watching some of that activity as it continues to lift on off to the east. it's not severe. coming up we'll talk about some drier air that will be moving in behind this front that has the atmosphere a little warm, a little unstable right now. plus, we'll preview that weekend fierce whoever took her has forced her into the sex trade. 717 year old tracy dean disappeared after sending her boyfriend a text message saying she was involved in something she believed she couldn't get out of and "they were going to kill you and my family coat" she left a message in her journal saying "if you find me i'll be all used up or dead. police are expanding the search for her tonight while her family is pleading for her return home. >> a judge gave him probation and ordered that he pay $80,000 restitution. this stems from an egg throwing incident in california last january that damaged a neighbor's home. his neighbors video taped beiber throwing the eggs but this isn't the first pops toes first run in with the law. he face toss other cases in florida and toronto. >> now a long overdue home coming. >> isn't that the truth. one that two soldiers will never forget. soldiers are brothers separated as children and both are now back home after serving in the military overseas. louis and raul, were only toddlers when their parents separated and each parent took one kid. then 37 years past. eventually each learned the other was a soldier and both were serving in major development in a delaware county hit-and-run. police arrest a young couple and charge them with a crime. an investigators say the two went to great lengths to try and cover up their track. it happened just before 11:00 o'clock on april 21st along chester pike in ridley park. >> the hit-and-run seriously injured 18 year old christopher brook. 25 year old adrian mc ray was behind the wheel of a forward for f150 when it happened. they say her 31 year old boyfriend tie wind shame her helped cover up the crime by lying to police and ultimately selling the truck. >> it disturbs me to think that an individual can do harm to another individual, leave them on the side of the road to die and not provide any assistance at all and go through the ex tents they did to cover this up. >> the victim lost his leg below the right knee and is still recovering from all of his injuries. the couple are both facing numerous charges. a man from yeadon is under arrest accused of breaking into a woman's home in upper darby township. 21 year old tyrell booker is charged with the april break in at a home on the 7200 block of guilford road. a teenager says she was sleeping in her living room and woke up around 3am to find him standing over her. she ran him off and noticed a gap in his teeth that. helped her pick him out of a police lineup. investigators say four other similar cases were reported in the weeks to follow and in one case a woman was groped. >> you're in the privacy of your home. your home is your castle, and this bum comes in and whatever he was going to do, he didn't do, but, again, we as a community are very very fortunate none of these women got hurt or sexually assaulted. police say booker was out on parole after being jailed for burglary. he was just released for that in december. no word yet on if any charges in any of the other cases will be filed. >> it was coined in the '90's to put a name to the mind set of those who behaved badly because they feel entitled privileged or powerful. >> but using so-called affluenza like a disease to get out of a prison time for violent crimes? our joyce evans looks at that growing controversy. ♪ >> i was 20 years old making 300, 400 grand a year or whatever. >> reporter: mark recounting his recent life in the fast lane. >> i just thought i was untouchable. >> reporter: fast and loose. >> i didn't go to school. i'm so much smarter than everyone. >> reporter: he was on his poker game professionally but his personal life fueled by alcohol and drugs. >> i kind of just set up my own map of what is important and what isn't and i said, i have more money than these people i'm better than them. >> reporter: he was miserable, mean and a menace. >> i was drunk driving probably 100 times in my life. i could have very easily killed someone. lucky i never did. >> reporter: his world and he couldn't see anything wrong with it. at that time. >> look i just did not care. i don't -- i really don't know what it is. just being a teenager. >> reporter: that's why he says he gets the 16 year old texas teen at the center of a fire storm of outrage and debate over the so-called affluenza legal defense. >> i mean, it sounds kind of crazy but i sympathize with him. >> reporter: mark does not agree with the doctor's claim that the teen suffered affluenza because his wealthy parents coddled him in a sense of irresponsibility should have been used to help get him out of any prison time. his alcohol blood level was three times the legal limit in a horrific dui case that killed four people and injured others. >> it just keeps getting worse. >> at this point in time it is not a recognized disease process. >> reporter: according to mainline therapist karen abrams, people who claim affluenza likely have bigger issues than just being spoiled or arrogant. problems that need treatment. >> not to be offered to justify illegal, immoral or unethical behavior. >> they don't have the same level of fear because they their their money can maybe get them out of a bad situation. >> it's the classic have your cake and eat it too. >> reporter: reaction from a lawyer of one of the young survivors of that deadly crash. he's fighting to use that same affluenza diagnosis against ethan couch and his family seeking damages in civil suits. >> geno see is out bott physical and there's no way to get it back in. >> it's a problem in our society not everybody going to the table with the same set of facts will end up with the same results. >> reporter: we cannot find any cases around here where affluenza was actually used as a defense strategy in court. what we did find some cases that set off controversy after a well connected convict did not go to prison. and there's already affluenza buzz surrounding some cases that are still heading to court. >> what may work in another state, sometime -- some type of excuse i doubt very much is going to work around here. >> reporter: in fact, montgomery county's first assistant da kevin steal point to do several cases where he says fame, fortune, power and social status may have brought the court down harder. >> because they've had many advantages and have chosen to go down that path. >> reporter: he says for some cases where they don't throw the book at a defendant wealthy or not there are a number of programs that offer justice for the victims and provide punishment for offenders while hopefully changing negative behaviors. >> trying to keep people from being -- keeping people from doing it again. report roar mark says he'd benefited from similar programs after his dui arrest. but that the punishment didn't matter. that he had to change from win. in addition to kicking the drugs and booze. >> it's not like i was trying to be good or anything. i was just trying to feel better. the way to do that is to be good to people. >> reporter: he did it with the love of his parents, supporting him but never codling. the love of a good woman and a couple of cute cats. dr. abrams says, she's found it's necessary for some of her patients to break what could be a vicious cycle. >> the question is for the people who get off, how testify director says the man was visiting his son when he somehow ended up inside a room that no one was using. and that steal door closed behind him trapping him for more than 30 hours. >> fortunately, had the foresight to, you know, see the sprinkler head and break it off and so the room began to flood. chicago fire department was alerted very early monday morning. and fortunately, was able get him out of that room. >> that's fortunate. also he had to get some water. he had been there for 30 hours. officials now want to know why no one noticed the man hadn't check out. >> customers in a liquor store in massachusetts got quite a scare when a deer came charging through the window. one man decided to make a run for it dropping his beer and taking off for the door. the deer went >> she took her big plans and high hopes to the new tampa home depot where wallly met two guardian angels wearing orange aprons instead of wing. >> few pieces like this like a square piece with -- put velcro and make spots where the dog can sit. >> the dog got really excited and was spinning around. >> the pair spent two hours making wally a wheelchair. >> they even covered the costs. >> we strive to see the pride on their faces and have them -- sometimes emotional connection even for us. >> reporter: and with that, wally was off. two weeks later -- >> he slowly regaining strength. thanks in part to the kindness and compassion of complete strangers. >> we live in time where pretty are people self center and pretty greedy and it's all about profits and, you know, this was just outstanding. widely scattered showers and storms. for the overnight we'll call it partly cloudy. there could be a leftover shower across the area, and then for your thursday, the storm chances start to fade away. not quite as humid or as hot. 89 degrees was the high temperature today. the normal this time of year is 87. look at the record in 1936 it was 103 degrees. right now we have a pair of sevens in millville. mid 70s in lancaster as well as reading. 67 degrees right now in the pocono mountains. so the dew point temperatures still above 60 degrees and any time we have them above 60 it's going to feel kind of sticky and steamy stepping outdoors. so we're watching this frontal boundary out ahead of it unsettled stormy, warm and humid. behind it we're looking at a wind shift, drier air will start to head toward our area over the neck several days. so for the overnight there could be a leftover shower across the area. for thursday, it's a mixture of sun and clouds. during the heat of the day especially in south jersey, sections of delaware. there could be a stray or isolated shower or thunderstorm not anticipating severe weather across our area tomorrow and really just a small chance for showers and storms. upper 60s, low 70s to night. left over spotty storm otherwise stays warm and muggy. 87 degrees for the high temperature tomorrow. once again there could be an ice layed shower, but looking pretty good. not as humid as we move into your thursday as well as friday. 85 for the high temperature so a nice way to close out a very warm and unsettled work week. moving into the upcoming weekend, mid 80s on saturday. not as humid. the humidity increases for the second half of the weekend with a pop-up shower or storm. better chances as we move into monday and tuesday of next week. so if you're doing any outdoor events friday, the upcoming weekend, not looking too bad. but sunday there could be pop up shower that could interfere with your plans but it's not a widespread
