"hillary clinton" and "donald trump" faced-off in their first presidential debate. the candidates touched on everything from jobs..to race -- and how to heal the divide. it was a heated, fierce debate in front of a superbowl sized television audience. both candidates in almost a dead heat in the polls coming into the debate. so the stakes were high at hofstra university. and both came ready to attack. they still have two more debates. they face-off again is less than two weeks...on october 9th. meanwhile, the first and only vice presidential debate is next tuesday. coming up at 5:30, we're talking about this more with "doug luzader" who and the democratic vice presidential candidate spent the day in florida. during an event in lakeland yesterday afternoon... kaine talked about hillary clinton's passions. he listed her work for children's insurance... empowering families and helping september 11th victims. if you drive across the howard frankland bridge in the morning or evening you know traffic can be a nightmare... and lawmakers may be making congestion even worse. a proposal the lanes to create a toll lane. it could speed up your commute, but it won't be cheap. fox13's "shayla reaves" is on the story this morning. shayla what is thanks, shayla. as the baseball world continues to mourn the loss of "jose fernandez"... his marlins teammates honored him his marlins team honored him by wearing the number 16 in their game against the mets. it was their first game since his death. to multiple reports, the marlins are considering retiring fernandez's number. after their win, the team gathered around the pitchers mound to pray. they all then decided to all leave their hats behind. fernandez was killed over the weekend during a boating accident. he graduated from tampa's alonso high school. the school will hold a candlelight vigil for him tomorrow night, at their baseball field. we should get an update today on a movie theater murder case. "curtis reaves" shot and theater in wesley chapel back in 2013. the confrontation allegedly started after oulson began using his cell phone. reaves says he felt threatened after oulson threw the phone at him. reaves is a retired tampa police captain. today's hearing should reveal more details about reaves' "stand your ground" hearing. that's expected to start next february. there is a boil water notice in place for most of wauchula this morning. city leaders say crews working to put in storm drains, broke a water main yesterday. the water was out for most of monday. advisory will stay in effect until at least tomorrow afternoon. new sad details this morning about the death of bay area radio host dave mckay. the medical examiner says he overdosed on cocaine. mckay was found dead in his st. pete apartment in august. the report also shows alcohol and cardiovascular disease were a factor in his death. he was a longtime radio host for 99-point-5 w-q-y-k. someone in clearwater stole hundreds of dollars worth of jewelry from a non- profit that helps less fortunate girls have special "belle of the ball" provides girls who need them with dresses and jewelry for school dances, when their parents just can't afford it. but friday, someone broke through the glass door of their boutique and stole nearly 500-dollars worth of jewelry. unlike the dresses which are donated, the jewelry is purchased by the organization with their limited budget. the organization's next shopping day is saturday. they're hoping to be able to purchase more accessories, but need the public's help. you can donate through their website, belle of the ball project-dot-com. later this morning, governor "rick scott" will be in polk county touring the mosaic fertilizer plant. ahead of his visit, he is ordering the department of report possible pollution within 24 hours. people who live around that plant are upset, because it took mosaic three weeks to tell them that a sinkhole had opened causing millions of gallons of contaminated water to flow into the aquifer. scott will tour the facility starting at 11:30 this morning. how about a little positive news on this tuesday morning? one of lowry park zoo's newest residents, now has a name. last week they announced their southern white rhino "kidogo" had given birth to a new female calf. well, now we know her name. her name is the name means loved. and we know she will be very loved by all the people who visit her at the zoo. and a bizarre story this morning courtesy of the sarasota county sheriff's office. they were driving down the road when they saw a v-w with a "maltese mom" sign while this could have been really bad... the deputies kept their cool. when they pulled the car over they found a dead gator in the back of the boat with superman duct tape around its snout. before you get worried, the gator was hunted legally. "doug luzader" joins us live from hofstra university in new york good morning doug!--q- so what's your take on last night? ---q- how'd hilla --q- what does this mean for the election? and check this out. before last night's big debate.... georgetown cupcakes posted this picture online. it's a picture of the two candidates made completely out of cupcakes. and this wasn't just printing out a picture and sticking it on a cupcake. they hand iced all the cupcakes so it formed a great big edible picture of trump and clinton! florida. a man sets his wife on fire. it happened in the parking lot of her job in plantation. when "heilyn pages" got to work 47-year-old "noel garcia" was waiting for her. the two got into a fight then garcia threw flammable liquid on her and set her on fire. he then fled. she is currently stable. he was caught are arrested by police a few hours later. they're still looking into a motive for the attack. police have named the man "deryke dennard" shot and killed "jonathan jordan" after an argument near cook field, where jordan had just coached his three-year-old son's team. according to jordan's mother "dennard" says it was self defense, but police have not confirmed that. he was killed 66-years ago in the korean war. yesterday, he finally got a proper good bye. army master sergeant "charles j brown junior's" remains were recently identified after he went missing during the war in 1950. yesterday, his family held a service at the sarasota national cemetery. since 1990, north korea has handed over the remains of 600 u-s service members. if you drive across the howard frankland bridge in the morning or evening you know traffic can be a nightmare... and lawmakers may be making one of the lanes to create a toll lane. it could speed up your commute, but it won't be cheap. fox13's "shayla reaves" is on the story this morning. shayla what is this all about? a proposed plan to improve travel on the howard frankland finds some lawmakers looking for answers. ((shayla/take cg3)) monday republican senator jack latvala wrote a letter to the secretary paul steinman. the letter expressed concern about taking current lanes on the howard frankland and turning them into toll lanes. the district 20 "this would be an immediate impediment to creating a business environment uniting the entire tampa bay region..." adding "now is not the time to take current lanes and collect tolls from my constituents who use the bridge to get to work and do not want to have their commute times increased." the howard frankland bridge is getting older. state transportation officials want to make some changes. proposed improvements including replacing the northbound bridge with a wider one. it would also have four lanes like the current bridge only-- one of the lanes, would become a tolled express lane. that means drivers who don't want to spend the money have three lanes instead of four for use. according to recent reports it could cost up to six dollars to use the express lanes and state officials, says it' has been known for years that drivers would have three lanes available for use without a fee-- instead of four. public hearings are scheduled for tuesday and thursday next week. the first in st. petersburg and two mayors from south florida are accusing the state of forcing them to keep secrets from the public. they say they were told to not talk about the location where zika mosquitoes were found. according to the "miami herald": the mayors of miami beach and miami-dade county said the state health department told them the locations must remain confidential during an active investigation. the mayors argue the health and safety of the entire community is more important than privacy. state health officials say it was the county's decision to withhold t the state's. the latest numbers from the state show six new travel-related cases of the mosquito-borne illness, including one in polk county. that brings the statewide total to 689. there are also ten new locally-acquired cases coming out of miami-dade and palm beach counties --bringing that total to 105. there are 90 cases involving pregnant women. we're getting our first look at a new memorial garden dedicated to the victims of the pulse nightclub orlando regional medical center... where many of the victims were treated. 49 limestone pavers with the names of those killed line the garden. the hospital hopes the garden will serve as a place of healing for the community. a woman who survived the pulse nightclub shooting shared the struggles of her recovery during a celebration for rehab patients at florida hospital in ?tampa. "amanda grau" is still in therapy. she just recently stopped using a walking cane the event was a chance for caregivers... nurses and others who helped them recover from illness and accidents. grau says she had to learn how to walk... eat... dress grau has had several surgeries since the shooting. the bucs talk about what went wrong in their game against the rams. and a big signing for the bolts. fox13 sports director breaks it all down along with the rest of this morning's sports headlines. a tough goodbye. a sad update on the dog angel we first introduced you to a year ago. her message to the community that lifted her up. ?? of course not. he's a dog. but that's the beauty of a store full of surprises. you never know what you're gonna find, we first introduced you but you know you're gonna love it. to angel last year. she was the older dog who had been with the suncoast animal an attempt to get her adopted they created a bucket list for her. laura, joins us this morning, with a sad update to her story. last august, we noticed this dog on the suncoast animal league's facebook page... she was a little older... but just as loving as could be. and she had a bucket list of things to do before behind adopted. one of those things was being on t-v, and we're happy to say we made that happen. well, it's with a heavy heart we tell you angel has passed away. animal league posted the update to facebook yesterday. they said angel stopped by the shelter saturday to say goodbye. age had caught up to her. she could no longer stand without help and she no longer had control over her own body. but she left a letter before she went. in read in part: " i am so lucky to have found you, because without you i would not have had the most incredible last year! i think i am the luckiest dog in new friends i will meet in heaven!" the letter concluded by saying thank you for all you have done for me and please keep tabs on mom and dad for me. they've been sad this week, but i keep trying to show them i am strong and it's my turn to go to heaven. the animal league says she no closed captioning is available for traffic. available for captioning is no closed traffic". no closed developing this morning... we report on in every year, but it seems like red tide is back and worse than ever before. fox13's not what beach goers want thanks, ken. the city of cleveland is rocking this morning. the indians clinched the american tigers. this is their first division title since 2007. they made it into the postseason in 2013 as a wild card. cleveland has been solid this year... they won 14 games in a row from june 17 to july 1... a run that coincided with the cavaliers winning their first title in 52 years. and in monday night football, the falcons took on the saints in the superdome. falcons lost 12 straight monday night football games on the road... while the saints were looking to avoid an oh and three start for the second straight year. was a back and fourth game throughout the first half. but the falcons were up 28 to 14 at the half. and they would just pull away in the second half. and go on to win it 45 to 32. what are you looking at?
