Transmission here. We have now a total of 42 nontravel related cases in the state. Weve able to deal with other mosquito born viruses as an example. If we all are aggressive in our own what we do in our lives and we know we have very good Surgeon General and state department of health and local county Health Departments and Mosquito Control we can beat this just like weve beaten other ps g sleeve clothing and Area Protection such bug repellent with deet. Lets bring in dr. Jo with who has following ookdz epidemic for months. Is this case surprising to you . Did you expect to see more cases . Its not surprising. I men youve got to remember we have a lot of mosquitos here. Weve in peak season. Weve lot of people here we have a very dense population and traver that is come and go to our area on a regular basis. Were not that far from miami. See more cases in the future. And always remember, four out of 5 individuals will not have symptoms. We may not be hearing about all cases we may have right here in the tampa bay area. Yeah, this virus is sneaky. So how will department of health proceed in first of all investigating this case and then, controlling this spread . What they do is they trace back their steps for the incubation period. Time that they believe that they may have been infectious. So they are look twoweek period. They will ask being where they worked what did they do. They may not able to pinpoint where the that mosquito bite took place so they will have to test individuals. They will testing family members. Coworkers, household members, people in their neighborhood. They are also going to assess their particular area and theyre going to find out, you know if theres anything where standing water can accumulating, you know spray around that area. But the other things to they are saying that miamidade is the only place where active transmission is occurring now. Why are they saying that . Because they have found other individuals in addition to the people who came forward initially. Who tested positive. They get this pool of people like said household members or whoa workers people in their area they find they are positive. They keep finding that they are positive so they can say their active transmission. They are differentiating that from isolated hoping this pinellas case will be. Where it hasnt been shown to spread to other individuals. Well, until we know that, just an isolated casist its here, right i agree. How concerned should tampa bay residents be and what do we all do differently now . I think we all do need to be concerned. Because, again, if a mosquito bites us, we can spread it to someone else certainly. If we can prevent that bite, guess what, we may stop that virus from spreading to someone else. And its not just pregnant women that were worried about now, i mean weve seen this new research that says it may infect the cells in the brain of adults especially in myspace. Theyve seen tin mice. I heard a doctor say it may thereby for six months or more now. There are so many reasons to protect ourselves. It is here, its probably around us, again, four out of 5 people will be asymptomatic. So it could be right next door you wouldnt know it. Seems like a tricky virus. It tonight at 5 oclock. Definitely. Thanks, jo. Happening now president obama is on his way to louisiana. You can see they just now made it right near that center of the system. And they are going to get a lot of really good information. We take this information from the plane, we plug it into computer model that is where we start to get very good results from computer models because honest weve struggling with this over past several day very good reliable computer models we look at the european and were getting vastly different results. They are moving it in the same direction but the intensity, thats a big, big difference between computer models. Right now we continue to watch it working its way towards the west north world series. Is it unamerican or apparenting right . A pledge of allegiance waiver sent home to florida parents is creating hot debate. Its a permission slip allowing parents to opt their children out of the daily pledge. As fox 13s ken suarez shows us happy with this waiver. You know when i was in School Pretty simple situation. You put your hand over your heart you say the pledge of lee jens. Now under Florida State law, kids have the option of either saying the pledge or not saying the pledge. So when Leon County School officials sent that information out to the parents recently, one guy melted down. Guys name is mica when his niece showed him a waiver that was sent home he began posting on facebook. One posts says whats happening apparently lot of people are asking the same question. Hes gotten, listen to this 13400 shares in just the last six days. This is what has him and so many other people upset. The waiver says i understand my rights as a parent. And i request that my child be excusedrom reciting pledge of lee jens. This request excludes standing and placing his or her right hand over his or her heart. Outraged as well. She writes this is dumbest thing ive ever read. And im im ashamed of this she wrote that on waiver sent it back to the School System case closed. At least in her mind. Now conservative groups are using this a kind of rallying call to say this is an example of just how liberal our School System has become. The School Responds and says, you know what, were just telling you what state law is. Whether you like it or not. Back to you. All right ken, thank you. But guidelines issued by Health Officials for how much sugar your children should eat every in florida, it used to be that if a child, a senior or one of our four legged friends was trapped in a hot car you and i were not allowed to save them unless we were willing to be sued. Has government lost its mind . So i fixed the law to make sure we are all empowered to rescue those who can not rescue themselves. That is the least we dana young for the florida senate. Candy. Cookies and sugary drinks. The temptations are real. But candy, cookies, and sugary drinks. Temptations are real. But too much sugar can have dangerous consequences. American Heart Association released new recommendations for children and teens. And the finding center around added sugar and amount consumed daily. Fox 13s Shayla Reeves breaks down details for you in this report. When it sweets and snacks, sometimes you dont have to look far to find them. In fact im in break room right now where you can find a lot of options for candy, you have options for cookies. All kinds of snacks and cereals. And its what you might not find in products like thoo that caused concern for american Heart Association. They have provided new recommendations for children between the ages of 2 and 18. And those recommendations they center around added sugar. Fruits or things that are naturally occurring. Were talking instead about the sugar you will find in processed foods, the average child right here in the United States has on average 75 grams of added sugar every day. Heres what that looks like. This is an example. You ever got a soda here. And chips, 75 grams. You have a root beer here and chips, 75 grams combined. And two energy drinks, coupled with a container 75 grams combined. So heres what you need to know. According to american Heart Association. Children between the ages two and 18 need to have about a third of that amount of sugar talking about less than 25 grams. Six teaspoons, 100 calories total of added sugar every day. In addition, limit those drinks, those shoe gary drinks sometimes you will find soft description for example. Limit them to about 8 ounces a week. For children under age of experts say they shoornt have any added sugar at all. These are some recommendations to hopefully help maintain health and keep kids safe. Because things like shoe gary snacks can lead to increase risk for some health concerns. Including heart disease, obesity, weight gains just to name a few as we safe, the experts suggest limiting those processed foods and drink more water when you can. Back to you guys. Thank you, well the florida heat raises new concerns about those inflatable bounce houses. Allowing children to jump around in those blow up structures can actually lead to some serious heat related illnesses. You see them all time there in florida. University of georgia researchers says bounce houses can actually create climates similar to hot cars and that can they say there has ab case of a child suffering from heat stroke while in bounce house. Some suggestions they have are to make sure you offer your kids lots of water and make sure they are in light weight, light colored clothing. Well listen, jim, you have young kids and mine used to be young. You know how that is in a bounce house can you come down and drink water. Yeah theyll swing by in about 30 minutes. They got a lot of bounce house places are that are in doors. Which smart in florida. With that as well. Obviously were watching tropics very, very closely. But for now, were actually looking some pretty decent weather over us. Just parting cloudy skies developing we go through the afternoon. Winds have changed around yesterday more of that westerly flow across the state. Now were seeing a bit more of an east, northeasterly flow. In fact you look clouds over there, you can see they are working there way right across the state. At least they will be fairly soon. Away. Were bringing moisture back. That means rain chances, they come back up to about 40 percent for today. But before that, weve already heated temperatures up a lot. 95 over in brandon. Here in tampa were at 93. Wesley chapel the same, down in sarasota, youre currently sitting at 94 degrees. Once you factor in that humidity, look at the head index. And triple digits just about everywhere you go. Brandon, currently 110. Feels like 105 here in tampa. Down in bradenton, currently so if youre going to be outside, take it easy. Now, tropics, they are active. Weve got invest 99. Gaston which Tropical Storm, thats really of no concern. So we will be really focussing in on this as we go through the next several days. In fact Hurricane Hunter plane is currently flying in this system, so were going to get some very good information. We take that information, we plug it into various computer models then we start to get better and better results. But right now you do see that through overnight hours. A lot of that is kind of diminished still a very clear circulation with this. And this is going to continue to work its way to the west northwest over the next several days. Thats what we can say for sure with this system. Then, youve got obviously, how strong is it going to be is it going going to develop into anythings in shortterm looks like we wont see any huge changes, weaver got a lot of dry air were dealing with wind sheer, as we go through next several days conditions start to become more conducive to see development thats about at time it heads over to bahamas. Also remember a very warm water temperatures in that area. Weve got fairly good agreement as far as the track is concerned. Basically that idea that it moves to the west northwest, maybe somewhere over to the east of the state as we get into the weekend. First part of next week. But the big question would obviously been just an area of rain, is this a tropical system, a Tropical Storm or hurricane . Exactly whats it going to do some move it over the state. You dont want to sound those alarm bells just yet with this. But obviously something we will watch. We look at the different computer models, this here is european, very reliable model. Very good model. And it takes a right over the state and develops this into a hurricane. Ive got to tell you with gfs very reliable model moves it generally over the state. It keeps it essentially just a large area of rain. So weve got big the computer models. Thats what we have to work out as we go through the next several days. We plug more of this information in from plane we will start to get a better idea of exactly what this may end up doing. Keep an eye on this. Along on www. Myfoxhurricane. Com, we will be tracking and watch all fox 13 newscast for sure paul delgado much, much more on as we go through night night. 94, few scattered showers and thunderstorms. Then for tonight a comes to an overnight low of 79. For tomorrow, hot, humid more scattered storms around daytime high of 93. On the water winds are out northwest the 5
