everybody. first up tonight, falling temperatures, it's going to be a cold night, near freezing in some areas. people were dressed in their coats and their jackets tonight. paul's here now with a look at how cool it's going to get. >> coldest temps mid-february. we had a cold front that produced some rain over the weekend. that cold front is down by cuba and the setup is really perfect for cold air for us. a dome of arctic high pressure north of us and winds are filtering down the peninsula. and check out temperatures as of 10:00. already 37 in brooksville. 49 in tampa. 50 in sarasota. it's already in the mid-30s and blue in the panhandle. even the southern part of the state is getting colder. dry. this air mass is moving our way. it will continue to filter down. in fact, we are going to have but tomorrow night will be cold because tomorrow night less wind and radiational cooling. i am thinking 42 in tampa. 39 in lakeland. 32, so a freeze in brooksville. mid 40s along the coastline. tomorrow night, under clear skies, raiseiation at cooling t. will be just as cold, if not colder inland. oh! and by the way, freeze warning includes all of citrus county and inland hernando, pretty much east of u.s. 19. the duration of the freeze from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and even tomorrow, we are in the low 60s. on top of that, we have the chance of some rain and severe weather on friday. we will discuss all of that at 10:20. >> a would-be robber gets more than he bargains for when he tries to rip off a tampa foods store in whole foods store. when the store owner had a gun. halley, what happened? >> reporter: mark, police say this all started as an attempted robbery. the suspect came in carrying a knife, but what the would-be robber did not know is that the clerk was armed too. shaken up, but at least safe and in one piece, this whole foods store clerk came back monday night. he might not be so lucky. monday afternoon, tampa police say a man armed with a knife came into the store on north 22nd street and he walked up to the clerk and demanded money. but pretty soon, the tables were turned. >> the clerk took out a firearm and shot him in the head. >> reporter: in seconds, the whole thing was over. the would-be robber was taken to tampa general hospital with life-threatening injuries. neither the clerk nor a witness were hurt. >> the clerk appears to be fine. he's a little bit shaken up. and we are questioning him. but it seems like it's pretty straight forward. >> reporter: customers, gathered around the store as frantic investigators looked around. >> >> reporter: breathing one of the biggest sighs of relief is this man, the clerk's brother. >> thank god nothing happened to my brother because his wife is pregnant with twins. imagine the twins with no father. >> reporter: he told us, the store has had crime-related problems in the past. >> he's been telling me, the place is very dangerous. >> reporter: this time, his brother was prepared for whatever trouble came through the door. >> my brother is all about the work, to make an honest living. i am glad, and thank you, jesus, for saving my brother. >> reporter: no charges have been filed. investigators are reviewing surveillance video from inside the store. but as you heard, investigators believe this case is pretty cut and dry. >> sounds like it. >> well, happening right now, why will make you very happy. in just a few minutes, i-275 northbound will be shut down so new lanes that have been worked on for years can actually finally open. fox 13's evan axelbank is live on the detour route on i-275 and has the changes and what this means for tomorrow morning. >> reporter: well, cars are going to be detoured at the end of the howard franklin on to kennedy and then to himes and then they will be able to get back on the highway here at 275, where you can see that the work is already beginning tonight. drivers are hoping that the end result of all of this construction will alleviate traffic that has anowed -- annoyed them for years. >> reporter: describe rushhour traffic in one word. >> it's horrible. >> reporter: two more? >> hectic. >> it's a total mess. >> reporter: it's a reputation that is solidified with construction cones. >> i moved to tampa 3 years ago and it seems like they have been doing construction ever since i >> reporter: she's right. but three years of building will culminate tuesday morning, as old lanes are shut down and new ones opened, to the cheers of -- well, everyone. >> it will be nice. >> christmas in january. >> yes. >> reporter: the big shift from old to new will start at 10:30. construction crews will detour traffic off 275 after the howard franklin and send cars down kennedy, left at dale mabry, right at cypress. left at himes, where they will be allowed back on. by 5:30 a.m., they will have closed the old and opened the new. >> it's very constrained. it does feel tight. tsdz morning, motorists will have a really welcome change. >> reporter: f-dot says the tight turns and big dips will be gone, replaced by a three-lane comfort cruise of wider lanes and straighter pass. >> the whole idea was to add capacity and ease the congestion. population growth. >> reporter: three-plus years of construction will be close to being over. but it may take a while to win everyone back. >> i wouldn't be too inclined to using it because i know that everyone else will also be trying it. >> reporter: crews will still be working on a fourth lane which will be open by the middle of the year, according to f-dot, which means the entire project can be done several months ahead of time. >> which really is amazing. we have talked about this before, they are actually finishing something early, which makes us all very happy. >> reporter: great. you gotta love it. >> we have to work on the bridge traffic and it will be fine. >> officials confirm they have found the remains of a 21-month-old baby, a very sad end to a six-month-long search. the suspected killer led them right to the body. so sad. lonzyary disappeared from his home in jacksonville and today, authorities found his body -- what's left of it, in a wooded area. they worked with rubin ebram, he's the main suspect. at first, back in the summer, he told the police the boy was in his car and it was stolen. that sparked a massive amber alert, a huge search. now deputies say that was a lie. during the renewed search, detectives found the toddler's body and they say that ebrim led them to it. >> our goal from the beginning was to find lonzy. unfortunately, it turned pretty obvious, pretty quickly that wasn't going to happen with him being alive. but that didn't stop our efforts and didn't stop the interest of the public. it is a very sad day that we find... these remains that we believe to be lonzy's. but it's the first step in justice. to start today in the trial for child neglect and lying to police. but his lawyer waived his right to a speedy trial, was glanted a continuous. there will be a new trial date. lonzy's mother pled guilt tow child neglect in connection with her son's disappearance. and she has agreed to testify against ebrim. >> all right, cynthia. police are investigating a stream of home burglaries in some of south tampa's priciest neighborhoods and they all happened during the morning hours on the weekend, saturday. police believe the crimes are all connected. most of them happen saturday morning in parklin estates. investigators believe the criminal is casing out homes and entering when they think the house is empty. >> there are no neighborhoods that are immune to crime, which is why we tell people, if you see something that doesn't add up, that doesn't look right, to please let us know about it, regardless of what neighborhood you are in. investigating very quickly. surveillance cameras caught this image of a small white car. police believe it may have been the get-away car. officers say they are working some very good leads. >> a man is in critical condition after being shot by a motorcyclist in temple terrace. police are trying to find out if it's a case of road rage t. happened near 1:00 a.m. a man says a motorcyclist had been following him for miles, eventually pulled up next to the car and fired into the driver's window. the victim ended up crashing into a pole because he was hit. he was taken to tampa general in critical condition. the motorcyclist is a white male in his 40s or 50s with a long beard, gray hair and street racer-style motorcycle. >> it's very concerning. this is an act that could have been random. maybe it isn't. but it happened right there on the street. of course, as always, very concerning. >> yeah. they need your help taking the motorcyclist off the streets. contact the temple terrace police. >> an expelled army veteran won't be reunited to usf. the university rejected his request for re-admission, despite a plea from a judge to give allred a second chance. he took a plea deal after he insulted a muslim convenience store clerk, urinated on the gas station floor and fired a gun into the air. he was expelled from usf and given two years of house arrest. he suffers from ptsd and alcoholism and he needs 17 credits to earn his bachelors degree. >> deputies rescued dozens of cats from a filthy house last week. we got these pictures inside the home. there was trash and necease everywhere. they found 18 cattings. two of them were already dead. some have leukemia and respiratory issues. neighbors say they had no idea something like that was going on right next door. >> it's shocking to find out something like that could happen, a pretty quiet guy. i can't imagine people doing something like that. >> animal control and detectives arrested cecil miller. this is the third time he's been charged with animal cruelty. he had been ordered by a judge not to have any animals at all. >> she's his eyes. now a bradenton man is worried that his guide dog could be out of commission after being attacked a week ago, off southern parkway in bradenton. richard was walking his guide dog, andy when he said two pit bulls attacked him. one latched onto his dog. the other onto his leg. look at that. luckily, his dog is okay. but there is another concern too. >> they can choose not to work because they will connect the two events as a negative and tell the owner that working is not something they will continue that can ruin somebody's life in a second. >> well, today, southeastern guide dogs went to visit andy. when she saw her harness, she wagged her tail and that's a very good sign that she could be ready to go back to work. we talked to the people at the home where the attack happened and they said their dogs' shots were up to date. >> florida's legislative session begins tomorrow. a big issue this time, immigration. republican lawmakers filed seven anti-immigration bills. activists piled into a van to opposed measures. >> we want to live. we want to see that these bills are made and we want to take this message to the capitol to say we are here. we are florida. and come back to our communities and tradition dating back more than a century is ending much earlier than expects. ringling brothers is retiring their elfans this year nmay. that's two years earlier than they had planned. erin has more. >> reporter: mark, a spokesperson for ringling brothers says the company determined it has enough space to accommodate all of its elephants. so the retirement date was moved right now, ringling has 29 asian elfans retired at the center for elephant conservation. the 11 that are still joining the company will soon retire. animal rights activists accused the circus of abuse and that's something that ringling denies. but a spokesperson says, cities and counties across the country passed laws making the continued use of elephants impractical. one of the animal's care-givers sayiz they will be well taken care of. >> the center for elephant conservation is -- there is no place else like this in the world. that would be retirement, reproduction and the study of asian elephants. we look forward to the future and expanding our conservation role. >> elephants have proven resistant to cancer. a scientist in utah is looking studying the animals' blood simples. p.e.t.a. says she is glad they are being retired, but she is skeptical that they will be treated properly. >> it is chilly here. but look at the people in chicago. they are freezing because the temperature in the windy city today was has moved well south of us. a batch of light rain, won't be impacting us. could get into miami and west palm. cold high driving the air mass south. you can see the dry air in red. the moisture is south of fort myers. we will expand on the view. you want to see how the elnino is impacting the weather. you can see the subtropical jet in the grayish white colors from the pacific, all the way across our state. there is energy over the pacific and also in the west. ride along that sub tropical jet and probably impact us on friday. at the very least, we will see at least some rain. but there could be some severe weather. that was the case on saturday with the shower, maybe a couple of thundershowers and all of a sudden, have you an ef-2 tornado in cape coral. that's why we talked all year long about the dangers of severe weather in elnino years. 18 homes have major damage, 49 in tampa. 42 in new tampa. 37 in brooksville. 44 in wesley chapel. you get the idea -- it's cold. sarasota has even wednesday should be kind of cool as well. clear, cold and a freeze north tonight. we are down to 42. tomorrow, we have sunshine and a crisp day and 62 for a high. then coming up on wednesday, partly cloudy, remaining cool, mid 60s. we will track the weather late in the week. there are no surbets, but there is a potential of some sort of rain event. we will watch that the next but bottom she was caught. investigators say abigail lee kemp and an accomplice targeted six stores including one in panama city beach in august. and kemp was a budding model before allegedly turning to a life of crime. >> it appears a combination of factors led to this suspect's arrest, including security camera video of the radios. fbi officials say within hours of releasing images like these to the media, they started receiving numerous credible tips from the public. acquaintances of abigail lee kemp told authorities they noticed her wearing jewelry that seemed a little out of her price range. investigators noticed activity from the same metro atlanta phone number in several states. a few years ago, kemp posed for wearing short dresses and high heels. the atlanta journal constitution quotes a former classmate saying kemp was athletic in mischievous. kemp, now 24 years old, was arrested friday in the atlanta suburb of smirn affiliate another person who was with her at the time was also arrested. the fbi has not released that person's identity, but in the jewelry store videos, kemp is seen with a man who allegedly served as a lookout, during the robberies. the arrest went down friday's raid, slipping out the back interest a tunnel and the sewer system. he emerged out a manhole cover, but agents later caught him in a get-away car. extradecision proceedings are underway, but
