readings, right now 62 in west kendall. everyone else fairly mild from 67 to about 69, what we've been trending with for the last few hours. the northeast wind bringing in passing clouds today. as i mentioned, maybe a sprinkle. by and large it's ploud conditions and mild weather in place as we get through our friday and into your upcoming weekend. mild start at 68. breezy beaches today and a high rip current risk which i'll talk about in about 15 minutes. up to 75 this afternoon, warmer into the weekend. next week, rain chances but also warmer weather coming our way. more on that in a few minutes. right now a first check of traffic for this hour, here is kelly blanco. we have an accident that you're approaching 395. that ramp, they're telling me it's completely blocked off. as you can see, traffic is really not moving at this time. this accident happened about five minutes ago. you can see the flashing lights herereff to the distance. that's that ramp at 395, the macarthur causeway. i'm goingng to make phone calls to see how it will affect your morning ride. as we can see, traffic is a complete parking lot. we've been accident-free up until right now. i-95 southbound trying to ramp on to 395, macarthur causeway completely blocked off. stck to julia tuttle causeway. a 5-year-old is inhe hospital for breathing in too much smoke. firefighters snt the early morning hours sifting through the burned remains of an apartment. nbc 6's michael spears is outside the apartment southwest miami-dade. a big question many people had when thisas happening. >> reporter: that's right, sell li, where were the parents and hot did the fire start. those are the big questions they're looking the answer. the girl was rescued from a burning condo unit, found alone according to fire rescue. she is okay but recovering from smoke inhalation after being rushed to the hospital. cell phone video from last night shows how busy and chaotic this scene was. miami-dade police have bn called in to investigate as well. this is the versailles gardens miami-dade. we're told they got multiple 911 calls before 8:00 p.m. and the girl's mother according to investigators was somewhere else apartment. exactly where is unclear, that's what we've been working to find out. we know neighbors were evacuated and some were truly worried the fire would spread. >> coming across from the get worried about you and your family and what's going to happen if it spreads or not. >> luckily this morning a positive happy ending to all tts. the 5-year-old girl saved, firefighters able to contain the fire to this one unit. it did not spread to other units. folks were evacuated and later let in. this morning, again, the two big questions, not clear if the police will file charges against the girl's parents. now to an update on a crackdown to get criminals off the streets of miami. officers wrapp their investigation six hours ago, rounding up suspected criminals to show crimes come with consequences. the sweep comes amid concerns about sketchy activity in the flag am many area. police say they're hoping their efforts clean up the crime and deter it in the future. four minutes past the hour. county man shot by police is saking out. we're hearing from them for the first time since a merial for their loved one was burned. julia gg is in the studio with us this morning. this was made four months to the day after corey jones was shot and killed. the question now is whether or not it was an accident or whether it was on purpose. what are ings pointing to? >> the family suspects this was not an accident and it is indeed a grim discovery. talking pictures, teddydy bears, candles at this spot on the side of pga boulevard and i-95 where a palm beach police officer shot october. it's the same place jones' family gathers to remember him with music every month. they were on that spot yesterday morning and say sometime after they left the musician's memorial went up in flames. >> i was passing by, a a as i passed the site is when i right. >> those are the words from a the time stamp on that video says 11:31. the man who captured i has a dash cam company. jones' relatives say they do not believe the candles at the memorial set everything on fire. police say they don't have a reason to believe the flames were set on purpose. but they're checking into that possibility. conditions, she'll be confined to her home with a gps ankle monitor. cops arrested her earlier in the month for her involvement in the death of baby hugo alvarez vargas and found inside a freezer at her homestead house. this morning we're hearing from a miramar dad heartbroken after his son was hit and killed by a man running from police. en has of his son jayden. all this happening in palm beach county when jayden was hit by a driver who swerved off the road while being chased by police. jayden's olderbrother still wearing the same clothes from the weekend on saturday and is refusing the change. >> i just real wish i could see, you know, what he was going to really turn out to be, because he touched a lot of people. >> devastating to say the least. police did catch up with that driver that is lex eugene he was recently released from prison and was driving without a license. he's facing a long list of charges right now including vehicular homicide. new this morning, a pilot's world turned upside down when his plane crashed in the keys. the pilot trying to land that small plane at arivate airport when it went down late last the plane hit phone lines before it hit the ground. it's not clear exactly what caused the crash to begin with. the pilot did walk away unharmed and no one on the ground was hurt. green bean surprise. a woman was preparing dinner for a church function when clinton hold a 28-point lead over bernie sanders. they're essentially ed in nevada. with 24 hours to go until nevada's democratic caucus, both are going after the state's large latino electorate. >> @stevenbc6. this morning we know more about president obama'sistoric up coming trip to cuba. white house officials say the visit will take place on march 21st and 22nd. during the trip the president will meet with cuban leader raul castro, cuban entrepreneurs and members of civil society. news comes after the u.s. and cuba restored diplomatic relations in 2015 for the first president obama took to twitter to make this historic announcement. the president says he's not turning a blindye to human rights concerns and plans to address dectly with people who are anti-government descendants. he emphasized that even though relations have thaud, there are still differences between the two governments. preside obama is the first president to visit cuba since calvin coolidge nearly nine decades instead. those delays are stretching back for quite a few miles as you can take that detour. stick to the julia tuttle causeway. make sure you tell your co-workers the ramp to 395 is completely shut down. another vantage point from our first alert cameras, traffic not moving much, pretty much a park lot. again, i-95 southbound as you approach 395 ramp. this is the only traffic alert we have this smoke inhalation overnight after fire consumed the apartment she was living in. her mother nowhere to be found right now investigatorortrying to figure out what sparked those fire and why the girl was as you make your southbound on i-95 heading towards 395, you can't take that ramp. a rollover accident has that area completely shut down. we're seeing pretty heavy delays because of it. they are going to start to let one of the lanes get by. for right now avoid 395 completely. you can see the delays stretching back for miles. it's arollover crash that has the ramp to 395 completely blocked it's turning out that fake passports apparently stopped two would-be attackers. here is what wewee learning from our nbc producers are that on the ground in paris. an algerian and pakista man attempted to get through a migrant checkpoint in greece. they were stopped even as the other attackers were able to go ahead and get there and carry out that attack which, of course, happened last year in november. their passports raised too many questions and they were on a multiday hold. those men, both of them, are now under arrest. confusion and curiosity got two women in trouble with police. the mother and daughter turned themselves in to mooech police for questioning. sevel calls, a lot of calls from people con send about these rwo women they say were suspicious because they were you're not goings to be able to. that ramp completely shut down. causing prty heavy tie-ups. we'll take you to our first alert camera. traffic right now at a standstill. these are the southbound lanes as you're approaching the 95 ramp. you might want to stick to let's take you to our maps and see how fast traffic is moving along. on i-95 on the approach of that ramp to 395, traffic moving to 18 miles per hour. if you take the julia tuttle causeway. we have a crash on the westbound lanes of northwest 27th avenue. you have a right lane blocked off. doesn't seem to be causing too much of a tie-up. no major issues in broward. first alert forect with meteorologist ryan phillips. >> roadways are dry right now. temperatures warmer than they were at this point yesterday morning. 68 on the the hospital after she was left home alone when flames started in her miami-dade apartment. this morning fire investigators want to know where her mother was. nbc 6 reporter michael spears is live outside the fountain blue apartment complex. michael, police actually think the little girl may have been the one to start the fire. >> reporter: it's unclear at this point how exactly the firee you talk about this fire, truly a parent's worst nightmare. your kid trapped inside a burning apartment. in this case investigators say the mother was nowhere to o found. luckily investigators were able to pull the 5-year-old girl out of the apartment and rescue her. she is recovering in the hospital with smoke inhalation. expected to be okay. investigators are looking into why the girl was alone insisi the apartment in the first place and, of course, how the fire started. we're here at the verysailles gardens apartments. we're still getting whiffs of the smoke. one can only imagine what it was like being trapped in there. they say the girl's mother was outside the locked apartment at the time. >> i smell a lot of smoke. firefighters going in bringing out old people, pets and stuff. i just saw a bunch of fire. i came out. i was worried about my buildin they were able to contain this fire to just this unit, did not spread to the other units here. there's quite a few of them. neighbors were evacuated, however. we saw people very thankful that this fire didn't spread. we're going to find out whether filed. that is unclear at this time. live in northwest miami-dade, michael spears, nbc 6 news. your time is 6:47. we dive into a lot of newspapers overnight to gather information. this time around we found a story that is sure to spark a lot of debated rigig here in florida. "the washington post" detailing marco rubio's time spent as a representative in the statehouse and how his attendance directly related to that is now in question. julia, i think not such good publicity in terms of marco rubio rubio. >> definitely not. these developments appear to show a pattern the senator has repeated in washington. then state representative marco rubio landed a spot on a coveted 9/91 panel. then he skipped hours of expert testimony, missed more meetings than any colleagues and did not show up for m me than 20 votes. his number of no-shows drew concern fm the speaker of the house who gave him the job. later on in washington, senator rubio has missed more votes there than any of his colleagues. that is certainly something we will be watching to see how the senator responds to that on the campaign trail. ba to you, eric. >> julia, thank you so much. a new bill could have elementary school kids back out on the playground. the bill requires at least 20 minutes of recess a day, and it pass phd the florida house late last night. only two people actually voted against it. the bill would also make it so that kids will not have their recess taken away for any disciplinary or academic reason. so far the state senate has refused to hear that bill. mind you, there are onl three session. in a few hours, the world health organization will give an fight against zika, this comes as the number of cases continue to grow in the states, including here inflorida. last week two new cases popped up both here in miami-dade. all cases so far are traveled related. the broward lawyer accused of having sex with an inmate returns to court to try to get er client out of jail this time. now as she is defending him, dep stays have found a new way to keep the two separated moving this case forward. 35-year-r-d jessica ma shally can only meet with her client through a window. she's arguing she can't have eaningful contact or prepare paperwork by doing it this way. a judge disagreed with all that. the defense attorney believes the accusations that recently surfaced have nothing to do with her and everything to do with her client. the trials for the death of 25-year-old freddie gray are on hold. maryland c crt of appeals put a hold on the trials of three baltimore police officers charged in this case. the court will wait until a or not officer william
