We have had dozens of accidents hraoeugtd up the board and maps. I just got off the phone with n. C. Dot said if uryou are essential personnel at a hospital or healthcare please slow down and give yourself lots of time. The good news he said the precipitation is cutting off a little and that will allow them to get an upper hands on the icy spots. They have 50 trucks out in wake county and 20 contractors working on areas like there, 495 at 440 and those bridges and overpasses just a mess. They are the first to freeze in wertz like there. This has been here all morning. There is an accident there, 440 and 495. Those folks have been stuck behind that shut down roadway for hours this morning. We can show you some other cameras and you see the precipitation is starting to slow down for now. 440 and u. S. 1 with a mess as well. This this is the crossroads area. 440 westbound at u. S. 1. Several cars involved in that accident scene due to icy conditions. Freeway. We have been checking this area all morning and this was one of the snow mix coming in when we went on the air at 4 30 and it was stick being to the grassy surfaces, the median. You can see there we are still seeing blacktop. But always a threat of ice. It has been such an icy, dicey start to the day. The word is please stay off the roads and if you are Emergency Personnel they want you to get there safely and you have to leave yourself lots of extra time and take it slow. They are working on the troubled spots and if you need to check Road Conditions, 511 is the number and you can pinpoint certain roads. Knightdale been busy with a icy conditions. U. S. 64 and 264 westbound and u. S. 64 business. All the pink is the icy area. 440 eastbound also western boulevard another report of an accident there. You get the idea. Wade avenue and 440 was shut down due to an accident and that but it is a busy start to the day. Barbara no doubt. John we want to mention now and talk to a man amber mentioned steve abbott with the North Carolina department of transportation. Barbara you probably heard amber talking about the accidents. Good morning to you. Good morning. Barbara what are you guys doing . We have 70 trucks out. Salt and sands mix in wake county to react to some of the slippery spots. Some are the ones that put down boone brine earlier. The bridges and overpasses are where the problems and drivers going a little too quick. John you mentioned the brine that was put down. Has ittit held up or was it on for too long. . It held up perfectly. It is goods for about 48 hours so we were ought mostly on saturday. It is just that stuff is still from freezing to the road but doesnt melt it into water. It keeps it from freezing on the roads. There will still be icy patches. John mr. Abbott, give some advice to drivers who are to be out in this weather. Go very slowly, very carefully. Make sure you are not too close to a vehicle in front of you because if it would spend out it could take your car. Keep your cars well behind trucks and go very slow and be very careful. A lot of extra time to get where you are going. Barbara steve abbott with the North Carolina d. O. T. We appreciate your being with us. We know that you are busy. Thank you for getting the word out for folks to stay off the road. John you can see from the live picture not a lot of traffic but still dozens of wrecks already. We will show you more live pictures. Schools there are contestlosed. Knees are from the breaking news these are from the breaking news. Barbara you see nearly two inches of know fell last night before tapering off about midnight. More is expected this morning. But you see the Road Conditions. That is why the schools are coast being. It is piling up. John we will go to Gloria Rodriguez who has gotten out. Tell us where you are and what are seeing, gloria. Gloria we just got out because theres a closure at 495 and south new hope road. You can see police here have blocked off this portion of 495 and they are diverting traffic around this area. I wants you to look over i want you to look here because that is creating backups on 495 westbound toward joined raleigh. You see bumpertobumper traffic. This is all the way down to the beltline. Numerous accidents here and we have video. There are backups on 495 heading westbound. If you are driving in this area just make sure you give yourself plenty of extra time because you could be stuck in traffic for some time. Raleigh police described this area of 495 and south new hope road as a sheet of ice. They have been salting the bridge. We have will reports it is should down from smithfield road and wendell boulevard and police estimate they have gotten reports of 20 to 25 accidents this morning alone. So far no fatallies reported so that is good. They say most of them are minor. Back here live im on 495 on the bridge right now and this is the portion that is closed. The ground was icy earlier and they have salted this bridge twice so that is why im able to stand here with no problems. But when we first got here we because it is very slippery. You may encounter that we you are driving today so be very careful. We will bring you the latest. Live in raleigh, Gloria Rodriguez, abc 11 Eyewitness News. John thanks, gloria. Barbara lets go to Anthony Wilson in cary. Eubgs 40 and u. S. I40 and u. S. Within. What are you saying, anthony . Anthony this is a real mess. Lots of flashing lights. We have seen multiple cars here. This is cary and 40 near u. S. 1 and these accidents happened earlier. We have shown them to you from a different perspective but right now in breaking news one we are staying inside the vehicle for safety. It does appear that some of these cars slid across off the road into each other on the lefthand side of the screen, if you look there where the flashing red lets are, we see cars that seemed to have slid off the road. Again a reminder of how potentially dangerous what looks like wet pavement can be. In front of us directly on the right side of the screen that is one vehicle being taken away by a tow truck. Beyond that we can see another two or three. Apparently there were as many as a dozen scars involved in cars involved. You see traffic being diverted and people taking their time after seeing what a mess we have. Lets see if you look on the far right where that truck is going, it is passing another badly damaged car. And there is somebody else going fast. So, some people dont get the message. That is a very graphic example of what can happen. Way on the righthand side on u. S. 1 it looks hike theres another situation calling for flashing lights. We will stay here for a bit and shoefrlly not show you much more than there unless we have to move to another one of the there is a very graphic example, we want you to understand how bad things are and why you probably should avoid drive if you can. The pavement looks like it is wet, could be icy. Back to you. We are live in breaking news one in cary. John john anthony, thank you. Now a look at some Eyewitness News photos that you have sent to us. Tom dickerson is sending this one of the this is highway 49 south of roxboro. Even though it is dark you can see snow covering the payment there. Barbara and samantha stone has this in creedmoor with a blanket send pictures and videos with the hash tag abc11. John some are excited but if you are stuck in traffic or been involved in a wreck it is nothing to celebrate. Barbara we had a woman faculty message about johnston county. Schools were closed because of president s day but the staff has to come in on a day and i think the college says theres a little confusion. I dont know if it is a good day to be out but wait if you can. Don the biggest problem is the untreated surfaces because the grounds temperature was well below freezing so even where it rained we are seeing significant accumulation. I just stepped out of our studio and i slid my slew to see and there is no traction. I uploaded that. Lets talk about the warning, watches and advisoryies. We have winter storm warning for the Northern Counties running it has been extended. This counts for roxboro, arrange, alamance and around the triad. Winter weather advisory for the fortune half of the viewing area and you are under that through 7 00 tonight. Not that it will rain all day until 7 00 tonight and freezing rain and snow but because it is going to take until 7 00 to get ice melted. Into the sand hills you have a Winter Weather advisory until 1 00. You might be in Cumberland County or hoke saying we are not seeing anything small. I know but the ground is so cold if you see rain it will freeze and cause problems. It is our the most powerful radar in the carolinas showing Little Pockets of drizzle in chatham and moore counties. Not much in hoke or Cumberland County. Right here is a batch of heavier freezing rain as it works through. The purple area is where you have a better chance of sleet. Here in durham it is sleeting as you go north we are seeing some snow that is pushing to the northnortheast. Live look into downtown raleigh where the temperature has gone down another degree so at the surface it is very cold. Even though it is raining just above the seeing some snow that is surface it is warm and it is raining into very cold air, 23, dew point 19, 86 humidity. Everybody in the 20s this morning. Roxboro 23, 22 oxford. 23 siler city. 26 sanford and 25 goldsboro. We have the wintry mix around and the satellite is starting to break up a little bit. We see solid cloud cover even throw it looks like there are locals in the satellite. Into South Carolina we are seeing the moisture lift. We will be in it the next several hours. The showers will be more spotty but they will be around. Sleet. There is what is happening right now. As you go out it is cold, 23, you go about 3 to 40 feet 30 to 40 feet above the surface it is warmer and you have rain and it is falling. It doesnt have time to refreeze and it hits the ground and freezes on contact. That is freezing rain. We have sleet falling. That means the shallow layer near the fairs is a little deeper and higher in the cold air. The raindrops are falling and freezing and hit the grounds. Raindrops are shaped like tear drops. They are almost balls that is why they freeze into sleet balls. As far as looking ahead, this is the first alert predictor forecast model. It is very spotty. I dont think we will see a big push of moisture through today. We will see pockets working through. As we go from 8 00 to 2 00 this afternoon it switches to be more of a rain event. That means warmer air is working in and it goes from the 20s to above freezing and we will see evening and wont rain all afternoon or mean but did you could rain any time. The best chance is tomorrow morning. Tomorrow mornings commute will stink as well. Not because of ice but because of heavy rain in spots. We could get up to a half inch or more of kwrrbl rainfall tomorrow additional rainfall as the line works through then it will lift out and we start to clear through the afternoon and into wednesday. As far as how much we will see, roxboro one to three inches, Northern Counties could get one to three inches of snow and sheet. Wake county less than an inch. You will see the wintry mix containing to rain later and freezing rain changing to rain in the sand hills. The forecast is lake there. Rest of today in wake county wintry mix off and on throughout the morning, cloudy, temperatures gradually claiming. I think in raleigh you wont go before freezing until about 2 00 this afternoon. By 2 00 freezing, by 5 00 warmer and rain around. Winds will pick up. Through the rest of the region, better chance of seeing freezing rain toward smithfield and sleet up to durham, wintry mix and warming. Sand hills start with pockets of freezing rain but that will change to rain through the day. In fayetteville you will get into the 40s this afternoon. In south hill, virginia, mid 30s so you will see snow mixing with the wintry mix throughout the day. 36 henderson, 35 roxboro, tarboro more of a rain event. Tonight everybody gets into the warmer air. Even roxboro 40 overnight. That will push all of that precipitation into rain mode and we will see rain, can be heavy at tames tomorrow morning times tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning 5 00 to 8 00 we could have a thunderstorm. First alert sevenday forecast powered by accuweather, tomorrow afternoon we see those rain showers ending and some sun wednesday 55 fplt. Thursday 51. Friday 53. By the weekend it is back into the 60s. Again, it is going to be one of those things where you will look out and i will say the majority today will be rain free. I dont think you will see it rain all day. But when it does it is falling on very cold ground and causing ice problems. John some phoenix folks hitting me up on facebook saying havent seen anything. Barbara it will be that. I dont think we will see a big accumulation of ice causing Power Outages but tomorrow we could see wind gusts with the rain, 35 plus miles an hour so we may see Power Outages due to wind. We will watch that. Barbara good time. Amber happy monday. This has been a very busy monday. I was looking at the same thing as john was saying you look at twitter and follow the emergency officials on twitter and Highway Patrol reporting approximately 50 accidents, seven in wake cut. Stay off the roads if you can. We will continue it say that this morning. It is icy and it is just an ice arriving on many roads so they have had to shut some down and it was deceiving when it was dark. Theres a new accident here 40 eastbound at highway 147 the durham freeway. Those headlights are going eastbound. Behind the car in the median you can see a lot of flashing lights and delay that is starting to formal there, 40 eastbound at accident. Looks like a little bit of a pileup. 40 at u. S. One this is from one of our storm casers. This chasers. This has been very busy and a slick spots for emergency crews and spin i couldnt tells, spinouts and an emergency there. Gloria rodriguez is reporting from 495 at south rogers lane, ice rink. You see that the precipitation has shut off for now and that is what the d. O. T. Is saying. That is good because they can try to gets an upper hand on some of the problem areas especial lyly bridges and overpasses that freeze first. We have seen so many accidents opbtdz on the overpasses. At 4 30 wade avenue was shut down at 440 because of ice covering t. Knightdale a busy morning, u. S. 64 and 264 westbound at u. S. 64 business area. Tractortrailer. All of this pink that you can see is where you are dealing with the possibility of ice and then you can see mixed with that some snow to the north. Obviously nobody can drive on ice and thats why we are seeing so many accidents. Another one reported here 440 eastbound at western. You get the idea. Stay off the roads if you can. Emergency Officials Say it is to respond to folks who are having issues and accidents. Back to you. Barbara some people have to get out. John yes, thats what we are seeing. Joining us by telephone is mindy hamlin with Raleigh Raleigh airport. Barbara what is the scene there, cancellations . We are seeing cancellations today although we have flights that are taking off. But throughout the day we have about 70 flights that have been canceled. That is arrivals an departures. So we recommend passengers contacts tv Contact Airlines before they come to the airport. And if you have a flight later today check the status because we dont know what will happen as the day goes on. So even if your flight is on schedule this morning things can change quickly. John as aware talking to you we are as we are talking to you it looks like there may be sideline. Can you see out the window . No. Sideline which would be good. Do they have to deice the planes in conditions like it yes, they do. Theres a little bit of time built in for the flights to get off the gate and go through the ice before they takeoff. Barbara thank you for joining us frplgts we will continue to check in with you and let us know if anything changes and we will pass along the information that people need to check in. John even if it is sunshine weve 23 degrees out so it is cold and been a cold weekends. Barbara thank you rbgs, mindy. Our winter storm coverage continues at 7 30. John when we come back we will look at some of the areas that have been lit the hardest hit the hardest. This is a live look at person u abc 11 Eyewitness News starts right now. This is a live look from our breaking news. Slick roads there. Live Team Coverage from around the viewing area. Welcome on this monday. It is almost 7 30. John we are preempting Good Morning America because of the dozens of accidents. We will be checking in with Don Schwenneker in just a few seconds. We will bring you uptodate on the latest School Closings. Lake county schools, durham public schools, are among those close. Barbara granville, halifax, hartnett, lee, kirkman, and Wilson County schools. John clinton city schools, johnson, moore, robinson, wayne county schools, you can find a complete list of closings and delays on the home page. Johnson county is closed. Because of the holiday. Barbara staff and middle and Early College are on a two hour delay. John lets check in with Tamara Barbara good morning. Good morning john and barbara. John tell us about conditions. We cannot emphasize it enough. If folks dont have to venture out this morning, stay home. It seems like it is clear, but when you get out there the conditions are very very slick. Our deputies have been out since last evening, patrolling the streets, helping stranded motorists. At least two stranded motorists our units had to respond to. We had to respond to at least eight weatherrelated rex. Wrecks. Most commonly, issues off interstate 40 near alexander. Conditions are very slick out there. John any roads in particular or does it look bad all over the place . From our vantage point, folks should take caution and stay home because it is widespread. We have responded to wrecks on old oxford highway, sharon road as well. An overturned vehicle, i texted 181. It is throughout the area. Barbara we might be checking in a little bit later. John you may remember camera. She is working for the Durham County sheriffs office. Tomorrow. Tamara. Don folks are saying it is a mess. A live look at radar. This morning, other folks the in pockets of precipitation. Patricia in nashville says we have got icy roads. Lauren mcneil told me she had to go from western boulevard to work today. He counted 12 cars off the road. Lets zoom around the region. The good news for us is we are not in the bulk of the precipitation. That is mainly to our north. Even if you are outside right now, when you see these Little Pockets work through, through hard it county and into hope and more county moore county. It is freezing instantly. That is what we have got through Durham County, Little Pockets along i40 right now. Durham, we have sleet falling. That is what the purple is. It is very slick out there. I took out one of my spare shoes and showed how fast it slid away on an untreated surface. Search big weather. You can see what it is doing outside. White and blue is all snow. For the most part, it is snow. The entire county covered in that. Then we start to see some purple working in. Starting to see some sleep makes in and sleep freezing rain. Winter storm warning until tomorrow morning. Temperatures across the region in the teens. 23 in oxford, 23 in lewisburg, the next 12 hours, we have got spot seeing freezing rain, sleet, snow. Wintry mix continues 29 degrees. This afternoon, above freezing, we have warmer rain and that will help melt things off. Tonight, some very heavy rain. We will talk about that and the complete forecast. Tomorrow morning we will see ice, heavy rain working through. A thunderstorm tomorrow morning as well. We do weather and traffic together. Amber it is changing quickly. They are adding more accidents by the minute. That is the word from all the emergency crews today. The rain and precipitation has allows trucks 70 trucks out in lake county alone to treat some of those trouble spots. Bridges, overpasses, we have seen those. Here is a trouble spot here. For 40 westbound at sunnybrook road, you can see two lanes closed. That is due to some icy conditions on for 40 westbound. Emergency officials have been saying that for 40 and 495 have been in their words, like iceskating rinks this morning. It does not take a lot of ice to cause major problems. You just need a thin sheet and it is a big problem. Another camera here on 440. This is for 40 westbound. Obviously, a big delay here that some of the accidents that we are also finding our cameras that we can reach. 40. 85 and 40. Over to our mapping system, we can show you our road weather index. Right now to the north. Thats no a condition, all of that pink that you can see dealing with the ice. Nobody can drive on ice. It is not fun. We are seeing delays all morning long. I just got a message from one of my facebook friends, who says there is a four car accident in shannon county. Chapman county. Fulls are spotting issues and 264 westbound, has been very busy this morning as well with a lot of accidents. For 40 eastbound at western boulevard. If you can stay in, it does make a difference for the emergency crews. John lets see what is happening in wake county. Barbara along i4 95, what is going on now . We had as many as four accidents this morning alone. At one time, south new hope road this portion is closed. We are starting to see some backups heading eastbound on 495. Earlier, we saw the backups heading westbound. The westbound traffic has started to ease up but we did have bumpertobumper traffic earlier out here. Numerous accidents in this area reports of 45 accidents in wake county this morning alone. Most of those are minor. We are getting reports that for 95 is shutdown between smithfield road. We saw a gentleman walking to work over the bridge saying he wanted to avoid the mess because of the traffic, all the accidents out there. We have given been given getting reports of sleet. Police have blocked off portions of the road. It was somebody who tried to drive by here. Because they dont want people to drive in this area. One officer described this as a sheet of ice. I am walking over to the Police Vehicle here and i want you to look down here. Mess here, and that was the case on our windshield wipers. You might experience some of that this morning. Make sure you stay safe out there. If you can, stay at home. If you dont have to go to work today, if your kids are staying in, try to stay indoors so you avoid these accidents. Live in raleigh, Gloria Rodriguez. Barbara lets go to Anthony Wilson now, live in carry. You have seen an accident, right . It is not just an accident. We counted at least 15 vehicles here that wiped out on black ice. That truck, upside down as you see there, at the front of a litter the side of this road. We are really close to carry. Raleigh pd are responding to the man inside that truck, who i have tried to get on camera, is ok. He was coming across the bridge there, hit somebody, spun out, did not do a thing. He is remarkably unhurt. That is the man standing right there next to the man in the yellow jackets. They are looking at amazement at that truck. If you look directly behind that truck where all the flashing lights are, that is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cars. At least three across their. Camera range. All these people hit the ice. Video journalists first got here and we have been very careful as we have been telling you. Feet, the ice was definitely treacherous. Very slippery. If we had difficulty walking out here, you are looking at the results of what happened when that lucky man who was able to get out of that truck safely, hit some ice and there wasnt a thing he could do about it. He was trying to get to durham and that is the result. As far as we know, and we are still checking, as far as we know, nobody is hurt. That truck really made me think that the man inside had to be in a bad way. But he is standing in front of that yellow truck you see with the flashing lights and able to talk. But doesnt want to talk about it on camera. We have been telling you all morning long, dont drive if you dont have to. Someone started spinning, and it the damage to the truck, the cars, repairable. Your life, not so much. You could be badly hurt out there or even worse. Again, i have seen several accidents on abc 11 and this was about the worst. Apparently, nobody is hurt. A real eyeopener here on 40 near u. S. One. Barbara thank you. Something it hadnt seen in a long time. John we will be checking back with anthony. Video just into us. This is an overturned pickup truck on southbound i85 at red mill road in Durham County. We were talking to that spokesperson for the Durham County sheriffs office. She mentioned a very slick area, barbara this is a car on old oxford road in Durham County. We did talk to that spokesperson. There were not any particular roads but it is so widespread that you dont have to get out. The roads are slick and they look deceiving in some areas. John lets continue our coverage now. Snow on the ground in roxboro. Barbara one of two counties in our winter storm warning. The first alert storm chaser there, how are the roads rob . Good morning. It is slick. I have been traversing the Northern Counties all morning and coming out of durham, it looked as if durham crews going north towards first and county, i encountered what you see now in front of me. Those slide side rows have not been touched. Things are very slick out there, very dangerous. Up. About 630 or so six 30 or sleet. Now, just like, freezing rain. Things are pretty much slick, snowcovered roads, and very slippery. If you dont have to go out, dont go out. I have seen a lot of pickup trucks that are lightweight, skidding, sliding, not making it up the hill. That is not what you want to do, obviously. If someone were to pull out in we are going to continue to follow the situation in the northern county. We will be back with you a little later with another report. Right now, breaking news one in roxboro. Barbara it is 7 45 right now. Winter storm coverage continues john coverage. John what is going on out there . Don some. And seeing anything, others are seeing a mess. This is actually looking at whether one. We want to switch to whether three. I want to show you facebook posts that have been posted. This is up in spurred oxford. You can see snow out the back too. Thank you to tina for sending that in. We got this one from tim dickerson. Stay home. You can see what he has got. We will throw it into motion. Live look at the most powerful radar. Down towards fayetteville and clinton you can see it shut off. Back here in two into hoke and more county, expect this freezing rain to work through. Purple, you have got some freezing rain. Lots of ice on the roads out there. Switching to sleet to the north. Into downtown raleigh under a wetky, those little balls bouncing their. Dew points at 19, 80 6 humidity. Numbers from across the region, 25 in roxboro. 23 chapel hill. 26 in fayetteville, 26 in to the south, it is filling in. The surface temperatures are below freezing. It is freezing on contact. Most of the snow is flying now up through portions of virginia. We see this moisture down into South Carolina and pockets of moisture go your way all day long. We will see that switching over but right now we have got these pockets of freezing rain. As we go into the afternoon, we are seeing the rain switch over to freezing rain and sleet. In parts of Cumberland County into robinson county. By 9 00 tonight, we have mainly rain across the region. Anyone seeing ice on the ground, by tomorrow morning, tomorrow morning is going to be messier for the commute. We will see this line of showers work through. Might even get a rumble of thunder tomorrow. 13 inches of snow, sleet. It is switching over to sleet up here. Less than an inch as you get through wake county. Accumulating precipitation will change over to freezing rain, ice accumulation. The ice accruing in spots down south, but this will mainly be a rain event. The surface map shows that frontal boundary lifting north. Warmer air as it does. That is going to bring heavy rain tomorrow and possibly some thunderstorm activity as well. In raleigh, we see temperatures climbing. Mid20s by now. That wintry mix as we go into we start to pick up as we climb above freezing. Temperatures will be above freezing. We will melt it off late day. 40 today in smithfield, 60 in tyler city. 42 in goldsboro and north, 40 in carrboro. Up, all rain around. 40 in roxboro. Your sevenday forecast powered by accuweather shows temperatures tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow back into the upper 50s. If we could look at whether three, we have got the sevenday forecast. 50 eight tomorrow and we get near 60 as we go to the weekend. 55 on wednesday, thursday 51. 63 to return saturday into sunday. Take a while to climb and it is not going to rain all the time. The ground is cold enough, everything is freezing on contact. Barbara people thought there was not anything out there. Don all you need is one slicks bought. It takes such a small amount of ice. That is what we have been seeing all morning long. Two of my friends work at a hospital and they are saying it is treacherous on the way in. They are essential. They have to go to the hospital. They saw massive pileups on their weight in. 40 on u. S. 70. This is u. S. 70 eastbound. Those were the first to freeze this morning. Those are the troubled spots that the dot is trying to work on. We spoke with the dot earlier this morning. Now that the rain and precipitation has shut off for now, that is allowing them an opportunity to get an upper hand on these icy spots. But ice is no joke. U. S. 70 closed on that overpass there due to that accident. The driver of that car just getting out and assessing the damage. We can take you to glenwood avenue, for 40 eastbound. Give yourself plenty of extra time if you are heading to work today. Someone saw a gentleman walking across the bridge there and he told me it was quicker to get to work by walking than by driving. Backups and accidents out there. Give yourself plenty of extra time and we will stay out here. We will bring you the very latest and hopefully you will we will not have to report on accidents this morning. That is something new we just see what is happening this instant. So many accidents you cannot report them all. Closing or on delay. You are closed. Of your screen. Together. Don schwenneker breaking this storm down. One of those bridges overpass as well. Road conditions because you cant cover them all, you can cover call 511 and that is with the dot and you can pinpoint your road and it will give you Road Conditions there and it will help you out on this monday. Lets go to Anthony Wilson in carry. Cary. We have a different angle. We are looking towards what you are about to see right now. This is as close as we can get because it is awkward. Lets see if we can show that to you. Over here, there is a car on the lefthand side of the screen, a truck, and at the top of the screen if you see those flashing blue lights. I can see at least six other vehicles all wiped out. That is the off ramp from u. S. One heading to ward north i40. This is one of our cameras here on breaking news one. We would get closer except it is another example of what is happening out here because of black ice. We, earlier, were at another location where there were 15 vehicles. Upside down. That is on my Facebook Page. If you want to see that rack. Amazingly, that wreck if you want to see that wreck. Nobody was hurt. Pickup truck was completely upside down. The man inside that truck, he didnt want to talk about what happened to him but he was ok. Again, what you are looking at right now, Raleigh Police on the scene right here and elsewhere. If you are essential personnel and need to get to work like a hospital or a first responder, you know what the deal is, but everybody who doesnt have to drive, take it from us. You dont want to get out here and run into some black ice. These are people we are looking at right now. Lets see if we can switch cameras and give you an idea of what is happening on the road. This is our camera here on breaking news one. We are looking at i40 right now. These folks are the only ones who are out here. We drove through that section that we were talking about before. There are at least 15 vehicles wiped out on that section of i40 near u. S. One. If you look to the left side of the screen, you will see that we went through there a few minutes ago, the responders were in the process of getting it out of there. There was a lot of damage to all those cars and trucks. I spoke to the gentleman who were involved. They were pretty shaken up. You are looking right now. Please be careful. Dont come out if you dont have to. We are going to keep patrolling the streets where there are, as you heard, too many rex to show every single one. One. We also have orange, cumberland, where things are slippery. Watch it on tv, dont get out here and try to do it yourself unless you are an essential person who needs to be at a job where lives can be saved. Here and send it back to you. In wake county, Anthony Wilson. John too many wrecks to show you but we are showing you a number of them. Gloria . We have already driven past several rex out here wrecks out here. You can see that vehicle there. The vehicle hit the Center Divider. This is a oneperson accident. You can see that vehicle totally damaged. There have been no major injuries on many of these occasions with these accidents. In wake county there have been at least 45 accident this morning alone. Most of these, minor accidents, we dont like to see any accidents but it is wonderful that nobody has gotten seriously injured. The Raleigh Police department is can. Especially, try to stay off the where we are getting many of those accidents. Our camera in front of us, our front camera here, you can see traffic is moving at this time. We have seen many backups particularly on 495 heading eastbound and westbound. There was a portion their closed. In the last hour, they have reopened that portion of the road, however there are still backups. At least for accidents at one time on 495 a loan. Alone. To many accidents, and as always we want you to be very careful, drive slow. I talked to a gentleman who was walking to work because he said that is safer. If you can work at home, try to do so. I am posting updates on my Facebook Page so i am posting live videos. Gloria rodriguez wtvd. Also, twitter, gloria abc 11. Be sure to follow me. I will be updating throughout the morning. John thank you for the update. Barbara our coverage continues we are going to show john nicole carr tweeting a video heading to the scene of a major crash shutting down the northbound lanes of i95 in Cumberland County. This is a standstill on 95. We are trying to get to this accident we heard over the scanners between exit 58 and 61. Our car is way back there. It is way back there. We are just trying to get to this accident, get some video. This is the hold up on 95. John that is nicole carr. We will be checking back when she gets an update. Look at the line of cars there. Barbara there are a lot of john one of the two counties in our area under a winter storm warning. Rob is life in the first alert storm chaser. Well, with good reason, we are under a winter storm warning. Snowcovered roads, 13 inches of snow on the ground. You see this truck fishtailing as he is trying to navigate the 501. So far, it has been generally like this in the Northern Counties. Snowcovered roads, roxboro crews have been out treating in town, but for the most part, this is what we see. The side roads have not been touched by crews yet. It is a treacherous drive up here. On the windshield, we begin to get a lot of heavier freezing rain. I came up here, started venturing up about 4 30 in the morning. Got to the roxboro town limits end around 6 30, the snow changed to freezing rain and sleet. Now, i just have moderate freezing rain. I expect conditions to get fairly worse as the onboard temperature gauge on first alert storm chaser says 22 degrees. As the road is slushy and slippery, it is going to crossed over and be icy. I noticed the car wiggling side to side here. So, as we have been saying all morning to drivers, please if you dont have to get out, stay in. Let the crews do what they have to do. Leave the roads clear for emergency vehicles because if you clogged up the roads, they cannot get to where they need to get to. I know roxboro and the people appear are used to this in the conditions are deceptive. It seems like you are going along fine and then you hit an icy spot and you fishtail out like that pickup truck was doing in front of me. Some of these portions of the road that actually look clear, the temperature is low enough now that the roadway could potentially freeze over. As we have been saying all morning, please be patient. If you dont have to go out, please say in. Stay in. For now, that is what is going on. John thanks a lot. Barbara new video of a crash on i40. This is the eastbound lane between highway 55 and the durham freeway. Completely wedged between the bank of trees there. No word on injuries. It is deceiving. John and overturned pickup truck on southbound i85 at red mill road in Durham County. There is an ambulance on the scene. Barbara a car off the road on old oxford road. This happened earlier this morning. It was just very slick and people were going too fast. John we are still well below freezing. I was talking with one of our folks behind the scene and she said the biggest problem was the cautious people staying over to the right and then there are people with a false sense of security because they see raindrops on their windshield. They think it is just rain. Our videographer up there, this is a look out his windshield. The temperature is 22 on his sensor. You have got raindrops on the windshield. It is following into air. That instantly isis things over. Isis ices things over. It is not a problem. But when you touch something below freezing, instantly it freezes. That gives us an idea of what is going on. Lets look at the next 12 hours. We will go to whether three and talk about the next 12 hours. In the triangle, those temperatures gradually warm. 29 degrees by lunch time is the air temperature. We will see rain falling that should help to melt the ice. Into the afternoon, we will 40s up towards 8 00. By 4 00, we are up to 45. The fall will occur faster for you in the sandhills. We are looking at radar, and we are really seeing that freezing rain down to the south. It hasnt done much throughout the morning. Down into those areas now, around pinehurst, you can see freezing rain. Just in the past half hour, you can see this building across the region. That will continue to lift off to the north and east and unfortunately that means it is slipping across lee, sanford, pittsboro as well. Carry cary, those have freezing rain working through. It is working through northeastern wake county. However, you are seeing that switch over to freezing rain. Into the Northern Counties, where it has been mainly snow throughout the morning, sleet and freezing rain starts to transition in. That little ice, as it gets on those frozen surfaces. Northeast winds, nine miles an hour. Wind chills dont affect ice. It feels like it is in the teens. Roxboro, 24 if youre heading out the door in chapel hill. 27 in fayetteville. Watching back here, if we zoom it out, we get more of a sense of what is going on across the carolinas. Through the north to virginia. Some of this moisture coming off the ocean, that will keep it freezing rain throughout the day. The first alert predictor forecast model, by 2 00 this afternoon, should be just rain and it should be warm enough to melt any ice. As we get into Northern Counties, it is rain but it is falling onto a frozen surface and we are getting that freezing tonight. It will be warm enough and going to be problematic. Not because of ice but because of heavy rainfall with the frontal boundary. Anytime we see rain during the morning commute, that causes problems. As far as how much we will see, we are down to 13 inches in virginia. Left and roanoke rapids, factor in the sleet and ice, you have got that winter storm warning. Less than an inch of wintry mix, but we will see ice and wintry mix. You could see ice accumulating in several spots on untreated roadways. Right now, that will change over to rain by late morning. This puts of warm air will push up south from the south. It will cross the region into the 40s by tonight. For the rest of the day, those temperatures stay in the 20s in raleigh and then you are about 30 degrees this afternoon. We get above freezing and we will see the rain around eventually start to melt things. Temperatures in the 30s today, 38 in Holly Springs, 37 in durham, further south you go the 40s by this afternoon down in fayetteville and if you go north, you will stay in the lowmid 30s. You could have snow changing to that wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet. Tonight, temperatures will go up. We will see them going up with rain around. Those winds will get breezy. 44 fayetteville. Your first alert forecast showing temperatures tomorrow, 20 degrees warmer. 58 degrees. Sunlight to end the day. Wednesdaythursdayfriday. Temperatures back into the 60s. With us. Can you imagine if it wasnt president s day . Into work as normal . Is considered a, there is no snow day. These kids today, there is no so day snow day. One of them was spinning, so she was texting me early and i said you probably should wait. They are essential personnel. She saw a lot of rex going in wrecks going in. It is not the day to stay in, it is and i stay and you dont want to be out on this. We have been tracking dozens of accidents. That is our live camera and you can see a mass that is going on there on u. S. 64 at 264 due to a over 240 at u. S. One around the crossroads area. Live cameras through that. They have been seeing accidents, so you can be seeing them standing there. Anthony wilson was live with an overturned car. To our mapping system we go. It just looks like rain. On 95 north downs, just after exit 58, that is i295, getting off of i4 northbound, getting on around exit 61. A big delay shut down there due to treacherous conditions. 40 eastbound and u. S. 70, that is also an icy spot on one of those overpasses. If you do need to check, you can always call 511 and pinpoint your roads. All that pink, that is the ice. John speaking of accidents we are going to get more now from the perspective of Sergeant Michael aker of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. I know you guys have been very busy this morning. We have, unfortunately. Barbara what are you doing to respond and help prevent more accidents . We have troopers across the state responding to calls, across the triangle we have investigated over 70 collisions. That number is continuing to climb throughout the morning hours. As you mentioned earlier, u. S. 64 is a trouble spot. 264 in Wilson County. We are seeing freezing rain we are asking motorists in the event that they do have to get out, please be cognizant of your speed. People are traveling down the highway that is not affected by the communal asian of ice, but they hit an icy patch and lose control. Please be cognizant of your speed, take your time getting to work. If you can stay at home, please stay at home john . John in the event that you are on a traffic accident, what do you do . You pull over, you stay where you are . We would ask motorists, if there is no personal injury involved, move their vehicles off to the shoulder. Stay inside of the vehicle if possible. If they have to get out, please move far away from the vehicle want other motorists to lose control sliding into their vehicle and causing any pedestrian collisions. If they have to get out of the vehicle, please be aware of oncoming traffic. We are asking motorists to look if they are involved in a collision. If there are personal injuries involved, we dont want anybody moving anybody around. In the event that they are involved. Barbara Sergeant Michael baker with the Highway Patrol. Thank you. Thank you. Barbara he thinks it will go up. John now, it is 8 29. Your buddy ron once said he could install your ceiling fan. He couldnt. And that one time ron said another chili dog was a good idea. Yeah, it wasnt. So when ron said youd never afford a john deere tractor, you knew better. Now ron does too. The e series. Legendary john deere quality. Unexpected low price. E series compact tractors come with coverage. 24 degrees. John crashes continue to happen on the raleigh beltline. Barbara at least two trashes their crashes there. One driver is still in the car. You saw us a half hour ago and there was accident here. I want you to take a live look. We are on the beltline by glenwood avenue. You could see one of the drivers there inside the vehicle. Police have arrived. You can see that driver lost control and went off the side of the road. You can see damage to the front and the back of that car. Police are helping this driver out. I want to show you the roof camera because this is less than another vehicle went through the same thing. This vehicle lost control at the side of the road. We are also seeing damage to that vehicle. It looks like that person was either taken to the hospital or sent home. Nobody was in the vehicle. About a mile or way or so, there was another vehicle that hit the sensor divider Center Divider and there was extensive damage to the front. We are seeing many many accidents. You are seeing this here at the beltline near glenwood avenue. It seems like you are driving less than a mile and come across different accident. Be very careful on the roadways. We have had 45 incident reports from this morning alone throughout lake county. We will keep you updated about i am posting live video and that is on Gloria Rodriguez wcvb. Also 20 or wtvd. Back to you in the studio. Barbara lets go to Anthony Wilson live now, i40 at gorman. I am on gorman, not on the interstate. The black car, we understand, spun out as it approached the wreck between the first cars. One of those cars hit the other. The black car coming down gorman may have been approaching on ice. Somehow, it spun and wound up in the ditch. Nobody is hurt, but if you look someone taking baby steps because we are told that person portion of gorman is like a sheet of ice. The police have this portion of gorman blocked off. We were led to get closer but we are trying to be safe as well and as you can tell from the moisture on the windshield here, on top of the ice we have what looks like sleet, or a wintry mix coming down. 24 degrees outside. The elements will all add up to even more slippery conditions before things get better out here. Another reminder. It is really dangerous to drive out here, especially when you cant tell there is ice under your feet or wheels until it is too late. Work to the wise, if you dont there have been too many wrecks. This is just the latest one on gorman street and another reminder that if you dont have to drive, please dont do it. Keeping an eye on things throughout wake county this morning. For now, it is still slippery, still hazardous. Live on gorman street, Anthony Wilson. John 8 35, we are going to take a quick break. An update from the fayette regional airport, we got a press john 8 38 and 24 degrees. Barbara we have a press release about flights. The United Airline flights have been canceled until the 7 00 p. M. Flight tonight. John the fayetteville regional airport, they say 70 flights have been canceled. Always call ahead. Barbara especially today, make sure your flight is on time. John Don Schwenneker joins us here. Don there is a false sense of rain. In many places it is just raining right now, liquid from the sky. Ground temperatures are so cold. We are still in the 20s. It is freezing on contact. I have had people say i have got to work. If you are one of those folks that cant get behind a plow, if you have to be out, make sure and go slow. I am not saying 15 minutes early. If you have a fourwheeldrive, stop. Keep those speeds way down. This is a perfect example of that freezing rain. You can see drops on the lens even though there is plenty of snow on the ground. It is changing over to rain and it looks like we are seeing a couple pockets of sleet bounce off that windshield. Morning. A live look at first alert doppler. In the western parts of chatham stopped. It has become more organized. One of my viewers in Holly Springs says we have got into hoke county, across wake county, it is all freezing rain. We start to see freezing rain mixing with sleet. One of our viewers in south bill tells me there is freezing rain as well. We are getting reports of sleet, that is what those bouncy balls are. 19 is the dew point, 80 humidity. Numbers across the region this morning, 24 in chapel hill. 27 smithfield, 27 fayetteville, 26 in goldsboro and 27 in colebrook rapids. We are seeing this back here. I am going to zoom it out. Moisture extends into South Carolina and it is not much but these Little Pockets of rain and that rain falling into that 20 degree air touching something that is frozen. Notice this back here to the west. We are not going to see that cold front and heavy rain until tomorrow morning. As we go through the morning, into 2 00, we are seeing freezing rain. It is warm enough at the surface that we are starting to melt things. That lifts across us and if we did drive in this morning, it is going to be better for you. Still going to be raining in spots but the temperatures should be warm enough. Into tomorrow, 6 00 a. M. , our model has been very consistent about getting this line of heavy rain through. You could see a half inch to in additional inch of rain an additional inch of rain. As far as total accumulations, this is basically on. You are still seeing some sleet in northern county. A wintry mix into the central park and down in fayetteville, it is freezing rain. This warm front lifting north is going to push those temperatures today. We are being in the 20s this morning into the 30s. Overnight, we are in the 40s. Your forecast looks like this the rest of the day. By lunchtime, we are below freezing in raleigh. In the sand hills, it should be melting by lunchtime. Into the afternoon, the temperatures climb into the 30s. Across the region, this will be afternoon temperatures, 40 in wintry mix changing and into the Northern Counties, changing into a wintry mix. Tonight, temperatures go up. 40 in roxboro, 44 in fayetteville. Seven day forecast powered by accuweather showing temperatures tomorrow 20 degrees warmer in the afternoon. Wednesday, thursday, friday, lots of sunshine moving in. Pretty typical for this time of year. Saturday into sunday, those temperatures that into the mid 60s. Gradually climb. We wanted to show you a little round of some of our cameras here so you can get an idea of some of the conditions. So many accidents this morning, and a lot of folks start to heed the warning. 5 40 at six, we are seeing and it looks like some snowflakes might be starting to mix in their. This is 540 at you can see it is starting to stick on some of the grassy surfaces and on the side of the road there is a disabled vehicle. A lot of disabled drivers, some folks come up on the ice, and a lot of people just stop because they are not going to continue on ice. It takes a very thin sheet of problems. A lot of bridges and overpasses are in the trouble spots. Look at this road weather index. This is all of the ice. Pink is ice. Light is snow. All these triangles are accidents and issues going on. There are so many we cannot list every single one of them. We will take you out to another d. O. T. Camera so you can see 40 at 70. The ramp is closed. Those all freeze first. This corresponds out earlier. They closed off that ramp. 95 has been a big trouble spot. 95 southbound, there is a lane block there at exit for and again at exit eight. Another lane block, big delays on to 95, it is also shutdown 95 northbound at exit 58 due to a spin out there. On 85 southbound at u. S. 70, the shoulder is closed due to an accident there. That is ramses andrews road between ramsey street and macarthur road. John Gloria Rodriguez is on the western boulevard in west raleigh. Here, a record wrecker situation. We drive eight even even less than a mile. This is western boulevard near carolina avenue in raleigh. Very close to carry, you can see the tow truck getting ready to toe this car. It does not look like a major accident. At this time, traffic is being diverted around that lane because of that incident. We have a roof camera where we can get different shots of that incident. You can see officials here helping out with this situation. They are also driving on the beltline. At least three that we saw in the last 20 minutes. Glenwood avenue, where we had a car that lost control on the side of the road. On the side of the road that lost control and we saw those vehicles. Another accident at six forks road where a different car and severely damaged their. We have seen 45 incidents in lake county. As we are getting more reports of accidents. If you are able to stay off the roads today, please do stay off the roads because not only are we seeing a lot of these accidents, and we definitely dont want to get into an accident, but we also see a lot of backup. It is a good idea as police are saying to try to stay at home today if you can. We are bringing the latest on the roads this morning barbara . Thank you. John Anthony Wilson has been driving around in the capital now . On lane avenue in raleigh. Lets take a look here. You see the road in front of us. We have seen public works crews elsewhere in raleigh today. Putting out another coating of brine. We see evidence of the salt put down by the public works guys trying to give you a better chance of traction. That and some sleep gives some semblance of something to grip. All that considered, it is still slippery out here. Not a whole lot of traffic out here. People might be going back and forth. It is almost 9 00. The wet and slushy would become dangerous. We have been showing you all morning long different wrecks. Most people watching this are. They have got a lot of up and down hills. If you happen to be on one of these sections of wade avenue, it could end badly for you. People are driving, apparently within the speed limit, 35 miles an hour here. As we approach this curve, there was another area where, if you are not careful, you could have some problems. Hats off to the public works crews who have been working very hard trying to get ahead of slippery conditions here. Some of the places where people were driving and it was slippery , they have been cleared. Lets give you an idea of what it looks like out here. To avoid getting out here if you can because the public works crews that we mentioned do need the streets are safe. Not just passable but safe. Look at the tracks. You see all that white between the tracks. You can barely see the blacktop but it is these areas that they are trying to make possible, for emergency vehicles. We have seen several firetrucks and ambulances out this morning. One of the places we have been, such as i40 near u. S. One, we have seen awful rex. Awful wrecks. In the areas that we were, people were hurt. They had some black ice in that area i was talking about. At least 50 vehicles, including a pickup truck spun out. Did tell me he was ok. A little rattled as you might imagine. They are working to clear that area and we got away from their trying to give you a better idea. The intersection of weight and st. Marys, there is a video. You are looking at a portion of that rack which involves at least 15, count them, 15 vehicles on both sides of the road. There are some more wrecked cars over there. A really sit scary situation. I was not in a wreck myself today, but my car spun out. Nobody hit me. That is not something you want to experience. You cant control the car. This is wade avenue, going over the crest of a hill towards downtown. Very wide on his way out to the road, theyre coming off glenwood avenue. We have got a problem as we take neighborhood streets. There was not enough here for people to shovel but they are trying to do what they are passable. Critical personnel will need to be somewhere to help others. Dont come out if you can avoid it. We are about to turn onto capital boulevard and we are heading towards downtown. There are a lot of closures. Schools are closed. Some of the colleges starting reason to be out here but when you ghosts go, go slow. If you have been driving for more than five minutes, this is not the day to speed. This is not the day to tailgate. Take your time. It is going to be there when you arrive. That is our tour. We did not have any wrecks to show you. There will be more before this day is up. Anthony wilson wtvd. My twitter feed, and of course the stations as well. If you want to see what has been video and still pictures up there. You can be safe.
