ground there, cheering, powerless aboard that ship for days. passengers complained of overflowing toilets and unsanitary conditions that were so bad that people slept on the open deck. buses did take passengers to hotels in new orleans and texas. many people were tired, just happy to be on dry land after the horrific ordeal at sea. >> the cabins flooded, they were ankle deep in sewage, it was a mess. everybody was using buckets to do what they had to do. >> it was absolutely horrible having to smell, you know other people's -- the urine, seeing the feces walking down the hall. >> i'm just so happy to be home really. >>reporter: carnival now admits the triumph had been plagued with mechanical problems in weeks leading up to the engine room fire. planned voyages have now been canceled on the 14- story ship. it is headed to a mobile shipyard for assessment. the national transportation safety board is also -- has also opened an investigation. the cruise line gave passengers a full refund, $500 compensation and an apology for what it's worth. sarah and wisdom. >> exactly for what it's worth, sherri. thank you so much. checking our other top stories this morning, authorities in california say the remains in a burned out cabin have been identified as accused murderer christopher dorner. he is the former lapd officer who led authorities on a days- long manhunt after allegedly killing four people. on facebook dorner claimed the murders were revenge killings for being let go from the force. the hunt endd a shootout with officers preventive the cabin went up in flames. in virginia, the search is on for a killer after alexandria police ruled the death of a 94-year-old man a homicide. elmer rohrs was found dead inside his holly street home on wednesday in what appeared to be a violent attack. no arrests have been made in this case, but police have arrested a woman for robbing the home last november. president obama will be at the white house this morning to honor 18 people with the 2012 presidential citizens medal. it's the second highest civilian honor in the nation and given to those who perform extraordinary acts to help their fellow citizens. among those being honored, the six teachers and administrators killed in last year's elementary school shooting in connecticut. several d.c.-area residents will be honored as well. also making headlines this morning, a move by metro to convince the fbi to set up shop in prince george's county. it is not sitting well with everyone. and the d.c. favorites is expanding, ben's chili bowl opening a new location in the area. we'll have more on that when we return. time now 5:38. [ male announcer ] listen to this symphony of flavor: crrkkhshziiiizzlllee. beautiful. shhhhshshshshhshshhhhhsshhhshs. gorgeous! here comes the crescendo. kkerrrrbbuuuuuucraaackkk. just...incredible. pillsbury toaster strudel. if beethoven made breakfast. we are monitoring metro this morning and the agency's real estate committee has approved a deal that could allow a new fbi headquarters to be built in prince george's county. metro owns 78 acres at the green dll belt station and wants to sell that to a developer. in return the developer would build the headquarters. the fbi is looking for a new location, saying the building in d.c. no longer works. the offer from metro is not sitting well with lawmakers in other jurisdictions, though hoping to lure the fbi. one fairfax county supervisor says it appears metro is unfairly lobbying on behalf of prince george's county. in alexandria today city leaders will give an update on plans to revamp the city's waterfront. efforts have been under way now for a wiel to bring new retail and restaurant options to that popular area in oldtown, but they have been met with opposition from residents who worry about increased traffic and some other potential problems. now, some of you will be able to enjoy a popular half smoke at a new location. if you like ben's chili bowl on u street, you're going to love it on eighth street northeast. the popular restaurant will reportedly open a new location by the end of the year at the corner of 10th and h. they will be serving up the same chili and half smokes made popular at the original location. >> i could do one right now. i could eat one of those right now. >> yeah. i am pretty hungry, now that you mention that. i'm starving. while we're talking about food, get ready for this. >> taco bell is rolling out a new menu option, fresh on the heels of its taco shell made out of a dorrito. they're offering a new twist on the junk food favorites. and tucker is talking about the chances of some snow this weekend as well, so you can sit in your house and eat some ben's chili bowl and some taco bell. >> how can you improve on that taco bell? my mom doesn't drink starbucks coffee because she thinks it's too dark, and so i brought her some blonde roast. she loves it now. fredrick and in gaithersburg. it's cold outside, a little frost developing out there as we got some moisture in the atmosphere. no issues with the morning commute. it'll be cool, cold at the bus stop but we're not expecting any rain and/or snow early this morning. things will be changing this afternoon, however, as we're going to get a period of shower activity maybe transitioning to some snow again later today. satellite and radar nice and quiet this morning a few clouds out there. partly sunny to start your day and then we're going to cloud up this afternoon, as we watch our next little storm system now taking shape a frontal system, an area of low pressure will ride along it. there it is. that's going to roll up into our area later this afternoon. so i think by 4:00 or 5:00 today we're going to start to see some showers move in, and, again, i think later tonight, 9:00, 10:00, as the cold air starts to rush in behind it, there is the possibility that we could see a transition from a little rain to a little snow shower activity and there could be some light accumulations by early tomorrow morning, maybe a covering of snow, maybe upwards to an inch in a few spots. bheas going to happen this -- what's going to happen this weekend? the weekend forecast is a very complicated one because we're watching an area of low pressure that's developing along that frontal boundary coming through tonight. there's some indication that it's going to be close enough during the day tomorrow that it could throw some snow back towards the washington area by saturday afternoon, so parts of the area, particularly lower eastern shore at greatest risk here for some snow during the afternoon tomorrow. it's all about where that area of low pressure sets up and we just don't -- mother nature just not showing her cards yet. we're not sure exactly where that area of low pressure is going to set up, but it is certainly possible we could see an area of low pressure on saturday afternoon and that could bring snow to the area, very little snow. could be some measurable snow for parts of the area late tomorrow and tomorrow night. so definitely keep watching the forecast here in the next 24 hours or so. 54 today. we'll definitely get this right, early sun, afternoon clouds, late day showers. don't look at me julie. winds out of the west at five miles per hour. 33 tonight, rain transitioning to snow, much colder overnight, west winds five to 10. clouds tomorrow, and we'll have to see how close that snow tracks to the coast tomorrow afternoon. sunday guaranteed to be traffic is starting to slow just a little bit below speeds between 50 and 123. trouble well north of town, eastbound on 340 between 17 and 180. that's where we have the crash, the right side of the roadway is blocked. 270 still in good shape, no issues reported right now coming out of hyattstown. let's pop up the cameras quickly. northbound i-95, leaving the prince william parkway out of woodridge no issues here as you cross the occuquan. again, germantown south of 118 towards 124. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> thanks, julie. a medical breakthrough, the food and drug administration has approved the country's first artificial retina. the new device gives vision to thousands of blind adults whose eyesight was peakded by a genetic disorder. it's designed to help with the disease, the person's ability to tell light from dark. the product has already been planted in 50 adults overseas and could be available in the u.s. later on this year. it's apparently a match made in food heaven, doritoes and taco bell. they plan to roll out a cool ranch-flavored dreeto taco last month. this comes after the nacho cheese dreeto taco launched late last year with nearly 350 million sold. it became the company's most successful product and taco bell and doritoes, maker pepsi, pepsi is the one who makes this, added thousands of jobs last year in order to meet the worth of investments to richmond along with hundreds of jobs. >> and we can't talk about this without talking about robert griffin, iii. the manager says the team is optimistic that rg3 will be back on the field in time for the start the of decision, but that decision will ultimately be left up to doctors. team officials say there is a long way to go as the star continues to recover from a knee injury. they won't rush him back, but there are reports that griffin will be ready to be the starting quarterback as early as week one. now, i get a little worryd about this because ultimately as well, you know it's up to the doctors, ultimately rg3 is the one who knows how his knee feels, and we know he's pushing it, so if he's like i'm great, i'm fine, is he? >> that's going to be the big question. everybody will be excited to see him when he comes back. we just hope he comes back at 100%, whether that's week one or eight or maybe not at all next year. he's such an excited player. he
