Found hanging around several places on campus. The third reported case of a racist act on the campus this school year. Melanie alnwick live in northwest with reaction. Mel . Reporter good morning, guys. Students here on campus say that they are very frus frustrated ad distressed by this incident. Definitely theyre trying to study here for final exams today supposed to be a study day. But this definitely a taconypalmyra pick of discussion. Its weighing heavily on the minds of the Student Community here. The University President called these latest incidents cowardly, did he say despicable act. Well show you pictures that were published in the students newspaper showing bananas hanging on strings tied like nooses. Bananas were found at three locations on campus. They had the words harambe and aka written on them. Aka referring to alpha a predominantly black sore roar the. Back in september a member of the black Student Alliance had ba nan nan thrown at her while the group was preparing to demonstrate in support of black lives matter. Days later, banana was placed at or near a black female stores door in Residence Hall that campus shocked now all of this is resurfacing. Outrageous, horrible. Im surprised that we had it in similar incident that happened again this that happened in the beginning of year. Im hoping the University Takes some action. Having this happen in september and happening again in may as our first black woman student president is taking office is deeply frustrating. Reporter new sja president taylor dunson a member of the aka sorority. In letter to students she said. Last night the black Student Alliance hell a meeting. It wasnt just for black tended media was not allowed on campus to tendon but students provided us with photos you can see very well attended meeting there. And some students told us they really felt that more could have been done after the prior racial incidents in september. Now, we did try to find out from American University how those prior incidents were handled. We were not able to get anyone to give us information on that. We can tell you that when we reported on these stories in september au said in one of the incidents they did handle it through the student conduct process. Sort of tells that you it was handled within the university and au president saying in Statement Last night that they are bringing in d. C. Police to help them investigate this incident. So perhaps theyre taking it to that next level that some of these students would like to s see. They also again holding that meeting this afternoon where uthey promised to give more information. That is at noon today. And tonight also there is a where they can hear from members of the community as well. Live on the American University campus, im melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. All right, mel, thank you for that. Wisdom . Thank you very much. Race, racial equality employment and criminal justice some of the issues that affect minority communities and for the last 40 years local nonprofit the National Urban league has been documenting and analyzing statistics on the progress proa greg of the issues the issues that directly affect the black commune in each year they release their finds in a semi annual publication call the state of the black community. This years report is being release dad. Later this morning, tv1 and the National Urban league will be hosting a sell televised town hall taping that will become a twohour special that will air on tv1. But before those cameras roll the author and Georgetown University professor michael err ick dyson along with mark morrell National Urban League President join us live to talk about the event. Thats going on win the black community. Good morning to both of you gentlemen. Good morning. Lets address melanies story. What was happening on the campus of American University . We saw with the bananas being placed at the black sorority on campus after they elected the first black student to lead black female student to lead the Student Government association. Your reaction to Something Like that happening on a campus at this day and time . Well, i teach at georgetown, and obviously thats a dis disturbing fact. Beyond that, you know, people make light of save spaces and micro aggressions and they say whats a micro aggression. Cant you deal with it its like a paper cut. It will cut you very fine. But the bleeding begins and then time after time after time a banana seems innocuous to people but its an act of racial aggression. The campus president is identifying it as a coward the act and organizing student bodies to respond to it in a timely matter ton address the larger atmoser atmosphere in which we exist given president we have in the United States of america right now has allowed this kind of aggression to come forward. Right. Weve had increase in a spike in hate crimes in the United States since the beginning of the year, and this all sort of fits in the atmosphere enables. It sort of says this is okay its reprehensible. It should be condemn. It doesnt fit in modern ame america. All right. This is just one of the issues that the black community is facing. In the state of the black america that you guys are going to be talking about tonight, economics, jobs, education, all of those things. What have your findings shown so far. Its important that, you know, change is incremental so the index just the fact nos fake news stats. Right. Show that educational disparities have slightly narrowed, oh so slightly. Health disparities have slightly narrowed. Economic gaps remain almost the same as they were 40 years ago. So the challenges are very years state of black america report a report card on barack obama and we looked at things at the beginning of his term and at the end of his term and really measured whether there had been progress and according to that, when it comes to economics and education and health care, there was progress for the black community. We began in a trough of the great recession. So i report covers 2016. My comments on the current state of affairs are that we must resist any roll back. We must protect our progress. Whats happening at the justice department, the roll backs in education, the possibility that in the fall you could have deep budget cuts that really impact people programs. They are causes for concern but theyre also causes for us to be printed responsible activist its and push back. Professor, how do you become a principal responsible act activist . What can you do from the ground level to push back against some of this that may affect people in the community. Join the National Urban league and [ laughter ] number one. Funding, right. Naacp, National Action network, melanie campbells black womans round table. There are multitude of groups out there trying to address these issues. But as individuals, look, do what the president does. Get on your twitter. Get on your social media. Now thats one response. Some people mistake social media for social active you have fifty seven. Its a means towards an end not an end in itself. So then begin to, you know, think serious and strategically about these issues. Write your congress people. Talk to your local representative. Talk, gosh to your local Council Meeting when it comes to the distribution of resources, that mr. More yall is speaking about, what weve got to think about how people in congress especially our black representatives leverage their authority to be able to make a set of demands as theyve done 100 things or very important for the president to address for people to read this report and look at that economic disparity and then talk about the ways in which we can address them both system klee and in terms of the redress in terms of Early Childhood education being expelled from school early on. All kinds of activism that can be engaged. Weve got the main street more shall plan our comprehensive plan to invest 4 trillion into our communities over a tenyear period. Okay. We encourage people to take look at that plan. Theres all this conversation about infrastructure. A plan for urban america. The plan has been put out by the National Urban league. And then in addition to n well be taping today a show which will broadcast on may 31st on tv1 between 8 00 and 10 00 p. M. So very exciting. There are opportunities through social media. Right. Through if you will viewing the report online and now through our Television Show for people to be part of this conversation. Lets not leave this point behind. People have got to vote. Right. All the social activism, all the social media is important but at the end of the day, its who sits in the seat that has the power to make the decision that comes through voting. All right. Gentlemen, thank you very much. Mr. Dyson, mr. More yall appreciate it. We have the information about when that show is going to air. Its going to be taped. Its going to air may 31st 8 00 p. M.
