that was pretty easy. certainly a soggy start to the workweek and a lot of heavy rain out there and some strong winds which could make a mess of your morning commute today. tony will tell us when all of this will clear out. not mardi gras but it might look a lot like it. you wouldn't know it by looking at the streets of the french quarter last night. the saints celebrating a big win yesterday. fox down in that area. power a problem around the d.c. area. a transformer blew in gaithersburg early this morning on brown street. right now, pepco says there are about 5500 customers in montgomery and prince george's counties and the district that are in the dark. dominion virginia says it has about 1900 customers without power. fakier county schools in virginia are delayed three hours today and that includes the high school exams. they will start three hours late. so a couple of extra hours to study there. the fauquier county sheriff's office says there is flooding and downed trees and power lines. >> page and rappahannock county schools are both delayed by two hours this morning as well. got a lot of debris out there with the wind coming down and the rain as heavy as it has been. >> there is a wind advisory that is in effect until 10:00 this morning. tucker barnes was just checking. we've had a 44-mile per hour wind gust at dulles airport. very strong winds. sustained winds are about 25 miles per hour this morning so we'll have some -- continue to have some problems out there. let me show you hd radar. we'll show you where the rain is. most of the area is seeing light to moderate rain but there are some pockets of heavy rain. those are the areas that you see in yellow and orange. now, right around the washington area, the rain is has dissipated at this moment. we've got a little bit of a break there in the district and inside the beltway. elsewhere, continuing to see rain showers and more rain will be moving through during the course of the morning hos i think until at least mid- morning, maybe late morning before most of this pushes out of here. advisories, now, there is a lot going on as far as advisories go and frankly, the computers i think are a little bit out of whack because of everything that is going on. simply put, we have a flood watch that is in effect, a flash flood watch in effect until 1:00 this afternoon. there is actually a coastal flood warning in effect until 6:00 this evening along the piedal potomac, portions of the chesapeake bay and the like. farther out to the west, that area in red, that is a flood warning that is in effect until a little bit later on this morning. and i mentioned the wind advisories. so a lot going on. right now, reagan national airport, mild start to the day. 60degrees, believe it or not. that is not a mistake. 06degrees, humidity, 83%. you will feel it when you step out there. winds out of the south at 26 miles per hour. your forecast for today, rain this morning. i would not rule out a thunderstorm or two early this morning. windy conditions becoming just breezy later today. temperatures falling through the day back into the 50s by later -- or not by later this afternoon but by this trying to get into work this morning. if you are traveling in virginia, this is the live shot out of newington headed northbound up to the capital beltway. on 95 itself, lane are open. already slowdowns occurring as you travel north. we had reports of a tree down eastbound 66 at the intersection with 50 fair oak. we had reports out of fauquier county of a number of trees down along 28 at 640, 818. if you come up to an intersection where you find standing water, we strongly encourage you not to attempt to drive through it. 50 and 15 at gilbert's corner shut down. this is a live shot of 270. really getting whipped around because of the wind out there. southbound 270 leaving 109, we had reports of an incident here in the left lane. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. we are following a developing story out of the middle east this morning where a plane crashed with 90 people on board. all have died. the ethiopian airlines plane went down right after takeoff in stormy weather. several rescue boats found 23 bodies so far. witnesses report seeing a fireball go into the ocean but the lebanese president is ruling out sabotage. most of the victims are lebanese or ethiopian. the wife of the french ambassador was also on board. osama bin laden is threatening new attacks against the united states and trying to take credit for the christmas day failed bombing attempt. the terror leader put out a new audio message carried by the al- jazeera network but there are a lot of questions over that claim that he planned the detroit bombing. intelligence an lichts say the so-called underwear bomber was actually trained by an al-qaeda group in yemen. more grim news coming out of haiti as truckers are filling mass graves with bodies. >> the government says it has buried more than 150,000 quake victims and that does not include those buried by relatives or killed in the outlying areas. a global army of aid workers igetting food into people's hands but acknowledges efforts are falling short of what is needed. over the weekend, the haitian government said that rescue operations were ending but international teams continue their work p one team found a shop clerk. he drove under a desk at the grocery store where he worked he survived by drinking soda, beer and eating cookies and says his faith pulled him through. let's look at some other stop stories this morning. police in baltimore have made arrests in the weekend murder of a marine. police say these men ould all face first degree murder charges for the stabbing death of private first class careious ray. ray was at a house party for his 0th birthday. he grew up in montgomery county and was stationed here in d.c. a big change at the top for metro. the federal government has appointed two board members. it is part of an agreement to secure $150 million a year in federal money. the federal board members do not have veto power and cannot become chairman of the board. one of the members is mortimer downey. he will join us live next hour. the saints are marching straight to the super bowl. >> sends the saints to the super bowl. >> for the first time in the team's 43-year history, the sane are going to the super bowl. the saints with the win, 31-28. as you would expect, the streets of the french water were packed with fans celebrating that win. mardi gras is not until february 16th but some say the crowds last night rivaled any party the city has seen. >> the saints will face off against the colts. it will be the second time indy has gone to the big game in the headlines. the race to save two sensitive wildlife areas in southeast texas after a huge crude oil spill. nearly 500,000-gallons of oil spilled into the water when two towing vessels collided saturday. plastic walls and oil-sucking skimmer boats are being used to safeguard a lake that is a crucial breepd breeding ground. president obama's state of the union is just one reason why he will be skipping jury duty. he was summoned in his home state of illinois. a white house official says they've alerted the court he will not able to make t the president was scheduled for jury duty beginning today. security officials want to make it clear, a diverted plane hadding in to do with terrorism. that flight left d. dulles on saturday ledded for las vegas but it had to stop in denver when a man tried to open a door in the middle of a flight. authorities released the man from medical evaluation and so far, no charges have been filed. coming up next, a closer look at the devastation julie has the commute as well. we're back at 6: now on this monday morning. it is wet, windy and it is actually kind of warm outside this morning. >> it is. our temperature remains at 60 degrees this hour so the temperature is pleasant. if we just had that, people would be going oh, it's wonderful. but yeah, rainy, windy. wind are pretty strong across the area. i'll show you those numbers in just a moment. first, let's start with the advisories in effect. they are numerous. we'll focus on the wind advisory which is in effect until 10:00 this morning. the washington area, all the areas in brown including prince william county. we don't know what is wrong with the computer that it won't fill that county in but all of these counteddies are under a wind advisory. gusts up to 45 or even over 45 miles per hour. sustained winds will be roughly about 40 miles per hour. there you go. 45-mile per hour gusts at dulles airport. we are seeing some of the downed power lines and tree limbs. generally, the tree limbs snap and they bring the power lines down. that is what we're seeing and hence the wind advisory. let's take a look at temperatures. as i said, they are quite comfortable. they won't stay where they are all day long but right now, temperatures, # 0 degrees in d.c. 60degrees in d.c. manassas is at 61. -- 60 degrees in d.c. we've had about a third of an inch of rain in the area so far. there are pockets of heavy rain out there and those will be training through during the morning hours. the forecast for washington for today, rain, heavy at times, early and then some afternoon sunshine. still breezy in afternoon with our temperatures falling into the 50s during the late morning and afternoon hours. your five-day forecast, it's cold front that is coming through bringing all this weather with it and you will really feel the effects of the cold front tonight t take a while for that cold air to work its way in but by tonight, we'll be in the 30s. that is a pretty good change from the 60s to the 30s. friday, mid-30s and a chance of snow on friday. now, let's go to julie wright and get an update on traffic. >> it is not easy out there this morning, tony. we are dealing with wet pavement. we have strong winds, wires, trees down across the highway and then we've got accidents. northbound on 270 before you reach 109, accident activity only has the left lane of two squeezing by. so a left of rubbernecking delays here on the southbound side since this is the rush hour flow but that is contributing to the delay headed down into clarksburg. slow traffic in germantown and montrose road headed down towards the beltway. inner loop to exit onto university boulevard. we had reports of a tree down there. 29 at prelude, signal lights are dark. inbound new york avenue here at bladensburg road, just waiting for the light to change. no incidents to report here. out in virginia, 66 eastbound in marshal, the crash there is blocking the left lane with a mild back-up. still closed off along # 44 at rolling road due to wires down across the highway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. -- still closed off along 644 at rolling road. really feeling the death penaltyth of what is happening in haiti is hard to do unless you see it firsthand,. >> emily trapman is in hatey right now and is sharing when she has even with us. she says a lot of haitians are torn about whether to leave the devastation behind and many who are able to leave are choosing to stay so they can help. there is an influx of people trying to get out. this is a look at lines of u.s. citizens waiting for flights back home. most of those flights run by the state department are bound for miami. >> emily says the signs she has seen victims holding are usually in english. french is the official language. the fact that they are in english is a sign that the haitians think the u.s. will provide the most aid. as we go to break right now, it protects brabblables, on a high note. let's check in with chris court up in new york. it looks like dow futures are up this morning. what's going on? >> they're up a little bit rye now. a little bit of a rebound. we'll oscillate here a little bit. last week, we gave a lot back, 4%. how about this? a lot of people have been calling for a correction. that is at least 10% off the top that we've experienced at the very beginning of last week. now, we are back down another 4%. so a wild week. that is over 500 points on the dow, almost 550 points on the dow last week. so, it is a situation where we're breaking down but maybe not as much as that correction would indicate. but we still may have a little ways to go. earnings continue to be the focus and it will be apple today after the bell. google as well. they had a rough week last week and now over the weekend, it was announced that their co- founders announced they will sell a bunch of stock so they could be under pressure today. ben bernanke is hopefully for the markets going to be confirmed by the senate by the end of this week. if he is not, that will not send a very good to the markets about monetary policy and it will add to the uncertainty out there as to what direction the u.s. is going to go in and who is really in role of monetary policy. that won't be a good thing for the markets. we'll keep an eyon that. some indication overhe weekend images there. at last look in the district, we weren't getting much rain. some of it has officialed back in now but much of the rainfall now off to the east and including some areas of heavy rain.
