frost on your windshield but later today some people are going to be thinking about snow. >> that's because one county is running its annual snow and ice practice run before we actually get some of the wintry weather. delia goncalves joins us live in forestville, maryland with more on this story. good morning, delia. >> good morning. >> reporter: i'm fortunate enough to be inside. it seems almost cold enough for snow, honestly folks. this is a burst of cold weather that we are having. it's just perfect for this annual dry run here at prince george's dpw and transportation. we're inside the hub. this is really the information center for the department. you can see all the monitors. you can imagine during a snow event, everyone is here organizing the 400 vehicles and dispatching them throughout the 1800 miles of county roads that the trucks clear every snow event and snow emergency, weather event that they have in the area. so this is the annual dry run where they test out their equipment. they check out the roads and take a look at any hazardous conditions, any potholes or any other conditions that could pose extreme challenges during their removal, snow removal situations that they encounter during snow events. and so what we're going to do later this morning, a pretty exciting morning, we're going to be talking to the new acting director in the next half-hour. and then around 6:00 or so, we're actually heading out on the roads with one of the operators who will be driving and reporting back today on the conditions that he's running into on the roads. so a very busy morning. we'll see you back in a half- hour with the acting director here at prince george's county dpw. back to you. >> all right, delia goncalves live from forestville. when the winter weather starts, delia brings out her gorgeous scarves so we're looking forward to that. i know she's not looking forward to being outside in that weather though. thanks, delia. a man accused of shooting a local police officer apparently should have been behind bars. police captured 29-year-old stephon prather yesterday. he's facing attempted murder charges after howard county police officer steven houk was shot and seriously wounded wednesday. turns out prather pled guilty to assault charges in 2006. he was still on probation for that when charged with some felonies in north carolina. word of those serious charges apparently never reached corrections officials in maryland. police have released a newcomb posit sketch of a man who assaulted two women. the attacks happened earlier this week on and near the nova community college campus in loudoun county. in both incidents, the victims say a man tried to hug and kiss them. he's described as in his 20s, about 5'6" tall with an athletic build and short black hair. take a look at this picture on the screen. if you think you've seen this man, if you have any information, you're asked to call loudoun county police. maryland's attorney general doug gansler says he is going to stay in the 2014 race for governor. this despite the release of some controversial photos from a high school party at a rented delaware beach house. the photo shows gansler in a white shirt holding a cell phone. nearby young people on a table and a smattering of plastic red cups. they're all dancing. gansler says he was there to talk to his son who is not seen in the photo. he admitted yesterday he probably should have assumed there was drinking going on and spoken to some of the partygoers and chaperones there. 5 after the hour. hundreds of people will spend part of their weekend helping to make life a little better for someone else. we'll have that story coming up. >> police, police are going to test a high-tech device that could really cut down on the number of times they have to chase a suspect. >> and ahead in sports, big poppy got a home run but was it enough to give boston the commanding lead in the world series? off in their final debate last night. >> the faceoff between republican ken cuccinelli and democrat terry mcauliffe took place on the virginia tech campus. that prompted much of their discussion to center on guns. since there is a memorial to the 32 tech students and professors gunned down at the school in april 2007. >> my opponent likes to say i got an f from the nra. i don't care what grade i got from the nra. >> i believe the most important thing we can do is be much more aggressive in addressing mental health needs across our society because it's nearly impossible to find -- [indiscernible] >> recent polls show mcauliffe increasing his lead over cuccinelli. they also traded barbs on ed indication, the economy and -- on education, the economy and their record. time for another your money report this morning. jessica is off of the we do have the headlines, though. stocks were back in rally mode after strong earnings reports from at&t and ford yesterday. the dow picked up more than 90 points to close at 15,059. the s&p 500 was up 5 and change. the nasdaq picked up 21.89. guess who owes the i.r.s. a fortune in backtaxes? private contractors who work for the i.r.s. the agency's inspector general found that nearly 700 employees of the i.r.s. contractors owe backtaxes to the tune of $5.4 million. under annual i.r.s. policy, more than half of those workers shouldn't be allowed to work for the i.r.s. because they are not enrolled in installment plans to pay those taxes that they owe. contractors for the healthcare.gov website say last minute changes and not enough testing time led to widespread problems since the site launched october 1. congress has started some hearings on those glitches which have made signing up for health care coverage pretty difficult and that's a good assessment of it. lawmakers grilled private contractors who helped create the site and some of them took part of the blame. the others pointed at other contractors. not me, it's him apparently some are saying. and the obama administration rushed the job. secretary sebelius is expected to testify on the hill next week. some of you to the north and west may be waking up to frost this morning. and so what's happening right now in prince george's county may not seem to weird. >> that's because the public works department is on its annual snow and ice exercise today, gear up and you can test your equipment. tell me about what's going to happen today. >> what's going to happen today is we'll have about 400 employees out driving the roadways, testing their equipment, making sure that the plows are operational, making sure the salt spreaders are working properly and also we're checking -- testing our avl system, our automated vehicle load system. the prince george's county department of public works and transportation wants to be prepared for any weather event that will occur. >> it could occur as early as november. so certainly we're not jumping the gun in doing this in october. >> absolutely. you can never be too prepared for any weather event. we want to make sure we are ready for any event in prince george's county. >> thank so you much much. the new acting director here talking about all the events that will take place today. so essentially what happens, you see this plow truck here, one of the 300 pieces of equipment that they have here. we will have many of these plow trucks actually heading out on to the roads today. they will do a dry run, make sure the equipment works and they'll take a look at any conditions on the road that need to be addressed before this snow removal begins this winter season and they will report back here to the hub to make sure that they address and fix those problems before they really become major headaches when the winter weather comes our way. so at the 6:00 hour, we'll actually head inside a vehicle, head out on the roads and talk to a driver about what they expect and what they see on leak. dozens of teachers and student are recovering after they were indeed expod to carbon monoxide. langley elementary school had to be evacuated yesterday after the leak was reported. 66 students and 20 adults had to be treated. a faulty boiler is believed to be the culprit in this. the real estate agent at the center of a halloween legal dispute will hold her annual haunted garden event tonight and tomorrow night. montgomery county tried to block her huge display at her home in silver spring. some neighbors complained the five-day event created too much traffic in the neighborhood. while others say they and their children love going there. in the end the judge ordered the haunted garden be reduced from five nights to two but that's still not the end of it. montgomery county will be back in court early next month trying to win a permanent injunction. 5:37. it's one of the most famous road races in the country. >> police will be especially vigilant guarding runners and speck police say all of their officers are going to be deployed. >> you can be assured that the u.s. park police will be out there. we'll be very vigilant and we will be out there full force. >> runners, you cannot wear those hydration camelback sort of things. the backpacks or masks, they want those out of the picture. they cannot carry glass contain others or flammable liquids. spectators will be ( telephone rings ) hi, honey. how's the camping trip? well, kids had fun, but i think i slept on a rock. what are you doing? having coffee. ah, sounds good! i thought you'd say that. ah. ♪ the best part of wakin' up... ♪ you're the best! wake up to the mountain grown aroma of folgers. ♪ ... is folgers in your cup! a good friday morning. a cold one out there. temps in the 20s in spots. we'll be rising to the middle 50s this afternoon after the chill this morning. so even a cool to chilly afternoon. breezy, maybe not as windy as yesterday, some gusts to 20 miles an hour. then clear tonight. 51 by 7:00. you're going to have to bundle up for the high school football games if you're going out for those and 48 by 9:00 p.m. currently looking at temperatures in the upper 20s in places like manassas, dulles is down to 30. warrenton, stafford checked in with 29. last time i was looking up there. 32 at the tappahannock airport. got a report of frost in maryland. if you don't have the freeze, you at least have frosty conditions as well. if we didn't get a killing freeze this morning, we'll likely have another freeze warning, frost advisory for tonight. outside on the michael & son weather camera, good visibility. the capitol dome under clear skies. the moon is looking good, almost overhead right now. 39 degrees at national. light southwesterly winds. the humidity at 67%. but it's the dew point in the upper 20s. it's a really good measure of how much moisture is in the air and b, how cold temperatures can get when you have clear skies and light winds and dry air. we've dropped into the upper 20s away from town. 44 pittsburgh. you can see the subfreezing temperatures in tennessee this morning. western north carolina and new york, boston, norfolk, they're holding above 40 thanks to the warmth of the atlantic ocean. rain and snow showers, lake effect snow showers will continue through at least midday here and to areas in pennsylvania and ohio, but around our neck of the woods, looks to be partly to mostly sunny once again, just breezy. tonight we'll be clear, cold. like this morning upper 20s to upper 30s for the lows. saturday starts out sunny. we're going to watch the system pass to the north. saturday evening a few clouds. there's a cold front here. this cold front and it's a weak one will come through saturday night and into sunday morning. so sunday may just be a couple of degrees cooler but both days are going to be a little bit more comfortable than what we had yesterday and what we're going to see today with a high forecast only around 55. 38 tonight, light winds. just clear skies. another chilly one with upper 20s in the colder suburbs. 59 tomorrow. nice and cool. maryland, howard, navy, all the homecoming football games, weather should be good for that. the mayor even -- the marine corps marathon, good weather for runner. next week low 60s monday and tuesday. mid-60s by the middle of the week. we could jump to 70 here by wednesday. it all depends on the next storm system. that's why you have to throw a chance of showers in there for halloween. friday mornings are supposed to be a break for early morning commuters. you head to work early. then you say you're going to leave work early. well this morning, look what you have to deal with. just about quarter to 3:00 this morning, we had a single- vehicle crash on the inner loop. look at all that red. basically stopped. bumper-to-bumper traffic from the georgetown pike to the gw parkway. it's a short stretch but enough to cause a delay on the inner loop northbound 495 to the gw parkway. the lanes have been reopened but the ramp to the gw parkway remains blocked so you cannot access the parkway from the northbound side of 495. let's take a live look outside. here's what it looks like if you're planning to head across the american legion bridge. this is all north of the crash scene on the beltway west side of town. let's go back to the maps at least on the northbound side of i-95 in virginia, it's just going to be that normal slow stuff from dale city toward wood bridge. lorton, newington, springfield still looks good. we'll take a live look and you see it looks pretty normal for this time of the morning rush hour on a friday. just loaded up in the main and hov lanes but at least it's moving on to 395. mike, back to you. >> thank you, monika. our next guests are so terrific, andrea saw them once and said you have to come back. first, we'll talk to joanne hammermaster, the president of real food for kids. that is all about getting more healthy foods in schools, right? >> yes. >> what is the biggest goal? it's a coalition of parents your organization. >> correct. >> what are you trying to do? >> we want to get a lot of the processed foods out of the school and get more fresh food in for the kids because a lot of them love fresh food and a lot of them have not tasted fresh food. >> do you reach out to local farmers markets? the last few weeks drivers have checked out. >> it's really not your typical friday morning whatsoever. this crash on the inner loop happened at about quarter to 3:00 this morning. it was just a single vehicle. it took a couple of hours to clear it up. it's all on the showedder now at the gw parkway but
