A metro mess during last nights evening commutes has brought up two issues that we have heard before. We are talking stranded passengers complaining about a lack of direction from metro and riders getting out of the train and walking dangerously close to a live rail. Melanie alnwick is live at the navy yard station in southeast with more on this story. Reporter wisdom, the problems on the green line between the navy yard and anacostia station started around 5 00 in the evening and then all of the residual delays didnt clear until after 8 00 at night. There is certainly a lot of frustrated passengers this morning and there will also be a lot of discussion about what happened and how to handle swayings like this in the future. D. C. Fire trucks and ambulances converged on the anacostia and navy yard stations. It was reported around 5 00. Metro called firefighters to check on what is called an arcing insulator. That we are told is part of the third rail that can generate smoke if there is a wayward electrical current. Now, firefighters mistakenly cut power to two trains instead of just a small section that they were supposed to be working on and that stranded thousands of riders for hours. Some people panicked. There were some medical emergencies and one rider decided to open the doors and get out himself and 50 to 150 passengers followed him on to the track bed. The power just went out and then we were just sitting on the train for about 30 minutes or so. It was getting pretty hot. I know we had an emergency situation where a lady was i dont know if she was diabetic or not but she had shortness of breath and me and another guy pulled her over to the back door and opened the back door so the lady could breathe. Selfevacuation, meaning you take it upon yourself to leave the train is something you should only do if your life is immediately threatened. If you can move to another railcar, that is always a better option. When you heave the train, you are exposing yourself. If you just come near the third rail, it can kill you. Reporter now, where people got out and selfevacuated that apparently was only on one train. On the other train,
Emergency Personnel<\/a> did eventually arrive and help some of of the passengers out through a vent chest. Others were able to get off at some of the platforms and they were very, very crowded but they did eventually have to wait for shuttle busses to get them to where they were going. There will be a meeting this morning with metro and with
Public Safety<\/a> officials to try to talk about what happened here yesterday and how they can do a better job in the future. All right. Thank you. Checking our other top stories now, the firefighter injured in yesterdays
