We have very heavy rain down towards cambridge, parts of Southern Maryland now getting in on the heavy rain. All of that is headed to the north and west. So the first part of this storm will be the rain. It will be picking up in intensity here and be extremely heavy during times for our monday. The wind which have been gusting to about 30 here in washington are going to steadily pick up as well. Lets look at the Bigger Picture and take another look at the storm. There you go. All systems go here unfortunately for landfall across southern new jersey, perhaps the bay of delaware. Well be feeling the effects all day today and all day tomorrow. It will be slow to weaken because it is a hybrid. It is not just deriving its energy from the ocean waters. It is deriving its energy from the contrast between cold and warm air. It will keep itself going even when it moves inland later this evening. Here are some facts for us, some headlines and remember before of a high wind warping which goes into effect at 8 00 this morning through 8 00 tomorrow night. I mentioned the wind gusting to 65 or 70. The gusts up to about 70 later this evening and check on the your rain totals. Five to 10 inches. Havent had a whole lot of time to mention the mount taupe snow but parts of West Virginia, maybe western maryland, up to two feet. Still some question mark about that. There is already a portion of wayne avenue well, i should say between wayne avenue and piney branch. There is a portion of little fall parkway shut down. Southbound 270 hooking through the raindrops, want the to looking through the raindrops, wanted to give you an idea of what it looks like. Watch your speeds if you have to be out and about this morning. Be sure that both headlights are working properly, windshield wipers are working and having a full tank of gas. We have cancellations in effect. Service is suspended along metrorail, all lines. Track, the northeast corridor, not in Service Today because of sandy. And then metrobus, metro access and Montgomery County rideon bus services all suspended today because of the weather. You will find out on the roads, lanes are open. No problems to report for those traveling out on 50 between annapolis and the bay bridge. We do have wind restricts that have been posted. So wind restricts for those out on 50. Because of flooding, there is a portion of 50 already shut down between gulf coast road and philadelphia road but as of now. 90 remains open. We continue to track Hurricane Sandy this morning as wild weather begins to pound the coast. Lauren demarco is live in ocean city this morning with the latest. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. Definitely feeling those bands that tucker was talking about so the rains starting to pick up more. As i was waiting for the live shot, it was a lot lighter. Now getting heavier. The wind picking up. We have seen a little bit of of that sea foam coming across the seawall and i did see a wave crash over it here near 16th street. Police still patrolling the boardwalk. They are will continue to do that until the sustained winds reach 50 Miles Per Hour if they do get that high. We are seeing wind gusts up to 47 Miles Per Hour. Earlier, we headed over to the pier and pier still standing. There were some rumors that it had collapsed. There are definitely waves crashing against it and at time over it. Also, a lot of flooding. Effect shut down south of 17th street. It is closed and also mandatory evacuations under way in that area although we were told that about 200 people did stay so they are hunkered down in their homes. The ocean city mayor did say that the issue here along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean is not the only concern. Ly concer our biggest concern, again, i think is the surge, water surge from the bayside and the intensity of the storm and the duration of the storm. As the storm turns into more of a noreaster type of event and stays offshore for a long period of time, during numerous hi tide cycles, that will cause us high tide cycles, that will cause us some problems. Reporter we did see a lot of flooding out on the roadways, a lot of high standing water. Everything south of 17 is shut down. As is route 50, you cannot head into ocean city on route 50. 90 remains open at this point but the conditions picking up here and expected to be a long haul. High tide is set for 8 19 in the morning. So well watch for that again with the full moon expected to be extra high. And right now, we do still have power so some good news there. That is the latest from ocean city, maryland. Back to you. East coast getting pretty hard hit by this storm already. Before a crew live in ocean city right now. You can see the waves really rolling in there. Lauren demarco is talking to us. Just the amount of force of the wind they are feeling there. Things will continue to deteriorate throughout the hours. Now, were taking a little bit more of a local look here right now. Turn is standing by and he has the latest information on where it stands right now. What is the late . Eft. So we just got an update. Maximum winds have increased to 85 Miles Per Hour. What is the latest . Want to show you the banding features. Weve been getting rain overnight. We are starting to see the yellows and reds. You can see the outer band, outer hurricane band starting to cross the bay. This is what well be having to deal with during the course of the day is these banding features as the storm continues to crest toward our area. Im afraid well get heavy rain shortly. You can see that now crossing the bay. If you are not getting a lot of rain at the moment. It wont be long before all of us get in on the heavy rain. The wind will arrive. So far, weve only had winds gusting to about 30 Miles Per Hour. But later this afternoon, the winds will pick up in intense at this and by late today, the wind will likely gust to 65, perhaps 70 Miles Per Hour across parts of the viewing area. Lets do the latest. Let me show you the storm. Looking very impressive on our satellite picture. This is just amazing. Look at the eye right here. It continues to stay intact here. It is trying to close us eye wall. The storm not losing any of its intensity. All that energy getting thrown off to the north and west. Tropical stormforce winds extend down from maine to the carolinas. Heavy rain earlier across the lower eastern shore. The worst is yet to come down there as well. The wind will steadily pick up during the day. Im afraid you will be dealing with Hurricane Force winds by about the noon hour, maybe lower afternoon across the lower eastern shore. Still likely to make landfall in southern new jersey and perhaps the bay of delaware. The movement now out of the north at 15. It has been tracking off to the north and to the east. But now we are starting to see that change in its direction that the computer models have been playing all along here. Now, it is pushing off to the north and eventually to the north and west and taking that left hook right back towards us. Pressure, 946 millibars. Looks like it makes landfall tonight. This is a new track and i really want to emphasize the concern here. They bring this right across washington later tonight. So that is going to cause some real serious issues around here and get just to the north of us by early tomorrow. Again, just looking at the track for the first time myself. It looks like that will go right over ocean city and right over the Washington Area later tonight and if this verifies, well have some serious issues around here im afraid by tomorrow afternoon. Eventually, the storm will get out of here but it will take a couple of days time. Notice the wind field. Well pull all of this a little further to the south and to the west. If this pulls through ocean city, well be dealing with the hurricaneforce winds here in washington. Im try to update this map for you. Again, very concerned that well have hurricaneforce winds and again, if that track were to track a little further to the south and west, well have major issues here. We had a wind gust closer to 30 in washington. 22 in leonardtown. This is just the preliminary event. This is around 1 00. These winds are going to pick up laterred it and as mentioned, they will be close to Hurricane Force later. By 11 00, notice much of the area in on the heavy rain. Ocean city will be dealing with up to a foot of rain when things wrap up. Later this afternoon of course the rain just incredibly intense as we are expecting rain totals of 4 to 8 inches. Even overnight, the storm will stall and as it does so, well be dealing with rain again tomorrow. Take this storm very seriously. It will be a dangerous one, no doubt about it. Gusts to 70. Rain heavy at time. Becoming very windy. Step out this morning. Not terribly windy. The wind will pick up and be dangerous later this afternoon and tonight. There is your accuweather sevenday forecast. Later tonight, if you lose power, make sure you find your blankets, that kind of thing, if you lose power in your house, it will be chilly overnight. Lets map out the issues. Because of sandy, all service has been suspended on metrorail that amtrak, the northeast corridor which includes d. C. Again, out and about on the roads, you will find the Wind Restrictions are in effect for those traveling out at the bay bridge which means half trailers, empty box trailers are prohibited out on the bay bridge. Still a portion of 50 that is already closed off because of standing water between golf course road and philadelphia road. Route 90 remains open at this time. Southbound 270 look through the raindrops, here we go, southbound 270 coming in out of the german up two. We encourage to you make sure you have a full tank of gas. The headlights too. Slow it down. The interstate doesnt look too bad but we do have georgetown pike, route 7, canal road, even, where we have a lot of leaves fallen on the roads. That make identify very slippery commute. Here we are at the beltway checking for what was an accident. 66, no incidents reported at this time coming in from manassas towards centreville. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontimetraffic. Imetraffic. Most flights at Reagan National and Dulles International have been canceled for today. Passengers are being urged to check their flight status before hand. I think a lot of people are now at home waiting for Hurricane Sandy to come and leave her mark. They took the precautions this weekend. Were done here at the city dock. Most people are familiar with that. We are watching the water level. The water is already high. Of course, they are expecting it to come up even high are and perhaps overflow its banks here. A lot of the businesses in and around here have taken weather precautions. When you go around, you can see that many of them have sandbags piled up in front of their doorways. We havent seen anyone coming out to work yet this morning. As for the actual weather itself, im sure you can see in the light, it is raining. It is a steady rain but not anything you cant handle. There is a slight breeze. It is cool, of course. It is a very chilly morning to be out here. If you take a look. You can see there are boats in the water. People that own boats here in annapolis have been asked to secure their boats. People that live in lowlying areas have been asked to move inland, stay with family and friend or there is a shelter that the red cross has set up at the appear appear list shelter. I think there are 12 people who have checked in there. They can hold up to 250 and they are pet friendly as well. Theyve asked people to move their cars to Higher Ground and they have opened four city parking garages here so that people can go ahead and do that. Annapolis government offices are closed today except for central employees but that is the latest here. Eyes on the sky. Eyes on the water. We are watching Hurricane Sandy this morning as it gets closer and closer to the coast. This is a live look at ocean city, maryland right now where you can see the rain in the forefront there in the camera and then the waves in the background there as they are kicking up and heading in there. We continue to watch the hurricane as the storm make its way to our area this morning. Now, caution is the before the approach right now. It looks like everyone is taking the warnings about the storm pretty seriously. Metro is closed today. That includes all rail, bus and metro access services. The federal government is also closed. D. C. Government offices or closed and so are most School Across the region. Identify full list of closures, can you go to myfoxdc. Com. Were all running all the closures on the top of your screen. We just got an update a little while ago about the track that the hurricane is coming through and now were thinking through washingtonings d. C. . It has jogged slightly to the south. Im not sure it will come exactly through washington. Either way, it will be close enough to cause a lot of damage. You dont want to focus on just the center of the storm. Honestly, the winds extend from the center. We are all guaranteed unfortunately to get in on some of the worst of the storm as it passes through. We are just Getting Started here. I know across parts of the area, we are adjust getting rain showers at the moment. Steadily, it will get worse here hour by hour and eventually, well be dealing with as mentioned some hurricaneforce winds around here as well. There is your radar. Rain showers here in washington. Getting steadier by the moment and you can see just off to the south and east, weve got pretty good rains crossing the bay. Calvert county, anne arundel county, out towards annapolis, you soon will be getting pretty good rains. All of this is pushing off to the north and west. This is one of the outer bands associated with sandy that is approaching. What well be dealing with during the day and down at ocean city as well are these banding features. You will get periods of extremely heavy rain and eventually later this afternoon, extremely gusty winds. You will get a bit of a lull and it will start up all over again as these bands of storminess come on through. Let me show you the Bigger Picture. The big change probably since you went to bed last night. The storm has intensified. That is not good news for any of us. Maximum winds at 58 Miles Per Hour with gusts approaching 100 maximum winds at 58 mimes per hour with gusts approaching 100. For those of you that follow storms, this would be on par with the pressure of hurricane hugo. Maximum winds at 85 Miles Per Hour with gusts approaching 100. What matters is that well be hit hard as landfall is expected in southern new jersey, perhaps delaware, maybe delaware bay now as we get into the nighttime hours. So it will be awfully close to us unfortunately and it is now making that turn. High wind warning. Entire area, 8 00 a. M. This morning through 8 00 p. M. Tomorrow night. The worst it was will be later this afternoon and tonight. Winds could gust 70 Miles Per Hour through part of the viewing area, particularly up just north and east up towards baltimore. That will get the worst of it with these winds. I didnt mention the blizzard warning. There is your blizzard warning for western maryland and West Virginia with 6 to 12 inches of snow. Parts of the higher peaks will get two feet before the storm wraps up. 54 today. Rain heavy at time. Your winds gusting to 07 Miles Per Hour 70 Miles Per Hour to the north and west. Things continuing to escalate here. Waves certainly picking up in height and definitely more forceful at this time here so Hurricane Sandy definitely making herself felt along the boardwalken we are at 17th street just a little bit further south. We are seeing some of the waves breach the wall. Now, earlier, we had been driving around and taking a look at some of the flooded roads. We have a lot of high standing water on the roads right now. If you are trying to drive in on route 50, route 50 is shut down at the entrance to ocean city. 90 does remain open. Everything south of 17th street also closed and there were mandatory evacuations there although were told about 200 people did choose to stay. The latest that tucker was saying with that track heading closer to us, hopefully, those folks are hunkered down and being safe. Definitely seeing heavy waves at the pier. A Police Officer pulled up to see what we were doing. We were shooting the video. He actually his patrol car got stuck. We had to help him get out. He was able to show us some video that he shot of some of the waves crashing over the wall. He said it was the first time in 23 years that he saw the water. Oh, my goodness. En we should come back out here. Im seeing a lot of water come over the wall right now. Again, last year, hurricane irene, we did see a lot of that sea foam and some of the waves breaching. Definitely seeing some good action here with the water itself coming over the wall at this point. Again, 17th, 16th street along the boardwalk. Making aussie little bit nervous here. Well continue to watch that. The seawall erected over hurricane gloria in 1985 and has not been breached since then. There is also concern about the other side, the bayside of ocean city. Governor Bob Mcdonnell has authorized members of the Virginia National guard to help. Foxs Jennifer Davis is live in Virginia Beach with more on the situation there. Good morning to you. Hi there. The rain has been coming down since midday yesterday and it has not stopped and has not lessened. The other story is the winden they are about 40mile an hour sustained with gusts in the 50s or 60s. The other story is the winds. You can see how saturated the ground is. This Virginia Beach norfolk area is a really low lying area. So already yesterday, we were seeing lots of flooded streets and we were hearing from people who said the first floors of their homes were already flooded. Typical storm may move through in four to six hours. We are heading into the second day of this and they are telling us the rain will continue throughout date and into tomorrow. The other concern is the storm surge. Water levels are expected to be between 6 and 11 feet over what is typical. I can tell you here the water has already eaten you want beach and is lapping up on the boardwalk. So a very serious situation here. Most places at least where we are still have power but there is concern that they can maintain that as the storm continues. Back to you guys. All right. We continue to track Hurricane Sandy at 5 45 in the morning. This is a live look outside right now in fairfax county, virginia where the rain continues to fall. It is going to get worse, folks. Trust us. Tucker says it is continuing this way. Right now, it is just rain and wind, subtle wind at this point in some areas but it will get worse, very bad so brace yourselves for some possible dangerous bad situations out there when it comes to this weather. And tucker, of a got an update earlier on. It appears to be tracking a little closer to us but either way, well all get something out there. It looks like on the latest advisory, the Hurricane Center give it a slight jog to the south. That would mean the center would be even a little closer to us, perhaps crossing the delaware, delaware bay. Tropical stormforce winds from the carolinas to maine and the Hurricane Force wind extend out about 100 miles. The storm unfortunately gaining intensity overnight and maximum wind now 85. We are close to 100. That is not good news. The pressure continues for fall. It is kind of a worst Case Scenario for us here. Well be very close to that center as it moves inland later tonight. So the deal with today is rain showers right now. Rain becoming heavier during the day and then the winds really kick in later this afternoon and tonight. And take it seriously because the wind will be gusting 50, 06, 70 Miles Per Hour across parts of the area 60, 70 miles posterior hour across parts of the area. I throw this essential 70 Miles Per Hour across parts of the area. I know the essential service need to be out there. Juror if you have not cleaned up outside your house, there is still time to do that. You can see the rain showers. The yellows and oranges, that is areas of more intense rain. That is now approaching the city. The pushing into prince georges county, anne arundel county, calvert county, we are seeing one. Outer bands of Hurricane Sandy. So we are now actually deal with the hurricane itself. The rain rates here will be pretty impressive as they start to move on through. The first problem is a potential for flash flooding. We are under a floodwatch across the area for the next couple of days and then the wind will really pick up. Out to the west, not so much for you yet but you too will get in on it shortly. Lets take a look at Hurricane Sandy. Maximum winds now, 85. Pressure has been falling overnight. The other piece to note here, it had been moving off to the north and to the east. That track now is northerly at 15. So it is starting to push back, starting to do that last left hook that all the of the computer models have been suggesting. You can see all that energy getting thrown back towards the midatlantic up into new york. Well be talking about the possibility of historic storm surges here across parts of the mid atlantic, really stretching up to new york as this storm is just going to push a wall of water unfortunately right up into places like ocean city right at the delaware bay, new jersey and weve been talking about what will happen in new york later today with high tide. They could be dealing with Flooding Issues as well. Storm continues to track off here. It will be changing direction here. Land fall tonight, maybe 8 00, 9 00 as the storm continues to be just unfortunately very up pressive. Let me show that you wind field. Field. The wind will pick up in intensity during the course of date. By 5 00, you will be dealing with sustained winds at 50 Miles Per Hour and these winds gusting at time over 60 and notice that along the beaches at 5 00 p. M. , we are dealing with hurricaneforce winds. Again, very dangerous conditions down there as the storm tracks inland and then notice here at 10 00 tonight, this will be the worst time for us windwise. Between about 5 00 this afternoon and overnight tonight into the earlymorning hours, well be dealing with very dangerous winds and those wind, if you are along the bay, unfortunately, without a whole lot to stop the friction there, the wind will be extremely strong there along the bay. This is a big change and again, this is what im concerned about. The computer modeling suggesting that well be dealing with the possibility of hurricaneforce winds even here in washington as we get into the overnight hours. You can see how close that red is. That would indicate wind of 70 plus Miles Per Hour. I dont need to tell you that will cause a lot of damage around here. Things will get better around here tomorrow. This is 8 00 tuesday night. So take the storm very seriously. It will be to say least on the strong side here later this afternoon. Here is a projected profile of wind gusts and you can see theyre picking up here during the course of the day. By 5 00 p. M. , we could see winds gusting in the mid50s around here. Later tonight, look at that. By 11 00, winds gusting to the mid60s here in the Washington Area and things get a little bit better during the day tomorrow. Things will gradually improve as the storm starts to lose its energy as it moves inland overnight. There is your forecast for today. Going to be cold. Winds north and west 35 to 55 gusting to 70 Miles Per Hour. We could see winds gusting to 75 around here. Rain heavy at times becoming very windy. I want to mention the cold temperatures again. If you lose power, make sure you have blankets. It will be on the chilly side. Over199lows into the upper 30s to about 40 so get the blankets here because you could go a couple days without power. In preparation for what is expected to be standing water and probably trees down, already beach drive closed off between knowles avenue and 410 here in kitsap peninsulaing top. Metrobus, metro access and even Montgomery County rideon buses, no Service Today because of the storm. Wind restricts in effect for those traveling out on 50. Give us an update quickly on what is going on as far as the Red Cross National Capital Region is concerned right now. The first message we have for everyone is we want you all to be safe, shelter in place and make sure you are taking care of yourself, your friends and your family. What were doing right now is working with our local government partners, local agencies and to make sure that we are ready to open up shelters if we are asked and were mope mobilizing our volunteers and equipment to make sure that they are on the scene as soon as we know what were what is happening in this region. Now, i understand already you have some shelters up and ready to go, perhaps some people already saying in them. How can people go about finding the closest shelter to them . The shelters are run by local governments and agencies and what we suggest that people do is listen to media and find out through various lists that the Government Agencies are putting out, what shelters are available of the Red Cross Work with them to staff the shelters but they are opened by those agencies. Sheryl, give us an idea too right now how folks out there can help you because we know there is going to be a lot of people affected by this, some 60 million in the mid thick sandinista lone. What can other people do to help you out so can you help others in need. The number one thing is to make sure they are taking care of themselves and sheltering in place. We have a list on our web site red cross. Org that gives them the kinds of things they should have on hand and should be prepared to be sheltering in place for at least three days. Number one on that list is water, nonperishable foods a flashlight radio and batteries. I cant stress that enough. Some people are collecting candles. That is something we dont want them to do because this is such a chance of fire inform have a smart phone, we suggest you download our free hurricane app which has all kind of really good information on what to do to prepare and respond to and what to do afterwards in a hurricane situation. One of the things that that hurricane has is called safe an you can reach that on our web site. The safe and well part of the application allows you to let your family know that you and your loved ones are okay. So it is important. All right.
