you will find lanes are open, no problems to report as you work your way around the beltway on this hump day. southbound 95 and 295 looking good. no problems to report as you work your way in from laurel. 66 again, overnight construction cleared now. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. big story this morning, the prep rigs to unveil the space shuttle discovery ate virginia museum. discovery will take the place of the enterprise which will be september to new york next week. >> foam's welcoming celebration comes on the heels of yesterday's breathtaking flight in the skies. karen gray houston has the highlights. >> reporter: a-struck space buffs all over the nation's capital said a collective wow. >> we've been to a couple of launches. i made my living fly with the navy for 20 years. so, hey, it's a fit. >> i think it is a wonderful moment making history right here bringing the shuttle and manned space flight to a place that we can all visit. >> reporter: discovery making three passes showing off for the crowds that gathered at dulles airport, at gravelly point, the national mall to name a few vantage points. everybody wanted to see this breathtaking historic flight. it was around 9:40 flying very low overhead. >> i went down to orlando twice to see when it went off and both times it got canceled. i never got to see it go up. >> reporter: it was the last flight from her former home at the kennedy space center in florida. discovery has completed 39 missions, spent 356 days in space, orbited the earth 5,830 times and traveled over 148 million miles. >> it was awesome. the shuttle went directly overhead. it is history. wanted to see it. >> it was really cool. i haven't actually ever seen any shuttles or rockets take off or anything like that but it was really cool. >> reporter: karen gray houston, fox 5 news. the shuttle celebration continues tomorrow and you are invited. we even have special music apparently. the smithsonian is having a welcome discovery ceremony at the udvar hazy center in chantilly. the parking lots open at 8:00 a.m. the official festivities begin at 11:00 with an outdoor ceremony. at 4 clark, discovery will be moved into the hangar for permanent display. lots of astronauts including john glenn will also be on hand. hand. we are finding out the results of the d.c. primary. as of friday, councilmember vincent orange was beating his challenger by over 1700 votes. the board of elections will certify the april 3rd results at its monthly meeting later on this morning. in virginia, the senate kills and $85 billion spending bill. it is the third time this year the state's budget has died in the senate. democrats voted against the bill because of a dispute over funding for a high priority capital beltway transit project. state government operations could shut down in 10 week or less if a budget is not passed. nearly 100 metrobuses are out of service after two fires in less than a week. melanie alnwick is live at the bus depot in friendship heights with the details. >> reporter: good morning. the buses in question are called the orion 6. metro started operating the orion 6 diesel buss in 2000 and last night, the entire orion 6 fleet was taken out of service while metro continues to investigate the fire. tuesday morning, one of the buses did catch foyer on route other in maryland. there were no passengers on board the bus at the time. it was being driven by a mechanic. but it was the second incident in just two weeks. last thursday, another orion 6 bus caught fire on i-66 in fairfax. no passengers at the time and no injuries there. all 94 of the buses out of service. they are 12 years old. the agency does not believe age is a factor in the fires but that the board also realizes it may be time to replace them. >> we bring on about 100 new buses every year and we have a fleet of just under 1500 buses. that is sort of the cycle we find ourselves in. if we have to take additional steps as a result of having these 94 on the side, we'll work with the board of directors to figure out a solution for that. rotor buses did cost $280,000 apiece. metro says it does have a number of buses that it holds in reserve to respond when mechanical problems arise so it will press all of those strategic reserve buses into service while the orion 6 buses are out of service. they say there should be no problems on bus service this morning. they don't expect t we do want to hear from if you are going out and expecting to get on your metrobus f you are having problems. please let us know. can you tweet us or hit us up on our fox amorning news facebook page. >> thank you. tensions rise between the u.s. and israel. that is next as we check more headlines. >> this one really raising some eyebrows. she won a million dollar lottery. there she is holding the big check but she kept collecting thousands of dollars in food stamp benefits. we'll get an update on this story as we continue. guilty to fraud charges. there she is holding that check. manned aclayton is her name. she is also good of collecting thousands of dollars in food stamp benefits after she hit the jackpot. clayton apparently told the reporter she thought it was just fine to keep getting welfare checks because she didn't have a job. state officials have now cut her benefits and she faces up for four years in the slammer if she is convicted. tough lesson there. >> the courts will sort that one out. more verbal jabs in the race for the white house. coming up next, mitt romney continues to slam president obama. of clouds in the forecast. it will feel a lot different than the last couple of days with highs only in the low 60s. it will be a cool one with light showers back into the forecast throughout the day and i think they'll linger into the early evening hours before we get it out of here. 55 at gaithersburg. 57 in manassas. 57 at dulles. and 62 in annapolis. you are generally looking at the high temperatures. only about 62 for our daytime high in washington. mostly cloudy skies. showers likely today. when all is said and done, maybe 1/10 of an inch in washington. then mostly cloudy, some showers possible early tonight. 509 overnight low. we'll clear out late tonight. there could be a leftover shower early tomorrow morning. then partial under with highs about 70. friday looks absolutely brilliant, beautiful, 74 and sunny. weekend doesn't look great. sunday looked like some showers return. really need the rain again. maybe a good soaking rain by sunday and monday with highs in the 60s. that is weather. let's do traffic. and julie wright. we've got lots of energy this morning. >> it is the juice, i tell you. you got to drink your apple juice. on the roads, you will find land are open, no problems reported if you are traveling northbound on 395 leaving duke street headed out to the 14th street bridge. an easy drive as you work your way north of landmark. -- on the roads, you will find lanes are open. all lanes open as you travel north of route 3. slight traffic volume southbound on 270. lanes are open. no signs of any roadwork on the beltway traveling between annandale and merrifield. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. -timetraffic. in the race for president, the top two congressional republicans have finally endorsed mitt romney. >> the gop frontrunner hit the campaign trail and slammed president obama on his economic policy. fox's carl cameron has the story now. >> reporter: mitt romney marked tax day with a policy-laden picnic table discussion in a pennsylvania park. >> our current president is intent on raising tax rates particularly for small business. the vice president the other day propose another tax which he said is a global tax on business. not quite sure what that is but that will surely cost jobs as well. rock romney would eliminate taxes on capital gains for families earning under $200,000 a year. >> not a tax that had much of an impact. someone calculated that that tax would raise enough revenue to pay for government for 11 hours. so it was more of a gimmick. >> reporter: 69% of republicans and 08% of gop conservatives view romney favorably. the top two republicans in the country join today. >> i will be proud to support mitt romney and do everything i can to help him win. >> i support governor romney for president of the united states. he will be the nominee. >> reporter: democrats have tried for months to make the release of romney's personal tax returns part of the fight. romney has already made his 2010 returns public and plans to release more when his 2011 return is submitted. democrats ask cryptically, what else is romney hiding. romney's likability has taken a hit. 35% view him favorly but 47% don't. president obama, 56% favorable, 40% unfavorable. romney and the rnc plan to jointly raise $800 million. carl cameron, fox news. a gripping ko at the box office this weekend. -- a reviewer kevin mccarthy. we'll have the interview coming up. stay with us. welcome back. if you've had a good cry at the movies in recent years, chances are nicholas sparks has something to do with t more than half a dozen of his books from a walk to the remember to the notebook, i cried that the that one, have been made into movies that are nearly guaranteed to make awed yeps teary-eyed. >> his novel, lucky one, the latest to get the big screen treatment. nicholas sparks spoke with kevin mccarthy about the process of transforming a novel into a movie. >> i always wanted to ask an author this question because you write books all the time. if you hypothetically could throw yourself into the world of one of your favorite books of all time and live in that world, what book would it be and why? >> all of them are really set in the region where i live, so to speak. maybe something hike the notebook because, in the end, you know, you know they've been happy their entire lives. but really, they are all set in eastern north carolina which is where i live. i have abeen married for 23 years and it felt like it was fate when we met. so i kind of do live in that region and i have that kind of warm relationship with my wife. >> what is something that you think has been cut out of your books into a movie that you think that would not have worked in a movie ever. what are elements of your book that would not work? >> what doesn't work is intyreo spex. you can't film someone thinking. if you have someone who is really struggling. we'll take this film for an example. i'm able to really cover flu introspection what logan is going through, the reason behind the ptsz that he is going through. so here you are like -- you read that introspection and say how do we show. this it is the walks they film with his dog and the camping out and the arriving and so you try to show it and you try to get the sense of what you are feeling. so introspection doesn't work. you can't film it. other things work great in film, even better than in books. anything with a lot of excitement ache car chase, a great scene where they're very passionate with each other works great on screen. these kind of things work better on film than in a novel. >> ryan gosling and rachel mcadams made fun of me. i told them i cried in the notebook. can i get your approval that it is okay to cry in your film. >> of course. it is because that is the purpose of what this film is supposed to do. this is what the novel is supposed to do. it is supposed to move you through all of the emotions of life. you don't want to cry the entire way through. i would say before a problem here. >> at the end. >> you should feel the joy or passion. you should be interested. you should really feel all of the emotions. that is what i'm trying to do. that is why, when we put together the films and we cast them and you hire directors because you want them to be able to actually put the emotions of life on screen as well and sadness is part of that. >> all right. tomorrow morning, we'll have kevin's interview with the stars of lucky one. so you will want to watch that. >> that movie poster kind of reminded me of the notebook. >> you're right. a six-year-old girl handcuffed and taken to a police station all over a wild tantrum. that is ahead in about 14 minutes. >> next, we are following overnight violence in the too. francine haskins posted i watched on tv and the nasa web site and i'm still crying my eyes out. we were part of history. and palmer allen wrote, thanks, guys, for the pure emotion of the event as we all say good- bye and thank you to nasa for the space shuttle program. just simply awesome. remind me when i was a kid watching the apollo flight. >> i saw all of the picture just all over facebook, friend of mine that worked downtown that were able to go outside and take pictures. >> i'm still seeing them now just looking at facebook. >> all the people on buildings yesterday. >> all right. >> amazing. >> good day to be outside today too if of a got your eyes to the skies, right? well, wait. >> if you like rain showers. >> in hawaii, it was 80 every day. >> it has only been an hour. it will a wonderful day. it will be a dosent day. we need the rain. that is the bottom line so every drop we can get, we'll take. when we get into the upper months, that is typically our driest time of year. we need the rain in the spring. 61 now in washington. 52 in baltimore. we've got the possibility of some rain showers. some of our viewers out to the west are probably getting some light rain at the moment. this is your sentinel radar. got an area of low pressure down into georgia. that will be pushing to the east but enough of that moisture will get far enough north that we'll at least see some light rain around here. best chance for some measurable rain will be south and west of the city. the farther north you get as you get up into southern pennsylvania, you guys will probably -- we have viewer in southern pennsylvania. >> yes, we do. >> maybe 1/10 of an inch of rain. the other thing to mention, the temperatures will be a lot cooler. upper 70s yesterday. remember, we were near 90 on monday. today, low 60s. it will feel pretty cool out there with the cloud cover and light rain. >> it has been a roller coaster of temperatures. >> typical this time of year. >> those are fine though. i don't mind that. you know it will be so hot when we hit the summer because we are already -- the way this year has been going?
