park, lindsey murphy, fox 5 sports. good morning to you. it is 5:00 on this thursday morning. it is april 1st already and we are ofto a really nice start. thank you for staying with us i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> i'm steve chenevey. glad you're with us this morning. let's check in with tony perkins. lindy said it was windy. she neglected to mention it was also sunny and beautiful yesterday. >> just gorgeous. >> if that was nice, i think you will find today even nicer. we won't have the winds that we had yesterday. it will still be a little bit breezy but not like it was yesterday. current temperature, 50 degrees at reagan natial airport. 50 in baltimore. 4 # degrees at dulles. our temperatures really kind of all over the place. --2 degrees at dulles. temperatures range from the upper 30s to 50 degrees this morning. here is a look at the satellite- radar composite for the mid- atlantic and for the eastern united states. we do have clouds pushing in over us and not much in the way of cloud cover but a couple of clouds out there early in the morning. that will be about it. we are going to certainly see mostly sunny skies for the day. so the forecast for today looks like this. sunny and a warm afternoon. high in the mid- to upper 70s. not bad at all. >> we are getting an early preview of summer, aren't we? yield say yeah. we were talking about this in the weather center yesterday. today will be warm. i think tomorrow and saturday, we would classify as hot. >> okay. >> a little bit of everything. let's check in with julie wright. >> good morning. no problems to report right now traveling around the capital play. we are in great shape. if you are traveling on the outer loop coming from springfield in the direction of the wilson bridge, v-d.o.t. is in the process of clearing out overnight construction. no other incidents to report on 95. it is nice and clear right now leaving springfield. overnight construction at the hot lane ramps has cleared. all lane open leaving hyattstown trying to get through gaithersburg and continued out towards the lane divide. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. for all those people would came forward and helped us close this case, god bless you, we appreciate you. we have one more rson we're looking for. >> reporter: d.c. police chief kathy lanier trying to calm the concerns after community dealing with tragedy. nine people shot at a drive-by on south capital street. four of them died. this more than, police have charged three suspects. they are still searching for a fourth. the community is outraged over this violence. sarah simmons joins us live from southeast with more on our big story. good morning. >> good morning. community is outraged, also saddened. you can see behind me here at the scene, south capital and brandywine street, a growing memorial hit. that continues to pop up here. in the meantime, the three suspects you were mentioning were in court yesterday. two of the suspects were charged with three counts of first degree murder. 26-year-old nathaniel sims and 20-year-old orlando carter. also there was a 14-year-old juvenile who was explained as the driver of the getaway car who was also charged. orlando carter was also charged with a fourth murder yesterday, a murder that seemed to have sparked all of this, stemming from a stolen bracelet, prosecutors have said. police tried to take carter off the street last week if a murder of jordan howe but he said they did not have enough evidence in order to issue a warrant. now, devon boyd, an 18-year-old boy shot in the middle of all of this, his family said he was caught in the crossfire. >> it is ridiculous. i mean what else can you think of something like that? it is absolutely ridiculous. soon, children that are younger, what are they going to have? what is going to be here? >> now, in court, prosecutors say that orlando carter was the one that opened fire here at south capital and brandywine. but again, court documents are saying that they are still on the lookout for one suspect. we're live here in southeast, sarah simmons, fox 5 news. back to you. >> thank you. emotions ran high at a vigil for the victims. >> as a community, every child out here is your child. >> members of the community gathered in southeast last night to remember those would lost their lives and condemned the violence in their neighborhood. many of them outraged over the violence that claimed the young lives. >> i just feel like if you want to shoot people, then drop them off in afghanistan, drop them off in iraq, drop them off in all these countries that have war and let them see what real war is about. you don't shoot innocent bystanders. >> that woman's 16-year-old daughter was gunned down. she had already removed the teen from public school because of violence. coming up a little later, d.c. councilman marion barry got quite an earful from the father of the first victim. we'll hear what that man had to say to barry as our camera was rolling and why he says he holds barry personally responsible for the killings. that is coming up in about 30 minutes. a man in jail accused of carjacking an raping a woman at the largo town center metro station. police say he robbed and raped a woman several weeks ago after she walked to her car in the parking garage. police say the suspect then took off with the woman's vehicle. six days later, metro transit police spotted the stolen car back at the station. they arrested 19-year-old jonathan duffy. policeay he was with a 13- year-old girl who had been missing for two days. an update now on the prince george's county paramedics who pronouned a man dead on friday only to learn 90 minutes later that the coroner realized that person was really alive. the patient, george waters, was taken to the hospital but then later passed away over the weekend. the case is still under investigation. but this morning, the paramedics are back on the job. they have been cleared for duty. ems personnel have been ordered to review protocols. prince george's county sheriff michael jackson is vying for the county's top job now. he officially kicked off his cam main for county executive in temple hills. back in 2008, his deputies raided the home of berwyn heights mayor shea calvo shooting and killing his two dogs. the primary will be held on september 14th. today, maryland lawmakers will debate pay cuts and furloughs for state workers. there is a plan on the table which calls for the state to skip cost of living increases as well as merit pay an bonuses and add another 10 furlough days similar to the current fiscal year. members are not expected to endorse a controversial senate plan to gradually shift some teacher pension costs to counties in coming years. d.c. releases its 2011 budget today. some other stories making headlines this morning. a near disafter ther in the sky. up next, we'll talk about how one packed commercial jet nearly collided with another plane. plus, new refuse layings about the clergy abuse scandal. was the vatican aware of problems decades ago? i thought it would be more fun this way. all right. here we are on the roads right now. lanes are open. northbound i-95,o problems reported leaving newington continuing up towards the capital beltway. you will find if you are traveling northbound coming across the occoquan, lanes are open still at speed out of dale city. 395 also in great shape leaving the play continuing out towards the 14th street bridge. if you were traveling the top side of the beltway, lane are open here as well continuing around from college park over towards 270. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> as we first told you yesterday, president obama wants to reverse a ban on offshore drilling. areas off the coast of maryland and virginia could be included. speaking at andrews air force base, the president said the decision is part of a new energy strategy signed to reduce our imports of foreign oil. fox 5's tom fitzgerald has more on the drilling decision. >> reporter: at andrews air force base in prince george's county, maryland, president obama staking out a new claim on energy independence. >> so today, we are announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gags exploration. >> reporter: the president's plan includes opening up east coast offshore areas that have be off limits to drilling including virginia and maryland. >> drilling alone can't come close to meeting our long-term energy needs. and if the sake of our planet and our energy independence, we need to begin the transition to cleaner fuels now. >> reporter: it is a change of policy that moves the president closer to the position of drilling advocates. >> part of that vision is coming true today. >> reporter: virginia governor bob mcdonnell, whose state boasts 112 miles of coastline and campaigned for drilling, welcomed the news. >> virginia will be the first state to be able to enjoy the privilege of exploring and drilling off the atlantic coast for oil and natural gas. >> reporter: but environmentalists are angry. evan manuel of the sierra club said he would like to see the president focus exclusively on other energy instead of offshore drilling. >> we are very disappointed. we it can can koo cause pollution on our beaches and harm coastal economies and ecosystems. >> reporter: others supporthe president's move and say modern offshore platforms would not be visible from maryland and virginia beaches. >> state waters extend approximately three miles offshore so the federal areas that wave been discussing are beyond that. >> reporter: but politically for the president, having just ended a bruising battle over h an off ill branch to republicans on drilling could grease the wheels for future cooperation. just after the president's announcement came more bad news on the oil barrel price front. oil prices posted a 17-month high of $84 a barrel just after the president announced he was opening up the new offshore sites. tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. in this morning's on call, another reason to treat yourself to a relaxing massage. a nice rubdown may do more than just relieve tension and stress. it could help relieve another common problem. are you you everring any neck pain. if so, it could point to a major health problem. details on all this coming up. ♪ [ female announcer ] ahh, the book of truth. food myth number 22. nothing's better after a long day than a giant plate of lettuce. c'mon. who's satisfied with that? >> a surprising a people that nausea, or stomachache or vomiting or maybe just feeling a little bit nauseous could be a sign of a heart attack or a stroke. >> reporter: stumbling on your words or feel like your speech is slurred. >> some people when they are having a stroke might suddenly notice it is difficult to speak or they don't seem to have control over their facial muscles, not able to get out certain words. >> reporter: having trouble see something. >> another sign of stroke is blurred vision. again, someone you know might notice that one of your pupils looks smaller than the other or perhaps an eyelid could look a little bit droopy. >> reporter: feeling dizzy or uncooinated? >> if paired with other symptoms or if it just feels a little out of the ordinary, if you feel dizzy, suddenly you fi yourself tripping. maybe you stem bell or you actually fall down, that could be a sign of a heart attack or a stroke. >> reporte many people believe a heart attack is a clutching pain in the chest. but raglan says that often when neck or shoulder pain occur, it could be a sign of ate heart tax. >> actually more often it is a mild achradiating down their arm. especially with women, they might experience a pain that comes and goes. or maybe i feel like my bra feels a little tight or maybe i pulled something wrong. >> reporter: raglan reminds if at any time something doesn't feel ride or if you are feeling one of those symptoms, go see your doctor. still much more ahead including more our top story this morning. >> reporter: families are outrage and they are looking for justice after tuesday's massive drive-by shooting. coming up being more on the suspect's day in court when fox 5 morning news returns. take a look at the capitol right now an the temperatures cooperating. just a hair shy of 50 degrees right now in d.c. >> we'll see our temperatures jump considerably. some folk are seeing temperatures right now in the upper 30s, south and west of washington. we are near 50 degrees now. but even when you consider that, our temperatures are still going to jump quite a bit. you will add on 25 degrees to that easily. that sounds good. it will be awm one today. let's take a look at the satellite-radar, show you what is happening right there. reagan national is reporting mostly cloudy skies. there are some clouds moving across. it won't be a big deal today. those clouds will burn off. we'll see mostly sunny conditions we feel. our current temperatures, as i was telling you, they are a little bit all over the place. right now, 49 here. 39 in frederick, maryland. 4 # at dulles. 41 in ocean city. the forecast for today, some morning clouds but becoming mostly sunny and warm. our average high for this day is 61 degrees. -- 42 at dulles. we are looking for a high of 78 degre. that is a lot. that will lead into a warm couple of days. we'll tell you about that coming up in just a little bit. >> it is a good trend though. >> yes, it is. >> just a few degrees shy of that magic number, right? >> good morning. something i could get used to. lanes are open if you are traveling the top stretch of the the beltway between college park and bethesda. no incidents to report. still in the clear as you work your way northbound leaving newington continuing north of 7100 conning up towards the capital beltway. 66 coming in from the west. north of 7100 continuing up towards the capital beltway. no incidents to report traveling westbound 495 leaving nam natural avenue continuing around through silver spring. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> there is no more egregious kind of retaliation than to shoot nine people and kill four people, innocent as they stand on the street corner because you're ticked off about something. that is just inexcusable in this community. >> our top story this morning is one of the deadliest shootings in the district. a community is now fighting back saying it is not the place for that kind of violence. nine people shot in that drive- by. four of them killed including innocent bystanders and three suspects are now behind bars. the search continues for one more suspect as the community continues to demand answers. fox 5's sarah simmons joins us once again live in southeast with the latest. >> the families are upset and grieving and a memorial continues to grow here at south capital street in brandywine. this is the scene of one of the district's deadliest shootings in recent years. now, the three suspects have been charged. the three right now, 6-year-old nathaniel sims and 20-year-old orlando carter, they are all in court yesterday as well as the 14-year-old juvenile who has also been charged who is described as the driver of the getaway car. carter, by the way, was also charged with a fourth murder yesterday actually murder that police say sparked it all, sparking it over a stolen bracelet. police tried to take carter off the street last week if a murder of jordan howe but they did not have enough evidence at the time in order to issue a warrant. 4 hours after the shooting, the mayor spoke out. >> we know that any homicide is tragic and we just want to say that the police department will continue to do everything that they need to do to both arrest people, prevent homicides from happening. >> reporter: now n court yesterday, prosecutors say orlando carter was the one would got out of the car and opened fire here on south capital in brandywine. in the meantime, as you mentioned, steve, they are still on the lookout for an additional suspect. back to you. >> thank you. even city leaders now being blamed in the shooting. a man whose son's death may have triggered drive-by took personal aim at d.c. councilman marion barry. jordan howe's father says the da should never have allowed his son's killer to roam the streets in the first place. >> you let the community down. ten children have been shot, four dead a result of you not doing your job. >> i understand the thing. i would be even more angry if i were him about everybody because death is a hard thing to do under any circumstances. >> the suspect in the death of howe who is seen here charged with second degree murder in connection to the shooting. in maryland, later today, lawmakers will debate pay cuts an furloughs for state workers. a proposal callsor the state to skip cost of living ion creases as well as merit pay and bonuses -- cost of living increases as well as merit pay and bonuses. d.c. releases its 011 budget today. prince george's county sheriff mike michael jackson is throwing his hat into the ring for the county's top job. democrat officially kicked off his campaign for county executive in temple hills. according to the maryland board of elekz, jackson will compete with two others for -- according to the maryland board of elections, jackson will compete with two others for the position. jack eve an and kwame brown say the councilmen will run. this year, april 1st has been designated census day. new this morning, the bureau director will be out at ben's chili bowl talking with the public and collecting census forms with the postmaster. at 11:00 a.m., d.c. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton will help hold a national rally to encourage precedents to be counted and mail in your census forms. another story making headlines this more than, a lawsuit over a work schedule. coming up next, we'll tell you about a woman who was denied sundays off. as we head to break right now, a quick check on the markets. both the dow and nasdaq coming if loss yesterday -- coming off a loss yesterday. [ male announcer ] with you when it's time to save. wachovia. a wells fargo company. checking headlines this morning. take a look at. this a chinese military recruit almost killed himself an his trainer after the grenade he threw bounced off after i wall and right back into the bunker. there you see it in the red circle. the grenade was set to explode in 3 1/2 seconds but the quick thinking trainer saved both their lives by throwing himself and another recruit behind a wall for cover right before the grenade exploded. police investigating a stabbing on board a bus in florida. surveillance cameras captured a fight between three passengers. one man pulled out a knife and tried to stab the other two. one of the ving timbes was stabbed in the chest and had to be airlifted. the bus deliver pulled over, opened the door and the suspect ran off. a man sued lowe's so he could get sunday off to go to church. mark bueller says lowe's refused his request, demoted him and made him work more sundays than the other workers mentd lowe's didn't address the algages. the eeoc says the company denied the request because they didn't want to encourage other workers to make similar requests. he penned grate story lines for hit tv shows and wave learned that veteran write david mills has died. an hb spokesman confirmed the death. it's technology that we have ban seeing on the big korean for years but now,s in the your living room. i'm matt ackland, i'll explain -- on the big screen for engineers but now, it's in your living room. m matt ackland. i'll explain. because we were able to feed not just the staff at the whitehouse but reprovided food to people at homeless shelter. we used that food to feed a lot of people but we also began a conversation about getting kids and parents and teachers all across the country thinking about living healthy. >> because last year's planting was such a huge success, the first lady is expanding the spring garden by 500 feet. >> a good day to be outside. >> i wonder how many of those youngsters had never heard of rhubarb. kind of an old vegetable. >> funny how some vegetables just don't make the cut anymore. >> they need better p. r.. beats are kind of going that way too. they need some work. >> it will albright nice day today. >> it will be a great day. i think we'll start with the temperature trend p to show a graphic rather. we'll show you where we're headed. i said earlier our average high for this time of year, 61 degrees. you want to add 17 degrees to that for today's high. 78degrees . and then by the weekend, we are adding more. even sunday, when we get a few more clouds coming in, 79 degrees will be the high on sunday. can we turn the prmpter there. let's take a look at the current temperatures around the region. here we go. 49degrees here in the district. 45 up in gaithersburg. 3-9d in frederick and 50 in hagerstown. that is a pretty interesting difference there in temperatures. significant difference too. quantico, 43 degrees. cambridge, maryland at 45 degrees. we did show you some very warm temperatures in parts of the south central plains yesterday, up to 98 degrees for one part of texas. meanwhile, we've got this high pressure in the eastern u.s. that is going to be influencing our weather and keeping things calm and allowing that warm air to workits way in here during the course of the next several days. any weather that will happen will go around us. now, take a look at the futurecast. we start with this morning t does show of those clouds pushing in but by this afternoon, nothing happening. really by later this morning, nothing happening. quiet, calm, temperatures increase. it will be a warm day. you could class pie it as you hot day tomorrow. clear skies will continue and then saturday, more sunshine. by sunday, we have a weak cold front that is approaching us. it will bring some clouds in here. right now, we don't think it will bring precipitation. might there be a shower or sprinkle late in the day or that evening? possibly but right now we don't really think so. the forecast for washington for today looks like this. 7 # degrees for your high downtown. sunny skies. mild winds. that is another big difference from yesterday. then your five-day forecast. -- 78 degrees for your high downtown. now, let's find out what is happening with traffic. for that, we go to julie wright. >> i just said did he say hot date or hot day. >> which would you prefer?
