The senate has reached a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. Stands in the hands of the republican controlled house where future remains uncertain. Will john boehner and other house members approve of the plan as well . Melanie is live this morning to tell us more about it. Sure hope something can be reached. Good morning. Reporter good morning, allison. Weve just learned the house is going to convene at noon. But they are under no obligation to put this bill up for a vote today. We believe they are going to start picking apart pieces of this legislation to see exactly what is in a senate deal. Could schedule it for a vote or decide to kick it back to the senate. There is hope there will be some action on it late today or early wednesday. The deal was approved by the senate after 2 00 in the morning on new years day. Income tax rates will remain the same for most americans. But individuals making 400,000 and couples making 450,000 will see their taxes go up. 109 billion in spending cuts, those have been delayed. Also included in the package were fixes to the alternative tax and a compromise on the estate tax that will prevent dairy prices from spiking. Senate leaders said its a less than perfect plan but the best deal they could forge at the last minute. We dont think taxes should be going up on anyone. But we all knew if we did nothing, theyll be going up on everyone today. We werent going to let that happen. Each of us could spend the rest of the week discussing what a perfect solution would have looked like but the end result would have been the largest tax increase in the american history. Im disappointed we werent able to make the grand bargain as weve tried to do for so long but we tried. If we do nothing, the threat of a recession is very real and passing this agreement does not mean negotiations halt. Far from it. We can all agree theres more work to be done. I thank everybody for the patience today. Reporter one tax bit will be going up for workers is the Social Security payroll tax. There was a 2 payroll tax holiday enacted two years ago and putting that back in this bill was not part of the deal. So that tax holiday allowed to expire. About 20 a week from workers paychecks will be going back to the Social Security trust fund instead of into their pockets. Back to you guys. All right. Thank you very much. Happening now, gay marriage ceremonies in maryland. Same sex couples some of them started taking their vows at the stroke of midnight. Marriage licenses were given out on december 6th. But the new law didnt go into affect until the new year. Dozens of same sex weddings are scheduled for today. This day would not be possible if not for people like patrick. For nearly ten years hes been in the fight for ten years. They were one of the first couples to sue maryland for Marriage Equality. Patrick joins us by phone to talk about this historic day. Good morning to you. Happy new year. Good morning. Happy new year. How are you feeling today . Im excited. Its a new year. New opportunity for same sex couples in maryland. You have been with your husband dave since 2001. This journey, could you tell us about it for all of the viewers and folks listening today . What has it been like . You were part of the couples lawsuit in maryland for the equality lawsuit in 2004. Its been a long road. Yeah. Its been a long hard struggle. And dave is a native for maryland. It was important to him to have full equality. And weve been part of this struggle for a long time. We wanted the state to recognize us and give us full equality as a married couple and we finally made it. Lets go on the other side without full equality what are some of the hurdles or stumbling blocks you would run into as a couple been together since 2001 as long or longer than many married couples out there. What are some of the hurdles . Its a lot of the things many married couples take for granted. If one of us were to fall sick to visit each other in the hospital. To take care of each other and have the rights to consent to medical care and things like that if Something Like that happens. But really, what it really comes down to is being recognized as full citizens in maryland and thats whats most significant about this day, i think. Voters went to the polls. This is one of the issues there on the ballot. How did you feel that day . Were you confident maryland would vote in your favor or did you have apprehension . I knew the polls were in our favor but also very close and i know that the opponents to Marriage Equality were out there spreading the misinformation about what would happen if marriage rights were granted to same sex couples. But we were cautiously optimistic the voters would recognize that this is really just a matter of fairness. This though does remain controversial and one of those issues that tends to be divisive as far as the entire country goes. What is your message for those who look at this with disapproval . I think that the time is changing and really this is just a matter of love and recognizing the love that two people share for each other. And more and more people are recognizing that and i think that this year was a real turn in the tide for Marriage Equality and i think its only a matter of time before more and more states are recognizing it. Before we let you go, you did marry legally in the district in 2011 but now make maryland your home. How does that feel on this day . Well, you know, weve always had maryland as our home but we took the metro ride down to the district to get married and this means that really that maryland the state that we live in and have lived in ive lived here for the past 9 years and dave has lived here his whole life. That this is the state we call home is really going to give us full recognition of our relationship. Were excited about that. Happy new year and send dave our regards.
