so, you know, they are just getting to daylight and i'm sure they will see lots of damage with the storm. >> can i ask you a question? you mentioned obviously it's a different intensity than katrina. but katrina moved faster. so these areas where you see those big bands of rain there, they are just getting inundated hanging over there. it's moving so slowly so we'll see real, real serious flooding. the forecast for the next 10 to 12 hours is to track off to the north and west keeping its hurricane status for six to eight hours so unfortunately the rain is just going to continue through the middle to the end of the day for the big city of new orleans there. and i think they will likely have some flooding issues. hopefully the levees will hold but definitely going to have flooding issues later today. >> mm, mm, mm. it's a big storm extending to pensacola. >> hey, want to point out quickly some highlights that i picked out just in the past couple of hours with this storm. maximum wind gusts i found so far 78 miles per hour in boothville, rain 9" at lake front airport on lake ponchartrain on the northern side of the city and the storm surge 10 feet in shell beach, louisiana. so the numbers will continue to come in and we'll see how much damage was done overnight now with daylight reaching new orleans. sticking with isaac, it has knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers in and around new orleans and into neighboring mississippi. last hour we spoke with emergency officials in hancock county, mississippi, just east of new orleans. they told us that the main highway that runs along the gulf is closed in several stretches because of storm surge flooding. they are expecting that to worsen because high tide is still to come this morning. remember, it's only 9:02 right now. >> boy. look at these pictures. you will remember some of this. isaac's arrival similar to katrina. it hit 7 years ago today as category 3. it's not as long is, moving slowlies across the region, isaac. 1800 people in louisiana and mississippi died in the wake of katrina. new orleans will commemorate the bells at st. louis cathedral. we don't know in that will happen, we will let you know later in the day. mitt romney was not handed success. he built it! no one will work harder. no one will care more. i'm still in love with that boy i met at a high school dance. and he still makes me laugh. >> ann romney making her case for husband mitt romney at the republican national convention. new jersey governor chris christie gave the keynote address. tonight, paul ryan will take his turn. wisdom is back with the highlights of the gop convention now. wiz. >> there will be more high- profile republicans speaking at the second full day of the convention. last night as you said, ann romney and chris christie were the most anticipated speeches. even virginia got into the mix. now, mitt romney officially clinch. the gop nomination when he topped the 1144 delegate threshold. the party used virginia governor bob mcdonnell to introduce the platform that republicans will run on this year. it would ban all abortions, gay marriage, reshape medicare into a voucher-like program and cut taxes to energize the economy and create jobs. now, both governor mcdonnell and keynote speaker chris christie hit president obama hard on the economy. >> while the obama administration borrows now $3 billion a day, just to keep the lights on, republican governors have closed $65 billion in budget shortfalls without raising taxes! >> if you're willing to hear the truth, to hear the truth about the hard road ahead and the rewards for america that truth will bear, i'm here to begin with you this new era of truth-telling, tonight we choose the path that has always defined our nation's history. tonight, we finally and firmly answer the call that so many generations have had the courage to answer before us. tonight, we stand up for mitt romney as the next president of the united states and together... [ applause and cheers ] >> vice-presidential nominee paul ryan is expected to introduce himself as a product of a small town values in his much-anticipated speech tonight and governor romney is slated to give his acceptance speech tomorrow night. >> thank you. as the republicans continue their convention in florida, president barack obama will be back on the campaign trail today in virginia. the president will be in charlottesville this afternoon for a rally at a concert venue. on tuesday, the president campaigned in two other battleground states, ohio and colorado. the president is breaking a long-standing tradition of candidates not campaigning when the opposing party is hosting its convention. and checking our other top stories this morning, a fiery crash on i-95 north near the mixing bowl got the rush hour off to a bad start. look at this video. the tanker crashed on the ramp from northbound 95 to the fairfax county parkway just after 2:00 this morning. the driver was killed in this accident. an eyewitness who shot this video said he was out walking his dog when he heard a loud explosion. >> across the street from it, there was a lot of fire and some of the flames at one point easily would have been 1,000 feet or more. it dwarfed everything that was even close by. >> right now, the ramp from westbound fairfax county parkway to 95 north remains closed. there's concern this morning about a missing montgomery county man who is confined to a wheelchair. the 23-year-old ali alhaeri from dickerson maryland was seen last night at the falls grove shopping center on shady grove road in rockville. mr. alhaeri is paralyzed. he has a tattoo on the left arm and in in a black motorized wheelchair. d.c. police have released new surveillance vwill lead to suspect or suspects following the severe beating and robbing of a capitol hill man. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live at police headquarters with the latest. melanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, investigators believe the surveillance video was captured shortly after that violent assault on tc maslin on august 18. here it is. the video is from the exxon gatt station on pennsylvania avenue not far from where tc maslin was attacked. investigators need help identifying the car, which is believed to be a 2005 hyundai sonata and looks like there are three people inside. one at the gas pump, one in the front passenger seat and one in the rear passenger seat. police say they were attempting to use maslin's credit card at the gas station. maslin as you may know had been out on a friday night spending the evening first at the nats game then a late-night snack at the tune-in on pennsylvania avenue. he was robbed and violently assaulted while walking home after midnight. the crime has shaken up the capitol hill community. >> well, i live on the him. i have a business on the hill. -- well, i live on the him hill. i have a business on the him. it's horrible what happened. robbery is one thing but violence makes no sense. >> my neighborhood is unsafe. last time i was here the police commander told me it was safer than 10 years ago and i said well i felt safer 10 years ago. >> reporter: robberies in the city spiked 53% in the first two months of the year. the police chief said police have done a lot of hard work on the robberies and since then, that the crime increase is now down to just a 9% increase but it is still an increase. maslin's wife said her husband has undergone a second brain surgery and is starting to respond to simple commands. >> that's a little bit of good news. thank you, melanie alnwick. family and friends are getting ready to say their final good-byes to the man shot to death outside the empire state building. today that man will be laid to rest in westchester county. 41 years old man was shot and killed last week by a former co- worker who blamed him for being fired last year. also, where's the money? that question from the family members of victims in the colorado shooting. they say some $5 million have been donated since the shooting but they haven't seen any of it. one relative says the first disbursement of funds went to various charities instead of the victims of the shooting. the head of the community first foundation says the organization is in the process of arranging a meeting with the victims. a health alert now as we head towards flu season. federal health officials warn that children with neurological disorders face a higher risk from dying of the flu. a cdctudy found of the 300 flu-related deaths in children in 2009, 60% had an underlying condition. 2/3 of those kids had a disorder such as cerebral palsy or epilepsy. cdc doctors stressed the importance that these children get the flu vaccine. coming up, we are going to introduce you to a man who is living proof that if you enjoy your job, you can have a very long career. you don't want to miss the story. >> also, what's next for samsung? slapped with a hefty fine, the company now faces losing eight of its popular phones. so what does the battle between apple and the world's largest cell phone maker mean for you and for me quite frankly with that samsung phone of mine? lauren demarco joins us after the break with some insight. >> a lot of questions there. as we head to the break, here's a look at another back-to- school picture. this is brooke on her first day of kindergarten. >> if you want to send in your back-to-school pictures, go to [email protected]. we'll be right back. it's 9:11. he's made his choice. but what choices will women be left with? just like mitt romney, paul ryan would get rid of planned parenthood funding. in congress, ryan voted to ban all federal funding for planned parenthood and allow employers to deny women access to cancer screenings and birth control. and both romney and ryan backed proposals to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest. for women... for president... the choice is ours. i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. united airlines hopes a computer problem is behind them. a network outage yesterday impacted operations at airports and on its website meaning long lines at ticket counters. united said it had at least 200 delayed flights after the system stopped working for about 2.5 hours. ouch! at one point, the airline stopped sending planes to its hubs in newark and san francisco. >> hm. kind of tied into that, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to congratulate this man, ron, the 83-year-old and recent retiree named by the guinness world records as the longest sec flight -- longest serving flight attendant for any carrier. he spent more than 63 years in the cabin. now on the ground he is spending time in colorado with his grand children. a face-off between apple and samsung, samsung ordered to pay a fine after the judge ruled the phone giant it was guilty of patent infringement. next they could have to pull some phones from shelves. >> so what does all this legal dramamine for you the consumer? lauren demarco joins with us a guest to help us sort out the details. >> reporter: the jury found it willfully copied apple's ipad and it is a landmark case. the fine i $1billion. apple demands 8 phones be banned from the u.s. market. we have a representative from a group in the d.c. region joining us to weigh in. so good morning to you, pete. >> good morning. >> thanks for joining us again here at the smartphone zone. >> nice to be here. >> i want to talk about these eight devices first off. so there's another date at the and of september where they are going to have a hearing talk about this whether it will actually happen possibly, they are waiting to see if it does at the end of september. so what's going to happen to people who own these phones. the consumers are going to be protected. if these devices do in fact -- if they have to come off the shelf, anyone who bought one will still have the warranties and still be able to use the device. consumers won't be penalizeed. >> do you think you should get one now? >> i think that if you really want one of these devices, yeah may be a time to get one but these big legal battles are -- they take time to sort out. this ruling is just the first of many lings that's going to come down and one of many lawsuits that are going to happen between these large organizations, these large technology companies. >> the other thing that apple plans to ask the judge to triple the damages to more than $3 billion. do you think even though those numbers sound huge to us, $3 billion is just a slap on the wrist. a lot of the talk is about how samsung's strategy was to copy the iphone as closely as possible or mimic it as closely as possible because obviously apple had hit into a very good market and it paid off for samsung. they are the number 2 smartphone manufacturer in the world, made billions and they have made a reputation for themselves and making billions. in the grander scheme of things, this judgment is really not that big. but strategically it's important. >> it sounds like maybe this was a battle in a war that could be coming possibly against google and android the a huge competitor. >> that's right. so the thing to remember is that eric schmidt, google's ceo, used to sit on apple's board and on 2009 he was asked to leave the board when it was revealed google was making the android operating system that would act a lot like the iphone's operating system. so steve jobs in his biography is quoted as saying he was willing to go thermonuclear against google. what you're seeing is this was even more about apple versus google android than about apple and samsung. samsung was just the perfect target for this lawsuit because they made a device that looked like the iphone and used the google operating system. so this whole thing is really about much bigger forces at work between apple and android. >> what do you think will happen for all the android lovers? do you think this could be the beginning. end for android or do they have a case? >> i don't think it's the end of android. folks like microsoft with windows 8 coming out, the samsung is a handset manufacturer. there are several other handset manufacturers like htc and lg. nokia and motorola and others. and they have got options now with regards to which operating system they use. so it represents a challenge for google. >> very interesting stuff. and we wanted to mention really quick that you have something coming up with microsoft. >> so we have an event called modev tablet about the tablet industry because it's a very interesting and unique industry. modev tablet.com, there will be several announcemes coming. >> very cool. thank you for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> helping to weed through all that. back to you guys. >> thank you. a lot of people no longer carry cash but that's no excuse not to tip. at least according to one new york man. his new invention, his device is straight ahead. >> plus, hip-hop star will.i.am making history teaming up with nasa to unveil his latest single. we'll have a sneak peek next. first, let's check back in with holly. good morning. >> take a look at that, allison. >> reporter: we are spending the morning at hillwood estate museum and gardens. spectacular. if you have never been here or haven't been in a while, we are going it show you firsthand why now is the time for you to come and visit for yourself. that's all live later in the hour. >> thanks. as we head to the break, check it out. an unexpected passenger in a canoe off australia's gold coast. that's a koala bear. >> awww. >> they're not great swimmers. so this little one swam through and hitched a ride. the woman who shot the video says everyone on board was afraid the koala might drown. so they gave it -- hello! hello, mister. so they gave him a lift. we'll be right back. can we just watch this for the rest of the show?
