allison: it's june 30th. the year is half over. >> we were saying it starts to feel like summer and july is around the corner and now tomorrow it will be summer and july. >> temperatures overnight in some spots back in the 50s. good morning, everybody. another beautiful day. how about bright sunshine, blue skies, low humidity and highs today back in the mid-80s. enjoy it because we're in for a lot of heat around here into the weekend. there is a look at your satellite radar. i don't have much to show you because there is not a lot to talk about. quiet conditions here in washington. look out to the west in chicago, cleveland, all the way out to nashville, clear skies. and with high pressure building in over the next couple of days we'll be high and dry around here with a warming trend. not so much today. today and tonight will be fine. but into the weekend we're back into the 90s. temperatures, right now at reagan national, 68 degrees. 50s still in places like frederick. 53 right now in baltimore. ocean city 66. and winchester 63. forecast is a good one. a lot of sunshine and highs later today mid-80s. 86 in washington, 82 in annapolis. and 84 in manassas. the breeze is out of the north at 10 miles per hour. more details in the forecast and i'll show you the weekend warmup and we'll look at tropical storm arleen in minutes. julie wright has your traffic. the outer loop of the beltway was troubled early with the accident as you continue westbound on 495 at new hampshire avenue. the accident out of the roadway but delays on the beltway before this exit to go northbound on i-95 and in the direction of silver spring. also finding delays on south on 95 out of laurel to connect to the beltway and continue toward georgia avenue. you've got delays inbound on 50 out of riverdale into northeast. suit band parkway headed for south capital street and the douglas bridge, it's heavy, slow and steady. 295 on the brakes approaching malcolm x. incident there on the shoulder. delays on 66 from manassas between the two 234 interchanges. traffic is slowing here as you continue eastbound into centreville. slow traffic from fair oaks into the beltway. that's a check former county executive leslie johnson is expected to plead guilty today to obstruction charges. sherry ly joins us live from outside of the courthouse in greenbelt with more. >> reporter: good morning. this marks the device of one of the most powerful political couples. leslie johnson is accused of hiding cash in her undergarments. she's expected to plead guilty in the probe that led to her and her husband's downfall. she is charged with obstruction of justice and evidence and witness tampering. the fbi said johnson tried to hide $79,000 in her bra and then flush a $100,000 check down the toilet as agents were at the door. it was bribery money her husband jack johnson took from developers. she was aest ready last -- she was arrested last november and sworn in in january. once convicted she will have to step down. she had already been striped of any committee positions leaving her with limited voting power. >> i voted for him and her too and is with just really shocked at the politicians we trust so much would let us down like that. >> reporter: and johnson is due to appear in court for a plea agreement at 10:00 this morning. this is the second time a hearing has been scheduled. one last month was canceled days before it was due to happen. her husband jackson son pleaded guilty last month to extortion, conspiracy and witness and evidence tampering. he faces 20 years in prison for each count that he pled guilty to. he also admitted that he took more than $400,000 in bribes. that's the latest here in greenbelt, back to you. >> sherry, thank you very much. new this morning, a rude wake-up call for some car owners in falls church. three vehicles went up in flames overnight. this happened in the parking lot of a condo complex on george marshall drive. investigators say one of the vehicles was set on fire and that the flames spread to the other cars. a photo taken by someone who lives at the complex appears to show the white bmw on the -- on the left was targeted vehicle. a shocking scene near the white house as a woman falls to her death from a hotel. this happened last night after 11:00 at the w. hotel on 15th street northwest. the washington post reports witnesses told police the woman had been drinking at the hotel's rooftop bar. the witnesses also said the woman climbed over a fence on the rooftop and was later seen holding on to an overhang below the roof before she fell. the man who tried to burn down a germantown apartment building will spend the rest of his life in jail. raymond masters was sentenced yesterday to 24 life sentences for the january 19th, 2010 file or eagle test court. investigators say masters was targeted a montgomery county police officer who investigated him. he disabled the sprinkler system and cut the power and poured gasoline on all three floors. >> due to the heroic efforts of the fire department we might be here with a tragedy in montgomery county because of the absolute total disdain for human life reflected by raymond masters. >> no one was hurt notice fire. masters was found guilty of 24 counts of attempted first- degree murder and other charges. montgomery county police believe an old photograph could help in the search for possible sex assault victims. 48-year-old christopher chandler is accused of rape in the late 70s. this is a picture of him now and when he was a teenager in silver spring. there may be more victims who didn't recognize him from the recent photo. he was arrested in march. a follow up on a deadly tour bus crash in virginia. the wife of the man said her husband was tired ant didn't want to make the trip. the man dozed off behind the wheel about 35 miles north of richmond. the bus hit an embankment and overturned killing four people. she said her husband climbed behind the wheel because he feared for his job. in a statement to the newspaper, the company attorneys denied all wrongdoing in connection with the crash. d.c. council may delay the launch of the government run online gambling program. at a hearing on wednesday, several council members, including tommy wells, were concerned that city would not have control over where online gaming was established but the lottery commission said it will not be offered in places where children can access it. lottery officials say gambling venues will be certified the same way they do lottery ticket outlets. >> and i think the concerns are valid and the board has to take them into account. i think the places they are contemplating are not, for example, public spaces, they are not schools, libraries, rec centers, senior citizen places, where there are vulnerable individuals. >> the attorney general said he does not endorse or condemn the plan. his job is to deal with the legality of the proposal. another big story this morning, tough talk on the looming deadline to reach a deal on a new debt ceiling. president obama is challenging congress to cancel the july 4th recess if they can't get closer to an agreement. doug luzader has the latest on the battle. >> reporter: the house is already on vacation, the senate leaves town on friday. but that schedule may change. in a lengthy press conference, president obama all but calls congress a bunch of slackers. his treasury secretary said they have until august 2nd before they begin to default on debt and the president said lawmakers should take a message from his daughters. >> malia and sasha generally finish their homework aday ahead of time. malia is 13, sasha is 10. >> reporter: but malia is 12, but the point remains. and it's no wonder the white house is taking on congress. while the president's approval rate ago cording to a fox news poll has fallen to 46%, compare that to congress who just 20% of voters think they are doing a good job. republicans blame the president for the combined budget and debt impasse and yes, they went there, bringing up his passion for golf, the president has lf, he's succeeded ing 76 in securing zero votes for his budget proposal. >> reporter: the funding golf comes down to a question of taxes versus spending cuts. republicans want more cuts, the president wants congress to sign off on more taxes. >> you stay here and let's get it done. >> reporter: and it may come to that, even after a high-level meeting yesterday between the president and senate democrats, there is still no agreement in sight. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. it's 7:11 now on this thursday morning and it is no secret that the westboro baptist church is a source of [ music ] oh, my goodness, this goes back. >> to the grease days. >> olivia newton john. >> and this is one of those karaoke favorites. i've heard this song destroys on many occasion. >> exactly. tucker you have destroyed it a few times. >> once or twice. >> tucker is good at any song he sings. >> it is fairly true. let me do the weather. i'm better at that. i want to show you tropical storm arlene because it's making landfall as we speak. officially at about 5:15 this morning near cabo rojo, mexico. maximum winds 65 miles per hour. continues to move inland to the west at about 9 miles per hour. and this is going to be a rain- maker and they are expecting upwards of 8-10 inches of rain. and we've been talking about the heat across the desert southwest and this will be pulled to the north and west and bring rain to the southwest which is phoenix and that's good news. and great start to the day. temperatures in the 50s. still hanging out in the 50s in gaithersburg. 69 here in the city. annapolis now 71 degrees. and 68 in fredericksberg. forecast today, going to be beautiful. 86 with a lot of sunshine. tomorrow we warm up into the low 90s. humidity returns this weekend and with avengence. we'll have a big party around here. saturday, sunday and even monday in the low to mid-90s with a chance of isolated thunderstorm on sunday and into monday. but most of the weekend dry. >> it's a typical 4th of july. it's what we expect. thank you, sir. let's check in with julie wright and look after traffic. good morning. >> good morning. you mean tucker and i don't get to do our karaoke version. >> i thought it was beautiful. >> the sandy part would be good. >> i would like that. i think that would be great for you two to do. >> should we? we'll do a duet. >> are you here on monday? >> no. >> maybe tomorrow. >> i'm not here tuesday either. >> we don't have time now. >> i need to practice. >> but dan our producer, we have a bunch of accidents on the web. we don't need to add to that. the crew in sky fox, here is accident number one. on route 1 south of 198 at bowie road where we had the crash in the two left lanes. unfortunately this person has lost their bumper. the two left lanes on the northbound side of route 1 approaching 198. we'll take it back inside and update the ride elsewhere. traveling inbound along 66 and it's heavy and slow as you travel inbound leaving manassas through centreville and continuing eastbound toward vienna metro and again at the capital beltway. new problem to report this time around on the outer loop of the beltway as you approach the bw parkway. the crash here tieing up the right lane as you travel in the direction of greenbelt and toward college park. and then we have the delays coming southbound on 95 working from 198 down to the beltway. about a 30-minute commute to connect with the outer loop and continue in the direction of silver spring. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. a delay for the planned h. street street cars as they are finishing up construction. but according to wtop it could be 2013 before it is available to riders. they had hoped to have it done by 2012 but now need more time to get it done. a majority of drivers in our area support red light cameras. they surveyed 13,000 people that use red light cameras and have been for a while. in the district 78% of drivers surveyed say they think red light cameras are a good idea. one study found red light cameras have cut the number of fatal crashes caused by red- light-running by 24%. and the man in charge of our armed services for four years resigns today. this is robert gates' last day on the job. the president will attend a farewell tribute at the pentagon this morning at 9:45. there will be traffic delays in the area because of that. an unusual training method at the fbi sparking controversy. the agency brought in members of the controversial westboro baptist church to train agents and police officers. church members are known for protests and there are claims that god is punishing the military for the nation's acceptance of homosexuality. the fbi apparently brought the church members in as part of the counter terrorism training so agents could talk to people with extreme points of view. the sessions happen at the bureau facility in manassas and quantico. when top leaders found out, the bureau was told not to invite the church members back. 20 minutes past the hour. wildfires burning out of control in the southwest. let's check in ainsley earhart. >> reporter: firefighters are trying to keep fire away from a new mexico lab. i'm ainsley earhart and that story is coming up. and the defense could rest today in the casey anthony trial but not before more tears on the stand for casey's farther. details coming up. and holly working with pretty smart individuals at the international submarine competition. that's all they do, human- powered subs. she'll bring us up to speed. coming up, we're back after the break. it's 7:20.  welcome back. 7:23 now. the defense in the casey anthony murder trial is expected to rest today. it's still not known if she will take the stand to answer questions about whether she killed her daughter caylee in 2008. yesterday the defense suggested caylee accidentally ground at her grand parent's pool and the grandfather's suicide attempt was motivated by guilt. >> i needed at that time to go and be with caylee. >> and you expressed that in the note? >> yes, i did. because i believe i failed her. >> were you prevented from accomplishing your goal by the intervention of law enforcement? >> yes. if it wouldn't have been for law enforcement, i would not be here today. >> george anthony denied accusations from the defense that he sexually abused his daughter. to new mexico where crews are continuing to battle the los alamos fire. the epa has started to test the air. we get more on this story from ainsley earhart. >> reporter: 800 firefighters are battling the flames on the ground in los alamos, new mexico. the conditions are difficult. for man 100 square miles are charred. >> it's hands on the ground and tools in the dirt and working hard with the hose down there and nothing to do except for man power. >> reporter: one official said the fire could double or triple in size. the massive wildfire is burning close to one of the nation's two nuclear weapons labs. >> at this point we're waiting for either a break in the weather, a break in the fuels burning, those are the two things that we need to get around to the front of it. >> reporter: people who live near the national lab are worried about the fire reaching the lab. it could create a radio active smoke plume. the environmental protection agency has sent out a special plane to join the fight against the fire. plane can detect hazardous materials in the smoke. >> we're seeing just the results we would see in any other fire. there is no additional material in the sample from lab activities. >> reporter: thousands of scientific experiments are now on hold at the lab, despite the fears in the community, experts on nuclear engineering are confident that a fire will not scatter any radio active material. ainsley earhart, fox news. >> thank you very much. how about turtles on the tarmac. you've probably never heard that before as a reason for your flight being delayed. >> it happens at jfk in new york. 150 turtles crawled across the runway in search of beaches to lay their eggs. workers from the department of agriculture scooped up the turtles. this is not the first time they have slowed up planes. in 197970 turtles migrate add cross the runway to mate. >> that's a turtle hangout, the place to be. >> not where i would want to hang out but to each their own. 7:26 on this thursday morning. the president taking congress to task for not dealing with the debt ceiling. so will his pep talk do any good? [ music ] you need that on a day like today. >> old school today. >> i was talking about my singing earlier, but we'll talk about my dancing in a minute. >> this is not good. we're going to inspire tucker. >> would you rather see tucker sing grease with julie wright or dance? >> i don't encourage that. >> i would rather see him dance than sing. >> everybody has seen me dance before and it's pretty bad. >> they're both pretty bad. i'm not good at either. all right, sir, well the weather is wonderful. the weather is perfect here. we're going to be nice and die on saturday and most of sunday so i know a lot of out door plans and barbecues, that kind of thing. swimming and all systems go. beaches too. i'll show you the beach forecast in just a couple of minutes. let's get started with a look at headlines. i don't need to tell you if you look out your window, a lot of sunshine today and expecting bright blue sky and throughout the day today and just like yesterday the humidity should stay low. so dew point temperatures yesterday in the 50s, a repeat performance later today. you know the good can't last forever around here this time of year and here we go, heat and humidity back with avengence this weekend. dew point temperatures will be climbing and plenty uncomfortable around here so plan ahead and a lot of water into the weekend. and right now i know you are looking forward to july 4th. most of the weekend looks fine and dry. independence day looks hot. could be a late-day storm. we'll see about that. most of the day looks dry into the 4th as well. temperatures overnight bottoming out in the 50s and low 60s. right now in washington we're 69 at reagan national. 63 in gaithersburg. leonardtown, southern maryland, good morning, you are 68 degrees. partinsberg is 63. in and in hagerstown we're at 63 as well. and just a fine start out there. and afternoon highs back into the mid-80s. that's where we should be this time of year so it should be comfortable. satellite radar, i don't have a lot to show you. there is nothing going on. very quiet across the mid- atlantic, from virginia to maryland and into new jersey looking fine. west virginia and ohio, high pressure out here and this area will move in later on today. so that will keep us nice and
