joini right to the school delays and closures for tomorrow the following school district are fn a two-hour delay in maryland, charles county, frederick county, prince george's countyie and anne arrundel county public schools. those two hour delays in virginia include culpeper, fairfax county, loudon and manassas park city public schools. public schools are canceled in fauquier counties manassas cityt publicie schools, prince william county schools. fox5 has live team coverage for you tonight from the roads tooas how school district are handlinn this winter blast. let's begin tonight with sue palka and the freezing effectsen we're going to see overnight. hi, sue. >> hi, shawn and tony it is absolutely a bitter blast.ast. i forget how this feels. i have to mention it wasn't juss snow that we had today. it was this crunchy stuff, a combination snow and sleet and e let me tell you, listen to how hard us. it is completely solid out here. we are concerned about this vers hard freeze we're going to havet tonight leading to some black ice. wisconsin avenue here is boneis dry thanks to all the winds thad we had earlier today. here's a brave sole going by without a coat. anyplace that had a little bitei of melting today it likely froze around 9:00 tonight and these winds aren't going to be able to do much about that because it's already ice think.al we want you to have the big heads up that tomorrow morningrn bitter cold and black ice will be the two headlines.head so where is all of this wind and this bitter blast coming from? m it's still from the noreaster which is working its way up the coast where it continued to dump almost 33 inches of snow in end well new york. can you believe that? but all of this cold and wind is presens the deepening area of lowof l pressure as well as a highs we pressure that is going to be building in.bu that means we're headed for thee teens tonight oray if we're lucky. somebody just wrote to me ae little whiling a on twitter saying how much longer are wear going to have to deal with the big wind gusts? i think they're going to be through tomorrow. everyone is so bitter, d.c. has dropped to 30, but most places are blow 30 and into the mid 20s. what about the wind gusts? they are hard to take. still getting a gust to 41 in 41 the city. mid and upper 30s elsewhere.sewh what that translates into is a wind chill temperature thatpera already feels like it's in the teens t and some single digits. if you think that's bad i have one more stop four, tomorrow morning wind chill temperaturesc are going to be inhi the low to mid single digits. it won't get much better during the day. most of the day we're going to see the wind chills staying in thhiell teens and 20s with winds that will gust up and over 30 school parentso are frustrated with last minute decisions that left themhem scrambling today. first the school district decided to open late.te. halfway through the school datee they anouned all after schoolcho activities including after care were canceled. lindsay watts is live i attestedder elementary school. what are the mayor and the school chancellor saying aboutan these decisions? >> shawn and tony, unfortunately neither one of them would do an interview with us tonight and answer questions. parents, though, had a lot to say. happy camnyth percent as they p up their kids. especially for the parents to drop their kids off and then there was no after care. to pick up three hours of instructional time.me. clearly the new superintendent was not thinking or was badly advised. it was around 5:00 p.m. w d.c. made the call to open two hours late. as soon as kids dropped off theiopr kids, the district is cancelling after school activities, including childcare that parents rely on that goess until 6:00 p.m.un this wasti tweeted about half pt noon. parents got epa e-mail, but somt missed it. you're on your working mode, no, your personal e-mail. with their school convenientlyl next to a hill, kids were sleded ready after a quick day of we didn't have much learning. only 16 people in our class. >> oh, wow. i didn't know that.hat absences were the kay were excused. d.c. schools chancellor anton wilson wouldn't do an interview tonight but said in a letter to parents our priority is to open schools so we can provide students with instruction, supervision and nutrition. it was chancellor wilson who hsn made the call to cancel after school activities. d.c. public school spokes womank says it was made because of concern about freezing road conditions later in the evening. as far as the call to delay school today, that was made by mayor muriel bowser afterter consulting with the chancellor and other district agencies. overwhelmingly today, the parents we talked to feel like school should have just been canceled. it would have been the firstfirs snow school day for d.c. ps this live, lindsay watts, fox5 localo news. > the winter storm knocked the power out for thousands ofhous people in charles county. the county's department ofrtme emergency services opened an overnight emergency shelter to give residents a warm place to stay. fox5 anjali hemphill reports. >>reporter: well, tonight thenh recreational center has been turned into an emergency center. and while i'm told there's only one person staying here rightght now, the county is prepared fora any residents to come here and spend the night even bring their animals. i'm told submit could he crewsub have beenmi working non stop sie early morning hours to restore power to 14,000 people ineopl charles county alone. extra crews from the eastern shore and northern virginia were even brought in to deal with the workload mainly brought on byn the strong winds we had overnight. s.m. ko says they mainly dealtiy with fallen trees here am whichc fell on power lines power to homes during very coldd temperatures. good news is s.m. co tells me they are down to just a couple thousand in this area without power. most of those just pockets ever isolated outages. this emergency shelter at port tobacco recreational center will remain open if anyone needs the services. we are still dealing with verywith strong winds tonight as well ass temperatures dipping way blowow freezing causing some ice.e they are aware of that andat they're going to be working non stop on the roads out here until public schools on a two hur delay. > new at 10 tonight, amtrak will run on modified schedule tomorrow. it will effect travel between new york city and boston and nes york city a if you have a ticket it's best to call on time to make suree your train is running on time.te be extra careful because plain platform could be slippery and wet. if you live in alexandria watchd out for the sing hole. we're told this hole is about 30 to 40 feet deep. this afternoon a man drove his pickup truck right into the hole, firefighters had to rescuc him, the good news is he was not hurt. the whole was filling up withh water. workers drained it this afternoon. they set up cones around thearou sing hole. try and void that area, if you can. new at 10, a leak from the white house has forced the trump administration to releaseease details about the president's tax returns from 2005. the documents say he made more than $150 million in income that year and paid 38 million in income taxes. the president has repeatedly refused to release his returns, but tonight's release was a it came just minutes before rachel mat nows msnbc show which featured a report on the 2005 tax form. it's not clear conditions, you name it. all a part of winter's revenge. this over turned tractor-trailer jack-knifed on 9 # 5 south inn alexandria this morning. and overnight, a tree fell across the roadway in upper winter noreaster blanketing main street in historic when late winter ham pennsylvania creating treacherous driving conditionssr in the lehigh valley and beyond. during the heart of the blizzard snow fell at two to four inchess an hour across several states, including new jersey,new connecticut, massachusetts,s, vermont and maine impacting tens of millions of people. nearly 200,000 lost power and air travelers were stranded. i was headed to kentucky to see my son and my new grandbaby, but we got this far. the storm forced the cancellation of roughly 6,000 flights, including 99 percent of the scheduled air tr york's late winter guard what airport.ai it was a ghost town. mr. was nobody around.. wa it was lonely, nobody, just the team.am. there's nobody around. inland accumulations ranged from one to two feet or more with winds gusting 30 to 50 miles per hour creating white outte conditions on major interest states prompting several governors to declare states of emergency activating theatin national guard, closing schools and offers warning everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. that's good news so far, nono accidents. don't crowd the plows especially now that the snow is falling heavily across the commonwealth and let the road crews do their jobs. along the coast they flooded shore towns including atlantic i city rug some rescues, butnut because the storm's path shifted north and west manhattan and long island were spared the worst. they encouraged help out. if you have a senioreo citizen on your block, you have somebody who is homebound, who lives near
