badge after six decades on the job. >> how this montgomery county officer plans to serve well into his retirement. this is "fox 5 news" at 10. >> we begin tonight with heavy downpours and gusty winds moving through the d d.c. area. in fact some caused damage. i'm shawn yancy. >> i'm tony perkins. >> we have team coverage for you tonight. northwest where an apartment building seen significant dabling. we begin tonight with so you sue with the latest on the storm's track. >> it's been a busy night and this odd november day featured temperatures near 70 and created interesting downpours tonight that did not have any lightning with them. but have had strong and gusty winds. and at this hour we have a severe thunderstorm warning for southern portions of anne arrundel county. not because of lightning but that could gust to 60 miles an hour. we saw that line come through the district. we had a few waves. let me take you to ray sore so you can see where it is now. as we have light rain in and around the beltway the brighter colors came racing through the district and now they're over on the west side of the bay and severe thunderstorm warning for portions of anne arrundel and we'll go until 10:15 and again it's not lightning but it's incredibly heavy rain for a short amount of time as these downpours move northeast at 95. winds can gust to 60 and bring down limbs and trees. this is a big heads up for folks in the area to be aware you don't want to be in the path of any of this coming through. stay sheltered. it will cross the bay soon i put this in motion you can see how quickly it is moving. as we put on some of the city's that will be affected on the other side of the bay we're looking at stevensville and chester probably next seven 10:19 and bigger picture shows that we may not be done yet tonight because while we've had lines of heavy showers coming on through, back to the west, we still have more coming from pittsburgh to roanoke. that is with our frontal boundary. that still needs to swing through a little later tonight and this does not shut off until the frontal boundary passes. it's possible that there could still be a rumble of thunder as that comes on through and we will gradually clear overnight and see our temperatures staying in the 50s. to show us as well as winds these are outside of these heavy downpours. winds gusting 23, 25, 26 miles an hour and again inside some of these downpours we have clocked at least one gust in the city to about 50 to 45 miles an hour and in anne arrundel county we'll continue to watch it and it remains mild temperatures near 60 and feels a whole lot different tomorrow. we'll have another check of radar in a few minutes. tony. >> sue, as we've been talking and as we mentioned off the top of the show an apartment building in north west had significant damage from tonight's activity. d.c. fire and ems tweeted out this video of the damage on cedar street and that's where we find "fox5" laura evans. laura. >> tony we're in the 400 lock cedar street and it's incredible what happened here the winds picked up the roof over the building behind me hip the fire truck here. there's several the building 10 or 1 affected here and ten or twelve people displaced. i'll show you how far the roof was blown off the building. you see the black area in front of the fence there it's actually on the other side of that red car there timing is everything, right? but the roof actually blew across the street that's how strong the winds were. let me take you across the street and show you what we're talking about in terms of the damage and there are two fire trucks out here right now. get a tarp on top of the roof to make it obviously keep the rain from cominged in and i'll just make sure we're clear here to get safely walking up on to the area where this happened. and this happened around 6:44 and here is where the roof came down oh, let me just get that unstuck to walk through and the roof came down here right on to the grass and this is what she saw when he came home. >> my mouth dropped copy can't believe what is this, it looks like war zone peopling coming out of the building and the fireman was like you cannot go in. we have to assess the damage to before we let anyone in. anyway my son grabbed me and drabd me in the house with my dragged me into the house with my daughter-in-law and they said the roof had blown off. >> pat lived on one of the lower units in the building. it's more upper units affected by this and the red cross is here helping those people affected. it's not just this area where the roof came down. you see the roof here as well and you can hear on the other side as well here and you can hear the machines working right now what they're trying to do is get the water out of the building because so much water came rushing in because of the downpours of rainy want to show you one other thing if we turn around as the fire and ems crews were working to survey and see if neighborhood think found more damage on i corner building just a couple doors down there but that roof on the backside of the building that blew completely off as well these had to be strong winds. nobody is displaced from the building but again there are te building signatureed by the red cross tonight. this fix it continues to go on with repair roof and they'll be roofers out here tomorrow to repair this building. i'm laura evans, "fox5 local news". >> laura, just to be clear here and ask real quick the damage, incredible, is everyone okay? was anyone hurt out there? >> everyone is just fine. nobody is injured. nobody is injured. thankfully. and you know people are able to collect their stuff right now shelter where they can peacefully spend the night without rain pouring on top of their heads. >> what a mess. that is good news. thank you, laura. >> right now, prince george county police are questioning a man who they say may be connect todd a five hour barricade situation it start around 3 p.m. upper marboro with reports of break in and someone held hoingt tanl. sarah simmons picks up the story. >> it's all quiet now and that was not the case earlier valley force drive. surrounded for hours after someone called 9111 about a break in here. the roads were blocked off around the road for hours and initial reports came out that an armed man was inside possibly with a hoingt tam. officers finally entered into the home and found no one there. the police helicopter was then called into the search when investigators believe the suspect may have been armed and on the loose. and investigators eventually found a man outside the home in the general area and took him complexity of the investigation. >> when we went in the home there was no one. that doesn't mean information they had when they initially got on scene was incorrect. it's all very fluid and these things happen anyone realtime. so i'm not saying they were incorrect in assuming there was someone inside of the house. just that. that's what caused the barricade to be called when we went in after the perimeter was set up nobody was in inside. >> police are not calling the many suspect o time. upper marboro, "fox5 local news". >> and also in prince george country a council member is facing drunk driving charges. and earlier this month, police say mel franklin was driving his county-issued car when he rear ended another car stopped at a light route four upper marboro. he had a blood alcohol level of .10 fol following the incident. franklin is currently severing second tem representing upper new at 10:00 tonight a hour county man is facing multiple drug charges after he pled guilty to growing a large amount of marijuana inside his home. officers found the drugs danal sims house in may. they say this was the largest indoor pot growing operation in the county history. officers also discovered 75,000 in a metal safe. sims was released on bond and he's scheduled to be sentenced march 24. >> imagine how much a police officer from our area has >> next at 10:00, hear from the montgomery county police officer who spent his life serving the public. >> and plus, changing metro for the better. metro gm paul wiedefeld outlines his plans for improving the transit system over the next year including reduction in track delays. >> and today, president-elect donald trump pledge todd remove himself from the business ventures to focus on the presidency. so, what does that mean for his new trump hotel and the district. senator and former vice presidential candidate time kaine will joins us live in the studio. it's cane's first live sit down interview with the local television station since he lost his bid for the vice-president densey. you can catch the interview tomorrow morning 7:30. you love all-day breakfast. but you don't love that you can't get all your favorites. but now you can get more of what you love. so you can find something else to not love. voice. started fidel castro was not power. tonight his police and friends gather todd celebrate his retirement. lauren demarco was also there. lauren. >> shawn, lieutenant thomas j. cox longest serving police officer if a single agency in the state of maryland tonight the police chief told me he would not tell other officers to be like him because it would be asking too much his dedication unmatched. >> what kept you going? >> well i have to do something every day. and i prefer todd do this something else. >> reporter: a man of few words but love of a job is clear. sin the age of 6 lieutenant thomas j. cox knew he wanted to be a police officer. after spending three years in the army he joined the force at age 22. >> when i started back in 1955 and what i would do up till now. >> reporter: back then montgomery county was a different place. >> only a couple thousand people and 180 police. >> reporter: in six plus decades police dramatically. when cox started the sirens were happened operated inside police cars. >> they were not the way they are now. >> they didn't have radios on the car and they would put a light on top of the courthouse. >> that was before my time. >> executive officer he wrote the most tickets in the police department for all the officers. that's one thing about him. he is always cared about the community. he's always believed in doing what's northeast at about 45 to 50 miles an hour and big concern was that straight line wind damage. and we're not quite done just yet. we do believe that the f boundary could come through later tonight with a few more showers. that's what you see out here to the west. we'll see how much of that holds together across the mountains but don't be surprised if in the next two or three hours you see a little more pounding on the roof and gusty winds. there's report of wind damage we had tonight to the apartment building and 400 block of cedar street northwest close to tacoma park. we'll have another look tonight when the frontal boundary crosses later. it will be con tomorrow morning f we get showers be aware this is the kind of situation where we could pick up gusts to 0 or 40 as she come on through. it will be a dry and cooler thursday. tomorrow is december 1. how it that happen so fast. first day of meterological winter and it will be a day that features temperatures that will be a lot cooler than today and not terribly cold and still above average for december 1. the weekend does look and we see temperatures headed to 40s and that will feel a little more like december. our next chance of rain maybe sunday and another better chance next tuesday. here's what the situation is right now with the rain. most of the heavy rain pushed away and up into the philadelphia area. these individual downpours were moving northeast at 45 to 50 miles an hour. even that forward motion creating gusts on top of some of these down burst moving on motion last of lingering light rain around anne arrundel but we look to west because we have a batch of showers in the frontal boundary. doesn't look terribly impressive. that could come through in the next little while. we still may have a few more to deal
