for joining us tonight. i'm tony perkins. >> i'm shawn yancy. >> a northwest d.c. community gathered for a vigil tonight to remember a man killed during what appears to be a busted robbery in bloomingdale. >> marina tonight. they're concerned about the spike in crime in their community. >> reporter: they are and have been, tony, you know what the police chief outing robbyes down about 20% and reality in this northwest neighborhood and bloomingdale robberies are up 80% and this robbery that likely went awry related in one man's death. there you have seth rich, 27 years old and dnc employee and that memorial just outside his house and you see the sign here says he this life matters. and tonight's vigil was held outside seth rich's house 2 27-year-old dnc employee gunned down a block away from hishouse early sunday morning in the same neighborhood. there are no witnesses. and so far, no surveillance video that shows any trace of a potential suspect. help for rich a. cording to police sources, arrived almost immediately. he was still conscious after being shot twice but was unable to provide first responders any sort suspect description. based on 34reu78 preliminary evidence and bruises on his body it appears he fought for his life. his murder likely a bochd robbery. police response has been reactive after the murder and should have been a stronger presence when constant stream of armed robberies took place on the streets weeks prior. >> i have only seen more police presence since tragic event murder. even that is only a police presence in marked cruisers with blue and red lights on which to me is absolutely pointless. >> do you see them walking. >> do i not that is exactly the problem i perceive. >> it's about blaming. seth's parents don't want plam plame. they want justice. they want the police department to thoroughly investigate this crime. >> where were the police officers when all these people were being assaulted but everyone the neighbors here saying this was repeated act that happened days, weeks, months heating six months and now we see police activity after the death. it took a homicide toe bring the police out to the neighborhood. >> i'll tell you what, the bottom line is nobody should lose their life the way seth did and any time we see a homicide like this it's a failure on the part some part of our system. at the end of the day we have to make sure the system is functioning properly so that crimes like this don't occur. law enforcement has a very important part of that role. but at the end of the day we need to make sure gotta lert straight on smart phone there's a good chance you heard about the amber alert today for the 6 weekend baby girl. police believe she was with her mother a virginia woman and the two ended up found here in the hyattsville neighborhood and for several hours police were very concerned for that child's safety. >> and the baby is considered to be in danger and that's why the' putting amber alert out. >> fortunately 6 weekend liz catoon is safe tonight found six hours after amber alert was issued when a tip led investigators to the apartment dean drive in hyattsville and fairfax county police say they were contacted by child protective services because there was a court order calling baby's mother flora an unfit parent they say flora was at their offices sometime tuesday and when they went to take custody of the infant they couldn't find either one of them a van sitting outside the apartment complex matches description and sliceence plates of the vehicle listed in amber alert and no one answered door and one neighborhood told us off camera even though catoon's official address was false church he believes he was renting a room in hyattsville. police and federal officials took catoon back to fairfax county where she's facing parental abduction crosses and it's unclear why she was declared unfit mother as far as criminal history and we're able to look into that and we found she had several traffic violations among them several for children in vehicles not properly restrained. but that was back in 2011. the important thing is tonight that little baby is safe and in protective custody. that's the latest in hyattsville. in federal court on a weapons charge today. and 25-year-old ureceive surprise facing charges for interrupting four machine guns across state lines in exchange for $300. the fbi says he also told
