linger into your saturday. let's take a look at radar and show you what's going on. you can see we have a swath of precipitation moving its way towards the northeast and that pattern is just going to continue. another yas over the allegheny front and potomac highlands, by parts of tomorrow even talking about snow accumulations over higher elvaths vacations. we are talking more fog, more rain, more drizzle. we've been exactly where we should be. right now 44 at dc and at quantico. 42 at baltimore, 39 at gaithersburg, 42 at dulles and 40 degrees at culpeper. tonight clouds drizzle and fog, but more rainfall into this weekend. i'll have details coming up with your full forecast. of course that game forecast as well. >> thank you, gwen. new at 10:00 tonight the guardian angels are on patrol in the district. the crime-fighting volunteers kicked off a weekend of citywide crime patrols tonight. tisha lewis is live with the latest. >> reporter: well, shawn, the guardian angels say their focus is the red line, that's where there's been a rash of recent incidents as of late. they also say they have received in the last week more than a dozen complaints from fearful commuters. now they say their goal starting tonight is to help deter criminals. >> how do you feel when you see them? >> safe. we had a program like that in baltimore. definitely feel safe. >> reporter: the card gran angels sparked commuters to complain about safety. >> i remember when our chapter leader in washington told me teenagers were going to be given the right of free passage on the metro. i said oh, your officials may be asking for trouble. >> that's curtis sliwa via face time. what are you doing that they are not doing? >> we have the time to be able to approach young men, especially young men, they tend to be the troublemakers. we try to talk to the young men and women and we try to recruit them and believe it or not we've been successful over the years in turning many who looked like they were going to be an enemy of society and turn them into a protector. >> sliwa is based in new york. they're best known as unarmed crime prevention patrollers nationwide. >> it seems like it's a slap in the face to the police. >> the police are doing the best they can. >> having more uniformed police on metro may help. >> when you see uniformed police officers that's when the citizens feel safer. >> reporter: the metropolitan police department says it has always worked in partnership with the guardian angels. and they started their patrols this weekend for today from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. they'll be back out tomorrow and also sunday. if you're trying to reach them, if you have a few concerns, you can reach them on social media. go to dc guardian angel that's their user name on twitter. again, they say they have received several complaints and usually when they're doing these patrols they're in about a group of half dozen, maybe up to a dozen if the area. they work closely with police but they also urge commuters that if you see something suspicious, you can just use the phone in those emergency call boxes. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> in the meantime, metro just released this picture hoping you can identify the people in this group. investigators say it happened aboard a yellow line train on new year's day. if you recognize anyone in this photo, you're asked to call police. >> a north dakota man is under arrest tonight. he's accused of plotting to kidnap one of the president's dogs. he appeared in a dc courtroom today. the secret service tracked him down after a relative reported he was heading to washington to kidnap one of the dogs. he was arrested after officers found an unregistered shotgun, rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his truck. he admitted to sending a text because he heard the obamas were not. he now claims he was kidding. >> kidnap a dog? how stupid is that. >> i guess it's concerning but at least he didn't get into the white house like what happened earlier. >> he was released on high intensity supervision. he's been ordered to stay away from the white house and the capitol. >> we go to prince william county where officials are investigating threats of violence. it's happened twice this week at woodbridge high school. the first thread found inside the high school red 1/4/16-1/8/16, the school will be shot. police determined the threat was not credible. a second message was written on a wall threatening violence on a date next week. >> i work here also. so you know my daughter she's in here. but she didn't come today because she's really scared. >> we take any situation where there's a threat made against the school extremely seriously and we work very, very closely with police to investigate the situation and determine if there is any actual threat. >> prince william county officials say if they're able to figure out who's behind the messages, they intend to press charges. >> developing tonight, a philadelphia police officer shot 13 times survived and even helped catch the gunman. the shooting was captured on surveillance video. the gunman claims he did it for isis. we are hearing that officer's frantic call to to dispatch. sarah simmons joins us now. >> reporter: this is a surveillance video right here. this happened last night in philadelphia. you see the man dressed up in white. he walked right up to the car while firing his weapon. not long after you see right here the officer gets out of the car, runs after the suspect. here it is replaying again. it's just incredible video here. the officer managed to radio dispatch during all of this chaos. the police department released the recording of that frantic call. let's take a listen. scombl are. >> the officer was shot three times in the arm. despite the injuries he got out of his cruiser and returned fire hitting the suspect 30-year-old edward archer. officials said archer had pledged his allegiance to isis and used a stolen police firearm in this shooting. the city's mayor tried to tamp down fears saying the shooting had nothing to do with the suspect being a muslim. >> in no way, shape or form does anyone in this room believe that the islam or the teaching of islam has anything to do what you see on that screen. that is abhorrent, it's terrible, and it does not represent the religion in any way shape or form or any of its teachings. >> the officer suffered extensive injuries to his arm but was awake and alert before going into surgery. the suspect's condition is unknown at this time. investigators don't believe the shooting has any connection with isis at this time. >> incredible story. thank you. the world's most wanted drug lord is back in custody tonight. members of mexico's armed forces captured el chapo in his home state. authorities caught up with him this morning at a home. they say he was well protected. five of his body guards were killed in a gun battle. about six others were arrested. guzman was reportedly captured at a nearby hotel. he escaped from a maximum security prison last july and had been on the run until today. >> still to come, targeting unsuspecting homeowners. >> we're not talking about mass gunmen, we're talking about cleaning companies. what you can do to make sure you don't get ripped off. >> plus is your fit bit a fit fraud? details on the lawsuit filed against the makers of the fitness trackers and why you might want to double-check your reading. >> coming up at the bottom of the hour. it is the preview show. i'll be joined by mr. perkins, brody logan, grant paulsen as we take a look back at the redskins remarkable season and get you all amped up. we are back after this. >> it was all because of this video. the officer was convicted of holding a gun to william cunningham's head. cunningham and his cousin were inside of a parked car back in 2014. this cell phone video played during the trial showed the officer daring cunningham to resist. prosecutors say the officer accused the victim of parking illegally even though he had not. the victim was not hurt. >> a warning tonight to people in northern virginia who use online cleaning services. some companies are actually robbing residences. arlington county police say they've seen a recent spike in home barring larrys. they believe they may be to blame. part of the problem is people are letting cleaners into their homes without properly vetting them. >> these are online cleaning companies that people are scheduling these services with and what we're finding is that people are leaving their keys for them, not actually meeting the person that's doing the home cleaning and when they come home they're finding their home has been the subject of a theft. >> police have some tips for you. they say if you're going to use a home cleaning service, be home when workers arrive and stay until they leave. here are some other steps you can take. find out how long the company has been in business and get recommendations from friends and family. and check to see if the company has permits and licenses within the county or the state. >> a woman was hit and killed today as she crossed the straight in laurel maryland. she was rushed to the hospital where she later died. investigators say the driver stayed on the scene. police have not yet determined if the woman was in a crosswalk. >> it has been a damp day and a damp evening. the question is how long will this continue? >> we're going to have to deal with it for at least a good part of the weekend. but the good news is for the game we're going some see some improvement. in the meantime you're absolutely right. let's look outside. fog continues to build in and the drizzle is sticking around for the overnight hours and we're going to see more rainfall also. so just be prepared, keep the umbrella handy. nothing that's going to be steady tonight into the early part of tomorrow but that's going to change once we get into tomorrow night. here is a look at radar for you and you can see just some light showers just kind of spotty here and there. nothing that's heavy and steady but the drizzle and the clouds and showers on and off making it a pretty cool, dark, damp uncomfortable kind of night tonight. we do see some improvement in the temperatures where we're where we should be temperature-wise so we're not very cold. 44 at dc this hour, 42 at baltimore, we've got 42 at dlis as well. look at the cooler air here to the west. into the 30s. and that's where we're seeing a change with the precipitation moving in because they're seeing over the potomac highlands further to the west of this region here they're seeing some freezing rain and we could see a little bit of snow accumulating there into this weekend before it's all said and done. so as we take a look at what's going on, we've got a system that we're going to deal with that's going to end upbringing us a fair amount of weather as it moves in. as we start off tomorrow with a few showers here and this, we're going to see this increase and saturday night is the night we're going to see heaviest rainfall as the system moves through. as this low pressure system moves in, we have another ridge of high pressure to deal with we're going to see a tight pressure gradient. that translates into gusty winds especially on sunday. we're going to keep our fingers crossed it won't be too much of an impact in terms of the game. gray skies, plenty of rainfall. as you can see by the time we hit about the midday we'll be about 48 degrees, scattered showers once we hit the 5:00 hour, the heaviest rainfall will be overnight saturday night into your sunday. and then sunday we'll get some improvement for the game before it's all said and done. future cast here, it doesn't want to kick in for me. let me tell you. winds are going to be a factor as i mentioned. so by the time we have your tailgating, winds will be gusty and picking up to about 32 miles an hour by about 5:00 for the time the game kicks off. we'll have some showers for your tailgating and it's going to improve and we're going to end up dry conditions by kickoff 56 degrees. clouds and showers, patchy fog and for tomorrow we're talking 53 degrees for a high. here's your 7-day forecast. a very cold day on monday. temperatures take a big dip. shawn? >> thank you, gwen. >> one of the holiday's most popular gifts is coming under fire tonight. a class action lawsuit is accusing makers of the fit bit fitness tracker of defrauding customers. users allege fit bit heart rate monitoring technology is inaccurate. there's no word on the next steps for the case. the company issued a statement saying that the case has no merit and that it stands it's heart rate technology. >> let's talk powerball now. the jackpot is huge. it has grown to a record $800 million. but before you get all excited, your odds of winning, about 1 in 292 million. another way to look at that, you're more likely to give birth to kwa drup lets, be struck by lightning while you're drowning or become president of the united states than you are to win the power ball on saturday. it would be very interesting if you gave birth to kwa drup lets. >> just the whole fact that you would be having the babies. >> yes, i know. >> coming up next, a side of redskins star kirk cousins that you may not know about. find out why this dog and its owners have a special connection to the quarterback. that's coming up after the break. find your sweet spot today with dunkin's chicken apple sausage sandwich. enjoy sweet apple and savory sausage together for under 400 calories. america runs on dunkin'. >> very nice. wow, look at that. >> so the county down is on. we are less than 48 hours away from the big game. >> it's of course redskins-packers at fedex field sunday afternoon. muriel bowser and green bay mayor made a friendly bed. if wiz -- >> so we know that kirk cousins has plenty of skills when it comes to football. but did you know he's also pretty big into playing fetch? >> cousins an his wife are big animal lovers and despite their busy schedule, they've taken on a huge responsibility opening up their home to dogs whose lives may otherwise have been at risk. lauren demarco reports. >> reporter: millions will be watching sunday as kirk cousins leads the redskins in their playoff match-up against the packers. among tt adoring fans who will be tuning in, this little lady. she loves captain kirk not only for his heroics on the field, but also for the amazing work he and his wife do off the field. you see the cousins regularly foster dogs. animals whose lives would have been in jeopardy had they been left in shelters. gracie was with them the entire season until she was adopted. >> what was great about it is we get to tell all our friends about it. >> every redskins game dog says oh, your dad would be so proud of you. >> reporter: he often posts about his pets on social media and his wife sent us these photos saying gracie in particular was a very tough pup to part with. >> she had a lot of questions and they interviewed a few other people but she was quite happy with us. >> reporter: the kiss ins continued to open their home to several organizations including virginia-based friends of homeless animal. the president says to have someone as busy as the redskins starting quarterback demonstrate how easy fofrterring is sets a tremendous example for others. >> reporter: so you were kirk cousins best friend for months. bark if you think he may be a little nervous going into this game. all right. no bark. now, just sit here and stare and pant if you think he's prepared and he is going to lead the redskins to a win. that's a go. you like that? you like that? oh, you like that. oh, yeah. >> reporter: lauren demarco, fox 5 local news. >> we do like that. that was really cute. >> a leading question for the dog. >> a little bit there. if you are interesting in fostering we've put a link to the organization. >> coming up next we're devoting the next half hour to the redskins playoff push. stay tuned. this is fox 5's redskins playoff preview special. good to have you with us. i'm jim lokay and of course you know on sunday the packers head to fedex field for a battle with the nfc east champion redskins. we'll be joined by tony perkins, grant paulsen and brody logan. after going 7 and 25 over the prior two seasons, what a difference time makes. now they're getting ready to host their first home playoff game in three years. and in case you forget what happened, let's take a little trip down memory lane, shall we? the date was january 6, 2013. mike shanahan host the seattle seahawks, skins up 14-13. marshawn lynch and beast mode that puts the seahawks in front. they would go for two. they would get it and take a 21-14 lead. later the turf claiming rg3, his knee gives out, that's it. the quarterback would not recover. the skins fell 24-14. much more coming up, but weather is always a factor in everything we do, but playoff football especially. on that day back in 2013 it was 52 degrees. so the question is what can we expect on this sunday? caitlin roth standing by with the forecast for sunday. are you ready? you are ready. >> clearly. jim, you look so nice tonight but i had to do something to try to show you up with my outfit. >> we're trying our best dressing for the weather because it is actually going to be pretty chilly especially the second half of the game but it's going to start off totally different on sunday. we have been talking about rain all week long. the good news is the rain looks like it clears out way ahead of kickoff. but our temperatures will really be falling. temperatures around 55 but we are steadily into the 40s but you see our temperature there 42 degrees, the winds will be increasing. you will need more than just this, trust me it is going to be windy and very chilly by end. but that is all because of the winds which will be increasing behind the rain we get in the morning. tracking those game time winds we start off with wind chills right around the temperatures in the 50s. by the time we hit 4:00, by the way when i do start tailgating early, probably still some leftover showers however by the time we hit 4:00 we shouldn't see any of that. winds are increasing about 35 miles per hour. even though temperatures are in the 40s it's going to feel like it's in the 30s. so dress for warmth more than the rain as you head out on sunday morning. so the call for the forecast redskins game kickoff at 4:30 p.m. at fedex, tailgate forecast 62 degrees. so yes we are going to start off very mild an even on the west side but a big change by the end, by kickoff. breezy 66 degrees with a little bit of late day sunshine. we'll see temperatures fall into the 40s and it will be very windy. it's a totally different end to the day than the way we started. hopefully not affecting the game to much. the biggest factor is going to be the wind. i think it will clear out any of the rain so fast it probably shouldn't be too much of a problem on the grounds but wind could affect the game. that's a look at your forecast but what about your roads on sunday? we've got all your traffic covered for that. >> if you plan to head to the game, kickoff is at 4:40 and you don't want to be late. watch for a lot of congestion on the beltway especially near the stadium. exit 17, 16 and 15. also a lot of increased traffic on bright seat road and in addition to that congestion by the parking lots. metro is an option two stops near fedex field. you can take the blue and silver lines and the comfort of your own home sounds better make sure you tune to fox 5. we have redskins game time coverage starting at 2:00. that's your look at game time traffic. i'm erin como. >> professor paulsen is here. let's talk redskins football. gentlemen, welcome back to class because you're never prepared. i'll provide you with textbooks. we're going to talk about this redskins playoff run. i want to grade the season it just was. let's start on the offensive side of the football. my annual year-long grade for this offense is going to be the highest of our three grades. check it out. we are above a "c" average, this is a "b" grade. first of all you finished in tent yards per play. that guy right there kirk cousins is a big reason why. sixth in passing yards, seventh in sack rates. the turning point of the season was the insurgence of desean jackson opening things up for jordan reed who twice went for 120 yards on nine catches. "b" minus write that down. what i need you to know is defensively i've got the redskins in an up and down season with an average grade. i'm going to put them in that "c" area. i see a group that was probably better overall than the numbers would tell you. but let's delve into some of those numbers where they didn't rank very well. not enough of plays like this against the giants when the year really turned. pressure, sacks, last three games of the year the redskins had their highest three-game sack total of the entire campaign of 14. ryan kerrigan finished very strong with 9 and a half sacks. late in the year you see 94 preston smith rookie. had they pressure more earlier in the year that's probably a "b" grade, but look at the numbers here where they rank, the fact they're not in the top 10 of any category, i can't give them higher than a "c." >> how can you even grade them like this when they didn't have perfect attendance in the secondary. it seems like there was a new student every week. >> i'm a difficult grader. there's a hot tamale on rate my professor when this guy is in the classroom. >> i gave that grade. >> special teams was my toughest grade to give. earlier in the year it was an abject failure and cyst as ter. remember "saved by the bell"? this is "saved by the kicker and the punter." dust continue hopkins. this is one of a couple of blocked punts this season. this went for a score the redskins for the first time unofficially since 1812 had two kick returns for touchdowns as well. a 31-30 win against tampa bay. i'm going "c" plus because there were too many cat strask plays. >> you do look like mr. belding a little bit. >> i've been hearing that for many years. class no longer in session. >> matt jones with a 78-yard touchdown catch that was back in week 10. he gave the redskins a lead for good as they beat the saints 47-14. it was just one of the games that may have brought back the fans who gave up on the franchise and one of those fans tony perkins. i know it was not easy to do what you did last year when you decided, you said the words were you were done. >> that's right. i'm out. >> you're out. so what has changed? if you haven't seen tony has decided this is the right moment to say look, this is personal. >> i probably shouldn't have gone public with it frankly, but here's why i did. there are people who are very upset about this. i apologize to those people. if you want to read in detail for all of my reasons go to my facebook page, read yesterday's post, read tonight's post. here's the deal. i'm being honest here. i've been rooting for the redskins all season long. my son, i brought him up to be a redskins fan. he is a diehard. he's been to redskins training camp and all of that. i still do things with him and it's hard -- listen, i was a redskins fan for 45 years. it's in my blood. i was very frustrated last year, walked away from it, meant it when i did it. but there's some good things that have happened this year and jim, it's not about the wins. the wins are good. being in the playoffs are good. here's what has me excited about this team. this year, no drama. there's been no drama. how many times have you heard dan snyder's name this year? virtually none. that is a very good sign. has he perhaps stepped back and decide to let the front office. coaches run the team? maybe he has. it looks like it. the coach named kirk cousins the starting quarterback and said he's our guy. that eliminated the rg3 drama and that's been very distracting for the last two years. it's also i think been good for rg3 in that it's protected him, no injuries, and he'll be able to start over hopefully with another team. he certainly deserves that. >> he certainly does. i know this conversation has been very robust. you can talk to tony, he's been tweeting about it and facebooking. welcome back. i'm glad to be part of it with you. >> i'm glad you're here but i'm going to say no more. i'm very excited about this. another game got the fans believing again saw the redskins complete their biggest comeback in franchise history. week 7 at home against tampa bay. the skins put together their 1 scoring drive. the skins were down 24-7 at the half. washington finally found the end zone in the third quarter for the first time this season. cousins to ryan grant, skins were down 24-14. then we go to the ensuing kickoff. you don't see this a whole lot. the redskins won 31-30 and we all know what happened after the game. that moment when he let the immediate yoe know what he thought after the big win. >> you like that? you like that? >> we weren't sure whether or not it was a question or a statement. but nonetheless, redskins fans liked it because we've seen the shirts, we've seen the memes. this is one every our favorites. we're back after this. >> everybody know we winning and everything. this is a moment we've got to remember, videotape, record. the job not done yet. >> talk about one of the guys who has been a leader for this team here. ricky g. all the guys who were brought into this super bowl. they are leaders on the squad and the guys that don't have that type of experience i asked him what he is telling the younger players he just said get your popcorn. >> pierre thomas was magnificent, you go to the defensive side of the ball, you go to kerry williams. this is a team keerly that put their roster together thinking about games like this weekend. >> and doesn't it make sense that the success you've seen, you've seen this increased leadership on the field, in the locker room, some would say in some of the past years there's been a lack of discipline. this year they seem to have put that together. >> i think when you look at this team and you consider some of the other story lines this season in the nfl, look at the browns, this was a team they thought at some point maybe this is when we were going to see cleveland do something and all of the problems there we're not seeing those issues here as tony mentioned and that makes all the difference here. >> and pleefsly the redskins were the drama team. there was always something that would come up. and actually trent williams this past week said the culture of this team has changed by these additions. the feel in the locker room is different. these guys came in as free agents and they took up a leadership role with guys they didn't know. and they just took it up and ran with it. >> jordan reed, is anybody surprised at just the way he's come on so strong. >> not at all i was on the beat when he was drafted. mike shanahan told me at that time he was one of the most gifted players on the league. i've had multiple people tell me there are two guys on planet earth who can do what he can, one is jordan reed and the other is in jail for murder, aaron hernandez. >> he's a big guy. >> you can't cover him as a linebacker, you're not fast enough. what i love late this season though, the way he's handled contact. he's gotten tougher. this is a guy who was not durable enough, had issues staying healthy. he had some issues with fumbles earlier in his career. we have seen him take flight but the skills have always been there. >> i'm not surprised by his skill set because he's an amazing athlete. i will admit, i think some people are pleasantly surprised at how he and kirk cousins connect. this was a being question mark year going into this year. this was the year okay we're going to see what kirk cousins is, what he can do for the team and i think everyone has been very excited to see there are some connections there between him and some of his receivers. >> and desean jackson as well. they seem to have a great connection on the deep ball and the way they've been able to come together as well has been amazing and just the fact that you have continuity out there. have you the same quarterback every week, the same receivers, that seems to help and you can see the chemistry as the season has gone on. >> do you think something got into desean jackson's head. he was very adamant he wanted that ball he wasn't getting the ball. do you think he's come into his own a little bit d realized sit back and let captain kirk do his things. >> they want to get the ball no matter what. he's so special. you'll see it in practice. you'll see it out there. >> he got healthy. the first half of the season he wasn't on the field or he wasn't right. which you've seen late this season. this is the 77-yard catch and run. he provides something offensively taken off the lid that won no one one else on the team does. they've dialed up those plays before he gets healthy. >> we've got to talk about the green bay packers. there was a question about who would they play. do we like the fact that we're talking about the packers. >> i like that. >> i think they're getting the packers at the right time when there's a little bit of disarray and they have not been as effective as they traditionally have been. >> here's my one concern, aaron rogers outside the pocket. he just through for 3,800 yards. we're trying to pay kirk cousins $91 million because he did the same thing. aaron rogers didn't have a down year, his offense around him did. in the pocket you can have success. if he's extending place breaking the pocket see what jay cut letter did, you're going to see they're going to have real problems with him. >> this is going to be a robust discussion going into sunday. we want to give you a look at changes that were made to fedex field in anticipation of the playoff. >> do you think they remembered where that was? >> and we have two hours of pregame coverage redskins game time starting at 2:00 on sunday. back with more fox 5 redskins playoff special after the break. >> put to bed a lot of demons around here. some of the teams we beat would be over 500 if we didn't beat them. so you've got to look at it like that. but we just play who we're going to play on the schedule and we understand the importance of this football game and how good these teams are. if you make it to the playoffs no matter who you've betten, it's a hell of a feat in my opinion. >> you've got to think of the hurdles they overcame this year. they had the road win, the back-to-back wins, they have not beat a single team that finished over .500 at this point. this is going to be a feat in itself trying to beat a team with a winning record. >> but it's just like he said. they play who's on the schedule. there's nothing they can do about it. >> it's the next goal to achieve. >> we want to tell you about the other games on the schedule. playoffs get under way tomorrow afternoon as the chiefs head to houston to take on the texans tomorrow afternoon and the bengals will host the steelers and the vikings welcome the seahawks in a game that is predicted to be one of the coldest playoff games in nfl history. >> i love watching the playoffs when you see the breath of the players. they're talking about wind chills maybe -20 plus. have fun with that, seattle. >> let's talk predictions. mr. perkins your prediction for sunday. >> i've given this a lot of thought, i believe the redskins win 28-22. >> broidy? >> it was a blustery december day. the nfl championship 1936. history repeats itself. 21-6 but in reverse. the it's going to be hard to get on the scoreboard. >> i almost wish i went with a different team now. i've got washington 24-20. i think they make a big play down the field in a passing game vertically. they win a close game at home. >> weather is going to be a factor but i think they're going to get their run game in gear so my prediction it looks like we're looking at redskins 23 packers 20. grant and i are very close to that. >> brody has the packers kicking some field goals. >> i got my score from 1936. >> we will see you 2:00 with a special extended redskins game time joined by several special guests. you can join our playoff conversation on twitter using the #httr wow. the internet is crazy fast here. i know, right?
