the 184 lives lost at the pentagon on 9/11. fox 5s tom fitzgerald has more on today's emotional remembrance. ♪ >> reporter: a steady rain broke the silence as president obama placed a wreath at the pentagon 9/11 memorial friday. let us renew our resolve against those who perpetrated this barbaric act. >> reporter: the commander in chief used the occasion to note the terrorists continue to plot strikes inside america. >> the defense of our nation, we will never waiver. the pursuit of al qaeda and the extremist all is we will never falter. >> reporter: the president and michelle obama greeted family members who then entered the memorial. the pentagon memorial is made up of 184 benches, each bearing the name of a person who lost their life here on september th, 2001. names like brady howell of arlington, virginia,&his brother regan said time has stood still. >> it really doesn't seem like 8 years other than eight years of missing a brother and very good friend. >> reporter: names like jimmy holly of bowie, maryland, his wife martha said 9/11 shock has faded but not its grief. >> there are days i'm good and some days i just cry, you know. >> nmmerceci: and cecia d richards whose sister monica had no place to grieve until this memorial was built. >> it's good to have something to remember the victims by. >> reporter: future moven anniversaries -- future 9/11 anniversaries will come and go. the resolve to live lives for the loved ones who had theirs cut short gets stronger every year. >> that is what the memorial does. our family members, my brother dave will ver be forgotten. >> reporter: at the pentagon, tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. >> at ground zero in new york and in shanksville, pennsylvania, mourners remembered the loved ones they lost. laura evans has a look at those tributes. >> reporter: starting in new york. the family members and volunteers stood out in the rain reang out the names of everyone killed in the attacks there. >> christopher e. allenham. [ indiscernible ] >> our dear son, nicholas charles alexander rose. >> reporter: they also observed four moments of silence, the exact times the jet liners struck the north and south towers and the times each tower fell. vice president joe biden and bloomberg spoke to the mourners. >> just as our hearts return to those that we lost, we also remember all of those who spontaneously rushed forward to help however and whomever they could. their compassion and self-less acts are etched in our city's history. >> reporter: the crowd gathered at a recently-completed plaza next to ground zero. it's part of the memorial that will include two square pools, symbols of the footprints of the world trade center towers. >> todd m. beamer. there is no grand memorial to mark where 40 people died on 9/11 in shanksville, pennsylvania, but there was a ceremony in the field where flight 93 went down. mourners remember the passengers on that flight who died fighting the hijackers that took control of their flight from new york to san francisco. the former secretary of state collin powell mpcoared them to the citizens fire who have bled and died for the country over more than two centuries. >> they were to become worthy successes to the heros of conco and lexington and bunker hill. they would be minutemen and women. they had a moment, which, against all odds, was theirs to seize. >> reporter: 8 years later, there is only a temporary memorial in shanksville. work on a formal memorial is scheduled to begin in mid- october. president obama's declared september 11th a national day of service. the president and first lady set an example with a stop in northeast d.c. the first couple toured three habitat for humanity homes and pitched in to help paint. volunteers from serve d.c. did their part as the veterans affairs medical center in northwest. they helped spruce up the outdoor area by adding flowers to planters and visited some of the patients thanks the veterans for their service to our country. agriculture secretary tom vilsack marked the day of service. he delivered fresh produce from the people's gardens. he rolled up his sleeves helping staff prep meals. the quiet remembrances of 9/11 broken up by a moment of pan oath potomac. starting with the coast guard drill, then someone overheard a radio transmission. the next think this you know, a security alert plaered on national cable news networks. it was a misunderstanding. claudia coffey has more to on this one to sort it out for you. -- us. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the boats are here for what is being described as a low- profile training mission. that mission created a lot of confusion and even fears. the coast guard said it led to the grounding of several flights for about 20 minutes at reagan national airport. while the coast guard is investigating, officials are not apologizing. e coast guard boats circling near the pentagon this morning. the scene caused quite a stir. following a cable news report that shots were fired and helicopters were seen lodging overhead. but this, according to the coast guard, was a nis communication. >> this is a low profile, normal training exercise that goes on every day as we train our people to handle the boats and the security protowillco. there is no reason for specific agency notification on an exercise that is this low profile. it's a routine everyday exercise. >> reporter: this exercise happened to take place on the anniversary of september 11th. not far from a memorial service attended by president obama. one of the coast guard's top commanders said thatsomeone overheard the radio communications and misunderstood what was going on. and that led to media reports of gun fire on the potoc. during that exercise, they were discussing their tactics, their training as they normally do on channel 81, which is a marine productiony. a discrete coast guard channel that was apparently intercepted by a member of the public. their discussions were taken out of context. >> reporter: according to the coast guard, no shots were fired anno weapons were loaded. >> part of the protocol in their training is verbalization of gun fire and orders between the boats simulating what we would normally do if we were intercepts a suspect vessel. that bang bang was verbalized on the radio. >> and the coast guard said that during the training missions, they don't usually notify and specifically, they don't notify federal, state and local officials as to why and the big question so many people are asking, why in the world would you have a training mission like this on september 11th not far from the memorial service of the pentagon. the coast guard simply responded that it's investigating. live along the potomac, claudia coffey, giving outrageous advice. we're back in two. co >> giving you the news edge on d.c. new developments in a high- profile murder. fox 5 has learned a d.c. police detective who apparently committed suicide last night was being questioned in connection to the murder in northwest. paul wagner has more on the news edge. paul, what do you know? >> reporter: brian, this is what we have learned at this hour. the 5thistrict detective terrence green had his police powers revoked a weeing on after shanik robert keaneinson told police she had a relationship with the detective. robinson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of buden rana, the co-owner of the pizza mart in northeast found beaten and stabbed inside the store last month. according to a court affidavit filed at the time, rana was paying robinson to marry his brother but cut off the payment when is he found out robinson was seeing other men. law enforcement forces said detective green was being questioned about his relationship with robinson and whether he may have helped her after the murders. we know that detective green was found hanged inside his parent's house in capitol heights last night. he has a young son and a wife on the police force. she's assigned to the third district and is a sworn officer. again, we're learning that this is all unraveling here and we should have more later on tonight. by don't know if he was officially facing charges or thought charges were coming down the pike here >> sources are telling us he was being questioned in relation to his relationship with miss robinson and whether or not he may have helped her after the murder. his police powers and gun and badge were taken away a week ago. the dayof d.c. police's all hands on deck. the police all hands on deck might be over. the d.c. chief has been ordered to rescind the crime-fighting initiative. the fraternal order of police complained and an arbitor agreed that they changed days off and tours of duty in violation of the collective bargaining agreement and d.c. law. also, they want members to get paid for having their scheduling rights violated during each of the all hands on deck this year. chief lanier issued a statement saying she disagrees with the ruling and the department is appealing the decision. caught on cama -- camera, the group behind last year's voter fraud scandal mosque in london, england. the violence sparked by an antimuslim protest. the demonstrators were part of a group lled stop islamification of europe. the leaders cancelled the protest but some members showed up anyway and counterdemonstrators defending the mosque began fighting with police. the second time anti-muslim feelings have led to street violence in england. a different display here at home. disens of muslim men and women are gathering outside of the white house for an interfaith vigil to remember the victims of september 11th. matt ackland is live this morning. >> reporter: this year, muslims wanted to come together to remember those who died on september 11th. this is the first time they have gathered out in front of the white house and they're expecting one to 200 people. i'm going to get out of the way for to you look at lafayette square. that is where it's taking place. the service is expected to get underway at any moment. it's called light the night for peace and friendship. we're told that there will be opening remarks followed by a ramadan fast on-breaking meal at sundown and candles lighted to honor the victims of september 11th. one organizer told me following the attacks many muslims were grouped in with the terrorists. this service is to express that most muslims are good and caring people. >> you're right, we took a lot of heat even though 99.9% of the muslims all around the world are peaceful, hospitable, warm, friendly people. but osama bin laden got so much attention and people likhim -- they don't care. that is the way it s. the negativity goes long ways. >> reporter: back out live in front of the white house. you can see some of the people getting ready. they're actually taking some meals and water down there by the white house. that fast breaking will take place around sundown and then there will be a handle lit -- candlelight vigil after that and the service should last about an hour to two hours and they expecting, brian, 100 to 200 people. back to you. >> matt ackland, live in lafayette park. more trouble for the community organizing group called a corn. workers are coming under fire. under video surfaced showing a man and woman posing as a pimp and prostitute to ask for help to get a loop to open a brothel. this this was shot in july in a.c.o.r.n.'s d.c. office. the workers explaining to the pair how they can hide the woman's professed work to get a loop. she needs to start -- [ indiscernible ] in her name. >> uh. >> and business. >> uh-huh. >> not the lady of the night thing but a name of a company. >> a similar video shot in a.c.o.r.n.'s baltimore office was released yesterday. a.c.o.r.n. saying the same thing. this is the attempt chording to them and they want to see the full video >> yeah. >> it's -- we may not be done either. going give you a look outside. the clouds hanging tough and a tale of two seasons, depending on where you live. it was sunny and 80 degrees today, didn't get much rain if any or you got a lot and the clouds are hanging tough and it's still raining. you can see how low the clouds are to the horizon and let me take to you max hd radar. across maryland, this is as we expected, raining lightly around maryland. drizzle and mist and occasionally steadier stuff that you can measure and this will gradually wind down as we go through the night and over to max hd satellite and radar. it maxed out with winds of 60 miles an hour off the jersey and delaware coast here and tremendous heavy rain. all that rain into pennsylvania and you can see where there was a very sharp back edge. we're seeing a lot of sunshine through central and southwestern virginia where you got very little rain at all. by the way, speaking of that rain, check this out. reagan national got under an inch of rain and dulles only on .2 of an inch of rain. bwi marshal an inch and a half and we have a product here that can estimate how much rain has fallen. the max hd radar can do that and you can see there was nothing basically from fredericksburg to culpeper, charlottesville or richmond. it was sunny there, gorgeous. that was the placeto be and you get to the eastern shore and we found 6- and 8-inch radar estimated totals, although we're getting ground from this, too. through southern maryland, up to three inches, bel-air marynd, three inches. on the del mask a three to six inches of rain from this. quite an impressive storm and we are going continue to feel a bit of the influence over the weekend and by and large, it's much weakened. this is what imon by saying we may get a bit of a taste of it. during the day saturday, there will be clouds around, maybe a late-day shower and that will be a piece of energy the upper- level energy coming behind the storm system and out there. kind of opening up. hey, hang in there fosunday. sunday looks great. 82 degrees and we think the sunshine will return and as the sunshine returns, the temperatures will respond as l. check it out, though, fredericksburg, 73; d.c., 66; baltimore, 61 and all of these oranges, that is worse than the upper 70s and low 80s at this hour. quite a contrast across the region. cloudy and cool for us in d.c., a few hingerring -- lingering showers. the showers, again, occurring through maryland and to the south. we're not seeing anything anymore. limited sunshine for our saturday. you could see one or two isolated showers in the afternoon. 75 degrees and max hd future cast, a good job of showing us where the rain was going to be. friday at 6:00, pushing's few clouds around saturday morning and dealing with a few and you can see sunday, one or two showers here and there and that is saturday. things are going be improving on sunday. up to 82 degrees previewed in the weekend forecast and just get ready for a nice run monday, tuesday and wednesday and it looks like we're going to have a lot of smooth sailing. brian, we're halfway through the tropical season and our
