manassas, down to warrenton and culpeper. now we have a lot of new flash flood warnings. i think that's probably the greater concern. these waters are going to continue to rise after the storms and these heavy downpours move out of the area. let me show you on sentinel radar where these warnings are. they go from the roanoke area all the way up to baltimore and in closer on up the number of warnings you see north of 66, that includes most of the metro area and goes until about 4:30 in the morning. we've been able to take that tornado watch down that was canceled. it will remain in effect down to our south because some of these heavier downpours may still be able to drop some big winds and maybe a little rotation. this is also an area to keep an eye on, culpeper to gainesville, a lot of heavy rain coming up through that region. this is all part of a massive system that's left a huge footprint across the country. gary mcgrady is standing by with the action we saw especially down to our southerlyier. >> absolutely. these storms -- south earlier. >> absolutely. these storms have been cutting a line across the entire countr. unfortunately it's been a deadly -- country. unfortunately it's been a deadly line, too. we want to start with what we've had to deal with this evening, all this torrential rain. it hit the area earlier this afternoon and swept through in waves this evening. sometimes it's been light, other times very, very heavy. we're still under several flash flood warnings tonight. that does include d.c. powerful storms also ripped through many states down to the southeast before they came up our way. fortunately for us no tornadoes, but this tornado touched down in north georgia. officials say it was on the ground at least a couple miles damaging buildings, flipping cars. fire officials have found at least one body in this storm damage. tennessee was hit hard, too. memphis in some places had as much as 4 inches of rain today, winds heavy enough to knock over the trees. 47-year-old man was killed in nashville. he was taking shelter in a shed, but then a tree fell on it. tennessee has been declared a state of emergency. the problems continue from there. high winds ripped the roof right off a wal-mart distribution center in texas and tens of thousands of people are without power tonight in arkansas. >> stay with fox 5 for continuing coverage. remember you can track the forecast 24/7 with the fox 5 weather app. download it on your droid, iphone or ipad. it was wild chaos tonight on metro when power was cut to two green line trains stranding hundreds of passengers between the navy yard and anacostia stations during the evening rush. some of them took matters into their own hands and walked out through the tunnel. fox 5's karen gray houston live outside the anacostia station with the latest. >> reporter: some of those passengers just panicked when they were forced to sit in hot dark trains for more than half an hour. they say a conductor went over the pa system and told them there was a fire on the tracks. well, it turns out there was only smoke, but still fire trucks raced to scene at anacostia and at the navy yard stations. metro says the smoke was due to an arcing insulator problem which can be relatively routine, but an emergency responder may have hit controls that accidentally zapped electricity to two green line trains that were stopped in the tunnel. one passenger eventually hit the emergency exit button and discovered it was only a short walk through the tunnel to get out at the anacostia station. so a lot of passengers just followed him out. metro stopped rail service between navy yard and southern avenue and provided shuttle bus service, but passengers complained that there wasn't enough. there weren't enough buses and that they were also angry at being stranded so long underground. >> the power just went out and then we were just sitting under the train maybe 30 minutes or so. it was getting pretty hot. we had an emergency situation where a lady was -- i don't know if she was diabetic, but what happened, she had shortness of breath and me and another guy pulled her over to the backdoor and opened the backdoor so the lady could breathe. >> self-evacuation meaning you take it upon yourself to leave the train is something you should only do if your life is threatened. if there are other options, moving to another railcar is a better option. when you leave the train, that third rail will kill you even if you don't make contact with it. even if you just come near it, it can kill you. >> reporter: metro is stressing again there was no fire. there was only smoke in the tunnel, but they are scheduling a debriefing session for tomorrow inviting members of the fire department so that they can try to prevent anything like this from happening again. spokesman dan stessel tonight is saying metro apologizes profusely for any inconvenience. back into you, brian. developing this evening a man still holding a 6-year-old child hostage in alabama. it's been more than 24 hours since the man allegedly boarded the child's school bus and killed the driver. now the two are holed up in a bunker. fox's elizabeth prawn has the latest from midland city. >> reporter: a -- city. -- city. officers say the little boy is safe. >> i can assure you we continue to communicate with the suspect. at this time we have no reason to believe that the child has been harmed. >> reporter: the standoff began after the man shot and killed a school bus driver and kidnapped the child in midland city, alabama tuesday afternoon. authorities aren't releasing the suspect's name, but neighbors identifying him as jimmy lee dikes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver. some neighbors say he once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe and patrolled his yard at night with a shotgun. dikes was scheduled to appear in court this morning to answer charges he shot at neighbors in a dispute over a speed bump last month. >> i always called him mean man. i tried to get several of the neighbors that -- one who has since moved away, i tried to get them to take action with me, but they didn't want to get involved. >> reporter: the neighbor also says the man knew the school bus driver. the victim reportedly dropped off some food for the suspect monday as a thank you for some repair work. it is not clear if dikes made any demands from his bunker to authorities. in midland city, alabama, elizabeth prann, fox news. a chicago teen-ager was shot to death near her school yesterday afternoon in a park on the city's south side. hadiya pendleton was with a group of friends standing under an awning to get out of the rain when a gunman shot at the group and pendleton got hit in the back. >> i just miss her. my heart, there's a whole section of my heart that's gone. >> they took the light of my life. this guy, whoever it was, the gunman or whatever, i mean man, you took the light of my life. >> pendleton was a majorette and performed with her school's band at the president's inauguration parade. tonight chicago police are still searching for the gunman. the edge on d.c. now where more and more people are choosing bicycles as their way to get around and when bikes and cars try to co-exist on the roads, there can be problems. d.c. police cracking down on one of the most traveled avenues in the district. fox 5's matt ackland has the story. >> reporter: as this youtube clip from a helmet camera shows you, a bad accident can happen in a flash. a close call here and another along pennsylvania avenue for russ monn just this morning. the problem? drivers making u turns crossing over bike lanes. >> i was literally right beside his door and i had to slap on his door to stop him from making the turn. >> reporter: in an effort to cut down on accidents, mayor vincent gray issued an emergency order making u-turns across bicycle lanes illegal. d.c. police spent this wednesday morning stopping drivers handing out flyers reminding them of the rule. >> we want to make sure everybody knows the rule. right now we're really fcation. >> reporter: the law has been in place several months now. the signs are up here along pennsylvania avenue and warnings have been issued. tomorrow, though, those warnings turn into tickets. cab drivers seem to be blamed the most for making these u- turns across bike lanes. >> it's a lack of knowledge and i think there's the fact that they're in their taxi there's a money agenda that got to get the next fare, the person standing on the other side of the road. >> reporter: fare or not starting tomorrow crossing the bike lane will get you a $100 ticket. in the district matt ackland, fox 5 news. still ahead a super bowl to go before we get out of the rain and the muck. >> a few more hours. there's been kind of a corridor of heavy rain just west of the city. some of these areas will get hit again, so a lot of flash flood warnings flying till 4:30 in the morning. even after the rain stops water will still rise. we've still got light to moderate rain here in the d.c. area. it's lighter east of the city and definitely heavier to the west. 1 thing we have not seen a lot of tonight is damage wind gusts, but those very strong winds were aloft. we have been concerned there would be some opportunity for them to be transferred to the ground. so a wind advisory is still in effect for our area. we've got to start with the heavy rain. again east of the city it's lighter but still significant, but then we've got bands of moderate to heavy rain just west of the city. it's out around the warrenton area and let me put it in motion. clarkbsurg has had a lot of heavy rain, a lot of problems with roads in loudoun county and even northern montgomery county. i'm sure quo year has had issues tonight because -- fauquier has had a lot of issues tonight because you are an area that's had repeat heavy rain. we have not seen any lightning bolts. if thunderstorms had developed, they may have been able to tap some of those strong winds that condition a loft. tomorrow night into friday we'll get another round of pretty significant colder air. i'll show you some of the rain totals from the last few hours, heaviest rain in loudoun county and montgomery county, although western fairfax is closing in on some of that heavy rain, in the leesburg area we think maybe as much as 2 1/2 inches of rain has fallen. just south of 662 1/2 inches, a couple -- 66 2 1/2 inches, a couple isolated spots in prince william finding up to 4 inches. in the district about .7-inch and up toward howard county 2 inches. so you can see why if we get another round of rain that produces an inch or 2, we'll have problems. all these green areas are flash flood warnings. that means flooding is occurring. that does include the district and baltimore and in this region those warnings which kind of parallel interstate 95 go until 4 a.m. the advisories are starting to drop to our south, but this is a wind advisory still in effect for our area. it doesn't look like the winds will be as damages as we thought. you could still pick up a gust up to 45 miles an hour. that's enough to loosen a few limbs and blow stuff around on the roads. we have a tornado watch scaled back in a big way. they're still tracking a few counties. a watch means we have a little potential. that's still in effect for charles, calvert, st. mary's county and over to spotsylvania. it does not include the northern neck but it does include some areas to our south. it is out of here by morning rush hour? yes. at 2 a.m. still have some heavy rain. at 5 a.m. it might still be raining on the eastern shore. the snow starts up again in the mountains, but most of the rest of our thursday will be dry. we'll watch friday morning to see if we have a band of snow setting up somewhere as colder air continues to race into the region. 47
