May have some winds that could gust to 60 so im always happens but it will also have some very heavy rain in it. The storm were seeing here in Montgomery County not severe but i did notice that there was some pea sized hail reported with that as it crossed the germantown area. So, as we put this in motion in the last couple of hours, weve had just a little piece of energy that has developed over us and you know what, it will bring you a lot of cooling relief. In te terms of temperatures we did not hit 90 at rig. In the wind was out of the south. Dulles and bwi though at 90 and 92 degrees. Now to a tragedy in the district. So far no charges have been filed against a driver who struck and killed a sixyearold boy in southeast. Xavier lucky was attempting to cross livingston road when he was hit last night. Fox5 has learned it was the little boys birthday. Police say the drive initially left the scene but returned after calling 911. Fox5s paul wagner joins us live from the scene tonight with more. Paul, this is simply heartbreaking. Reporter oh its just horrible here, tony. Theres a growing memorial here just over my shoulder down here by this tree. Theres going to be a vigil here at 7 oclock tonight. The little boy was just adorable. He went to henle Elementary School where he was in that kindergarten. This is around 8 30 last night is what we understand, he was trying to cross livingston road here. He will lives in one of these apartments here along ulivingston road. Lets show you some video that we shot last night. This section of livingston road where xavier lucky lost his life curves to the right for northbound traffic and runs along a stretch of three story apartment buildings. Police say xavier was attempting to cross the road when the unnamed driver struck him and kept on going. It was just after 8 30 in the twilight hours. There are no speed bumps there are no crosswalks that would assist pedestrians wanting to get to the park and playground across the street. Xavier lucky was in kindergarten at henle elementary as i mentioned where according to a letter sent home to parents, he was remembered as a sensitive boy who had many friends at school. His teachers appreciated the effort he placed upon his schoolwork and his cooperative nature in working with others. Shannon smith was down the street when she heard the collision. I heard a boom. And then i heard a holler. Somebody hollered said you hit that child, you hit that child. I dont even know at that time because he was in a truck and xavier so small i dont think he really knew he hit him and thats how i think he continued until he realized what really happened. We been complaning about this for a long time. Marion berry did have a crosswalk when he was mayor. There was one there and one at the beginning and there was also one at the corner but time went on, you see they keep constantly messing with the streets, so no one never came back and investigated why there isnt a crosswalk and it should be one. Reporter and the crosswalk of course would take people across to oxon hill mark and also to that the playground across the street you were just seeing a picture of the memorial thats growing here and again, were going to have a vigil here at 7 oclock tonight for little xavier. Its unclear exactly why he was crossing the street, whether he was trying to get to some friends over there or whether he was trying to get to the playground. Questions about the driver. We know he left the scene initially. Were told he called 911 and then came back to the scene. Its pretty common for Police Departments not to charge people immediately in these accidents, they want to conduct a full investigation first before they level any charges, if any at all. Stay with us. Ralph northam being a pediatrician has taught me to listen carefully. Im ralph northam, and when survivors of the Virginia Tech shooting and close the gun show loophole, i took on the fight. I saw what those weapons can do as an army doctor during the gulf war. D. C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes norton sent a letter to the secretary of state asking any turkish official that took part in the fight be banned from reentering the u. S. Know charges filed against the driver who hit and killed this sixyearold boy in southeast. Xavier lucky was trying to cross livingston road when the car hit him last night. They learned yesterday was his sixth birthday. Talk about a close call. Three metro nearly hit by a metro train. It happened along the yellow line near the eisenhower avenue station. Fortunately none of them were hurt. In just a few minutes the Fairfax County school board will meet to decide whether to rename jeb Stewart High School in falls church. In 2015, jeb Stewart High School entered the National Spotlight when students petitioned to change the name from that of the confederate general to Thurgood Marshall high school to honor the Supreme Court justice and social rights activist. Tisha lewis has more. Reporter well, tony were about 10 minutes away from this Community Meeting here at jeb Stewart High School kicking off. You can see the auditorium is filling up. Weve had that people on both sides of the issue approach us since we arrived. What i can tell you is that tonight it will just be discussions on all sides about a potential name change. Organizers tell me that they do not anticipate a decision being panels still have to be can um to fruition before that happens but tonights meeting will include presenttations both for and against the renaming of the school. Were told there will be an opportunity for community input. Again, all of this comes after a push by a small group of stuart students who asked school and Community Leaders to remove the name of the famed confederate general from the school. Their effort then picked up steam and gained National Attention from famous prominent including actress julian moore who started an online petition saying the schools name represents a history of racism. The petition wants Jeb Stuart High School renamed to Thurgood Marshall high school in honor of the Supreme Court justice and civil rights advocate. Back in history he was a he was a confederate soldier so we, we dont align with those views any in virginia, or at least in this district and were one of the mt diverse schools in cps so, we do not believe in any of the views he had or any of the things he upholds. Its a part of American History but people need to understand history. You cant eradicate history. Reporter and there are reports that the cost to change the name here could be upwards of a Million Dollars to change the name and the logo on Everything Associated with it. Critics of the name change say that that money could be better spent on education and other resources and programs needed for the school. Tisha lewis fox5 local news. Aall right, well we certainly start to see some storms popping up. It was hot today. Is this part of all part of that and real feel of summer today with the humidity up and so weve got a little bit of energy for these storms to feed on and we have a couple of severe this morning warnings. Big concern i think is hail and heavy rain with them. Not fun to be driving in this today, shawn and tony, plenty of moisture available to rain on you. What you will also find is its quite dramatic cooling as these go on by and so you know were looking at the capitol youd never know there was anything going on but most of these have been tracking a little bit north and west of the city, so far we havent had much come into the district at this point but we may have to deal with this for a little bit longer as we still have plenty of prime heating around. Were going to start with our most recent warnings which are all down here to the west and these Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are for Clark Jefferson loudoun and Washington County in maryland. You can see we have a lot of action there. Clark oh now we have a new one for Fauquier Frederick and warren so a couple of new warnings to tell you about and you can see we have quite a parade of activity with a lot of lightning and some possibility of hail with these. We did get reports of hail in a severe storm up in Carroll County. We had some pea sized hail in Montgomery County and there might have be a of hail here east of charlestown as weve been watching these go by. The movement is generally east. The threat is the heavy rain but in a Severe Thunderstorm Warning you can also get a wind that could gust to 60 miles an hour so trees are a concern. Hail and lightning as well. So, these are again going to be tracking off to the east. Well put a little fan on here and you can see some of the tracks. Some of these names you probably never heard of. Thats whats going on. The storm were tracking up through Montgomery County that has weakened as its approaching the columbia area. A straggler toward the damascus area but thats just dropping rain, nothing too severe with that one and we had been tracking a stronger storm up toward Carroll County but it looks like that storm is wearing itself out. Kind of a busy night around here with a lot of lightning and we are certainly aware that many of you may have plans for this evening. Were going to have to wait for these storms to pass on by. Thats the storm that weve been tracking pushing on up into no longer really severe for carroll. Everything in motion and you can see that not only is this moving due east but still a little bit more developing out here along interstate 81 and that is also going to likely track in the direction of some of our western suburbs. So, well watch that for you as we go through the night. Temperatures right now where youve had a storm youve cooled off, like winchester 72, frederick bouncing back from 79 degrees. Bottom line, another hot day tomorrow. We could see more storms tomorrow afternoon. Lets take you to that sevenday forecast and youll be able to see that after we get through our 91degree day tomorrow, big cooloff coming for the weekend. Saturday much cooler at 74. Sunday cooler, maybe some storms around on monday and well rebounds next week but no more heat wave after we get through tomorrow. Dont go anywhere. Well be right back. Tom went to washington to take on the Insurance Companies and the Credit Card Companies and the wall street banks. Thats what Tom Perriello is about. Progressive causes have been my lifes work. Im Tom Perriello. And before and after congress i led nonprofits to battle climate change, poverty and president bushs attacks on civil rights. Now im running for governor to reduce economic inequality. Because together, we really can build a virginia that works for everyone. A brewery did i say that right. Yes. That word is hard for me. In ukraine has created a beer that pokes trump at President Trump. The beer is called trump the president of the divided states of america. The owner describes it as a mexican style lager served with a lime on the label you can spot russian president Vladimir Putin and a wall between the u. S. And mexico. The brewery has created beers in the past for german chancellor Angela Merkel and former president barack obama. In the ukraine. Ukraine, right. I have a feeling the president is not going to enjoy that one. For starters he doesnt drink anyway. Well talk more about the president coming up on 5 at 6 30. Another twist in the white house russia probe. President trump today spoke out about the Justice Department naming a special counsel to investigate possible ties between his campaign and russia.
