children. but we begin with winter weather, what a mess in the midwest, heavy snow, ice, thunderstorms pounding several states. in many areas they saw a foot of snow already on the ground. part of that storm system is marching our way. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm brian bolter. >> i'm shawn yancy. fortunately here we're not expecting heavy snowfall, but that storm could still cause some problems tomorrow morning. sue palka is in the weather center now. >> there might be a little spotty prescription around in the morning. i think that would be in the form of snow and sleet. the better chance might be for the evening commute. i want to emphasize anything we get will be light, but when it comes to sleet, light can cause some problems. that's why we'll highlight this. by the time this thing is done, it will have affected half of the country or portions of 24 or 25 states, but what you see here, all the heavy snow and precipitation in the form of thunderstorms down to the south is beginning to split into two separate areas and when this starts coming in our way tomorrow, we are going to be in that split. so what we'll be getting is fairly light. that's why i'm not thinking we'll have big issues in the morning but a little snow and sleet could be around. here's how things will play out. they've got some winter weather advisories up for the mountains. this is where you might get a small accumulation of snow and sleet. that could begin earlier. those advisories kick in tonight through friday, no advisories for the metro area and that first storm that's producing all the snow will be weakening, but there will be more rain coming in our direction and with cold temperatures at the surface and several layers around we could get that light mix of snow and sleet. so here are the headlines very quickly for friday's messy mix. yes, it will be very light. it might affect us in the morning a little bit, but i think the better chance is in the afternoon with periods of light snow or sleet. well north and west there could be freezing rain in the mix. evening commute could be affected, but we think by the time we get after 6:00 or so this should become all rain. sleet or the little ice pellets that tick when they hit your window and that again on road surfaces it could be close to the freezing mark, may make it slick in some areas. for most of us i think temperatures will get above the 32-degree mark. the middle of the country is buried under more than a foot of snow tonight. in some places as much as a foot and a half fell. the snow stepped from colorado to illinois and the snow brought sleet, freezing rain. airports of state capitols have been shut down and two deadly car crashes have been blamed on the storm. now another big story, he say. >> pastor ronald jones took a class with greg holley at the new life anointed ministry church in woodbridge last night. minutes after it ended holley was dead. >> we left the class probably about 8:30, quarter to 9:00 and said he was going to go walk the dog, go home, do the homework that we had got assigned and i got word. >> word that greg holley, a retired atf agent and army reserve officer, a father with four boys, had been gunned down during a robbery steps from his home. >> what a tremendous loss. i mean the family is, of course, his wife is grieving. the boys just hurt because he was such a great man, such a great man. what a loss. >> an off-duty prince william county police officer spotted a man running from the scene after holley was shot. 25-year-old aric alexander smith was taken into custody after a brief struggle. he had a stolen gun on him and some of holley's personal belongings. >> i basically think it's a sign of the times which should make all >> two of moll live's boys made it home from college -- holley's boys made it home from college to be with their mom. the family says loved ones know what to prepare for but never expect to have to investigators believe this was an accident. >> there were no working smoke detectors inside the home and had there been, investigators believe it would have given the family a little extra time to perhaps make it out alive. it was the worst kind of fire call, kids trapped inside. volunteer firefighters rushed to the home on leslie avenue in glenarden where they found a 33- year-old mother and her 8-year- old daughter outside on the front lawn. the two had managed to escape the inferno through a window and were suffering from smoke inhalation, but trapped inside were the father and three needed. the fire officials have still not released the names of the three people killed in the fire. one of the girls lost her twin sister and again an 11-year-old is in grave condition. for now slightly. it could be potentially a nonevent here because there's a split, but if there's even smallamount of sleet, sleet can make things dicey. there could be some precipitation around and it could take the form of a little sleet or snow or freezing rain if you live far enough north. we'll start with a look at the big storm everybody is talking about. you know that this moisture here is getting ready to split into two pieces if you were watching at the beginning and this snow portion will weaken. this will transition into a coastal storm that will potentially bring new england more storm. while it's splitting it will come across d.c. that's why we won't get a whole lot out of. this we'll probably get a little rain -- out of this. we'll probably get a little rain on saturday. there's an area of high pressure that will keep this at bay a little bit longer, so most of you will be dry for the morning. you'll have some clouds out there, but i really think any precipitation we get in the morning would be spotty. by the way, we do have some advisories to our west. this is actually for a combination of snow and sleet, but also freezing rain. so late tonight and during the day friday there's a possibility of a small buildup of ice in these purple areas, but nothing has been issued for the d.c. area. at the surface this is what the setup will be tomorrow. there's going to be rain to our south and we'll eventually see this change to rain everywhere else. the pink zone is a small area of a combination of snow and sleet, outside chance for freezing rain, best chances likely in the mountain or perhaps well to the north along the mason-dixon line. that area of low pressure this becomes the coastal storm will head up to new england. it throws some rain showers back at us on saturday, heaviest rain to the east as this thing continues up the coast. it may hit places like boston. they may end up having one of their snowiest februaries in a long time. in terms of any accumulation here, it's only a slight chance. we would say a combination of snow and sleet might produce a light accumulation, but it's only a chance. i think a better chance might be out to our west. we want you to have a heads up because when it comes to sleet, it doesn't take much to create some slippery spots that. would mainly be a concern for the evening commute on friday. let's take this forward in time and it's showing us very little in this area. a lot of times the lightest stuff doesn't really project itself onto the futurecast, but you can see why along interstate 80 one will have to watch for a bit of snow or sleet or freezing rain. at 5:00 there's a little rain to our south, patches of snow to our north. some of you might not see anything, but again sometimes these things can change a little bit and we're awfully close to moisture. by midnight rain and a little patch of snow hanging around to our north and rain saturday. watch for how the snow begins for new england and children. but we begin with winter weather, what a mess in the midwest, heavy snow, ice, thunderstorms pounding several states. in many areas they saw a foot of snow already on the ground. part of that storm system is marching our way. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm brian bolter. >> i'm shawn yancy. fortunately here we're not expecting heavy snowfall, but that storm could still cause some problems tomorrow morning. sue palka is in the weather center now. >> there might be a little spotty prescription around in the morning. i think that would be in the form of snow and sleet. the better chance might be for the evening commute. i want to emphasize anything we get will be light, but when it comes to sleet, light can cause some problems. that's why we'll highlight this. by the time this thing is done, it will have affected half of the country or portions of 24 or 25 states, but what you see here, all the heavy snow and precipitation in the form of thunderstorms down to the south is beginning to split into two separate areas and when this starts coming in our way tomorrow, we are going to be in that split. so what we'll be getting is fairly light. that's why i'm not thinking we'll have big issues in the morning but a little snow and sleet could be around. here's how things will play out. they've got some winter weather advisories up for the mountains. this is where you might get a small accumulation of snow and sleet. that could begin earlier. those advisories kick in tonight through friday, no advisories for the metro area and that first storm that's producing all the snow will be weakening, but there will be more rain coming in our direction and with cold temperatures at the surface and several layers around we could get that light mix of snow and sleet. so here are the headlines very quickly for friday's messy mix. yes, it will be very light. it might affect us in the morning a little bit, but i think the better chance is in the afternoon with periods of light snow or sleet. well north and west there could be freezing rain in the mix. evening commute could be affected, but we think by the time we get after 6:00 or so this should become all rain. sleet or the little ice pellets that tick when they hit your window and that again on road surfaces it could be close to the freezing mark, may make it slick in some areas. for most of us i think temperatures will get above the 32-degree mark. the middle of the country is buried under more than a foot of snow tonight. in some places as much as a foot and a half fell. the snow stepped from colorado to illinois and the snow brought sleet, freezing rain. airports of state capitols have been shut down and two deadly car crashes have been blamed on the storm. now another big story, he are dealing with dangerous, sometimes even deadly conditions. fox's mike tobin is in omaha tonight. >> reporter: whiteout conditions in much of the midwest thursday, more than a foot of snow falling in wichita, kansas, where road crews were trying to keep streets clear, officials closing more than 90 miles of interstate and asking people to stay home. >> if you don't have to get out today, please just stay home because it helps us clear the roads off. >> reporter: snow blanketing parts of missouri, the governor declaring a state of emergency, st. louis experiencing a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, officials urging resident to take the day off instead of risking their lives on the road. >> things will be a lot more normal tomorrow during some course of the day, but even if you have to stay home tomorrow, call it a nice four day weekend. >> reporter: freezing rain making driving conditions dangerous in springfield where ice caused this vehicle to flip over on a highway. it's slow going on the interstate for truckers in lincoln, nebraska, where plows trying to clear the road in whiteout conditions, the storm expected to move east. another system may spin off and cause heavy snowfall in new england over the weekend. at least 24 states are expected to be affected before it dissipates. at least two deaths are blamed on the weather system thus far, an 18-year-old and a 19-year- old in nebraska and in oklahoma, both situations where the cars lost control on slick roads. in omaha, mike tobin, fox news. >> that's all over. he was in omaha, talked to friend in st. louis today. >> when it's done it will have affected half the country. >> that's why i don't have friends in st. louis. i don't want to hear it. >> they didn't call and complain. i called to check on them. >> she had to close her daycare you said. >> she said everything was shut down. >> there's an icy part of this, too down to our south. we're watching that storm now. it will affect us but only very slightly. it could be potentially a nonevent here because there's a split, but if there's even smallamount of sleet, sleet can make things dicey. there could be some precipitation around and it could take the form of a little sleet or snow or freezing rain if you live far enough north. we'll start with a look at the big storm everybody is talking about. you know that this moisture here is getting ready to split into two pieces if you were watching at the beginning and this snow portion will weaken. this will transition into a coastal storm that will potentially bring new england more storm. while it's splitting it will come across d.c. that's why we won't get a whole lot out of. this we'll probably get a little rain -- out of this. we'll probably get a little rain on saturday. there's an area of high pressure that will keep this at bay a little bit longer, so most of you will be dry for the morning. you'll have some clouds out there, but i really think any precipitation we get in the morning would be spotty. by the way, we do have some advisories to our west. this is actually for a combination of snow and sleet, but also freezing rain. so late tonight and during the day friday there's a possibility of a small buildup of ice in these purple areas, but nothing has been issued for the d.c. area. at the surface this is what the setup will be tomorrow. there's going to be rain to our south and we'll eventually see this change to rain everywhere else. the pink zone is a small area of a combination of snow and sleet, outside chance for freezing rain, best chances likely in the mountain or perhaps well to the north along the mason-dixon line. that area of low pressure this becomes the coastal storm will head up to new england. it throws some rain showers back at us on saturday, heaviest rain to the east as this thing continues up the coast. it may hit places like boston. they may end up having one of their snowiest februaries in a long time. in terms of any accumulation here, it's only a slight chance. we would say a combination of snow and sleet might produce a light accumulation, but it's only a chance. i think a better chance might be out to our west. we want you to have a heads up because when it comes to sleet, it doesn't take much to create some slippery spots that. would mainly be a concern for the evening commute on friday. let's take this forward in time and it's showing us very little in this area. a lot of times the lightest stuff doesn't really project itself onto the futurecast, but you can see why along interstate 80 one will have to watch for a bit of snow or sleet or freezing rain. at 5:00 there's a little rain to our south, patches of snow to our north. some of you might not see anything, but again sometimes these things can change a little bit and we're awfully close to moisture. by midnight rain and a little patch of snow hanging around to our north and rain saturday. watch for how the snow begins for new england and boston saturday at 11:00. we'll be drying out by then. get ready for a little mix tomorrow and rain on saturday. your fox 5 accuweather seven- day forecast, only about 36 degrees tomorrow and roads are cold, so that's why we think potentially sleet could cause some slick spot here and there. saturday 42, cold showers, sunday 49 degrees, looks like a pretty good day and so does monday. we might have a wintery mix back in the forecast on tuesday at 40' and a couple other days in the -- 48 and a couple other days in the mid-40s. one more day of meteorological winter. . the red carpet is being really connecting with jennifer lawrence's performance and for that reason i think she'll win. >> reporter: following wins at the globals in sag anne hathaway should win for her performance in les
