WTTG Fox 5 News At 6 January 30, 2010

this is fox 5 news at 6:00. fox 5 on snow patrol as yet another winter storm hits hard. >> everyone wants to know when it will it let up. good evening. i'm maureen umeh. >> i'm will thomas. here is the day in a nutshell. snow falling fast and furious. road crews trying to keep up and roads themselves leaving a lot to be desired. >> you can see all the closings and delays we know about scrolling on your screen. we're listing them on myfoxdc.com. fox 5 all over the storm with crews in northern virginia, maryland and d.c., but first let's go to sue palka in the fox 5 weather center with the very latest on the conditions. sue, you've been on this all day long. what is the latest at this point? >> reporter: i think it's going to wind down, between 7:00 and 9:00 i think it will essentially be ending. it is going on out there and it's been so cold in the teens all day that this is a very powdery know which is making it hard for even salt to be effective. on the radar what we're showing you is mostly light snow. i'm going to put this in motion. it's moving away but in the pink bands we're showing which are beginning to shrink up is where we tend to pick up heavier snow. maybe a half inch or so. about a half inch or so per hour. so at least that is winding down. you can see on true view there is a back edge. south and west of interstate 60 in central virginia where they have been clocked hard with this snow, it is winding down. as we go through the night we'll see this getting back to flurries but we still have winter storm warnings for a big chunk of our area. everything in purple. that got expanded late this afternoon to include lowden, montgomery, and southern alabama. to the north and west are winter weather advisories. it's already in the teens. some of us will see single digits tonight. incredibly bitter. we'll see those snowflakes tapering off between 7:00 and 9:00 from west to east. it stays in the teens until about 9:00 but low teens after that. i'll let you know about the rest of this weekend forecast and we'll share amazing snow totals. in general it's about about 4 to 8 inches of snow, heaviest to the south. richmond picked up 10 inches. virginia was hit hard and roz plater is in wood ridge. how are things looking out there? >> reporter: pretty good right now. we have 5 to 6 inches and it's still coming down fast and furious. the role problem is the bitter temperatures. it is very, very, very cold. that is probably going to complicate things a lot. on the drive out here we drove in virtually white-out conditions the major roads like the beltway and 95. you could only move at a snail's pace. with more snow than expected, v d.o.t ramped up its deployment to a level v. that puts 7 hundreds pieces of equipment on northern virginia roads. the crews will be at it around the clock until further notice. they tell me they are doing their part and would drivers to do their part too. >> the trucks are starting to get it down. if we can get the snow to stop we'll be okay. >> and the people to get off the roads? >> that would help. they don't have no respect for the plow trains, when all the dump trucks are running together. when you look at a plow train, cars are weaving in an out of them. if they would let us do our job, we can get the roads open. >> reporter: they asked motorists to stay home if they don't have to come out. it may be a while before they can get to secondary roads. we've probably dodged a bit of a bullet in northern virginia. we heard from virginia state police that between last night and noon they responded to more than 600 accidents, most in the southern part of the state. so still coming down and pretty treacherous out here. >> as you were heading out there, did you see a lot of accidents? >> reporter: we saw a couple cars sliding off the side of the road onto a ditch on some side roads. we had to turn around twice because the traffic was so backed up on several routes. so minor fender benders but it backs traffic up and slows everything down and makes it hard to stop if you're coming into a line of traffic that's already stopped. >> roads real slick. roz plater in woodbridge, virginia. let's look at i-270 near falls road. you can see these folks practically at a standstill in one or two of those lanes over there. we've also heard reports as roz was saying of accidents jamming up highways and byways all over the area. you're recommended to stay off the roads if you can. the ground is simply too cold for the salt to work well. the driver of the dump truck had a run-in with a median today. his is i-270 south near 370. fox 5's karen gray houston connues our team coverage from maryland. >> reporter: there were reports of cars spinning out of control all over maryland today, especially on the in and outs. county and state crews have been busy sanding and salting all day long. streets like river road are finally starting to get plowed. this is the view at midday along the outer loop of the beltway along connecticut avenue. m d.o.t. trucks spreading sand and salt. drivers got stuck. this big rig was trying to delivery luxury cars to a dealership. >> took me a long time to get here and now i'm stuck. they want their cars. >> reporter: this gas station owner was frustrated because he hadn't seen a snow truck in hours. >> one came around like 8:00, and another came around like between 10:30, like that and he was just taking the load of the salt but he is not throwing anything on the road. >> reporter: transportation experts at the county storm operations center in gaithersburg say bear with them. >> it's very cold out today. the ambient temperature just above 20. the pavement temperatures at about 20. so the use of deicing agents is not as effective as one would like it at those lower temperatures. >> i live in the district and the connecticut avenue has been plowed. and rockville pike has not been. >> reporter: but did you know they don't plow until there are three inches of snow on the ground? >> plowing is not effective below 3 inches. it does nothing more than damage the plows. >> reporter: some motorists slipping and sliding wised up and ditched the cars. >> really slippery. i decided to walk this time. i don't feel comfortable driving in this weather. >> reporter: transportation officials are in agreement on one piece of advice. they say if you don't have to go out on the roads it will make their jobs easier if you stay inside. on river road in montgomery county, karen gray houston, fox 5 news. >> you can barely see karen. metro access is not running. buses are running on emergency snow routes only. metro rail is reporting no problems from the snow but they do have deicer trains on stand by just in case. the weather always unpredictable especially in the winter. even when we're not on, head over to myfoxdc.com for updated conditions, forecasts, photos, closings, and delays. he is one of the most beloved animals really in the rice tri of the national zoo. >> -- history of the national zoo. >> tyshon is preparing to move to china. we'll show you the snowy party that happened today we'll show you what left this car and a police car engulfed in flames. we'll be right back in 20 seconds. take a look at this shot uploaded to myfoxdc.com by kr this afternoon from clarksburg, maryland. it's about halfway between frederick and rockville along 270. up you can upload your photos and we'll put them on the on air. go to myfoxdc.com and click on upload your weather photo. sue palka is coming back with another check of the storm in a few minutes. a routine car crash in prince georges county turned into anything but for police. the bizarre incident ended with a maryland man dying after police say he stole a squad car and crashed it. that doesn't appear to be the first accident that the man was involved in today. fox 5's jennifer davis has more. >> reporter: it looks peaceful as the snow falls on this country road in upper marlboro but police say it was an entirely different story here last night. it all started about 2:30 in the morning. officers happened upon a single car crash and found an injured 28-year-old kenneth ray taylor outside his damaged vehicle. >> he had visible injuries and the officers established contact with him and set him aside and went to the vehicle to see if there were any other injured occupants. >> reporter: in a matter of seconds, their crewser became a get away car. >> the male jumped into one of the police cruisers and took off. >> reporter: he made it abut a mile down the road before hitting a utility poland totalling the cruiser. >> the car burst into flames. the officers care fire extinguishers in the car but the fire extinguisher could not put out the amount of flames. >> reporter: firefighters arrived but taylor died a short time later. >> we've had cruisers taken in the past but probably not to the point of crashing and killing yourself. >> reporter: they said it makes sense that the officers left their cars running. >> being that close to the accident scene in general your first instinct is to jump out and render assistance. >> reporter: investigators are left with a lot of questions. they hope to get some answers eventually from the merhige. in upper marlboro, jennifer davis, fox 5 news. the weather making it difficult for fire crews to get to a house fire that left one person dead this afternoon. that fire broke out around 1:30. it took ten minutes for firefighters to get there but it was too late for the victim inside. no one else was hurt and it is not yet known what caused that fire. now to the recovery in haiti where the u.s. military stopped airlifting any more victims to the u.s. it's awful because of a sufficient over medical costs. the pentagon halted evacuations wednesday afr the governor of florida told the federal government his state can't afford to pay hospital costs. in haiti, doctors say 100 victims will die in the next day or two without the u.s. air lifts. certainly not a disaster here at home but the weather is definitely presenting big challenges. especially if you're out on the road driving. >> sue will be coming back with an update on conditions and the rest of the forecast. we'll show you how the district and country threw a going away part for tai shan. it's all on the other side of the break. there was a good-bye party for tai shan at the national zoo. they ended the celebration a little early because of all the snow but not before our local celebrity got a special frozen cake. more than 150 people showed up in freezing cold temperatures to say good-bye to tai shan. >> we've been here since about 10:00 and we've been out here very long time. it's very cold. my toes are frozen. we got to see the pandas. earlier we were over there and he was laying on his back eating bamboo. >> i'm sorry they're going back. the zoo is never open on a snow day so this is a very special day for us in the neighborhood. >> reporter: tai shan got a three layered frozen cake made of apples, ca, beets and bamboo. they're flying him to china on the panda express. >> they could call it the butter stick express. >> we're going to miss that little guy. >> maybe he could come back and visit. >> maybe there is a webcam where we can see him in china. >> one of the pandas may be pregnant so we could have another cub. >> tai shan may be saying it's too cold. >> i think he's used to the snow. >> we're not. >> what is up with this? this is an unusual snow for d.c. it's so cold. usually when it snows, it's sloppy and wet. it's hard to make snowballs and it's hard to drive on. it was a white knuckle drive into d.c. one of our employees just got here from annapolis. four and a half hours. >> oh, my gosh. >> i can believe it. >> dave made it but it was a rough ride and mostly because of a huge number of accidents, not so much that the roads are that tough but a lot of people were skidding out. when i was coming down 270 i saw a guy taking pictures of his vehicle going south when i was going north and he was standing on 270. i hope he's okay. maxhd satellite and radar showing this beginning to wind down. lots of dry slotting going on to the south and west. to answer your question, when is in snow out of here, in the next couple hours it's going to wind down. east of 95, there are one or two spots where you may pick up another half inch. most of us won't get a whole lot more accumulation out of this. we've had a lot, especially down to the south. jackpot totals in and around the richmond area of 10 to 12 inches as forecast. we were upping our totals to 3 to 6 inches last night. it was even bigger than that. southern maryland, 6 to 10 inches south of d.c. including d.c. proper, which has been 4 to 6 inches. to the north, 2 to 4 and beyond that it was 1 to 3 inches. here are specifics. 4 inches officially in d.c. but hollywood, maryland, 10 and a half north. but the big deal is not going to be snow. it's really winding down. we'll just have some light snow to flurries ending around 9:00 east of town. it's now the cold we'v to focus on. 16 in baltimore. 18 n frederick. 19 in hagerstown. there is a little bit of a wind so windchills are in the single digits. it feels like 3 degrees out there in washington, 4 in baltimore, 4 at dulles and 2
