and, you know, ham hampered. >> we could do this again and again. >> there's no question about it. i don't know that we are still in it. >> here's a footnote. now thanks to the congress, the d.c. government was able to meet payroll yesterday. and they now they have 30 million left in that fund that we have been talking about since the shutdown began. here's some more good news. the city has yet another $100 million in emergency funds that the mayor may be able to tap into to keep the d.c. government workers on the job. then again, he may not have to if all of this ends soon. this is killed five people before he was taken down by police. in the wake of the shootings, it was revealed the 34-year-old gunman had mental health issues and controlled by low frequency waves. the fate of navy yard building 197 is up in the air. we have an update on that biker road rage case in new york city. a second undercover cop has come forward saying he was part of that ride. you might remember it ended with the driver of an suv being attacked. john miller spoke to the officer and his attorney. >> you tell us what happened today. >> undercover police officer, matt rodriguez, and his lawyer emerged after more than an hour of discussions over the case of the motorcycle assault and suv driver in front of his wife and child. rodriguez said, he had nothing to do with the assault. >> how hard has this been going through this? especially with all the attention? >> it's been difficult, but i can only take it one day at a time. >> rodriguez is the second new york city undercover police officer to come forward to say he was riding with the group that was involved in the assault. just last week, the first undercover new york city detective who came forward was charged with assault, riot, and criminal mischief after investigators said he lied about his role in the attack on the suv. the lawyer for officer rodriguez said his client's story checks out. >> what you told him was, you weren't there for any assault, you weren't part of any assault, you didn't witness any assault. >> john, with all due respect, i'm going to stop you right there. >> rodriguez's attorney said his client had fallen to the rear of the pack of motorcycles. that he didn't see the confrontation where the suv was surrounded by motorcycles and drove over two of them to escape. rodriguez reportedly told investigators he took a different exit off the highway to visit his grandfather in a nursing home, so he was never on the street where the final assault took place. police officer matthew rodriguez voluntarily presented himself to the manhattan district attorney's office to answer any and all questions and concerns they had regarding his alleged involvement of the incident of september 29. it appears that the district attorney's office will discover as we have known from day one, that there are no acts of criminallalty on behalf of matthew rodriguez. >> how did you feel to sit down to talk with the investigators and get your story out? >> i was glad to be given the opportunity. >> is it appropriate for police officers to be a motorcycle gang? >> this is not a motorcycle gang. front line soldier was a small group of law enforcement individuals and former veterans. nypd himself has a motorcycle club. he was a group that he thought was involved in charitable organizations and charitable things. >> that was john miller reporting. rodriguez has not been suspended. prosecutors have more questions for him. >> leaders of prince georges county gathered to call greater call to domestic violence. they unveiled a new initiative about the courthouse. prince georges county increase the resources to combat domestic violence, and now they have a team of 15 detectives specifically the coming weeks. police have now linked a baggage handler to those dry ice bomb explosions at lax international airport. tonight, that suspect is in custody. carlo bennett reportedly works for an airport contractor. two of the dry ice bombs did blow up, nobody was hurt. but airport operations did have to be suspended and there was a flight delay. the six flags over texas amusement park is blaming independent contractor for a roller coaster accident. a woman was ejected back in july. her family is suing six flags for negligence. the company says it did not build or design the ride. independent contractors are the ones responsible for these passenger restraint systems that failed. moments ago, we learned a nine-year-old boy will be taken away from his parents. a judge ordered he and his family get therapy, his father admitted his son has behavioral issues. he also stole a truck. he has been suspended from school and repeatedly runs away. the dad says he tried to get help, but he always hits roadblocks. some terrifying moments for passengers aboard a spirit airlines flight. a fire broke out in an engine just minutes after the jets took off in dallas. passengers say the flames were so bright, it looked like the inside of the plane was on fire. the aircraft turned around and made an emergency landing. flames started shaking violently and after that, the plane started filling up with smoke. >> shortly after that big explosion, it just poured in. all the vents on the side of the aircraft were just pouring smoke. >> the passengers were put aboard another flight and finally reached their atlanta destination last night. can you even imagine? >> might be enough to not put you on that next flight. >> that would be a better option for some people. >> have you seen the photo of the wounded soldier that has gone viral? >> this is maizing stuff. all right, that's pretty regular. at the time, however, everybody thought he was unconscious, but to their amazement, been dry. exception, some showers were found in the mountains and we'll see more showers tonight in the mountains, maybe a couple creep over tonight late. 70 downtown. upper 60s in bethesda and arlington. 69 in springfield. these temperatures are pretty much average for this time of year. average high is 69. 72 in college park and 69 down in waldorf. so, clouds remain tonight, but milder. almost like a spring. we will be in the 60s downtown. warm tomorrow, especially in the evening and the evening commute will be wet for most. best chance will be 4:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. for showers. and thursday night as a cold front whips on through. midnight or so, walking the dog late. no showers in the immediate metro area. some showers into the mountains. put this back into motion by morning. the computer is over done here with this. some showers are possible in the morning. the best chance will be with the front itself, which comes through in the afternoon and evening. so now by lunchtime, you have showers, culpeper, back into winchester and that rolls through during the evening hours, even a yellow showing up, some heavier activity to north. could see a rumble of thunder. by 11:00, all the showers east of 95 into southern maryland and clear out quickly after that in the wee hours of the morning on friday. for tonight, mostly cloudy, mild. showers possible. better chance in the mountains. low temperatures 54 to 62. that's a pretty mild night for what is now mid october. in the 60s to start downtown. some showers possible by 11:00. better chance for showers at 1:00 early afternoon tomorrow downtown. next three days, we are seasonal on friday. temperature right back to 69. saturday we had clouds yesterday. had to add a shower late in the day, 69. i think we'll get to 76 in before it begins to shower. next seven days, sunday looks great for the game. temperatures in the mid 60s. cooler, and looking at low 60s on monday. mid 60s on tuesday. another cold front out of every 500 of our african american population. >> it causes red blood cells to stick together and block circulation. the result, organ damage, organ dysfunction, and lots of pain and it can go on for days. >> treatments for preventing pain crises have been inadequate. for that reason, looking for new compounds. >> the doctor of bethesda is working with the lexus farm pseudocall on a new clinical trial. it's called cell g1 and might be a huge step forward in managing this disease. >> hoping this will reduce the stickiness of the cells and allow good adequate blood flow through the microcirculation, thereby reducing pain crisis. >> two documented in a year, which is normal. the next time she has one, she'll meet with dr. boshay to begin the trial. >> what i'm hoping is this will know, months and months of training that would be so disappointing. >> the past 16 days have been nerve racking for the 30,000 runner who's have been training and fund raising for this race wondering if their efforts will go to waste. she plans on running the 10k, which is a companion race to the marathon. she and several members of her parish are raising money for seminary students. regardless of what happens on capitol hill, the parish's mission to help students will go on as planned. >> it would be disheartening if there is not a deal made, because you know, you are still raising the money. i'm sure money will go to where it needs to go. >> sarah decided she wanted to run the marathon about a year ago. after all those training runs, a cancellation would be a big let down. this was supposed to be sarah's first marathon, but she is keeping everything in perspective. >> as frustrated as i am from a running perspective, it doesn't affect my paycheck. i have a lot to be thankful for. >> as lawmakers iron out details, participates and personnel from the marathon wait with baited breath. the staff hasn't made a decision whether the race will go on as planned, but the news coming out of the hill today is encouraging and a final decision will be made within the next day or two. the decision can't come soon enough for the anxious runners. >> just a yes or a no so everybody can go on with contingency plans. the race directors are working as hard as they can to come up with alternatives. >> a shutdown deal isn't done yet. let's keep playing frustration madness. daughters walk down the aisle. the girls were planning to get married at the end of the month, but moved up the wedding when their mom would not make it that long. becky has been battling breast cancer. >> you're losing your mom and best friend. anybody would want their best friend at their wedding, especially their mom. she's both to us and our wedding wouldn't be the same if she wasn't there to experience it with us. >> wow. 12 hours after becky saw her daughters say i do, she passed away. see how brave they really are. >> a video you will not want your college students starring in and into the valley later on the evening and a few could work their way over the mountains late tonight. temperatures, well 68 in arlington. 68 in fairfax. 71 in college park and down to 68 in waldorf. all right. so we're looking at clouds remaining, but still mild tonight. in fact, milder tonight than last night. we're talking low 60s downtown. warm thursday, a few showers. wet commute home. i think that's going to be the best chance for showers and maybe a rumble of thunder, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. drying out quickly. the front will roll through. we'll be left with a fine finish to the week. so, tonight mostly cloudy, mild, showers possible, lows 54 to 62 with light winds. by morning, there will be a few showers around. by and large, the best chance for showers and maybe a storm will be in the afternoon. high temperatures around 75. winds out of the south at 10. so, we'll break it down. we're looking at temperatures 54 to 64 in the morning. that's a mild start. some showers in the afternoon, 72 to 76. more showers, the best chance for showers in the evening, 66 to 72. the next three days, seasonal on friday. clear out very quickly behind the front. highs near 70. saturday, another front approaches. we had clouds yesterday. we did not have any showers, at least i didn't. we got some showers late saturday or saturday night. temperatures near 70. a nice day. 76 cold cup, we'll see you out there on saturday. should not interfere with most of your saturday plans. home game on sunday looks fine. mid 60s. low 60s on monday. another cold front comes in on estimates that 40,000 women will die from breast cancer in 2013. this week, 20 women fighting the disease went to redskins park for a little pick me up. they got that and a little more. >> it's a six letter word and it's scary. >> my mother passed away from breast cancer search years ago. >> cancer. 20 of these women are in the mist of it. they aren't alone. >> first of all, i want to start off by thanking my mother. >> that, of course, is chris cooley, one of the most beloved burgundy and gold players ever. this is the 6th annual all-star survivor's celebration. >> this event started seven years ago in my basement. >> it was then, chris' mom, nancy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. mom told son she needed to shave her head. chris volunteered to do it. what he didn't know, he was about to unleash a title wave of emotions. >> she started crying the second the buzzers touched her hair. >> six surgeries and 28 radiation treatments followed. since then, chris has been a soldier for those going through similar struggles, which is where today comes in. the redskins teamed up to give these women a day of pampering. makeup, wigs, clothes, tonya schneider, wife of owner dan and herself a survivor juggled a variety of feelings. >> give back to 20 all star survivors, i couldn't be more proud. >> and humbled. a sentiment shared by several current redskins players who attended. strong men, supporting women needing all the strength they can find. >> it's nice to have the support from the other gender, especially tough guys. kind of a personal issue for a lot of women. >> a personal issue for cooley as well. >> as i've been hurt or seen people hurt, the best thing for them is to know they can beat it and to feel good about themselves. feel good about kicking cancer. >> by the way, his mom, five years, cancer free. >> good news. >> cancer is a diagnosis that is a struggle to deal with no matter the age of the patient. >> you may think that a hospital full of kids would be depressing place to be, but as rena shows us, in minnesota, it is anything but. ♪ [ music ] >> there is perhaps little in this world sadder than a kid with cancer. but this will make you forget that. >> not sad here. it's fun. we have fun with our kids. we have fun with the patients while they are here. we don't want it to be a sad time in their life. they have enough stuff to worry about. >> the nurses in unit five at university of minnesota and platt's children's hospital heard the song, brave, by sarah and knew it fit. >> we want to give back to our patients. they teach us so much about life. >> on their days off and before their shift, they shot this video. nearly 70 staff members danced their hearts out and cheered on their patients who are not just the inspiration, but the stars. >> sarah is brave and battling cancer for the second time. >> there aren't always bad times. there are -- you need to laugh about it and have fun. >> with no one expected was their fun video to go viral. some 300,000 people have already watched it. >> you know these kids, what they've been through. for other people to see how amazing they are and to be affected in the same way, it means so much to us. we hope it continues to inspire other kids. >> never, ever giving up hope. at last check, that video had more than 338,000 views on youtube. >> that's awesome. >> very inspiring. majority leader, harry reid, and republican mitch mcconnell put together a deal when speaker, john boehner's republicans revolted. >> this legislation ends the standoff. and ground the work of washington to a halt. >> the deal reopens the government and funds it for the next three months at sequester levels. it raises the debt ceiling for nearly four months, and it instructs house and senate negotiators to develop a long- term blueprint for tax and spending over the next decade. >> that means compromise. that means giving and taking. that's what this system needs to be. >> freshman
