Again, somebody detonated some kind of device at this sub shop here in norton. Police are trying to track down a suspect seen running from the scene. It doesnt look like an accident. Karen gray houston live with the update. Thanks. To a news alert in the district. Police arrested one person, believed to be connected to a Jewelry Store robbery yesterday in frederick, maryland. The whole thing caught here on camera. A bystander alerted police about three masked men robbing colonial jewelers. The officer got the license plate number of the get away car. Today an officer in the district spotted that vehicle, pulled it over and saw some of the stolen jewelry inside. Another news alert. This one ends with good news. A missing 6yearold girl has been found. Ariana berts went massing last week. She was found in arkansas with her biological mother who does not have custody. Say goodbye to your saturday mail. The nations postmaster general announced that saturday delivery of letters will end inhs. The Postal Service will continue delivering packages 6 days a week. John is live with all the details. Reporter the number of letters being put in the mail is plumiting and the Postal Service is losing buckets of money. Home delivery of letters saturdays will go away in early august, but saturday post office hours will continue. Packages will continue to come to your home on saturdays. The problem for the pose Postal Service is this, more and more communications are done electronically. We get almost everything, even the evites through the internet. The post office has a loss because of that. The general said that first class mail has declined 20 in just the past 2 years. Congress requires the Postal Service to refund Retirement Benefits for its employees. No other organization has to do it. The general said the company is bleeding. A typical Large Organization would have cash on hand or quick borrowing ability, 2 months worth of cash to cover operating costs. In october the Postal Service had less than 4 days of cash on hand. In 6 months his agency will scale back residential delivery of mail from 6 days a week to 5. Packages, however, will continue to be delivered monday through saturday. The Postal Services package business is growing ironically because of orders placed over the internet. Those post offices open on saturdays will remain open on saturdays. People who rent boxes in post offices will get mail delivered to those boxes on saturdays. When it comes to mail pick up, however, there will be no saturday service. Postal officials claim broad public support for the saturday cut back. I think its perfectly fine. Its most ly trash mail that i have to throw out anyways. At least one customer worried about rural residents. For them mail is almost their whole society to people like that. I think congress is going to have a lot to say. Reporter now, is the past congress has man dated minimal levels of service for the mail, including saturday deliveries specifically. The question is, will congress back off and let managers of the Postal Service do whatever cut backs they think are best. A lot of people talking about this one, thank you. The boy scout s of america is delaying its decision on whether to lift the long standing controversial band on gay scout members. Officials with the boy scouts met today and were supposed to decide whether to lift that ban. The organization delayed that decision. They have decided to take action at a meeting come may. A conservative eagle scout who is gay is urging the boy scouts to change the policy responsibility and lift that ban. He appeared today on fox 5 morning news. Its not a situation where you can sign a piece of paper and have a ceremony. Theres some real practical issues for parents and for young people. Some religious groups are threatening to pull their memberships if they change that policy. A virginia man pled guilty to a terrorism guard for shooting a guard. Floyd corkins admitted his plan was to kill as many members as he could before moving onto other targets. Paul wagner is live with the latest on this one. Paul, good evening. Reporter Floyd Corkins stood in court today in an orange jump suit and listened as the government laid out its evidence against him. It was quite a bit of evidence in this case. It took the prosecutor quite a while to tell the judge exactly what Floyd Corkins did. Basically he said corkins admitted right after the shooting to everything. He said that corkins claimed that he was a political activist and what he was going to do at the Family Research council was a political act. He didnt like their stance on gay marriage and was going to send them a message. Floyd corkins spent days planning the attack against the Family Research council. First conducted surveillance to see if he could get in the building, then buying a semi automatic pistol at a virginia gun store, before buying 15 chickfila sandwiches that he planned to smear in his victims faces. He told the fbi his plan was to kill the guard before going upstairs to kill as many employees as he could. The guard in the lobby, leo johnson was too quick for corkins and wrestled the gun out of his hands after being shot once in the lower arm. Johnson held corkins at gunpoint until police arrived. Corkins said i dont like these people and what they stand for. He admitted in court his plan was to gun down employees at the Family Research council and go to three other groups where he would do the same thing. Prosecutors say corkins could investigators hes wanted to do it for years. Jerry boy kin says leo johnson is now back at work. Leo is here. Hes been back since right after thanksgiving. Hes doing great. Our request to interview johnson were denied. Boy kins said the Family Research council remains committed. Were still here. Not a single one has left. No one has been deterred from coming to work every day. We intend to be here for a long time. Corkins faces up to 70 years in prison when hes sentenced in april. Reporter the government prosecutor also said that Floyd Corkins when he purchased the gun had also signed up to get training. He actually trained on that weapon that he purchased before he actually carried out this shooting. Heres a little twist to the story. The prosecutor also said that when corkins bought this gun at the blue ridge arsenal he was there at the same time as a french correspondent was in there with a film crew who was going a story about how easy it was to purchase gun in the United States. They interviewed corkins about the gun he was about to purchase. Just a very odd twist. Yeah, that is a twist. Where is that video . Have we seen it . Reporter they did not show it in court, will. We dont know if it actually was obtained by the prosecutors. They didnt say they had it, they just said it happened. I imagine theyve seen it. They did not play it in court. Thank you. A jury found a maryland man guilty of Second Degree murder in the death of a North Carolina teenager. Prosecutors say Michael Johnson killed 16yearold Phylicia Barnes back in 2010 while she was visiting her half sister in baltimore. Johnson was dating barnes sister at the time of the murder. We now know the name of the teen who died after being stabbed near the ravens super bowl celebrations yesterday. His name, donte smith, 15 years old. He was one of three teenagers stabbed during the fight around 1 30 in the afternoon, just blocks from the M T Bank Stadium and parade route. Police arent sure whether the teens were actually in the area for the super bowl celebration or if they were just hanging out. They say the suspects and the victims all knew one another. No arrests have been made. Coming up tonight, it is signing day. We will tell you where the top athletes in our area are headed to play college football. Im privileged to welcome in head coach of friendship. Youre coming off a championship year. Compare and contrast what its like to win a championship and then see a day like this. Our Football Program is es static. A lot of division 2 kids that have chosen to take their talents to the next level and get a Free Education may not have done it without the support of the school as well as coaches and staff. Just to get an idea of how difficult this is to accomplish this feet, less than 2 of High School Football players across the country are getting scholarship offers to play division 1 football. You have 8 today. Talk about the hills that these players have to over come to achieve Something Like that. Its adversity as you well know in the dc area. With these young men, the peer pressure they go through, some inequalities they have, dont spend a lot of time on that. We choose to focus on the positives, focus on the future and getting out of certain predicaments. At the end of the day were extremely happy for our kids. Like i said, the main goal is for them to achieve a college education. We have four guys staying here locally, playing for the university of maryland. When you look at them, talk about some of the talent and how neat is it for you to be able to watch them so close to home . Its awesome. We have one kid that already plays at maryland. They kind of were familiar with the campus and the coach did an excellent job recruiting them. Yanic is a tremendous athlete, a real great linebacker who is going to play well. I think hes going to play early. Theres two other linebacker, carter and walker and an offense tackle gray. Theyre going to do big things. Its 20 minutes away. Im able to go over there. If they need a push, i can get in my car and give them a push. And then we should mention that its all about Graduation Rates with this school as well. 91 of your students end up graduating, 100 of those who graduate go to college. Definitely. The staff and administration do an excellent job. The whole school is set up so when you walk in you understand the expectations to obtain a college degree. I really cant take a lot of credit for that. The school itself, the coaches are there. Congratulations on your success on the season as well as today. Thanks. Congratulations. Theres an ongoing battle to keep High School Athletes safe on an off the field. A group is recommending they get better access to doctors, coaches. They want student athletes to be protected while theyre playing. Nearly 8 Million Students play high school sports. They want high schools to require physical exams and testing for concussions before the season begins. His gift was to those who lived in the city he loved and those who with gave him great pleasure. I think its a great story that he lived so quitely and his death is making such a great impact. A big surprise for a dc teacher, honored today for her work in the classroom. Jacquelyn simms teaches 3rd grade at an beards in southeast. She was named the educate to of the year for the district. The family honored him with a 25,000 reward. The goal of the foundation is to attract, retain and motivate outstanding teachers. As the varsity athletes will tell you, you cant spell botch without bcc. That is the sport offered at bcc of there are 11 students on the team. Some have special needs, others are ablebodied students playing a sport for the first time. Its a great opportunity if you havent found your place in high school. Were a very accepting team. Come in here and be successful. Playing a varsity sport is a special thing. You know, my freshman year i tried wrestling or Cross Country but i never was amazing another either one. To play a varsity sport is definitely cool. It was introduced to athletic programs in Montgomery County in 2010. The object is to roll the red or green ball as close to the yellow ball as possible. The closest team can earn points. We try not to hit it because then the other team scores. Bcc competed in divisionals along with five other teams. The state tournament is next week. Kessler has Cerebral Palsy and contained to a wheelchair but now has a sport she can be competitive in. Its probably one of the best experiences. Its an experience that ill carry with me through out my when i graduate from high school. While the final score does matter in the world of sports, it seems everyone is winning, just by being a part of this team. Giving them to chance to put on the bcc letters and represent their school and play another school, they didnt have that opportunity before. Its cool to see them interact with each other and its gotten bigger and bigger. Reporter bcc plays in the winter. Come spring its alleyed soft ball and in the fall hand ball season. Gary track joins us live from la. What happened out there . You know, it was real brief. Chris brown was not happy about it. He did show up to court. Rihanna was by his side. A lot of people upset that she would show up to support him in a case where she was the victim that was beaten badly in it. The judge basically said that chris brown had 48 hours to show up to his probation officer out in los angeles and go over his Community Service. Basically the judge said theyre still reviewing all the documents. Po officer wants to talk to chris and review his Community Service then they will come together and make a decision. He could be in deep trouble if its found out that these Community Service hours were fraudulent. Final few seconds here. Browns lawyer think its ridiculous and wants sanctions against the da. Is the da grand standing here in your opinion or does the da seem to be going too far . No, i dont think so. I think the d a is doing their job in investigating into the Community Service. The driver of the tour bus lost control while driving down a mountain road, yelled to call 911 to the passengers but there was no cell service on the mountain. Reports show the bus had several safety violations before the crash including issues with the brakes. At least one person is dead after a jaw dropping crash in florida. A box truck busted through a guardrail and was left dangling over i95. The trucks driver was rescued but the passenger died in the crash.
