national guard will not be armed but expect to see some of them driving around in those large military vehicles. four years ago, we are told things went smoothly. the national guard was not forced to arrest anyone, brian. >> matt ackland, thank you. the marine band is prepping for monday's inauguration parade. they will be providing the music for the inauguration swearing in ceremony. they will also be in the parade. this is their 54th inauguration. they started at the jefferson inauguration. there will be 59 groups and 54 floats. 200 people and animals will take part. you may be wondering what the weather is going to be like. let's check in with gary mcgrady to see what that weather holds. >> definitely looks like it's going to be cold. that has not changed. the big question mark is will we get a few snow showers coming across. that is yet to be seen. we are . we are definitely keeping that in the forecast. going to be a cold start. we have some sunshine to start as well. temperature right around 30 degrees or so. as we progress through the day, we're going to be building some clouds. while we probably start off mostly sunny, i think we're going to end up mostly cloudy. temperatures will only make it up into the mid-30s or so. by late in the afternoon, we'll have some snow showers north and west and we'll see how many of those snow showers are actually able to hold together and come on across the city. i think we'll see a flake or two. at this point, it does not look like it's going to be real windy or real breezy. so in terms of the wind chill factor, that does not look like it's going to be too bad. temperatures again generally speaking, will be in the mid- 30s pretty much all day, after the early morning hours. we may reach a peak of about 38, 39 degrees for the high temperatures but it's going to be cold. we'll wait and see if some of those snow showers do actually develop across the city. looks like another fairly cold inaugural for us, in ceremony and the parade that follows live. the fox 5 morning team kicks off our coverage bright and early at 4:00 a.m. the big story is the testimony in the trial of john leopold. it started with a member of his staff describe what she thought was illegal activity. we have nor from downtown annapolis. >> reporter: maryland state prosecutors say that john leopold used county police and county employees as his own personal gophers, ordering them to keep a watch for his opponents and some of his signs. today, a member of his own staff took the stand to testify about some of that behavior. >> reporter: emmett abbott said that leopold used and abused his county staff. but defense attorney bruce marcus had a different take, telling judge sweeney four out of the five charges against his client do not violate the law under the state's criminal statutes. marcus told the judge that the charges defy logic because leopold's behavior was the worst kept secret in the world. as testimony got underway, the state's first witness was patricia medlin, leopold's personal scheduler. when receives allowed to answer, she told the court she was afraid to say no to john leopold. she was an at-will employee and knew that saying no would be viewed as disloyal. she erected campaign signs and emptied his catheter bag several times after he had back surgery. she stood one to him at one time saying that using officers to check on his campaign signs was illegal. he had two officers stay with him when he was hospitalized on two different occasions for the sole purpose of keeping his lover from running into his live-in girlfriend. the state then called former chief of police patrick shanahan to the stand who told the court political activity by any member of the executive protection detail is forbidden. two other witnesses, lieutenant catherine goodwin seen here on the left and former anne arundel county executive janet owen, seen on the right, both told the court that any kind of political activity on the executive detail was not allowed with owe wedges adding, she never asked any officer to help her put up campaign signs or help her politically in any way. john leopold is facing five counts from an indictment in this case, four of them are misconduct in office. now, he is also facing a civil suit from several people, several women who claim they were sexually harassed by the county executive. some of those women are sitting through this testimony and monitoring what is being said maryland governor martin o'malley is considering an increase in early voting days. same day registration invites fraud, critics say. of the governor outlined the priority. making $25 million available for school security boosting the number of state police officers, renewing dna sample collection law for people charged with violent crime set to expire at the end of the year. and the priority for governor o'malley is a push in maryland to end gun violence. he is calling for a ban on military style weapons. >> we can't just take the easy road and addressing just guns or school safety or just mental health is going to make the difference that is called for. >> gun safety supporters teamed up to kick off a coalition called marylanders to prevent gun violence. the goals are to ban weapons, limit magazine capacity and require licensing to buy guns. a news alert from the district where a woman was stabbed early this morning in columbia heights. happened just before 3:00 a.m. in front of a gas station on 14th street, northwest. they say someone stabbed the woman several times in the neck but she refused to describe her attacker. the victim is being treated at a hospital. a new report shows that d.c. police failed to investigate several sex assaults. police never filed incident report the from more than 170 attacks. victims are sent for forensic examinations at washington. an incident report is required any time such incident occurs. and police chief kathy lanier says she has doubt about the reporting. the d.c. taxicab commission says that all cabs will accept noncash payments beginning march 30th. cabs who don't take plastic will be upgreated upgraded with the new equipment. and they will do i awith the meter. and fighting the flu, we'll tell you if activity is peaking in the area. and promising news about the fight against cancer. and even though we ended up with the sunshine coming back, weekend a little bit warmer. and i'm letting you know right now, it gets really cold next week. arctic air on the way. forecast, first look at the forecast coming up. stay with us. ith us.  in tonight's health alert, health officials say that minor children or teens died of the flu. that brings the total number of deaths this flu season to 29. 50% of all confirmed cases are in people 65 or over. it as eased in some areas now. >> reporter: although some pharmacies like the safeway in germantown had flu valk even available, not all walk-in patients are always accommodated. >> sad part about it is that cvs and grocery stores don't give it to kids. so that's been our looking around to find out who had it. my wife found this one. >> reporter: tris for swain brought his daughter gabrielle to a clinic appointment in germantown where the five-year- old was not at all convinced this was a good idea. >> good, done. you are a big girl. you are a big girl. [ screaming ] >> even the number begins to decline slightly, health officials say it is still a good idea to get a flu shot. >> you really need the shots because there are individuals in our communities that do have flu and we really want to stop the spread of flu and the more people who get vaccinated, the more we'll be able to stop that spread of flu. >> reporter: the health practitioners had time andvaccine for 200 innoculations. demand was high because of the continuing pre lens of flu. >> i see a number of people at my school who have been sick. so it takes a week. so it's kind of off. >> reporter: some people were vaccinate the here at the clinic because they could not find the flu at the local physician orr pharmacy. >> reporter: have you tried to find the flu at drug tores? >> we did. we went to safeway and could not find any. >> the cvs has had no flu vaccine for a week. according to federal statistics right now, the level of influenza-like illness is pretty high in both virginia and maryland, not quite so high in d.c. but, you know, it's in 48 states, it's pretty bad right now. slightly going down. an independent pharmacy in northwest d.c. is also out of flu vaccine but everything is kind of hit and miss. the cvs drug store in bellevue neighborhood of fairfax county is out of vaccine. so if you are looking for a flu shot, you have to do some telephone research. >> thank you, john henrehan. some good news when it comes to cancer cases here in this country. there has been a big drop but the american cancer society says there is still a way to go. >> reporter: the head of the american cancer society says it is reason to cheer. steady and in some cases, rapid progress in the battle to beat cancer. there is a downward slope for overall cancer death rates. a decline of ruffle 10% per year, 20% since f 1990. the biggest successes are with some of the most common cancers with death rates dropping more than 30% for colorectal cancer, more than 30% in breast cancer and. researchers credit some facts. fewer people are smoking will earlier detection has helped save lives and there has been improvement in treatment for several common cancers. the study reveals several troubling facts. cancer rates among women did not change much and actually rose .6% among children. one in four deaths in the u.s. is cancer related and certain cancers are on the rise, including liver,pancreatic. more than half a million cancer deaths this year so much work left to be done. researchers stress the importance of regular cancer screening saying it's key to catching the disease before it's too late. in new york, rick levinthal, fox news. the sun came out but didn't help the temperatures. it's one of the coldest days so far. >> looking dreary. gary mcgrady with an update on the friday evening weather. >> the high was 38 or 39. i have not seen the official one so far. if you think this is cold, wait until next week. i'm telling you, we're going to be struggling to get to 30 on tuesday, wednesday, probably thursday of next week. so the real arctic air is coming down. i think for the first time really so for this season. we have managed to get through just about all of january with mostly above normal temperatures. i don't think we can make any complaints about that. and, of course, it does look like the last basically part of last week in january, it's going to be unusually cold. maybe some of the coldest air that we have seen in the last couple of years. just so you know, keep that in the back of your mind. weekend is not too bad. going to be warmer this weekend. going to be breezy, though. gusty winds. going to feel colder. let's show you what's happening out there with satellite picture. you don't see this very on this time of the year where you have the brilliantly blue skies all day long. that's pretty much what's happened. usually, we build a cloud or two but not so the case today. look up to the north. all this -- a lot of this is lake effect type snow. a little bit of energy is moving through the atmosphere. all that is going to stay there. actually what you are seeing there is a burst, once that clears, that will allow late weekend, sunday night some of the cold airwaves to come in our direction. there is not just a lot of cloudiness out there that's going to affect us much this weekend. i expect this weekend we're still going to stay mostly sunny both days. temperatures are going to warm up but i just want to prepare you. there is going to be a little breezy both days. even though temperatures are going to be up into the 40s, maybe close to 50 for some of you for tomorrow, still going to feel chilly out there. 37 now in town. 36 over for dulles. western neighborhoods are still in the mid-to upper 30s. haggerstown, 32. gaithersburg, 32. baltimore, 33. fredericksburg managed to get over 40. so they are still sitting at 41 degrees now. listen, cold evening. been breezy today. the wind will calm, too. once we start getting into the later evening hours, the wind dies off a little bit. look at the temperatures, 34 at 7:00, 31 at 9:00 and 30 at 11:00. that's in town. wrap-up this evening if you are out and about. weekend looks pretty good but i'm going to be talking about the wind because that makes it feel a little bit more comfortable out there. >> if we didn't have the wind this weekend, it's going to be gorgeous. >> we'll check in with you a little later. >> be back in a while. weather in virginia kept state police busy. they took more than 3000 calls. police responded to 588 crashes. the majority of those crashes were just fender benders. there were 600 disabled cars. and there was a drastic decrease in calls as the snow cleared out. and police are looking for a man who attacked a teen as she walked to the bus stop. and more on the manti te'o case, why it appeared he lie after he found out the truth.  prince george's county police are still searching for a suspect that attack add teen. it happened thursday morning in fort washing tonight. the girl was assaulted while walking to a bus stop neared lourdes drive and hickory drive. this is a brand new sketch of the suspect. the teen says that the man grabbed her and they fell to the ground she was able to get away because she fought the attacker by kicking him. if you are able to recognize this man, give prince george's county a call an update to an attempted abduction that happened in bealton, virginia. police are looking for this man. he tried to lure a 13-year-old girl into his white van. it happened on wednesday as the teen was walking near her bus stop on blake lane and hunt's place. please give police a call. a former virginia parking lot attend ant is accused of stealing $30,000. she was sentenced to a year and eight months in prison. he has to pay back the money stolen while working at the smithsonian national air and space museum annex in northern virginia. the parking lot attendant pocketed the money over a three- year period. coming up, the new look of michele obama. talking about the new book that pays homage to the first lady. the buildup to monday's presidential inauguration is in full swing this friday afternoon, perhaps nowhere more so than here at the d.c. convention center. i'm bob barnard. i'll tell you why when i take you on a behind-of-the-scenes behind-the-scenes tour.  the first inaugural event kick off tomorrow in communities all across the country and on the national mall devoted to national service. more on the last-minute work being done for what's in store. >> reporter: the d.c. convention center is hosting all three inaugural events. beside the swearing in ceremony and the parade, as you might imagine, this place is buzzing right now. there were six inaugural balls. the three this time around or the children's inaugural, saturdays day night in this cavernous hall and then monday night, the inaugural ball and the commander in chief ball in this room, mostly enlisted members and their families. >> it's very important to the first and second families because it is their way of saying how much we appreciate these members of the military who are going overseas and fighting for our country and fighting for us all across the globe. we wanted to make sure just as president bush did in five that we give them their own ball with the commander in chief. for the first time -- >> reporter: for the first time, service members and their same sex partners are involved. >> we have a great team and we have been through this before. we hosted three falling racials in this building alone. and we hosted them all the way back to reagan's second inauguration. that's old hat to us, but nevertheless, we are getting ready. >> reporter: steve kerrigan who led today's tour remind us that saturday is a national day of service across the country. >> this is not about the celebration of a president but about the drive and resill yenlsz of people. we want communities and our friends and neighbors to step up, performing acts of service, commit to each other to help make each other's lives a little bit better through service. and that's what will be a great legacy of thisinaugural. >> reporter: if you don't have tickets, you can still pick up and pick up some inaugural shwag. >> we learned about some of the a list talent coming into town for monday's festivities at the washington convention center. alicia keys, brad paisley, chris cornell, jamie foxx, jennifer hudson and marc anthony. and some of the inauguration ball will include stevie wonder. and university sponsor ball, men's warehouse tuxedo has been working with gw u for the past three inaugurations to help men look their bells for the big celebration. the university has been holding their own ball for the inauguration since 1933. >> we have almost 390 tuxedos. we have students who went into our stores all across the country if they didn't make it in for the fitting here on campus. we have them from all over the united states. >> this year's gw inaugural ball is on monday night at the omni shoreham hotel. >> since president obama took office in 2008, all eyes have been on first lady michele obama. the editor of essence magazine are releasing a book to commemorate michele obama. it member rates her journaley from the south side of chicago all the way to the white house in the book, a salute to michele obama. >> i'm a huge fan, essence subscriber for many, many years. >> wonderful. >> i love this book. it captures mrs. obama in unscripted moments. why is that so important to show. >> very important to our readers, because she is such an icon. she is such an inspiration to all our essence readers, the whole audience. we wanted to make sure that we connected to her in a very personal way. >> what is it about her that you think makes her so -- people feel like they know her. what is it about her that inspired so many people? >> i believe that is captured in the book. >> we divided the book in three sections. spirit, style and substance. >> i love that. >> i think that's why people are so drawn to her because she is this woman of great substance. she has a very warm spirit and, of course, she's incredibly stylish. i think all three together have mater a very compelling character. >> this is a woman who has come into her own more and more from the time she began on the campaign trail. >> she's trans formed a whole culture. >> we have people wearing sleeveless that never would bare sleeveless, including me. >> but you dare to try things differently. you wear things that you would not normally, things that you put together. she's shown people that you can do that, inexpensively, too, a lot of way. >> the first time we saw in the white house someone who seems so comfortable with her body, so comfortable with her personal style. and that has been very inspiring to women. she has mixed high and low. that's something that we can relate to. we love the aspiration of high fashion and, at the same time, we want affordable pieces that we can look great in and it's the reality of our lives. and she really reflects that. >> you wrote the introduction to the book and the tribute from maya angelou and michele obama's mother contributed to the book. what is the significance to that? >> when marion robinson did a piece for us which we ran in the magazine on the eve of the election, the way it was so personal, we asked permission from the white house to include that in the book and it's something that we know that our readers can connect with because that was the first time that we have seen this grandmother in the white house who is an integral part of the family. >> yeah. well, it is a fascinating book. it's beautiful to look at it. hope that everyone gets to look at it. >> it is on the stands now january 8th and that's a wonderful gift to ourselves. that's a record of history and that's a wonderful gift for someone you love. >> thank you for bringing us this book. pleasure to meet you. >> thank you, wonderful to be here. >> we were just talking about this, new look for 2013. did you ever take banned substances to enhance your cycling performance? >> yes. >> reporter: the admissions came after decades of denial. he rebuffed time and time again claims that he took performance- enhancing drugs. he won the tour de france seven times in a row. >> the skeptics, i'm sorry. i'm sorry that you can't dream big. i'm sorry that you can't dream in miracles. >> he now says that that feat would not be possible without plus. >> yes or no. in all seven of your tour de france victories, did you ever take banned sub stands or blood dope? >> yes. >> in your opinion, was it humanly possible to win the tour de france without doping, seven times in a row? >> not in my opinion. >> reporter: armstrong was stripped of all his titles, banned from competing in triathlon and other sanctioned events. and most recently, the international committee stripped armstrong of his 2000 medal and lost nearly all of his en coursements and was forced to cut ties with his charity organization, livestrong. >> i'll spend the rest of my life to earn back trust and apologize to people, for the rest of my life. >> the disgraced cyclist said i never felt he was cheating, only, as he puts it, leveling the playing field. in new york, marian rafferty, fox news. talking about the cold weather. >> not too bad for the weekend. as we get into next week, we get part of canada comes down here. >> whooo. >> and it visits us for a few day. it's going to be the coldest it's been around here. if you look at the numbers that we are talking about, rafaely cold stuff. accu weather forecast coming up. here is like for the evening stun. fair skies, beautiful crystal blue skies today. you don't see that very often this time of the year around here. 34 at 7:00. 31 fair and cold. 20s in the suburbs. the winds will settled down just a little bit but it looks like i'm trying to figure out a way if the weekend is going to be breezy. gusty tomorrow and gusty on monday, too. even though temperatures are going to get up into the mid- to upper 40s, not going to feel that warm out there but we'll have, it looks like, a good amount of sunshine, both saturday and sunday. 30 now for gaithersburg. see how temperatures are already dropping down there. fredericksburg, 38. last time we collected on you in fredericksburg, we were holding at 31 degrees. across the nation right now, you can look down here and i don't see any real, real cold stuff. let me explain here. we do have some mild temperatures coming up, all the way from the midwest. st. louis is 55. little rock, 52. chicago at 42 degrees. they are loving life. buff international falls is 11. fargo is 24. the cold arctic air is sitting right up here, okay? looks like it starts to make its run for us, first wave on sunday and then really it starts coming in late on monday. so here is the weekend pattern. there is a little dip in the jet stream across the great lakes but still not too far to the south so it's holding the bulk of the real cold irup in canada. pretty nice mild temperatures, temperatures coming back up in the west. mountain west, will be nice in the deep south. what happens, as we get into next week, as we start getting into tuesday, wednesday, thursday of next week, the jet stream is going to drop and will allow that cold air to just come screaming down right on in. we have been pushing this back, pushing this back. we have been real lucky, i think, by keeping this real cold stuff to the north. after the last couple of times, we thought it was going to make a run for it, it didn't. looks like this is going to be the real deal. tuesday, wednesday, thursday of next week, real, real cold around here for us. not the case, though, for the weekend. we have clear skies here. snow well up to the north of us. mostly coming across the great lakes there. there is some lake effect, lake enhancement and a little bit of a disturbance causing that. we are sitting here under high pressure and look at how much of the nation. we have all the way out to the rocky mountains. you can find four clouds if you drive from here all the way out there. high pressure is building and taking control at least through the weekend, okay? tonight, clear and cold. down to around 29 or so in town. we'll have lows in the 20s for the suburbs and the wind out of the south at about 10 to 15. if the winds drop off a little bit more than that, some of these temperatures could get a little colder, too. it's going to be a little bit breezy overnight tonight and that's going to keep the numbers up a bit. sunny and cold to start tomorrow morning. sunny at noon. the gusty winds will kick up, 20 to 25 miles per hour at times tomorrow and we are getting up to about 48 degrees for highs tomorrow. again, with the breeze, it feels cooler. check out the next seven days in our accu weather seven-day forecast. 48 tomorrow. 47 sunday. it's still night. by inauguration day, 38. the parade will be 36, 37 degrees, mostly cloudy and there may be a make or two. this is not an accumulating snow. this may be -- we call it wind snow blowing down. very cold on tuesday, 30 for a high. maybe i'm being a little optimistic. 32 on wednesday. that's cold as well. we start a gradual climb back up towards normal in the latter part of next week. >> okay. >> thanks, gary. the talk of the town on tmz, the manti te'o hoax continuing. hard very levin joins us from l.a. a bombshell. turns out he has a real girlfriend as well as a fake girlfriend. what's going on? >> it's really relevant, maureen because there have been rumors that manti, some people think he yateed this hoax with this fictitious woman because he didn't want to date women at the time and people were telling him, why aren't you and he created this hoax. we found out that, about two months after this fictitious woman allegedly died, she died in september -- in november, he met a girl, beautiful girl, went to a nearby college at a boston game and they started dating. they were dating until very recently. we ended up getting pictures of the two of them around christmas time. her name is alexandria dell -- i'm forgetting the last part of the name. but her name is alexandria. she is 21 years old. it was a real relationship. they have broken up, but you know, it just kind of spells a little bit of that rumor. and i've got to tell you, maureen, we don't know where this is leading. but we have a lot of sources on this now. we have a lot of information, some of which we have not put up on the site yet, and my gut on this is that, when it's over -- and i could be wrong here, but my get based on what we know now is that he was duped. avenues an innocent victim. >> he admitted he lied even though he learned about all of this in early december. what do you make of that?
